    Day 26 Shark Bay

    The first thing we did today was walk down to the beach to participate in a dolphin feeding activity. There was four dolphins altogether, two Mummy dolphins and two baby dolphins.
    In the first program we learnt from the Rangers about how the dolphins live and adapt to their surroundings. We also learnt that every single dolphin has a unique dorsal fin. At the end of the program volunteers came down with buckets of fish to feed the dolphins with. They selected only 8 people. Unfortunately none of us were chosen.
    After the first dolphin feeding program we went up to the gift shop to have a look inside, while we were in the gift shop we noticed that they were doing another dolphin feeding program so we went back down to participate again. When it was time to pick the 8 people, Jessica was lucky enough to get chosen and they invited Mum and I to help.
    The dolphin was so cute and amazing up close, her name was Piccolo.
    After feeding the dolphins we packed up and drove 30 minutes down the road to Denham. The first thing we did in Denham was drive down to Shark Bay to go to an aquarium. In the aquarium we learnt about lots of different marine animals including sharks, turtles, sea snakes, lionfish, squids, and stingrays. My favourite was a loggerhead turtle called Donatello.
    When we had finished in the aquarium we drove to the Peron heritage precinct. Inside was an old shearing homestead which featured a natural artesian hot spring which was 40 degrees... very hot!
    Once we had finished at the Peron heritage precinct we drove down to a beach nearby to cool off. Tomorrow we are leaving Denham to explore a place called Shell Beach.    Leggi altro

    Day 27 Carnarvon

    10 maggio 2019, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

    This morning we left Denham to arrive at Carnarvon.
    Along the way we stopped twice. The first stop was at Shell Beach. This beautiful snow-white beach is made up of millions of tiny shells up to 10 metres deep and stretching for over 70 kilometres. There is no sand, only shells! The water was twice as salty as normal seawater. If you swam out you would be more buoyant.
    The second stop was Hamelin Pool where we saw stromatolites. The Hamelin Pool stromatolites are the oldest and largest living fossils on earth. Stromatolites are considered 'living fossils', part of the Earth's evolutionary history.
    Once we arrived in Carnarvon we explored the area and got some supplies.
    Before bed we played a card game called 'Cheat', where I learnt how to cheat.
    Tomorrow we're still in Carnarvon and we will be checking out the Space and Technology Museum.    Leggi altro

    Day 28 Carnarvon

    Today we were in Carnarvon.
    The first thing we did was go down to a local market looking for fly nets because there are so many annoying flies in the area. We sadly didn't find any fly nets!
    The next thing we did was check out the Science and Technology Space Museum. Inside we learnt about the Apollo 11 ,what it's like on the moon, and some plans for a lunar base on the moon in future. There were lots of interactive and informative displays and activities. My favourite was a simulator showing a spaceship lifting off.
    After the Science & Technology Space Museum we returned back to the caravan park to relax for the rest of the afternoon.
    Tomorrow we are planning to arrive in Quobba.    Leggi altro

    Day 29 Quobba

    We left Carnarvon to drive to Quobba.
    The first stop was a place called 'the Blowholes'. The waves were humongous and there was a lot of daring seagulls everywhere.
    When we arrived the first thing we did was visit the Quobba beach where we went snorkelling and swimming with all the fish. Jessica and I also swam out to an island covered with seagulls, (and bird poo!)
    After we finished at the beach we set up at a free camp and tried to avoid the assault of flies.

    Day 30 Coral Bay

    Today we left Quobba to avoid the flies and to reach our destination of Coral Bay.
    Our first and only stop along the way was at a roadhouse where we finally found some fly nets for $7 each. We were so desperate that we had to get them. We would have paid more!
    Once we arrived in Coral Bay we booked into the Peoples Park caravan park which was very expensive but was located right on the beach. We went snorkelling and saw lots of different fish species and stingrays.
    When we got back we had haircuts, then we went out for dinner at the local Fin Cafe.
    Tomorrow we will still be in Coral Bay and I'm planning on doing more snorkelling.    Leggi altro

    Day 31 Coral Bay

    As we were in Coral Bay for the day the first thing we did today was go snorkelling.
    There is not much to do in Coral Bay apart from snorkelling. We saw more coral reef today and saw lots more fish. The biggest fish were hanging around the shore.
    We were snorkelling for most of the day, but when we eventually finished we drove down to another beach to see the beautiful sunset.

