    Semi 1 Live Final

    Nik - After a sit down, bottle of water and two Nurofen (we're so old) we headed back to the Eurovillage.

    Tonight we explored the Ukraine area and tried some Ukrainian food. I had borscht and a creamy and savoury dish made from corn with mushrooms on top.

    Also shared a very yummy pizza.

    North Wales Day Trip (Part 1)

    Nik - A day trip to Wales today.

    Llandudno - ( Sounds a bit like 'clan-did-know' but the 'cl' is a sound made in the back of the throat.)

    We only had half an hour here at the pier. It was beautiful, but cold. The breeze coming off the bay. Brrrrrr. Very pretty little place. Loved the line of old houses along the road and the stark beauty of the cliffs.

    Conway - We had two hours here. We walked a small section of the walls built by King Edward the 1st between 1283 and 1286, and had a great view of the castle too. It was built as a part of a series of castles that King Edward designed to protect his power.

    They like thier dogs here. Puppy's everywhere.

    Snowdonia National Park - OMG beautiful! Also so very very cold. Stark beauty. We only had 30 minutes here. Would have loved to have more time here though.    Read more

    I had heard about this aqueduct where canal boats sail across over the deep valley and River Dee below! So glad I got to walk it in the beautiful Welsh spring sunshine 😀😀😀😀😀

    North Wales Day Trip ( Part 2)

    Nik - Betws - Y - Coed - A cute little idyllic Welsh Town. Like a fairy tail village. I had a sticky beak in the little local craft store then Suzie and I had a stroll through the pretty little town.

    On our tour bus was a family. Mum, Dad and two children. While we were in this town I noticed the little boy who was maybe 6 or 7 running through the park and singing 'Cha Cha Cha', the song from Finland, and my favourite song this year too. I stuck up a conversation with the Mum. They were from Israel and this was their 12th time attending Eurovision. Wow! Lucky them!

    Pontcysyllte Aqueduct - Our last stop for today. We had the chance to walk across the Aqueduct. Lovely 360° views. Even saw a canal boat cross as we were walking. The aqueduct is seen as a Site of Outstanding Universal Value.    Read more

    A Day in North Wales

    Suzie - Ahh Wales!! So good to see you again 😀😀😀 We booked a tour with BusyBus Tours to travel to this amazing country and it was fantastic!!

    We started off in the beautiful seaside village of Llandudno where we walked along the pier. It was the first time I had ever seen a pier with rides, shops and entertainment in real life!

    We then travelled to gorgeous Conwy, home of Conwy Castle built by Edward I to bolster his stronghold position in North Wales. We also had lunch at Fisherman's and I had my first fish and chips since I have been in the UK! It was delicious!! Conwy is surrounded by walls, making it a walled town, built again by Edward to keep the Welsh out and the invading English in. They were a bit hard to walk owing to their state and size. And it was very windy!

    We then travelled to the beautiful Snowdonia National Park which was absolutely stunning. Everywhere, mountains, beautiful waterfalls, nature and sheep!

    We then drove into the village of Betws-y-Coed which roughly translates to Chapel in the Forest where I had a delicious ice cream - Biscoffi in a waffle cone 😀 British people love Biscoffi and so do we!! I had wanted to visit this village ever since Michael Portillo visited during his 'Great British Railway Journeys' show which served as my inspiration for my last UK journey.

    From Betws-y-Coed, we travelled to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which had canal boats sailing across it into the village of Llangollen. We walked across the aqueduct and were rewarded with 360° views around the Trevor Basin.

    Eurovision Second Semi Final

    Suzie - Today we set off a little earlier to get to the M&S Arena in Liverpool for the second semi final so we could get on the barrier (front row on the floor) as my ankles/knees and Nik's back can't take 4-5 hours without sitting down and success!! It was a lot better than Tuesday when we didn't get to the barrier in time 😀😀

    It was a fantastic show with performances from Poland, Iceland, Cyprus, Australia, Austria, Armenia, Slovenia, Belgium, Georgia, Greece, Denmark, Romania, Lithuania, San Marino, Estonia and Albania with Australia qualifying along with Albania, Armenia, Poland, Austria, Slovenia, Cyprus, Belgium, Lithuania and Estonia. Woooooo!!! Saturday's show is going to be absolutely fabulous!!!!

