Day 23: Pilgrim House & Success
14. oktober 2024, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C
10.4k👣 4Z🧡 Exploring SdC
Joe's feeling a bit better but still just needs to rest
E,A, & I went out for a bite - tomato & cheese toast with a cafe con leche
Sorted out more plans for our next bit and also talked about issues heavy deep and real.
Went over to the tourism office to get some ideas of other things to do for tomorrow, and stumbled across a lovely chapel there
The ladies at the tourism office there did not speak much English, so we didn't get an answer to that question
We did get to pick up info on the Camino Inglés and meet two peregrinas who had walked it and loved it
E&A left to pay for the apartment tonight (as we were able to extend our stay for Joe), so I stayed to sketch outside at a café
Alongside me was Arek, a pilgrim who was a retired colonel in the Polish military. Had worked in NATO and traveled to the US, etc. Very engaging fellow and we exchanged contact info.
Just then, the café staff kicked me off the table as it was the lunch hour, so I moved inside to finish up the sketch. When I stepped out of the café, Abby and Eric were just walking towards me!
We went in search of the Museum of Pilgrimage (closed; it was Monday today) and then on to Pilgrim House. Jackpot!!! It was a lovely spot, with couches and guitars, computers and knowledgeable staff, restrooms, washing machines, and a shower ("an albergue without beds," the staff said). And in the back was a lovely garden for reflection.
We asked for help with getting our train tickets to Astorga, having been frozen out several times midway through the process, and FINALLY: success! Not only that, but they printed out paper copies for us.
We stayed to chat with some pilgrims and a staff member for a while and then headed back to the apartment. Joe is even better, still resting, but beginning to eat a bit (Spanish tortilla/omelet).
We wandered back in the direction of the apartment, stopping at different shops. Caught a light dinner of ensalada completa (lettuce, tomatoes, onions, green olives & tuna - yum!) on the way to the Pilgrim Mass at 7:30 at the Cathedral. No line! But full pews - 😯. All in Spanish, of course, but between my classes and a lifetime of Catholic practice, I was able to follow along.
And - wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles - we got to see the great sliver botafumeiro fly!!! MAGNIFICENT!
Went under the altar to see St. James in the crypt and say a quick prayer there. Then met up with A&E in the bookstore to enjoy the plaza at night and head home. Polished off the night with this journaling and some sangriaLes mer

Day 24: Cathedral Tour & New Digs
15. oktober 2024, Spania ⋅ 🌧 17 °C
5.9k👣 7Z🧡 Moving packs to new digs and exploring the Cathedral and the Museum of Pilgrimage
Joe is feeling better! 🎉🎉 And my feet feel better!
We moved backpacks to our new place (a 10 min walk away) first thing. The location is near the Cathedral but off the beaten path - so quiet!! No cars!! Attached to a little cafe where we met an Irish couple and their pup who were driving around the area. Breakfast cafe con leche reminded me of my EC (Earlham College) friends 😊.
The Cathedral tour guide at noon was really good, weaving stories together, so we ended with a comprehensive overview of the history and important components of the Cathedral. It was REALLY interesting.
We indulged in a café stop for cafe con leche and double espresso (for Eric) stop, and I got to sketch the feet memorial. (But where are the blisters?? 🤣)
Afterwards, we got our big meal of the day (how was it already 3??) at a café with outdoor seating near a garden square with red, pink, and white flowers. TONS of school kids in neon t-shirts on tour through the streets.
The Museum of Pilgrimage was, as last time, terrific. Got to do a BUNCH of sketching - of St. James the Pilgrim, the grieving Mother Mary, the backpack that individuals passed along the Frances route during 2020 to keep the spirit of the Camino alive, and some late 20th century pilgrim gear: a leather tricorn with shell and a stitched leather shoulder bag, also with shell (🤣🤣)
In the pourimg rain, we came up to our apartment for today and we're so charmed by the layout: ground floor entry, open staircase to first floor living area with a queen sized daybed (for me) and sofa and round table for gathering, along with a little kitchenette & washer, and then more stairs up to a monk's cell for Joe (that's what you get when you've got COVID) and a darling room with two small windows for A&E. The bathroom includes what looks like some original granite stones in the walls.
For a light supper, we walked maybe 15 meters to a local place called Sobriños del Padre (Nephews of the Priest). The caldo gallego (Galician soup) was so tasty & hot, the octopus was soooo tender, the bread was HUGE, the sangria quite tasty.
Our waiter was amazing. He spoke no English but communicated directly with each of us using Spanish, pantomime, and the translated menu. Eric admired his silver 4-color Bic and showed off his glitzy disco ball sparkly gold one. The waiter offered to trade, but Eric hesitated.🤣🤣
And dessert: well, let's just say I couldn't pull my camera out fast enough to video our waiter pouring whiskey over Abby's ice cream cake. We divided everything in 4s: Abby's cake, Eric's tarta de abuela (chocolate in thin layers) and my tarta de Santiago (almond cake). What a way to finish off our time in Santiago.
When Eric signed for the bill, he.made as.if to make off with the waiter's special pen - which got some bigtime disapproval - a great reaction. 🤣🤣

