    The major town being visited today is Kristiansund, some many miles south from our breakfast location which was the harbour at Trondheim.
    The stop over at Kristiansund was for just an hour, so we opted to remain on board.
    On our way south Syd spotted the gas refinery on the mainland where he worked for a week over 30 years ago.
    The ship navigated narrow passageways through the islands prior to hitting open water on the approach to Kristiansund.
    The previous day's Phase 10 game was completed, and we enjoyed another game of Barbu in the bar/lounge as we passed by the beautiful scenery.    En savoir plus

    Bronnoysund

    The outside temperatures were getting warmer as we continued southbound. With not as much ice and snow on the hill sides the landscape appeared less dramatic as we weaved our way through the islands along this coast. In the morning we passed across the Arctic Circle once again.
    At Bronnoysund the ship docked for a couple of hours,and we were able to stretch our legs in the town. We found only one small shop open for business, as Norway shuts down to celebrate Easter.
    In the evening the crew set up a game of Easter Bingo in the bar/lounge which the boys reluctantly joined in. The staff were dressed as chickens and us oldies had difficulty keeping up with the number calls, which were done in three languages. Karen won the full house, main prize, and we are now proud owners of a Havila flag signed by the captain.    En savoir plus

    Lofoten Islands

    We had high expectations for today, as we knew the ship was sailing into a particularly beautiful part of the coastline. Our breakfast stop was at Harstad, where upon leaving, the ship blasted the foghorn three times. The ship's captain lives in the town and was telling his mates that he was on his way.
    A flying stop at Risoyhamn, before we hit the Ss's of Sortland, Stokmarknes, Svolvaer in the evening and Stamsund overnight. Stokmarknes is the location of the headquarters of Hurtigruiten, where the business started and where they have their museum. The stopover was for an hour - we took the opportunity for a quick walk in the snow.
    The journey was all we expected on a bright sunny day, islands linked by bridges and ferries, a narrow passage (Raftsund) between Lofoten Island and its neighbour. Sea eagles in the air near Trollfjord and little settlements tucked into the hillsides, surrounded by snow covered mountains and trees. Marvellous.
    The boys enjoyed a visit to Lotopils, a micro brewery, where they learned a little bit about the art of brewing up here, care of the founder and owner of the enterprise. They got to sample 7 of the pils and ales brewed on the premises which were very nice - the IPA being the favourite.    En savoir plus

    Hammerfest

    Continuing our journey - our primary stop today was the most northerly city of Hammerfest, but first there was a quick stop at Havoysund, where one person joined the vessel and three people disembarked - to be greeted by family.
    At Hammerfes we had a quick jaunt around the bay to stretch our legs, and to replenish the tonic water supplies.
    We then moved on to stop off at Oksfjord, a remote community tucked away down a deep fjiord the lady announcer advised that her home was hereabouts, and as we left, she advised that her village was tucked up an even more remote fjord, surrounded by high mountains (1200m) and with a glacier a little further up the inlet. Apparently, in the summer months, with no night-time, sleep does not feature too strongly-parties can start at any time of the day.
    There was an early evening stop at Skervoy and overnight at Tromso and Finnsnes.    En savoir plus

    Kirkenes

    Leaving Kirkenes in the afternoon, the southbound journey promised daylight visits to the majority of ports visited in the dark on the northbound journey.
    Our first stop was Vardo, where an impressive radar station is perched above the town, followed by Batsfjord at twilight. Mehamn, Kjollerfjord and Honningsvag were visited overnight.    En savoir plus