    We had intended to drop some jackets and warmer clothes off in a bag at a luggage storage facility, go to the Arena, go back to the luggage storage facility, put warmer clothes on and hit Eurovillage to watch semi final 2 there, however the weather had other plans and it bucketed down so Nik and I decided to go back to Chester, grabbed some drinks and snacks to watch semi final 2 in the hotel room, which we have just done 😀😀😀

    It's time for bed!! I'm too excited for Saturday as tomorrow it's back to Liverpool for brunch with other Australian Eurovision fans, posting items back to Australia and washing clothes!! Woooo!!! Not many pics today though!!

    Nik - We left super early to stow some warm clothes at a luggage storage place called bounce. We had been so cold at the village during semi 1 we wanted to be prepared and made sure we'd be warm, expecially since I feel like I've picked up a mild head cold. And also in an attempted to line up for the arena early in the hopes of getting a barrier position.

    In the line up at the area we both felt we were a little further back than we had been for semi 1 so I honestly didn't think we'd get the coveted barrier position. But we did! And it made it so much easier on us both having the barrier to lean on. It was a great relief.

    It was a awesome show, though it is true that Semi 2 was the weaker of the two semi's.

    As always I'm fascinated by watching all the behind the scenes things. The stage crew doing their work setting up and taking down all the sets, the cameras whizzing about. Then there is feeling the heat of the flames when they use the fire jets. We were right in the thick of it.

    When we left the show it was raining lighty. We got the bag of warm clothes we had stowed at a luggage minding place and the rain started to get heavier. We made the tough call to skip the village. Your not allowed to take umbrella's into the village and there would be nowhere dry to sit. A bit disapointing but but with me having the sniffles and the rain it was the sensible choice. We grabbed some snacks at the train station on the way back then settled into the comfort and warmth of our room with a hot drink to watch semi 2 on the tv.

    But the extra good news is.......

    AUSTRALIA MADE IT TO THE FINAL!!!!!!!!!

    This year is currently the last year Australia is contracted to be in Eurovision and many of us have been on edge as to if we'd be invited back. Nothing official but we've heard on the grapevine that the BBC is keen to have us back. No word how SBS or the Australian contingent feels though. Fingers crossed.    Read more

    Walk Around Liverpool

    Suzie - Today was pretty fantastic!! We began organising our washing with a company called Fresh Laundry who picks up your washing, washes and dries it and delivers it back to you later!! All for £19 😀😀😀 Our hotel has a laundry but at £2 to wash and dry a pair of socks, £4.35 for a T shirt, £2.50 for a pair of undies...well you get the idea so I think not!!

    Then we walked into Chester city centre, 10 minutes down the road with items to send back to Australia. Ended up being 3 packages in total which are on their way back! Then we did a little shopping at Mark and Spencer's (love that place, can we bring it back to Australia?!) and Boots.

    Then we were on our way to Liverpool for brunch with other Eurovision peeps at this place called Brunchin in Williamson Square - best cheeseburger ever!! Then we explored the Cavern Quarter in Button and Mathew Street"s which are steeped in music history; it was where The Beatles began playing together and has been the site of so many performances.

    Afterwards we caught the Liverpool City Explorer bus to explore Liverpool in comfort. Our guide Matt and driver Anne were fantastic!! Matt explained that the train line between Liverpool Lime Street station and Manchester is the oldest purpose built train line in the world, making Line Street station one of the oldest in the world. We saw so many sights including the bombed out church which was bombed in World War II, the Catholic cathedral named Paddy's Teepee given its appearance. We saw Liverpool's Chinatown and it's Baltic Quarter and learnt that the affectionate name for someone from Liverpool - 'Scouser '- comes from a Scandinavian dish 'lobscouse' which is similar to an Irish stew and has red cabbage and can be served with sour cream. It's delicious! So this dish was shortened to 'scouse', so Scouser 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀 The people are kind, warm and friendly. They will help you if you are lost and/or needing help 😀 Same with Chester. What lovely places to be!!

    We then went back to the Eurovillage for the last time as tomorrow it's ticketed for the Grand Final. We met Eurovision royalty in Conchita Wurst who won Eurovision for Austria in 2014 and I even got to have a conversation with her which was lovely 😀😀 What an amazing person she is!!! We saw her perform her winning song 'Rise Like A Phoenix', along with Ruslana who won for Ukraine in 2004 with 'Wild Dances'. We also saw Katrina from Katrina and the Waves perform her winning song for the UK from 1997 'Love Shine A Light's and of course 'Walking on Sunshine'.