Up earlier today to catch a cab to the train station to catch the 8:14 to Astorga. We stopped in for some kefir alongside coffee. The train ran as far as Ourense, then we ALL got on busses as far as Monforte, and then ALL boarded the train again.
Waiting for the train in SdC, I saw something I'd never seen before: a young man sprawled out on the platform with his backpack and guitar case, sleeping. 5 min before the train arrived, he came to and shook himself awake. 😯🤣😯🤣
Lovely mountainous and forested area of Spain, a large part alongside a river.
Got to Astorga 5 hrs later, just as the rain was clearing. Checked in to our hotel and went across the plaza for the main meal of the day.
Joe got the combo meal: 2 plates (a BIG mixta ensalada and a big bowl of bacalau (cod) stew), drink & dessert (flan 😋) - all for €16! Then this happened:
Waitress: With your menu, you get wine or water. Which would you like?
Joe: Water.
Waitress: (confused) wha . . . ???
Joe shrugs. She smiles and makes a note on her pad.
We showered and are now in the lavandería, watching the clothes go round and round. Talked with a Brit walking the Camino ("It's not a holiday, is it."). He was pretty beat and having trouble getting the machine to take his coins - to the point where he had to call the posted number and hash out something in Spanglish. Before the manager came, some 4 other people came in with THEIR laundry. We felt really lucky with our timing.
A&E are stopping in at the supermarket; we're watching the ropas. Easy-peasy day (actually, kind of boring without walking 😅).
Tomorrow, we're thinking about checking out the Romana Museum and the Museum of Chocolate (yes!).Les mer

Day 26: Romans, Chocolate & Cathedral
17. oktober 2024, Spania ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

The first day it really felt like fall. Cafe con leche in the plaza (with a waiter who was already DONE with customers)
Museo Romano. Learned about the Roman garrison here, seeing some artifacts such as pottery, glass, tombstones, coins, etc. Later, we saw ruins that had been unearthed - even a mosaic floor! and open to the public to see.
Walked out to the walls of the city, from which we could see the Meseta
Found a pizzeria for lunch - anchovy, tuna, and green olives! With sparkling white wine - yum - and a server (the owner) who was so happy to be doing his work. He tapped the table (twice!) each time he brought something.
Walked down to the Museum of Chocolate, but it hadn't opened for the afternoon yet, so we revisited the train station. A school group of teens (from Germany?) was ahead of us at the museum, so we mostly latched on to their tour which was in English. There used to be 50+ chocolate factories here (now there are 6).
On the way back up the hill to the area our hotel is in, we hammed it up with some wooden cutouts for photos.
Colasa and Perico –the most popular 'maragatos' (the name for the local inhabitants) in Astorga – strike the hours on a large bronze bell of the city hall on our plaza.
When we saw the Gaudi palace and the Cathedral, we knew it was our chance to visit. We'd seen the Gaudi on our last Camino in 2022, so we wanted to see the Cathedral this time. AWEsome!! Originally built in a Romanesque style mid 11th century, and developed in the 14th & 15th centuries on.
We left as the sun was setting and stopped in at a Gadis supermarket. I was so thirsty, we got 3 1.5L bottles juice! Headed up to our rooms and shared our crackers, chips, and juices while debriefing from the day. What a great day!
Tomorrow, we plan to walk some of the Meseta on the Camino.Les mer

