  • Frankfurt international airport

    23 agosto 2017, Germania ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

So we left Calgary about 10 minutes late and weren't able to make up the time. Long night in cramped seats but all went well. With only a 90 min. Connection time we knew it would be tight. This airport is huge! The plane had to park on the tarmac and we were bussed to the terminal. Passport control was slow, went through security again and then ran for gate A64. From B terminal to A terminal you go down 5 flights of stairs, cross under runway, then back up. I'm not used to running a marathon at 3am! Got to the gate at 12.25 to be told the flight had left 5 minutes ago!. Must return to the service centre to see what they could do. Now a 4.5 hr wait and will get to Prague at 6pm. Oh well. It's all up hill from here!Leggi altro

  • Prague

    24 agosto 2017, Repubblica Ceca ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Finally arrived in Prague at the Lippert Hotel about 7pm. Cheryl met us with a glass of wine and we caught up on all our travels. It is 7700km from Calgary to Frankfurt, as the plane flies, not sure how far from Frankfurt to Prague - maybe 800km. This morning we all met up for breakfast at the hotel and did a short walk to a nearby mall - very modern, 4 levels with all the local and international shops. At 11 we met our guide for the walking tour. It is 4 hours, with a short break for lunch. Den and Paul have chosen to do all today. The rest of us opted to do the second half tomorrow. Very interesting with all the rich history of this very old city. Saw Old Town, New Town and the Jewish Quarter. We had a nice lunch at a nearby outdoor cafe. Beautiful day, it's a pleasant 27C today, though chilly in the morning at 8am! We will all meet up again later as we have a river boat cruise and dinner planned. More later!Leggi altro

  • Last Day in Prague

    25 agosto 2017, Repubblica Ceca ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Paul, Den and I went for a walk this morning to Wincleslas Sq. Not far, but kind of came home the wrong way so it ended up being a 2.5 hr. walk. Some beautiful views along the river (Vltava River). This afternoon we took a cab up the hill to Prague Castle. What a beautiful, huge place! St. Vitas cathedral originally started in about 900AD with many many renovations. Stunning. Also St. Georges Basicila and the 'summer' palace of the King (Charles I think). Called Rosenberg Castle. Didn't have time to see it all, but what we saw was fascinating. We walked down the hill, having dinner along the way, then crossed the Charles Bridge. This is a pedestrian bridge with millions of people and many vendors. It was a lot of walking today! Paul 'lost ' Cheryl and Agnes near the bridge but all have found their way back to the Lippert Hotel.

Prague is a beautiful, walkable city. The people are pleasant and the prices fair. Would be nice to return, and glad we made the trip. We are packing our bags tonight as we have a car picking all 8 of us up at 9am for a 6 hr. drive to Budapest, Hungary. We 8 are: us, Paul and Cheryl, friends of Paul and Cheryl - Margaret and Greg Hurley and 2 dear women Agnes and Phyllis. All getting along well together and travelling smoothly. Tomorrow we meet up with Lee and Joyce in Budapest.

  • Budapest and Viking Jarl

    28 agosto 2017, Slovacchia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We were above the Jarl by 1pm and enjoyed a great lunch on the terrace. It was very hot! And then we did a short walking tour of downtown Budapest. The ship is parked by the Elizabeth Bridge on the Pest side of the river. There was a large triathalon in Budapest this morning and many of the road were closed so we could not get from our hotel on the Budapest side, over to the ship on the Pest side, until the race was over about noon. We had our own 'welcome aboard party in our room and then dinner at 7pm. I had triple battered chicken with maple syrup sauce! We set sail during dinner and by 9m it was dark and we were sailing through Budapest. Beautiful with all the lights on! A few drops of rain - not much. We were in bed early as it is an early morning Monday. The bus/walking tour of Budapest leaves at 8am. Our guide Anika is lovely and very knowledgable. We did the Pest side first, The 'Champs Eleyse' of Budapest, up to Heros Square and the Baths, back across the Chain Bridge to the Budapest side. There is the Furnicular up the hill to the Castle district. No castles there, but we got out to see St. Mathias Church, which was just refurbished 2 years ago. Gorgeous! We then took the bus north to ??? Where we met up with our bus - just in time for lunch! And Den and I had had cappucino and pastries at the stop. Lunch of fresh spaghetti bolognese and of course wine, and crime caramel.
We are now cruising north on the Danube. It is 24 hrs to Vienna so we will be there in the morning. Some music and talks this afternoon. And time to relax. Den is doing circuits on the deck as I type this.

  • Tuesday in Vienna

    29 agosto 2017, Austria ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We travelled all night and pulled into our slip in Vienna at 9am. Off for a 3 hr bus and walking tour. We saw the Hapsburg Palace, St. Stephens church. Walked along the pedestrian mall. Many expensive shops! Back to the boat for lunch and a nap for me. Denis, Paul and Lee stayed in town and toured. Waiting for them to get back for dinner. Some ancient Roman walls there too!Leggi altro

  • Wednesday. Krems and cruising Wachau va

    30 agosto 2017, Austria ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

We did a 3hr tour this morning of the Gottweib Abbey, near Krems. It is a Benedictine Abbey first constructed in about 1100 in wood. This burned down and the current structures are from 1700s. There are 42 monks who serve the local area. They produce several good wines which we tasted. All good! And apricot liquors and scnapps which we also got to try. We were back for lunch and now a cruise through the Wachau Valley for 3 hrs. Complete with wine and waltzes! Apple strudel later. The most scenic part of the Romantic Danube cruise.Leggi altro