    Day 32 Exmouth

    Today we left Coral Bay to arrive in Exmouth, home of the whale sharks.
    The first thing we did in Exmouth was go to the Exmouth Discovery Centre. We learnt about Exmouths' history, whale sharks and the Ningaloo Reef.
    After the Discovery Centre we returned back to the RAC Cape Holiday caravan park where we went to the pool to have a splash and met some local residents who are very shameless and like to come into your caravan. They had two long legs, three toes, were covered in feathers ,don't fly, have big eyes, long necks, and a very cheeky demeanor... emus!
    Tomorrow we're going to check out the Cape Range National Park.    Leggi altro

    Day 33 Ningaloo Coast

    After purchasing some groceries at the beginning of the day we decided to check out the Ningaloo Coast at the Cape Range National Park. It was a 45 minute drive with 3 stops.
    The first stop was the SS Mildura shipwreck. The SS Mildura used to be a cattle ship in 1907. It was carrying 484 bullocks when it was caught in a cyclone and crashed into a reef. The captain had successfully travelled this region 68 times but, because of the crash, he was suspended for three months. The bullocks were left to swim to shore which was a mile away, but most of them drowned. The ship then became a bombing target practice site for the Australian Airforce in 1942.
    The second stop was a lighthouse used in WWII. The last place we stopped at was an information centre which taught us about the area and the animals that reside there.
    Once we arrived at Turquoise Beach we when snorkelling. There was a very strong current pulling out to sea which we had to be careful of. We saw lots of different fish and met some very friendly fish called Black Spotted Darts.
    After finishing at the beach we returned back to the camp to have our showers and play in the pool.
    Tomorrow we are taking a tour out on a boat to swim with the whale sharks. I'm very excited!    Leggi altro

    Day 34 Whale Sharks

    Today we took a tour out to swim with the whale sharks on a catamaran. The company was called Ningaloo Discovery.
    We had to wake up really early to catch the bus waiting for us at the front of the park. We stopped at a few other parks to pick up some other people along the way. We drove for about an hour until we arrived at the Tantabiddi boat ramp. At the boat ramp we waited for our tender to arrive. The tender could only carry about 4 or 5 people at a time. We were on the third ride out to a catamaran called the 'Windcheetah'.
    Once on board they gave us a rundown of the safety instructions and the whale shark regulations. We were only allowed to swim within 3 to 4 metres of them and not get in front of them.
    Our first stop was just a small stop to make sure our gear worked and everyone was a confident swimmer. Then the driver got a call from a spotter plane saying that there was a whale shark nearby. The sight was amazing! It was a huge, beautiful creature. They are the biggest fish in the world. It is so sad that whale sharks are endangered because the Chinese and the Japanese have been cutting off their fins for shark fin soup.
    Fo most of the day we were stopping at whale sharks to swim around them. A few of them dived but there was always another one nearby.
    After we had all finished swimming with the whale sharks we headed back closer to shore. We had one more stop which was just a snorkel over the reef. I saw lots of different types of fish, turtles, stingrays, and starfish. Sadly we didn't spot any dugongs.
    On the way back to the boat ramp the crew threw a boom net over the back of the boat, and we were allowed to go out and jump on the net as the boat was coming into shore. It was very hard to hang on to the rope but it was very fun and enjoyable.
    While we were heading back to our caravan park we were all very tired and exhausted. Tomorrow we will still be in Exmouth but it will be more of a relaxing day.    Leggi altro

    Day 35 Exmouth

    We needed a relaxing day, just to take a break from all the action, but we did do a few little things throughout the day.
    The first thing we did was visit an Op shop. We found some movies, some books and we found a big folder for all of my school work.
    Next we just came back to the park for a swim.
    Afterwards we went shopping looking for some presents for my sister's birthday coming u. While shopping we looked through a fishing shop for some fishing tops but all of the tops were very expensive. Next we drove off to a fishing club where we found some really cool fishing tops for a cheaper price.
    The last thing we did was look for a place to have dinner. The fishing club was a bit expensive and there wasn't a very wide range of meals. The next spot we tried was the yacht club but it was closed. so on our way back to the caravan park we started to look for other restaurants. The first one was more of an American country styled bar, the second one was called Adrift Cafe, we decided to stay and eat at that one. I had nachos.
    Tomorrow we're leaving Exmouth on our way to Port Hedland.    Leggi altro