Day 27: Walking Out Towards the Meseta

Woke at 8 so as to be ready to breakfast at 9 and then head towards the Meseta. We breakfasted INSIDE at the same place as yesterday and were joking that the waiter seemed much happier when he didn't have to step out from behind the bar. 😜
We remembered we wanted to make our train reservations today, possibly asking our hotel's concierge for help if the train app was too unweildy. But Eric was able to make it all work, so we are good for the 12:52pm train to León tomorrow. 🎉🎉
We finally actually left town around 10:35am. It was intriguing walking the Camino in reverse. We'd see a yellow arrow, turn to where it would make sense to see it from, and look for more clues. Abby had her app up, and that was a great help, too.
We didn't exactly know when we'd turn around and head back to Astorga, and it sure was fun answering people who told us we were heading the wrong way. 🤣 Met lots of interesting people from Vancouver, BC, Vermont, Minnesota, Sweden, S. Korea, etc.
Our turnaround point came up quite naturally. This fellow had started this rest stop (on Google Maps as a "pilgrimage place.") He'd started it (with God's help, he added... and then corrected himself, saying that God started it with his help) about 15 years ago, but that it was run by a bunch of men now. It was a very hippie, very cozy & comfortable place, with chairs and big-wheel tables and rest benches. And he served up coffee, juices, fruit, and all manner of yummiest, all donativo.- Somebody had put in a €50 bill!
Stopped into the same cafe bar we had taken our morning break at for a bathroom break on the way back. Of the 16 customers in there, I was the only woman, and there was only 1 other pilgrim. Everyone else was an old man, playing cards, reading the newspaper, or otherwise chewing the fat. Slice of life on the edge of the Meseta.
I was pretty beat on the way back, but this is the most I have walked in a while. We stopped in at a so-called Irish pub in town for supper. Doubt most Irish pubs would serve Caldo Gallego (Galician stew) or paella marisco, but we ordered both of those to share. Both were DELISH!!
8:30pm now, and both Joe & I are ready to snuzz. 😜 Meeting Ron & Ann tomorrow for breakfast here and then on to León we go!Les mer

Walked to station for train to León. Views of the Meseta. Stork nests on abandoned factory chimneys
Abby being called back by a stranger to get her umbrella 🌂 in the station
Harry-Potter-esque search for our apartment. The alleys of León go every which way!
Early dinner at restaurant outside. Fish & salad
León Cathedral - WOW!
Caught the end of Mass at Cathedral's church
Lit candles for Aunt Virginia, whose memorial was today
Shooed out of Cloisters and Cathedral
Saw a wedding start from the plaza, then they closed the big wooden doors
Wandered around and stumbled across Catholic marching bands processing to honor St. John the Evangelist (Wha.....?!?!?!) Several bands, big booming drums, a "float" with the saint statue on it being lifted by a cast of thousands (Well, maybe dozens). Crowds in the streets.
Stopped in at Día, a supermercado, for drinks and snacks

Decided to walk around the city walls, and stumbled upon the Casona de Puerta Castillo, a museum about the Roman foundations of the city of León
FANTASTIC!
Continued wandering around the walls after the museum closed for siesta and found ourselves in the same plaza where we saw the marching bands
Lunch: pizza with everything, ensalada mixta, and sangria. Creme brulee for dessert
Blocked down big watercolor shapes before lunch, and added colored pencil definition afterwards. Joe was a sport.

Packed up and hung out at a café until our next apartment was ready for us. Encarna welcomed us and gave us a lively intro, using gestures, sound effects, French, English, and Google Translate when all else failed. 🤣
Headed back over to the Roman Museum from yesterday to explore the upper floor and the walls from outside. Left Joe, who was fascinated with the Museum exhibits, and went to explore the walls from the outside. Turned left and started walking counterclockwise when I found a spot to sketch. A few people stopped and chatted, including an older man with his young grandson.
Continued walking counterclockwise, and when the walls seemed to end, I turned in towards the Old Town . . . And where should I find myself but at the Plaza od San Isodoro, where we heard the marching bands two nights ago and where Joe and I ate yesterday. 😊 All roads must lead to San Isodoro.
Kids were playing soccer in the courtyard in front of the church while their parents gathered around chatting. Joe joined me there, and we headed back to our new digs to meet up with Abby & Eric to find some dinner.
We found a wonderful spot with a great waiter who was working his buns off, serving inside as well as outside. We encouraged him to take his time getting stuff for us, and he immediately some deep meditative breaths with his hands held, finger to thumb. 😜
On our way back, we crossed through some streets and a plaza we had seen before. I feel like it won't be long before we have the lay of the land. Still amazed at how everyone turns out for a beer or a glass of wine with family and friends after dark before calling it a day. And it's a MONDAY.
Sad note: We got word that Eli's beloved rescue tortoiseshell cat Udon had passed. This is one time I wish we could be home right now.Les mer