    Ruslana spoke about her country and how the UK has helped Ukraine with their support. Everywhere we are shown which country this Eurovision is for and why. This needs to be shown - this is for Ukraine. I stand with Ukraine.

    Nik - We had to take care of a few things this morning, sending our our laundry to be cleaned by a service before going into Chester to send home the gifts and souvenirs we have collected so far. Turned out it was close to 6kg worth and had to be sent home in 3 packages. I have a feeling we might have to do this again before the end of the trip.

    We headed into Liverpool then for lunch with a group of fellow Eurovision fans. I don't really understand how Suzie found the group. Probably through Facebook, but even though we didn't really know them it was good to connect with other fans. It was funny though as the organiser was a HUGE name dropper, talking about how he had met this artist and that artist, showing off his photo's with them every chance he got. Made me laugh.

    Then we explored the Cavern Quarter and saw where The Beatles made their start, and where many other famous singers have performed over the years. This history is amazing and I can just picture all the hippies hanging out there in the 60's.

    Then we did the Liverpool City bus tour. If we had more time we would have done the one that takes you out to Strawberry Fields and other Beatles related sites...but we were far too pressed for time. Our driver spoke about this history of Liverpool and how many in the area have ancestry in Wales and Ireland. Listening to him speak I could hear twinges of the Irish and Welsh accents.

    Then our last visit to the Eurovillage. Makes me sad to think we won't be back there again. But thank goodness we went cause we got to meet Conchita Wurst! Eurovision royalty right there. We heard her sing Rise Like A Phoenix (so iconic) which won in 2014 and also heard Rushlana with Go Wild Dancer, the winner in 2004 for Ukraine.    Read more

    Eurovision Grand Final Day, Liverpool

    Suzie - Today's the day!! A new Eurovision winner will be crowned!! Very exciting!! 😀😀😀😀

    Without having breakfast, we travelled from Chester to Liverpool early to get to the M&S Arena for the inevitable line up for the floor area. We lined up just after 10am with hundreds of other Eurovision peeps, singing songs of our countries 💜💜💜 Doors opened at 11.30am and mad scramble for the prime position on the floor - the barrier!! Somehow Nik and I got separated, I got the barrier on the other side of the stage. I attempted to get her attention waving my Eurovision scarf and eventually did, using our scarves to communicate!!!

    It was a great show with performances not only from everyone who made it into the grand final, but also of the 'Big 5' - United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, plus the winner of last year, Ukraine. The interval show was absolutely magnificent. It had Sam Ryder (runner up from the United Kingdom last year) singing his new song 'Mountain') with rock royalty Roger Taylor from Queen on drums. 'The Liverpool Songbook' was on next and featured a beautiful medley of songs from people born in Liverpool and/or about Liverpool sung by past Eurovision performers - Mahmood from Italy sung 'Imagine' by John Lennon, Cornelia Jakobs from Sweden sung 'I Turn To You' by Melanie Chisholm, Dadi Freyr from Iceland sung Atomic Kitten's 'Whole Again', Sonia performed and relived her Eurovision glory when she represented the United Kingdom in 1993 with 'Better The Devil You Know', Netta from Israel sung Dead Or Alive's 'You Spin Me Round' and the absolute highlight for me was when Duncan Laurence who represented The Netherlands sung 'You'll Never Walk Alone' which as a Liverpool FC supporter and a visitor to Liverpool, I was standing there on the Eurovision floor, hand on heart, singing the absolute hell out of the song. It was so very special!! 💜💜💜💜💜

    After I found Nik, it was off to the pub for a pint of lemonade - no cider please, it's too hot!!

    Eurovision @ British Music Experience

    Suzie - I can't think of a better place outside of the Arena to have a Eurovision watch party!! Surrounded by British music memorabilia and interactive displays, this place is absolutely fabulous!!

    It's right next to the Eurovillage, so while we were waiting for the doors to open, we were treated to the Vengaboys playing so we were all dancing on the steps at the BME.

    I was in music heaven!!! I need to come back to this place!!