    Day 36 Tom Price

    Today we left Exmouth and drove up towards Port Hedland. We got about halfway, to a town called Tom Price.
    Along the way we stopped twice. The first stop was just a stop to stretch our legs, have lunch and enjoy an ice-cream. The second stop was at a giant haul truck called Terex. It had been used for mining iron ore.
    Finally we arrived in Tom Price caravan park. As we had arrived at the park late we didn't get to do much.
    Tomorrow is my sister's birthday and we are going to celebrate her 11th birthday by exploring Karijini National Park.    Leggi altro

    Day 37 Tom Price

    20 maggio 2019, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

    Today we explored the area around Tom Price, which includes the mines and Karijini.
    It was my sister's birthday. We woke up early to sing 'Happy Birthday' and give her her presents. We got her a whale shark soft toy, a Rubik's cube, a really fun card game, called 'Super Fight' and some clothes.
    After the presents we fed the friendly park galahs outside. Next we went down to the visitors' information centre where we booked tickets to go on the Rio Tinto mining tour.
    The mining tour was very informative and interesting. We learnt about how iron ore is mined and how everything in the mine works. We even got a souvenir piece of iron ore.
    Next we drove off to the Karijini National Park visitor information centre. Here we learnt about Karijinis' history and Aboriginal history.
    After the information centre we drove off to some waterfalls called the Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool. After hiking around the Fortescue Falls we were all very exhausted.
    Once we arrived back in the park we had Jessica's choice for dinner which was pizza, cake and the movie, 'The Sound of Music'.
    Tomorrow we're leaving Tom Price to explore some more of Karijini National Park.    Leggi altro

    Day 38 Karijini National Park

    My sleep was broken today by the sound of galahs squawking their heads off. In the morning we went outside to feed the galahs like yesterday morning. They were very friendly but noisy galahs. They flew onto our shoulders and arms to eat the seed.
    After feeding the galahs we packed up and took the caravan down a very long, corrugated dirt road to Weano Gorge. Dad was not happy about taking the caravan down such a bumpy road.
    From Weano Gorge we hiked down to Kermit Pool. After the hard hike we drove back to the Karijini visitor centre. We handed in some work sheets that we had completed over the past couple of days. The lady assessed our work and awarded us Karijini National Park Junior Ranger badges. We then reset off on our way towards Port Hedland.
    Along the way we saw lots of iron ore road trains and a two big trucks towing ginormous haul trucks... they took up almost both lanes of the road!
    We stopped and set up at a free camp called Yule River just outside of Port Hedland.
    Tomorrow we're going to go through Port Hedland and start on our way to Broome.    Leggi altro

    Day 39 Port Hedland

    Port Hedland is a large industrial town. It is the second largest town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It features the highest tonnage port in Australia and is one of the world’s largest and busiest working harbours.
    On our way to Port Hedland we saw ginormous trains carrying iron ore from Tom Price. The trains each have up to 270 carts and are almost 3 kilometres long. We also saw giant salt piles.
    In Port Hedland we stopped by the visitor centre. We also had the opportunity to watch a giant ship get pulled out into the ocean by tug boats. Nowhere in the world can you see these ships up so close. There were at least 30 huge ships lined up waiting to get pulled into the harbour.
    After we had finished at Port Hedland we started on our way to Broome. At the end of the day we finally found a nice free camp to stop at called Goldwire.    Leggi altro

