    Driving from Albuquerque to Kingman,AZ

    Aug 2–3, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We drove our Kia Telluride to Kingman the first day. We spent the night at SpringHill suites and as usual when in Kingman, had a great steak dinner at the DamBar😀 This was the first time I ever had shredded brussel sprouts-they were spectacular-hand shredded, the deep fat fried briefly, removed and lightly battered and covered in cooked onions, back into the fried briefly and the given just a twirl of maple syrup! Deadly good, oh, the steak was also great😀 The next morning we woke up, had a good breakfast at the hotel and then headed North thru Vegas past the East side of Death Valley at over 110 degrees and up to Lee Vining. This is a tiny village on hwy 395, that acts as the gateway to the back country entrance to Yosemite ( yes reservations required).Read more

  • Kingman, AZ to Lee Vining,NV

    Aug 4–6, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Driving from I70 at Kingman to the tiny village of Lee Vining, the Eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park, and on the shores of Mono Lake. The dust devils are in Death Valley National Park. We were driving parallel to Death Valley when it was 110 degrees. Then we went thru the small town of Beatty,NV where we found hundreds of adorable wild donkeys!
Once in lee Vining we made reservations to enter Yosemite, driving over 10,000 feet over Tioga Pass and down the far side to gorgeous mountain, wildflower, and lake views.

  • Kingman thru Las Vegas to Lee Vining, CA

    Aug 4–6, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

We chose a new route to get up into the Eastern Sierra’s- going North on 95 up the Eastern side of Death Valley instead of going thru Death Valley in the summer, or up the Western side. We had previously done both😀. This was a beautiful trip filled with high desert views, snaking up and down the high mountain passes and Nevada farmlands until we crossed back into mid-California just north of Bishop to get to our first goal of Lee Vining to see Mono Lake with its’ multitude of craters, and Yosemite from its backside.Read more

  • August 4, 2024-driving the Tioga Pass

    August 5, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

After a great breakfast in Lee Vining we drove up the access road to the Tioga Pass entrance to Yosemite N.P. We had plenty of warning that we needed on-line reservations to get thru the gate.so we were ready as we approached our entry time slot at noon. The Tioga Pass is at just under 10,000 feet altitude, so Paula was wearing her oxygen. We spent a wonderful afternoon driving and walking all over the high meadows, around gorgeous mountain lakes, and zooming along on serpentine cliffside roads . I have been to Yosemite many times but this was the first time that this road had been open.Read more

  • Murder Mystery night out

    August 10, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 81 °F

Paula and I joined Gary,Pat and her sister,Judy, for a night out in the big city of Sacramento. We drove downtown, found an actual parking spot and entered this re- purposed Old Spaghetti Factory. We joined a crowd of other participants, got briefed
on the process and procedures and started by enjoying a spaghetti dinner. Throughout dinner members of the action staff would give us all hints that we had to use to arrive at a conclusion as to “ who dunnit”. The kitschy remodeling of the former restaurant were very cool and we all had a great time guessing wrongly on the perpetrator 😘.

We drove to their home in Loomis, CA approximately 30 minutes from Sacramento. We had a wonderful time visiting, and meeting the wide variety of pet’s and wildlife that call this home. We also had a great evening participating in an active Murder Mystery venue in Sacramento with Pat’s sister, Judy.Read more

    August 12, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

While we were in Northern California we also visited our cruise and RV buddies just 20 minutes up the road from Gary & Pat. Bob had just had his huge 70th Birthday party at their home 2 days previously, but their home was immaculate! Note:Bob does all the maintenance and landscaping by himself with an occasional assist by a local teenager-including all the frequent work on their own lake😀.Read more

  • Wine country to the North Cali coast

    Aug 14–15, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 63 °F

Onward and upward thru wine country, Napa and Sonoma, to the coast at Bodega Bay. We loved the beautiful miles of vineyard surrounding gorgeous wineries that looked more like mansions or hotels than businesses. We wound our way through a lot of country roads, wondering where our navigator was taking us until we finally saw the Pacific ocean as Bodega Bay appeared around a corner. The views of the beaches, hills and rivers were impressive, but the we came across groves of windswept trees that are truly spectacular!
I found a small boutique hotel along hwy101 and got a beautiful room at the top of 3 flights of stairs-we were both grateful that we had decreased our overnight bag to only one apiece. Next on the agenda was supper, but that proved to be a challenge in this tiny town. Nothing was open where we had been directed, but after stopping at the only open business, a surf shop, our steps were pointed 15 minutes back down the highway to a roadside fish restaurant/shack. The fish chowder was excellent but the rest of the meal just provided fuel for our bodies without happiness for our palate😀.