    We danced to all the Eurovision songs and cheered each other's countries on when we got points from jury votes - I didn't see 12 points coming from Portugal and Iceland for Australia!! Woooo!! Other countries were generous with points for Australia too - just goes to show that Voyager (Australia's fabulous entry with 'Promise') resonated with a lot of different countries! Then the televotes came in from all over the world and then it was down to two countries - Finland's Kããrijã with 'Cha Cha Cha' and Sweden's Loreen with 'Tattoo'. We were wanting Finland to win so much, but it was not to be with Loreen winning. Germany sadly came last which was upsetting as 'Blood and Glitter' by Lord Of The Lost is an absolute banger!! Australia came 9th overall and 1st in semi 2!!.

    Eurovision Grand Final - Family Show

    Nik - We we're up and out of the hotel early this morning hoping to get a good spot in the line up. ( I personally think we should have left earlier....but we do need to get some sleep. 😴

    There were perhaps 20 - 25 people ahead Better than I expected to be honest. (But there was several lines too.) But then there was some issue with the e-tickets reader resulting in other people getting ahead of me and Suzie and I getting seperated.

    I managed to catch up...only to get seperated again in the crush to get through the doors and the rush down the stairs. This time we didn't manage to catch up again. I honestly don't know how but Suzie ended up all the way over on the other side of the stage. And in the crush of people there was no way in hell I could have made it over to her. (Though she said later she had saved me a spot.)

    The show was (to be expected) freaking awesome. Got to see some Eurovision royalty perform. Daði Freyr, Verka Serduchka, Netta Barzilai, Sam Ryder (who came second last year) and of cause last year's winner Kalush. So damn awesome.

    I didn't manage to make it to the barrier, so my back and legs were yelling by the end. I was just trying to take it all in. The atmosphere in the arena is the stuff that dreams are made of. Being among that many Eurovision fans is breathtaking. Totally worth my aching legs and back.

    Also ...the people in the Albert Dock area as we came out of the show was unbelievable. A carpet of people. I asked Suzie how we would describe the crowd to those back home. What we came up with was....imagine the Ekka on People's Day. Increase the area covered by at least four times, and multiply the people by about 10, and you *might* come close.    Read more

    Live Final@The British Music Experience

    Nik - Not being unable to secure tickets to the live show, nor the Village stream, going to the British Music Experience showing (which was right next door to the village seemed like a good alternative. For starters ..we had seats...but also...we'd be surrounded by mucic memorabilia.

    The music experience venue wasn't as big as I thought but it was still an awesome viewing and we had a great night.

    As for the results....bit disappointed and in some cases puzzled. Austria's song, Who The Hell Is Edgar was absolutely rocking in the arena. Every time the crowd went off dancing and singing. But they didn't do too well in the scoring. Germany's song, Blood and Glitter should have done better too, though I agree the staging could have been better. (It needed dragons.)

    And as for Tattoo (by Loreen) winning for Sweden...I think it might have been rigged that way so that the contest goes to Sweden for the 50th anniversary of ABBA winning Eurovision back in 1974. I really think the results were stacked.

    If the responses from the audience were anything to go by...Käärija (from Finland) should have been our winner. He is my winner anyway.

    And well done to Australia's Voyager coming in 9th. We actually were the outright winners of Semi 2....however I should also note for historical accuracy that the second semi was by far the weaker of the two. (But hey, a win in a win. 🤷)

    And now the Eurovision part of our trip is officially over.

    Our Last Day In Chester

    Suzie - It's our last day in this beautiful Roman-walled city.

    We walked around and went to Evensong at the Cathedral which began as a Benedictine monastery in 1093, by the first Earl of Chester, Hugh Lupus.

    It was my first Evensong and it was absolutely beautiful 💜

    Nik - Quite tired today but no wonder considering we didn't get to bed til 2:30 this morning.

    A quiet day for our last day in Chester. It was very much needed. Visited some more shops then explored the Cathedral. Built by Benedictine monks in 1093 but the side was used as a place of worship by the Saxons before this. Stunning gardens and stainglass windows. It is a very peaceful place.

    I've been reflecting on Eurovision as we wondered today. I could not have hoped for a better experience. Being able to share the joy of it with others who understand it has blown me away. The locals who have been so welcoming and genuinely amazed that we traveled all the way from Australia...as they put it...'just for Eurovision.'

     Seriously. Pfft.