    Kirkenes

    We awoke to glorious sunshine once again. We were berthed in the port of Vadso, the last port northbound prior to Kirkenes. As we ate our breakfast we passed stunning scenery. We noticed 2 or 3 dolphins (or porpoises - hard to tell from a distance) and large lumps of ice floating in the sea. Apparently the gulf stream does not reach this far, meaning that the sea is considerably colder. The forecast for today was a high of minus 8 and a min of minus 15. Several layers of clothing were going to be necessary when we venture off the ship. As soon as we had docked at Kirkenes we disembarked and headed for a coach heading for a snow hotel. What an excursion this turned out to be!! The tour guide gave an interesting commentary as we drove through the snowy streets and uphill to reach the hotel. Before entering the hotel we visited the huskies. Many of the dogs were hitched up to sleighs ready to take groups of people for rides through the snowy terrain. Others were fastened to their kennels and were excited to see all of the people on trips. 7 or 8 sleighs pulled off, and as the last one left the dogs left behind howled and howled. Apparently the dogs really enjoy being active and running in the snow pulling sledges. Presumably those left behind will get their chance later in the day. We spent an hour or so investigating the inside of the snow hotel. We have never seen anything like it before. Temperatures inside were set at minus 4!!!! 13 bedrooms in total, each with a different theme. The bedframes, bedside tables and headboards were all carved out of ice. The walls and ceilings made from snow. How anyone sleeps in these temperatures bewilders us. In the bar area we were served a fruit drink. After visiting all of the bedrooms and the hotel reception we were given a reindeer sausage and another hot fruity drink in the restaurant area of the snow hotel. Before we boarded the coach back we visited reindeer who were living in a field behind the hotel. The males shed their antlers before winter but females retain theirs. This is because the females are usually pregnant over winter, and the antlers enable them to battle their way through undergrowth and reach more food. The coach returned us to the ship just in time for our departure. Now heading back the way we came - a 5 day trip back to Bergen. The menu on board has now changed to the Arctic menu. For lunch we had the choice of reindeer broth, fried char, smoked herring sandwich amongst other things. We eat 3 or 4 small dishes (a bit like Norwegian tapas). All very tasty.En savoir plus

    Honningsvag

    We were geared up for a midnight wake-up to see the Northern Lights, but it did not happen. Clearly, the sky clouded over a bit too much.
    The voyage commenced northbound, and we passed through beautiful sounds once again, with snow laden cliffs cascading down to the waterline on either side of us. We continue to see isolated houses dotted here and there on the mountain sides. Unbelievable that people live so far north. It would not suit us with winter lasting 6 to 7 months here and bitterly cold temperatures. Temperatures inside the ship are toasty. We covered up considerably to venture outside with our camera as the -5 deg C air temperature apparently would feel like -11 degrees C with the wind chill.
    The ship docked at Honningsvag, the port that serves the vehicle transfers to see the Northern Cape.
    We strapped on our snow spikes and had a wander around the town and port side area - all very quaint and colourful. The harbour was full of small fishing vessels berthed up for the Easter break. The only shop open (it being a Sunday) was the Christmas shop. We had a good look around the 2 floors of goodies and bought a couple of wooden decorations to take home. The town looked very pretty in the sunlight.
    In the afternoon Jo and Karen attended the talk on board about the Sami people. An interesting briefing, informing us of the history and culture of the Samis. Their customs, religion and languages are now recognised constitutionally throughout Scandanavia.
    With the skies clear and predicted overnight temperature of -16 deg C, we expect that the Northern Lights may put up a show tonight.
    We were not disappointed. Just before 9pm we were informed that indeed the northern lights had appeared. Everyone rushed up to deck 9 and ventured outside to gaze at the night sky. It was bitterly cold - bbrrrr! The lights were amazing, just as we had imagined. Impossible to capture on camera, but we enjoyed the experience despite the temperatures outside.
    Leaving port in late afternoon we stopped off briefly at Kjollefjord in the daylight, and overnight at Mehamn, Berlevag, Batsfjord and Vardo.    En savoir plus

    Tromso

    Waking up to clear skies, we wound our way through narrow passages and sounds. The landscape, covered in snow and ice was looking ruggedly beautiful. We passed by remote villages by the fjords, hugging the strip of land next to the sea. The ship stopped off at Finnsnes to drop off or pick up passengers, many of whom were returning to family to celebrate the Easter break.
    At Tromso, we disembarked to join an excursion. 15 of us piled into a mini bus, and we were taken up to the top of the island to a snow-covered parkland. We had enrolled on a snow- shoe walk, and our charming guide took us through the forest park, stopping off at intervals so we could take in the views and learn a little bit more about the town.
    The walk ended with a small campfire with warming beverage and nibbles, but not before we all had the opportunity to try our hand at tobogganing. The locals made it look so easy, which we were unable to emulate. We found ourselves spinning in a complete circle as we sped down the hill. It was great fun, though - and must have been quite amusing for anybody looking on.
    In early evening we set off to, visit the ports at Skjervoy, Oksfjord, Hammerfest and Havoysund.    En savoir plus