    Day 40 Broome

    We woke up all tired and sweaty from yesterday's heatwave of 38 degrees.
    We left the camp on our way to Broome. It was only a 2 hour drive.
    Once we arrived in Broome we booked into a really nice caravan park in Cable Beach. First thing we did was jump in the pool for a splash. It was a really nice pool with a mini waterfall and behind the waterfall with a mini cave.
    After we had finished mucking around in the pool we drove into town to check out the information centre. In the information centre we found some things we might do while we're in Broome including: a Chinatown festival, snubfin dolphin tour and a bird place.
    After we had finished at the visitor centre and the shopping centre we returned back to the camp to hop back in the pool.
    Following the second time in the pool Mum wanted to go for a walk down to the beach to watch the sunset. Tomorrow we're going to have another look around the town.    Leggi altro

    Day 41 Broome

    Today we were just exploring the area of Broome.
    The first thing we did was drive down to the beach looking for some old dinosaur tracks. While we were down at the beach we met a very strange and funny bird, we also searched for crabs and small fish in the rock pools.
    Next we went to Chinatown to explore. I had a haircut and we checked out a few of the shops in the area.
    After we had lunch we returned back to our caravan park to go for a swim.
    In the late afternoon we drove down to the beach to watch the sunset and the camel's walk past. Tomorrow we will be going back into Chinatown for the Chinatown festival.    Leggi altro

    Day 42 Broome

    25 maggio 2019, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

    Today we returned to the centre of Broome to explore some more.
    The first thing we did was drive to a lookout over the beach. Dad also got a free coffee while we were there.
    The next thing we did was return back to where we looked around yesterday, and because there was the Chinatown Discovery Festival on over the weekend there was a lot more things open.
    The festival is a 3 day event that acknowledges Broomes' unique history and cultures, particularly in the pearling industry. There were lots of "Pearlers' Games" to participate in. We tried sand sculpting and we learnt how to harvest a pearl.
    After we finished looking around town we returned back to the caravan park for another swim in the pool.
    At 2:00pm we returned to Chinatown where the festival games had begun. We watched a series of different games, and we all got to control a giant puppet. Jessica and Ryley also participated in a game called Flipper racing. We all expected Jess to win but it turns out that Ryley is a frog, and used his frog flipper powers to win the race.
    The next thing we did was have dinner, we returned back to the restaurant where we ate yesterday because most of the other restaurants were shut because of the festival.
    After dinner we went back to the truck to grab our pillows and snacks, for a movie. We watched Aladdin in an outdoor cinema, but not just any outdoor cinema, it was the oldest operating outdoor cinema in Australia. The movie was great and after it had finished we went shopping for some last minute supplies, then we returned back to our caravan park.
    Tomorrow we will be taking a tour out to the snubfin dolphins.    Leggi altro

    Day 43 Broome

    26 maggio 2019, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

    This morning we had to wake up early for a charity walk along Cable Beach. The Kyle Andrews Foundation annual Cable Beach walk. There were so many people wearing blue t-shirts. It was a 5 km walk to raise money to help support children with serious or life threatening illnesses, "so that they might feel better".
    While Mum and Ryley walked, Jessica, Dad and I drove down to the finish line to meet them. At the end there was lots of different activities including: a sausage sizzle, a reptile zoo, an army reserve recruitment tent, a mini train, and an airport fire truck exhibit.
    Following the swim we had lunch and waited out front of the caravan park for a bus to pick us up for the snubfin dolphin tour. They drove us down to a boat ramp where we waited for the skipper to bring the tender in. Sadly the tender had broken down, so there was no way out to the catamaran. Unfortunately they had to cancel the tour. As there was no tour we just came back to the caravan park for another swim in the pool.
    In the afternoon we drove down to watch the sunset with the camel's walking past again. Once we arrived back in the caravan park we spotted a man playing country music outside of the swimming pool. After the man had finished singing we started hunting for geckos. We ended up finding a tree frog stuck in a drain, we also met some other kids in the park.
    Tomorrow we were planning on leaving for the next stop but because the snubfin dolphin tour was cancelled it was transferred to tomorrow, so we're going to stay another day in Broome.    Leggi altro