  • Eureka, California on the coast

    Aug 15–17, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 95 °F

Our next stop along the West coast was the old town of Eureka. On the way there we made several stops in, thru and around Giant Redwood Forests. The Drive-Thru Tree Park took us through the Chandelier Tree after we were privileged to drive thru many gorgeous groves of magnificent, huge redwoods as we moved up the coast.
When we arrived in Eureka we stayed in a historic hotel , the Eureka Inn. This extraordinary edifice dated back to the 1800’s, had been visited by several Presidents and had been renovated several times, but still was furnished in period antiques and structure. No air conditioning, but we borrowed a small fan for our 1 night. The town was beautiful with an interesting mansion, good stores (restocked at Walmart) and a delicious seaside restaurant.

  • Crescent city to Grants Pass to Medford

    Aug 17–18, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

We continued up the coast on Hwy 101 starting in the fog. after the fog burned off we stayed on the coast road all the way to Crescent City along the Smith river canyon avoiding lots of smoke from wildfires. Then we turned inland headed for Oregon. We were making good time so we bypassed Grants Pass and wound up in Medford, Oregon for the night. Our goal for a protracted stop was Bend, a ski town near Mt Hood that always appears on lists of best places to live.Read more

  • Bend, Oregon

    Aug 18–20, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

From Medford we drove the sweet drive to Bend, Oregon. We have heard many times about how great and scenic Bend is, and how pricey😁. It was not over rated-beautiful supper along the Deschutes River across from a lovely park with wonderful seafood! Then we drove around in the mountains, unfortunately a lot of our scenery was marred by the remnants of wildfires. We loved Bend and put it on our list of places we intend to return to for an extended stay.Read more

  • Yakima, Washington.

    Aug 22–25, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Crossing the Columbia River North to Washington to explore the “dry” side of the state staying in Yakima. This is our last frontier stop before we get to the metropolitan areas of Tacoma-Seattle. Yakima is the center of the wine industry of Washington and is surrounded by flourishing vineyards (see Napa and Sonoma valleys). It was a pleasure resting up there before heading over the passes via Mt. Ranier National Park on our way to Tacoma.Read more

After leaving Yakima we drove West to get to Tacoma over Chinook Pass (5433 feet). We spent several hours in the park, had perfect weather and got gorgeous views of the peak. I have climbed on this peak multiple times while we lived in Tacoma getting my Emergency Medicine residency 1987-90. We would go skiing at Crystal Mountain on the flank of Ranier frequently during the winters and go mountain climbing on the glaciers shown here during the summers.Read more

  • Seattle to get onboard our cruise ship

    Aug 31–Sep 1, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

After relaxing for 5 days in Tacoma just seeing old sights and showing Paula where I had lived in the 1980’s, we drove up to Seattle to spend the night before actually boarding. We were very concerned about all of the violence that had going on in Seattle so we did our best to avoid the normal tourist areas and most of downtown. The only hotel that was relatively close to the cruise ship pier was downtown- they had full time security for the hotel and the parking area and locked their doors after 5:00pm-a fortress mentality to keep people safe. We took a couple of photos of the Space Needle as we were driving to our ship. The cruise ship had a long-term parking area where we could leave our car for the 2 months that we would be gone, with valet service to handle our excessive number of bags, transport us to the ship and unload our bags to a ship porter-a lifesaver!😁 All of the Holland America cruise ships, based in Amsterdam cutely have their ship’s names end in Dam since Holland is surrounded by dams to keep the sea out. Our ship this time is the Westerdam, 2000 guests and 1000 crew. We paid for a large suite for our trip since it was going to be so long and it was worth it.This is the longest cruise that either of us had ever taken so we are very excited to be here!🙏❤️😁Read more