    Train to Scotland

    Suzie - Farewell Chester, I will be back 💜 💜 💜 💜 💜 We are on our way to Scotland 💜🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💜🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 A large portion of my family are Scottish, so I'm very happy to be going back 💜💜💜

    I brought a little dragon in Wales for my sister Vicky, who she has named Aijā, which in Latvian means 'sway' and is used in lullabies. It's also the name of my favourite song from this year's Eurovision, performed by Sudden Lights representing Latvia. Vicky has requested Aijā come with us on the remainder of our journeys!

    Greyfriars Bobby's Bar

    Nik - We've arrived in Edinburgh and are settled in to our cute little rooms at Cows Gate Head, just down from the Grass Market.

    So far we've been on a very brief walk and have stopped for a very early dinner as we've been on the move since breakfast and only had half a sandwich on the train.

    I love the story of Bobby. He was the goodest boy.

    PS - We're eating at Greyfriars Bobby Bar. I had the Puy Lentil and Vegetables Cottage Pie with sweet potato and carrot mash on top. It was so delicious and wanted to make a note of it here so I remember to try to recreate it at home.    Read more

    Suzie,- Here we are in Edinburgh!! It's beautiful but chilly 💜🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💜 We walked up Victoria Street, over the George V bridge, had an early dinner at Greyfriars Bobby, then walked back to Victoria Street, up the Royal Mile, down to Holyrood Palace, to Holyrood Park, checked out the paths up to Arthur's Seat (didn't walk up it) and then walked back to our apartment 😀😀 It's adorable!! And we've only been here since 2.30pm!.Read more

    Rosslyn Chapel, Roslin

    Suzie - Wow!! What a day today was!!! Today, we went on a pre-booked tour that I have been looking forward to for months!!

    We started off getting lost even with Google's 'help' and almost missed the tour. Luckily we found where we needed to be (thanks Nik!) and the bus was still there 😀😀

    We drove to Rosslyn Chapel to start off with, not far from Edinburgh. Exquisite is the best word I can use, however it doesn't come close. The chapel dates from 1446 and was built by Sir William St Clair. Then the Reformation happened and the Chapel fell into disrepair. In 1650, Oliver Cromwell attacked nearby Rosslyn Castle and stabled his horses in the Chapel. The Chapel again fell into disrepair with the ruins being used by people in the 1800's for picnics and sketching. It's only been relatively recently that the Chapel has been restored to its original glory.

    It's just so beautifully stunning and the carvings are amazing. No photography or videography is allowed in the Chapel.    Read more

    Suzie - This village and Abbey ruins are just gorgeous!!! I had the best sandwich and hot chocolate at Twelve Triangles at Melrose!

    The Abbey ruins are getting renovations done so you can't go into the Abbey but you can walk around the wall foundations ruins and see where Robert the Bruce's heart is said to be 😀Read more

    Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland

    Suzie - Ever since I studied Roman Britain in year 12 History and was introduced to the various tribes and the subsequent 400 year Roman occupation of Britain, I have wanted to go to Hadrian's Wall, dating from AD 122. Today finally the day came for me to see it in person 😀😀😀😀 It was spectacular and I even got to walk on the wall on a public track 😀😀😀

    This was all at Housesteads Roman Fort or Vercovicum to give it's Roman name. It dates from AD 124 and was finished 10 years later. You could pay £10 to go explore the ruins of the fort or you could continue up the hill and go to the wall. I chose the latter.

    We visited the nearby Milecastle 37, which was a Roman mile away from Housesteads. Every Roman mile there was a smaller fort of 25-30 soliders to guard against any marauding barbarians, meaning Scots. Housesteads had 800 auxillary soliders.    Read more

    I've been eveywhere man!

    A tour today. We got lots on the way there and almost missed it.

    First stop was Rosslyn Chapel of Da Vinci Code fame. A work of fiction true with most of the 'history' made up or tweaked to suit the author's needs, but it has helped to shine a light on a few historical locations, improve tourism to these places which in turn helps for the places to be maintained and preserved. Which is the case for Rosslyn.

    Photos of this place do not do it justice. Probably one of the reasons you're not allowed to photograph inside the chapel. The carvings, the ceiling. Stunning. And the sad story of the apprentice stone mason who was murdered by the jealous master Mason. I'm glad the apprentice has not been forgotten in history.

    Then to a town called Melrose and the Abbey there where Robert the Bruce's heart is burried.

    Then a stop at Hadrian's Wall where we were able to walk a small section and see the 37th milehouse. So cold and windy there.

    And of cause a short stop at the boarder between Scotland and England for a few photos.