    Bodo - day 4

    Upon waking we looked out of our cabin window as we sailed past mountains covered in snow. We soon received an announcement to inform us that we would shortly be crossing the Arctic circle, which we did whilst sitting at breakfast. There is a metal globe on an island in the sea marking the position of this. However, we discovered that, apparently the Arctic circle moves 15 metres north each year - all due to the pull of the moon. The morning was spent at sea as we journeyed towards Bodo, our next stopping off place. We passed through snow-covered fjords - all very beautiful. Jo and Karen attended the Arctic circle ceremony. This involved a cupful of ice being poured down people's backs, followed by a drink of "pure vitamins" (a mix of chilli, lemon and grapefruit juice - quite revolting!).
    The ship meandered through the small passageways, which hug the coastline, giving us great views of the countryside with its smattering of local communities. At Ornes, the final stop prior to Bodo, a number of people disembarked the ship. We had planned on disembarking at Bodo to take a walk around the town. However the rain upon our arrival there put us off, and we opted to stay on board. We visited the bar for cocktails for the girls and beers for the men. We played cards (Barbu and Phase 10) - great fun.
    The night-time stop overs were in and around the Lofoten Islands, apparently a particularly beautiful part of the journey, Stamsund, Svolvaer, Stokmarknes, Sortland, Risoyhamn and just prior to breakfast Harstad..    En savoir plus

    Trondheim

    After another very peaceful night, where we were unaware of the ship having docked at the other ports on the journey north, we arrived in Trondheim not long after another very satisfying breakfast. We are enjoying the variety on each menu, with Karen in particular enjoying the variety of fish - herring and smoked salmon for breakfast, and salted cod as part of a lunch spread.
    As we approached the city, one of the Havila ships was just leaving its berth. We were out on deck as they approached. Suddenly, our ship's fog horn shattered the silence. It was quite a shock.

    We had three hours to look around the city, which we did on foot. We visited the Royal Family Trondheim residence (Stiftsgarden, inhabited by King Harald and Queen Sonja whenever they visit Trondheim). As we walked through the town square, we saw the monument to Trondheim's founder (the Viking king Olav Trggvason) - mounted on an 18-metre high obelisk. Next stop the Nidaros cathedral and Bishops Palace, followed by the old town bridge (often referred to as Lykkens Portal, meaning gate of happiness)
    We wandered through the old town (Bakklandet) behind the warehouses on the fjiord, which was very quaint. Beautiful brightly coloured wooden houses lined each street.
    We reboarded the boat in time for a quick G and T before lunch.
    After lunch, the boat hugged the coastline, taking us through to nightfall past quaint inlets and seaside communities. During the afternoon, we attended the information briefing in the conference hall on deck 6. The presentation given was quite haphazard and amusing at times. It gave a very brief history of Norway, starting with the Ice Age, then detailing the Vikings in Norway and through to present day time. All completed in under 40 minutes!!
    Leaving Trondheim the overnight stops were Rorvik, Bronnoysund, Sandnessjoen and Nesna.    En savoir plus

    Alesund

    The ship is very comfortable. The cabins provide excellent accommodation. The ship is very new, about one year old, and runs on lpg engines with electric batteries and as a result very quiet in operation.
    Our first stop on the trip ( that we were aware of - the ship stops off at a number of villages and towns on the route north during the night) was Alesund, where we were able to get off and have a walk around. Alesund was extensively rebuilt after a major fire in the early 20th century and is host to a collection of art nouveau inspired developments. Every thing in the city is spick and span, very little graffiti to be seen anywhere.
    We had a walk around the town and visited the high point above the city, accessed via steep inclines and 418 steps. The views from the top were worth the effort.
    After that, we had a mooch in the touristy shops and resisted the temptation to buy a Norwegian Troll, tempting though it may have been.
    Returning to the ship we enjoyed a pre lunch G and T in our cabin, followed by a very pleasant lunch. The staff in the dining area all being delightful.
    As we sat down for our evening meal the boat departed, in the dark, to proceed further up the coast.
    Overnight the boat will be visiting Molde and Kristiansund, with a morning stop over at Trondheim.    En savoir plus

    Bergen

    The day started like clockwork with our taxi arriving at 6:30am to pick us up. After stopping off in Otterbourne for Syd and Jo we were on our way to Gatwick for a late morning flight to Norway.
    Our eta for Gatwick was 8:30 duly met, which gave us some time for breakfast and a quick visit to the 'Spoons (for the men). Our Norwegian Airlines flight left bang on time and after a smooth flight we arrived in Bergen 15 minutes early.
    The Flybussen took us in through the city directly to the Havila terminal where we were expecting to be able to book in directly onto the boat.
    This is where things went a bit awry. Check in was delayed due to "some technical issue" on the boat. We watched the boat disappear from its dock to return immediately but facing the other way. The land crew were unable to advise what the problem may be other than that it was a technical issue.
    After some time the boat disappeared again to return facing in the previous direction. We were all hopeful that we may soon be boarding, but that was sadly not the case. We found a quiet spot in an upstairs cafe area to wait out the delay and watched as the other 280 guests and ourselves got progressively more hungry and more exasperated.
    Eventually we were able to board to join another queue for the allocation of eating times and tables for the early part of our trip. The ladies with permanent smiles on the reception desk were dealing with a lot of complaints about the boarding procedures, justifiably so.
    Eventually, we were able to grab some food from the on-board cafe to beat our hunger ( we were not prepared to wait in another queue for the main dining room to become available.)
    We returned to the dining room much later in the evening where we were treated to some delightful food, very much adding some joy to an otherwise frustrating late afternoon.
    The ship left Bergen at 8:30pm to begin the journey to The North Cape.
    Tonight the boat will be stopping at Floro, Maloy and Torvik prior to arriving at Alesund in the morning.    En savoir plus