  • Thursday is Passau

    31 agosto 2017, Austria ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We arrived in Passau as we were eating breakfast (which are great!) and at 10 left for a short walking tour through town. Only about 50,000. Very quaint and a Bavarian feel. We ended at
St Stephens church . The most baroque roccoco church yet. With the latest pipe organ in the world. Almost 18000 pipes! We were entertained with a half hour organ concert. Quite a show!
We shopped a bit then back to the boat for a great lunch. The boys rented bikes and are biking around town in the heat and we are here until 9pm . Then off to Regensburg. Wonderful trip so far. Everything is great😊.
Remind me to tell you the story of the monks fasting for lent'

  • Friday is Regensburg

    1 settembre 2017, Germania ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

So we had to overnight in Passau last night as the water level is low. But it has rained overnight and all day today. And pretty cool too! About 11c. Anika the guide took us to for walking tour of the old town. Very beautiful Bavarian city of 150000. We had lunch of beer, roast pork, boiled potatoes and veggies. Then Apple strudel of course! We now have an hour and a half bus ride back to the ship which hopefully has been able to make it's way some of the way towards Regensburg. Not sure how tomorrow will pan out as we are supposed to spend our day in Nuremburg.
Tonight's dinner will be German. Bratwurst, sauerkraut and probably strudel!

  • Saturday is Nuremburg!

    2 settembre 2017, Germania ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Last full day of our Viking cruise. As we were unable to cruise to Nuremburg due to low water levels, we pulled into Regensburg at 8am. Still cool and threatening rain, we were on the bus by 9:30. The ship stayed in Regensburg. Paul, Cheryl, Lee, Den and i went to Nuremburg. On arrival we walked to a restaurant to eat yet again! Sausage, we have eaten so much!
The afternoon was a bus tour around the city and up to the castle. Back into old town for an hour of shopping. We are now on our way back to the ship in Regensburg for dinner. Then pack and off 2 bed. Our bus leaves the ship at 7am to come back again to Nuremburg to catch a 10am train to Munich!
The church we visited today is St Lawrence or st Lorez. And this is home to the Nuremburg trials.
Happy anniversary Christina and Mike ❤😚🎂

  • Sunday Kings Hotel First Class

    3 settembre 2017, Germania ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Arrived in Munich about noon by train. Busy morning as we up by 5. Had breakfast and said goodbye to friends on the ship - Mike and Gale from California. And Roger and Jahz our waiters. 1.5 hr bus to Nuremburg to catch a 10am train to Munich. Confused at the station but finally found our way on board for the one hour trip. A quick check in and we were off to find lunch. Found a great Italian place (tired of German food! ) and had wonderful pizza at L'osscaro. The boys took off on a walk about town. The rain was on and off and still cool. Margaret and I did the hop on off bus for a couple hours. Everything is closed Sunday in Munich. Another beautiful city. Home of the 1987 Olympics and the BMW museum.
I think tonight will be dinner and a possibly a steam before bed. Our train to Venice leaves at 11:30 tomorrow so not much time to see Munich 😔

  • Hotel ca'Lucrezia, Venice

    4 settembre 2017, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We had a 6hr train ride to Venice. What a beautiful way travel through the alps! Quite similar Rockies however we don't have the quaint villages or fields of vineyards in Alberta. We arrived in time for a late dinner and we chose to do this along the Grand Canal. Pizza for me and spaghetti for Den. The hotel is very close to the train station so we walked there. Our room was on the 3rd floor which is actually the 4th. It was quite a chore to haul all our luggage up the steep narrow stairway! We had skylight looking out on rooftops. Also a chore to bring everything down again the next morning.
We are already halfway through our vacation. Time goes so quickly.

  • A day in Venice!

    5 settembre 2017, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After a quick breakfast we walked to hotel palazzo abadessa with the help of two fellows to cart the luggage! With Paul and Cheryl we took the vaparetto to the other side of the island and dipped our toes in the ocean. Back to st. Mark's square and saw the bridge of sighs. A beautiful evening walking the streets, lanes and bridges and also an e evening vaparetto ride to see the lights. A beautiful city. We won't get to see it all so will have to return some time!Leggi altro

  • Wednesday Palazzo Abadessa

    7 settembre 2017, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Our hotel provided a free water taxi to Murano and tour of a glass factory. Such gorgeous works of art! From Murano we took the vaparetto to Burano for lunch. This island is known for the lace. A long vaparetto ride back to the mainland to sip prosecco in the garden. Have been blessed with gorgeous weather. Paul, denis, Phyllis, Agnes and I went to a concert. Vivaldi music including Pachabel. Wonderful! And a pleasant stroll back even though we got lost (a bit).Leggi altro

  • Boarding the ship

    8 settembre 2017, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We did a little last minute shopping in venice. Will definitely need to return as there were so many things we didn't see or do. We had booked a water taxi to take all ten of us, plus luggage, to the port at 11. Expensive but the best way to do it wiall the cobblestones and bridges.
The embarkation was smooth as it is an older and smaller ship. Lunch then safety drill at 4pm. Sail away at 5pm. The weather thankfully held while we left port but a light rain started. During dinner there was a great deal of thunder and lightning and I think it may have rained most of the night. The after dinner show was Paul and John, a small Beatles act and they were quite good. After that was off 2 bed for me as I feel a cold coming on. Den looked for the sauna but it was closed by then.

  • Sunday in Dubrovnik

    10 settembre 2017, Croazia ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

We woke to a beautiful Sunday morning. And sunshine too! Den and I have taken the bus back to the Old Town. He has gone to the 10am mass at St. Blaise Cathedral. The mass is in Croatian but I think he should be able to follow along! We were going to walk the walls after but I see it is 150 kunas per person which I believe is $30 cdn. A bit steep I think to walk their walls but I hear the views of the Adriatic are fantastic.Leggi altro