Easy morning getting going
Headed to the Museum of León with Joe
1. Photograph gallery
2. Prehistoric era
3. Roman era
Interesting notes:
One exhibit made the claim that the 300 years of Roman rule set the stage for the Middle Ages by establishing an urban ruling class and an agricultural labor class. I'd never heard that before.
Also, it claimed that the walls were as much to protect the ruling elite, with all the peasant uprisings, as much as they were to defend against invaders
4. Middle Ages
5. Modern times
We THOUGHT it closed at 1pm for the afternoon break and so went outside. When Joe learned that the break wasn't until 2, he went right back in.
I needed outdoor time and Strolled around looking for something to sketch. Settled on a tower of the Gaudí museum nearby.
Lunched with A&E at café: salad & pulled pork quesadilla (!!!).
Visited Danish store Flying Tiger nearby
Joe wanted to resume his visit at the museum at 4, and I wanted to be outside. Walked around until I ran into Abby & Eric, who were heading back to the apartment.
On the way, I found the winning combo of a public bench in the shade with a view of the pedestrian street. Lovely time sketching there.
As the sun was going down, I finally headed back to the apartment. The things I had put out on the line had dried, so I pulled them in.
Joe came back with goodies, so we put together a table of bread, crackers, ham, cheese, olives, etc. and pulled out the sangria.
Eric persevered finding something to watch on TV. Finally settled on "First Dates," a Spanish reality show, which was fun to watch, though we really didn't understand much. Reading the body language was where all the fun was for us.
And now it's bedtime.🌙 Tomorrow is A&E's last full day here, and we meet their friend Cathy, who lives about a half hour outside of León. She volunteers sometimes at an albergue, and I hear has stories to tell.Les mer

Headed out to check out the twice weekly farmers market . . . which is not just farmers, but cheese and sausage makers as well as sellers of scarves, jackets and - yes! - underwear!
Lots of folks pulling the wheeled baskets
Joe loved selecting a bag of different olives from the olive seller 🫒
Dropped off purchases at the apartment and then waited in San Martín plaza for Kathy, Eric's friend from the Bangor Daily News in the '90s-2000s.
Kathy placed the order for raciones at lunch. All very yummy with a couple of bottles of house red.
Walked a bit. Stopped in at the crypt which had stones from the Roman times thermal baths and toilets
Walked down to the San Marcos Parador for coffee and dessert (almond tarte - more yum)
Talked about Kathy's experience living in Oviedo (in Northern Spain) and Seville, and about her experiences as a hospitaleira at various albergues
Walked along the river's multi-level park, and then up towards the Cathedral
Stopped for a glass of Rioja red before Kathy had to dash off for her 10pm bus home
Brought in our chilly, but now dry laundry from the windows

We walked altogether down to the bus station to see Abby & Eric off, stopping first for some coffee. But the place was so slammed, and there were only 2 servers, so we just caught some fresh air at a table. 😜
We got our cafe con leche and croissant at the bus station cafeteria. Gave big hugs goodbye, and when we walked out of the station, we decided to follow the river downstream a bit since there was such a nice walkway next to it. That's when we found the bull ring, now used as an event space.
We got to what we thought would be the end in a bit, so we crossed over and started walking in the opposite direction. We walked all the way to where the Camino yellow arrows pick up, and followed them across this lovely stone pedestrian bridge.
Then Joe got the notion to follow the yellow arrows to the edge of town, so we did just that. Turned back and walked along that side of the river, back to the bus station. Crossed the river again, and turned back, retracing our earlier steps.
By this time, it had passed 3pm, and I felt we had completed our requisite 3-hour walk, so we started looking for a spot for lunch. Found it at the square we'd eaten in last night, but tried a different restaurant. IT WAS FANTASTIC. The house salad was simply dressed with high-quality olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Joe wanted to try the hake "casserole," which also was FAB. With cerveza con limón, it was perfect. But not so perfect that we couldn't order some postre, this time a chocolate "tarta," which turned out to have the texture of a firm flan, a hint of Nutella, and hazelnuts. Wow. Just had to get a cafe con leche to go with it. 😋
Though I was ready for Snuzz-ville, we decided to go see Gaudí's Casa Botines across the plaza. So super fab, I'm giving it its own footprint here.
Made our way home to read and catch up on messages. Listened to the pouring rain, and we're hoping for dry skies when it's our turn in Santiago in a couple of days.Les mer