    Chandlers Ford, UK

    After a very long flight back from Taipei, an extra 3 hours in the air due to a change in flight path - to the south of the Himalaya mountains - presumably to avoid flying over China
    Syd and Jo were there to pick us up.
    For once the passage through Heathrow was slick long may it continue.

    Eatons Hill

    We had a family trip into the city to see the South Bank family Christmas show. Arriving a little early we met Renee, who had just left her office, at a street Xmas market.
    The show was a mini panto which was well performed. Afterwards we tumbled into Ole restaurant for a tapas evening meal. Very nice too. The south bank was very colourful with plenty of people enjoying the lagoon. As we walked back to the car we stopped to listen briefly to the carols being performed by the Brisbane river. A very festive atmosphere.
    The following day we celebrated Jamie's 40th birthday with another visit into the city. Parking up at New Farm we walked into the city along the river - the girls and granny taking turns on the electric scooter. Our target was the restaurant "Kickin'Inn" specialising in Cajun seafood.
    Jamie was given a complimentary prawn martini salad for his birthday, which set the tone, and we ordered a bag of mixed seafood for the table - literally. The youngsters had their own choices made up too.
    The food was fabulous, eaten directly from the table, and we were provided with gloves and bibs to aid the process.
    The staff sang hbty and presented birthday boy a chocolate cake to finish. Summer managed to eat most of it.
    In the evening as we hadn't eaten enough (!!?) the girls turned out the chocolate cake that they had prepared for dad - yum    En savoir plus

    Eatons Hill

    Now we start the serious preparations for Xmas. The streets around Jamie are awash with Christmas lights with some most spectacular displays of decorations.
    We have spent a lot of our time in and around the pool with the girls. Sophie and Sammy perform their acrobatics at every opportunity. Little Summer is getting very confident in the water, and can now swim underwater across the pool.
    Renee had Wednesday off work, so we all piled into the car once again to complete the Northlands Gorge walk, which is part walk part swim. A pretty challenging "walk" with steep ascents and descents for the walking part of the trek. On several occasions we waded and swam through fairly deep water. Summer used her inflatable shark to aid her buoyancy, and was confident to leap into the water whenever necessary. We were all weary when we reached the car after the return journey.
    The pile of presents under the tree grows each day. Santa delivers the Christmas stocking contents for the 3 girls, the rest of the presents being put under the tree. Excitement is mounting as the big day draws near.
    The weather is largely being kind to us. After returning from Stradbroke to high temperatures and scorching sun the temperatures are now more reasonable (26 - 30 degrees). A storm or 2 thrown in, but generally pool weather. We eat most meals outside - making the most of the opportunity to do so before returning to a British winter.    En savoir plus

    Amity Point

    Our last day on the island saw us get up early to pack all away and head for an early ferry back to the mainland.
    We enjoyed a brilliant week with the family, finishing off with a meal at the local Community Club on Saturday night. Travelling day was a busy day - packing everything up into our 2 cars (in intense heat), driving to the ferry on the island and to Eatons Hill from the ferry in Cleveland and then unloading everything into Jamie's house. We were all exhausted and very hot and sweaty by the time the cars were empty. We all plunged into the swimming pool and relaxed there for an hour or 2.En savoir plus