    Day 44 Snubfin Dolphins

    The first thing we did this morning was check out a water park/playground next to Broomes' main beach. Ryley was the only one who decided to get wet in the water park because he was the only one willing to sacrifice his shorts. We hadn't brought towels or changes of clothes.
    After Ryley had finished entertaining us we checked out the Pioneer Cemetery. We were going to go down to walk in the water along the beach but we read a sign saying that crocodiles has been sighted in the area, so we decided not to.
    Next we went shopping for some more supplies. After shopping we returned back to the caravan park to go for another swim in the pool and have lunch.
    Following lunch we walked back to the front of the caravan park to wait for the snubfin dolphin tour bus. On the bus the driver was telling us that they hadn't seen any snubfin dolphins for the last few days so we all had low expectations of the tour. The tour was held on a catamaran, a bit smaller than the one we went snorkelling off on the whale shark tour. To get to the catamaran we took the repaired tender. This was not just any sort of tender, it had wheels and could be driven onto land for us to get in.
    While we were out looking for snubfin dolphins we enjoyed some delicious snacks provided. Surprisingly we ended up seeing lots and lots of snubfin dolphins. They was so cute with their melon shaped heads and plasticine looking bodies. After we had finished looking at the snubfin dolphins we went looking for dugongs but sadly didn't find any.
    The tour finished following a magnificent sunset. We returned to the caravan park which was now dark. Tomorrow we will be leaving Broome heading further north. We don't quite know where we are going to arrive next.    Leggi altro

    Day 45 Derby

    28 maggio 2019, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

    This morning we left Broome with the intention of driving to Derby.
    Once we arrived in Derby the first thing we did was check out the Information Centre. From there we hired keys to the local Wharfinger House Museum. Wharfinger is an older word for Harbour master. The museum contained a mixed collection of bits and pieces from around the region. As Derby is the oldest town in the Kimberley it had a lot of history including some old equipment they used to use.
    After we had returned the keys we drove off to the local art gallery. The Norval Art Gallery was full of indigenous inspired art and sculptures. I was even given a free turtle necklace for my art.
    Following the art gallery we checked out the Boab Tree Prison, which was a ginormous hollowed boab tree that people used to lock kidnapped Aboriginal prisoners in when they were transporting them.... a very sad part of history.
    After the Boab Tree Prison we started heading towards Fitzroy Crossing. We ended up stopping at a free camp about halfway between Derby and Fitzroy Crossing called Ellendale station. Tomorrow we are going to have a look around Fitzroy Crossing.    Leggi altro

    Day 46 Driving

    29 maggio 2019, Australia ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

    It was a long driving day today but we did stop in some places to have a look around.
    The first town we stopped in was Fitzroy Crossing where we visited two Aboriginal art galleries. The first one had lots of different dot paintings and animal sketches. The second one didn't have much at all, so while Mum and Dad looked around Jessica, Ryley and I played in the big playground across the road.
    Next we visited the Information Centre where we bought an amazing Aboriginal carved Boab nut.
    We spent our lunchtime stop with a herd of cows at Mary Pool. The next town was Halls Creek. We visited the Information Centre where we investigated what we could do in Kununurra. While in Halls Creek we also went shopping for supplies.
    We ended up in a free camp just out of Halls Creek called Spring Creek. After some exploring we found a dead cow in the dried up riverbed. Tomorrow we are going to explore Kununurra.    Leggi altro

    Day 47 Kununurra

    Today we left the Bungle Bungle free camp for Kununurra.
    Along the way we stopped at a roadhouse where we found a live cane toad disposal. You don't see these in Victoria! Inside we saw a very dead and shrivelled up cane toad.
    Once we arrived in Kununurra we booked in to a caravan park called Kimberleyland Waterfront. After we finished setting up we visited the information centre where we did some research on some local tours we might do over the Bungle Bungles. We discovered that we would need either a 4 wheel drive or a plane to see them.
    Next we stopped by an indigenous art centre where Aboriginals go to do their art. We thought about buying some of the art until we saw the prices. Mum's favourite painting was $8,200. It is still there.
    Next we stopped by an impressive lookout over the town. It was only a short hike.
    Following this we stopped by a place called Zebra Stone who mine and then carve local zebra stone into unique household items. Zebra stones are rare stones found on an island in the middle of lake Argyle.
    Next we returned back to the caravan park and decided on a tour that we would do on Saturday, called the Ord River day tour and Riverside lunch.
    Later we walked down to the lagoon on the edge of the caravan park to see 'Gummy' the local freshwater crocodile and a Jabiru. Tomorrow we will be exploring more of Kununurra and Wyndham.    Leggi altro