25. oktober 2024, Spania ⋅ 🌙 10 °C
15k👣 6Z🧡
Our last full day in León, and we had no special plans. But it turned out to be one of the most memorable days.
Joe wanted to explore the underground parking lots (interesting from an engineering perspective), and I wanted to see the Cathedral windows in the sunlight. So we split up for the first part of the day.
At the Cathedral, I encouraged a peregrina to use the QR code to listen to the audio guide, as I had thought it was interesting enough to listen to a second time, even replaying the confusing sections. And: The light was FANTASTIC!!
Interesting how all the windows on the east side used warm colors to show the saints of the church, and on the west side used cool colors to depict the Old Testament prophets who were pointing the way to God.
I really enjoyed this second time through, and even got to spend some time outside in the cloister, where some of the stone statues were from the 1200s.
Once outside, I shivered in the bitter breeze, even though the sun was shining. Joe made his way back to the Old Town, and we swapped stories. We wandered around, trying to stay in the sun and out of the wind and find a place for lunch.
We even went inside for lunch, it was so chilly. When I ordered the tortilla (Spanish omelette), the waiter tried to dissuade me, saying it was for 8-10 people.... and it was 2/3 gone by the time we put the leftovers in our take-home container. 🤣 Never underestimate the power of the Ewing appetite!
We walked along the river in the lovely park that runs the width of the city. We decided to walk the lower level, closest to the water, when we saw some older folks setting up for petanca (bocce ball). We watched for quite a while, as clearly there were rules we didn't understand.
As we started to go, one of the players approached, asking in Spanish where we were from. We chatted a bit. He had walked the Camino Frances 3 times. As we made to move on, he introduced himself as Enrique. Joe surprised me by introducing himself as José. 😊 (It was his mom's nickname for him.🧡)
We walked further along the river, exploring the many pedestrian bridges. I was feeling like turning around, but Joe wanted to explore some more, so we decided that I would start back while he stretched his legs a little further.
The fall leaves, the afternoon light, the footpath, the sunlight glinting off the river through the trees - it was GORGEOUS. Before long, I was back at the petanca game - And they were still playing!
So I found a park bench where I could sketch the players with the old Roman bridge and fall trees in the background. Joe came along too and watched the game, trying to decipher the rules for playing in teams while I finished up. Just then, the players broke and started putting everything away.
I really wanted to show Enrique the sketch. His reaction: ¡Que bonito! (How lovely!) I ended up taking the sketch from the book to give it to him, and we could tell, he was pleased as punch. Later, it was clear he had showed it to his pals, as they were showerimg me with praise. I was able to offer them my trading cards as a remembrance from the day. Enrique chose one of my faves - the UW Quad cherry trees in autumn.
What a great day. We headed home, pulled in the laundry from this morning, and chilled with sangria and digestives (oatmeal- or bran-like crackers).
Tomorrow we pack and catch the 1pm bus to Santiago for our plane the next morning.Les mer

It turns out Madrid is a REALLY LONG airport, and no amount of hurrying could get us to the gate on time.
Fortunately, Iberia took responsibility and put us up in a place swankier than we ever choose for ourselves, called INNSiDE Valdebebas. Close to the airport, it was filled with others like ourselves whose stay, 3 meals, and taxi to the airport were all paid by Iberian.
First: eat lunch in a SAD dining room. The food was good, but it wasn't decorated at all. Imagine your parish hall dinner - that would have been more appealing.
Next: nap.
Finally: take a quick walk around the big block and check out the area. Checked out Burger King, where all the teens were gathered. They serve "expresso" and 3 other kinds of coffee. Picked up a toothbrush at a farmacia. Headed back for a light dinner and headed quickly to bed, as we gave ourselves a 3:45am wake-up alarm for our 7:45 flight.
Sooooo much easier today than yesterday. 2.5 hrs to London, a 4 hr layover, and then a 10 hr direct flight to SeaTown.
Saw a great bumper sticker as we cut through the SeaTac parking lot: Madame President 2024. (Hopeful, but nerve-wracked.) Loved being able to use the light rail and bus to get home. We were greeted by a very happy Phoebe at the house, and both crashed early.Les mer