    Amity Point

    The island has a rich wildlife population including kangaroo, wallaby, koala goanna, and a range of birdlife too. We spotted many dolphins in the sea around us, and Jamie kayaked alongside sea turtles and rays. We were lucky enough to see it all during our stay. A little koala climbed up and down 3 different trees next to our camp pitches, before choosing the tree to remain in. We spent our week searching out the various sites on the Island. We walked around the point to see the northern beaches and drove to the inland lakes. Brown Lake (so called because the water is brown due to tannin in the water from the surrounding trees) was reached by car and Blue Lake via a 3 km bush walk. We extended our walk from the Blue Lake to the top of the island on a baking hot day, and were very relieved to get to the lookout for our lunch at the end of the Grass Tree trail. We took the See All trail back to the car in the shade of the tree canopy.
    The gorge walk at Point Lookout was a favourite walk which we completed twice. From the boardwalk we could view dolphins, turtles, and rays in the water below. The colours in the sea were vibrant.
    On two days of our week's stay we all piled into Jamie's car to drive onto Main beach, once to do some fishing with the girls and the second time we visited the keyhole lakes behind the foreshore. The drive was only accessible by 4WD vehicles. After deflating his car tyres to the required pressure Jamie did a sterling job of getting us onto the shore, although we did get stuck in the sand once. The ride was fairly bumpy until we reached the sea shore.    En savoir plus

    Amity Point

    All loaded up in two cars and with our camper trailer in tow we took the 12:30 ferry crossing from Cleveland near Brisbane over to Dunwich on Stradbroke Island.
    Stradbroke is the second largest sand island in the world after Fraser Island just to the north of Brisbane, and was formed as the result of northerly currents sweeping up the east coast of Australia over millions of years.
    After a short drive from the ferry we arrived at the Amity Point camp site, and by 4 pm we were ready to explore our immediate surrounds. The site had a shark safe swimming area adjacent to a public access jetty. We watched the sun go down and a little later a dolphin swam around the end of the jetty for a short while. The jetty was used extensively by anglers after squid and fish for eating, and also provided a great platform for jumping into the sea.    En savoir plus

    Eatons Hill

    We had booked into the morning performance of the dance show, so we all arrived in Redcliffe nice and early to enable the girls to get ready for the show.
    We wandered down to the sea front to pass some time prior to settling down in our seats at the Redcliffe theatre.
    What followed was most impressive - two and a half hours of dance to the theme of "Christmas Wonderland" based upon The Polar Express.
    There was a cast of 150, all from the 5th Element dance School, and the ages of the performers ranged from 18 months (dancing polar bear) to 22 years. The costumes were very colourful throughout.
    Sammy and Sophie impressed us, once again, with their efforts.
    After the morning performance we left the girls to get ready for their next performance in the afternoon, and we returned to Eatons Hill to prepare ourselves for a week long camping trip with the family to Stradbroke Island.    En savoir plus

    Eatons Hill

    The last day of our road trip saw us complete the drive north to Brisbane. 200km all on the Pacific Highway passing through the Gold Coast.
    We arrived in time to spend a little time in the pool with Sophie and Samantha before they needed to go off for a dress rehearsal of their dance show.
    They were scheduled for 7 hours dancing at the theatre in Redcliffe where the performance was to take place tomorrow.
    Thereafter we enjoyed the company of Summer, Jamie and Renee at home by the pool. We drank our Friday fizz to accompany a wonderful bbq cooked by Jamie.    En savoir plus

    Evans Head

    We took a morning walk along the trail through the woods behind the beach, then walked along the beach to the river mouth. There were a number of people already enjoying themselves in the surf. A little bit further there was a pod of about 20 dolphins swimming up the bay.
    We enjoyed a splendid ice cream sundae in the village before taking ourselves off to the beach.    En savoir plus

    Evans Head

    Another baking hot day was on the cards so we got up early to strike the tent before the sun rose too high, and made our way north once again.
    Evans Head is tucked in between two places we had visited previously.
    By mid afternoon we were all set up, once again so we made our way to the beach to dive into he surf. There was a nice off shore breeze running so the surf was quite strong.    En savoir plus

    Hat Head

    Today we drove off site to visit Arakoon en route to a place called South West Rocks. At Arakoon we walked the Monument Hill trail, so called as it features a monument to Germans interned during World War 1, 2 of whom died in the local Trial Bay prison. This walk led onto the Bridle Path
    and then ono the Powder Store trail. a small black snake slithered across Karen's path along the way. At the end of the walk we visited the Trial Bay cafe/restaurant but were disappointed to be told that only items on the lunch menu could be purchased. Karen was looking forward to a cool cider - but alcohol not allowed without food. Alan fancied a piece of hummingbird cake with a coffee, but cake was not allowed during lunchtime!! Seemed stupid rules to us - but rules are rules!!!
    In the afternoon we drove the short distance to South West Rocks, where we found Horseshoe Bay (a spot that had been recommended by people we had met on another trip to Oz) and another delightful beach. Again we were in and out of the sea in an effort to cool off.
    On our drive back to base we encountered a couple of dingoes, our first ever in Australia. They were very timid and scuttled off into the bush as we stopped the car to have a closer look.    En savoir plus