    Day 48 Wyndham

    I started off the day a bit sleepy. I didn't get much sleep last night due to the noises from all of the purple swamphens around the park.
    The first thing we did today was stop at The Grotto, which is a giant, steep gorge. I stayed in the car taking a nap while the others went off to explore. They came back shortly because the steps down to the bottom of the gorge were very, very steep and looked too dangerous.
    The next stop was in a town called Wyndham. Wyndham is the most northern town in Western Australia. In Wyndham we visited a fascinating and hands-on museum where we got the chance to hold a year 2000 Sydney Olympic torch and see amazing cow skulls where their horns had actually grown into their eye sockets.
    We then visited the Five River lookout where you can see where five mighty Kimberley rivers meet and flow into the ocean.
    There was also a giant crocodile statue and a small cafe called the Croc Cafe and Bakery where Dad had a crocodile pie. (He didn't really like it very much).
    After Wyndham we returned back to Kununurra to go shopping and have a quick look in another zebra stone store.
    Next we came back to the caravan park to watch the crocodile feeding. We saw' Gummy', the toothless freshwater croc and the Jabiru again. Later we sat by the pool listening to live music.
    Tomorrow we will be taking a tour to Lake Argyle, the largest man-made lake in the southern hemisphere.    Leggi altro

    Day 49 Lake Kununurra

    Today we went on a boat tour of Lake Kununurra up to Lake Argyle.
    In the morning Jess, Dad and Mum drove out to a market where Jess bought a peregrine falcon toy and a cupcake.
    After they returned we walked down to the front of the caravan park to wait for the Triple J tour bus to pick us up. The bus took us out to the local marina where we boarded a boat that took us up Lake Kununurra. In the boat we saw lots of birds and crocodiles... we even saw a rock wallaby.
    We stopped for lunch on the river bank where I may have had slighty too much soft drink. After everyone had finished lunch we returned back to the boat to head out to Lake Argyle.
    Lake Argyle is a huge man-made freshwater dam used for irrigation and hydro electricity. The dam wall is almost 100m high and is made up completely of earth and rocks... a nearby mountain was actually exploded to make up the fill. A sign at the base of the dam wall says "faith in a pile of stones".
    We got off the boat at Lake Argyle and were transferred to a bus which then took us to the Argyle Homestead. The original homestead was built in 1895 at a site that is now in the middle of Lake Argyle. Constructed of handcrafted limestone blocks with crushed termites mounds used as mortar, it was a magnificent building for its time. The homestead was dismantled stone by stone and moved to its current site to be used as a museum dedicated to the pioneering spirit of the Durack Family.
    After we had finished looking around the homestead we all got onto the bus, but it turned out the bus had a flat battery so we had to wait an extra half an hour for the mechanics to arrive to fix the bus.
    With the bus finally fixed we headed back out to our caravan park. Tomorrow we are going to explore more of the area.    Leggi altro

    Day 50 Kununurra

    Today we went exploring around Kununurra.
    The first place we stopped at was the Mirima National Park. The park is known locally as the "mini Bungle Bungles'. As we missed out on seeing the real thing these rock formations were the next best.
    It was a very rocky path with lots of spinifex shrubs. The spinifex shrubs were very sharp and cut/scratched my legs. We were also looking for rock wallabies along the way but sadly didn't spot any.
    After the Mirima National Park we checked out the Ivanhoe Crossing, which is a concrete causeway that was built over the Ord River and remains in flow year round.
    Next was a cafe called 'the Hoochery'. 'The Hoochery' is a locally made rum factory.
    Then we visited a sandalwood factory. Sandalwood is a type of tree that is used for oil, cosmetics, incense, and decorations.
    After the sandalwood shop we went shopping to get Ryley some eye drops because his eyes have been very red for the past day.
    We went back to the park to go swimming and to watch 'Gummy' get fed again with the Jabiru. While we were admiring the Jabiru, Jess started approaching it, it must have felt threatened because it tried to peck Jessica's bum. Jess does not like jabirus anymore.
    Tomorrow we will still be in Kununurra and will be going back to visit Lake Argyle.    Leggi altro
