Trial Run

This is a practice to see what can be achieved, and perhaps adding pictures. A different format to get used to ,but related to Travel Pod apparently ,which will be so good, ability to also make a book at the end... We will see how it goes, plenty of time to perfect, and add everyone into the mix. Hopefully it is easy access as well for the readers.Læs mere

Hong Kong

Our journey began in slight alarm ,when Sam came in from retrieving the paper with snow on him!!! However as daylight came, it settled ,and was a nice sunny day by time we were in Ophir, a breeze and rising temperatures, good journey and ever amazed at the “green” to the tops of the hills, it’s so lush, and the grass is rippling in the wind….!
Mum having a game of scrabble with Jennifer when we arrived , looking more tiny than ever…! The following day not so good, with many hours spent at the medical centre and in A & E, for she and I, high BP causing issues ,but out of not good situations ,come good things ,like the kindness we experienced along the way, everyone was so good, at A & E they took her in ,out of the cold waiting room ,and popped her in heated blankets ,and gave us picnic lunches, it was later in the afternoon by then , Thelma came with supplies.. we couldn’t even eat .. Lots of time to spend with Mum, we had great chats..and some laughter along the way… Sunday we had a lunch at Thelma’s, with much that was delicious… and that Mum enjoyed. She is warm and kindly treated, and exactly where she wants to be.. Christian has made a great recovery from his operation, and he hardly gives it a thought these days he said...The little dogs a joy, in our bed the first morning...! A cosy warm home.
Now a wee update from a VERY HOT Hong Kong,35o , we have heat warnings, and it is fryingly hot… Humidity is much lower, just 50%,so its burning, it’s their spring ,and like the world ..its far too warm.! Of course cities of this size make it seem worse…!
Our journey was very nice food and gentle souls ,quite comfortable..glided in to a calm, fairyland, the harbour is spectacular.. a little early…LOVED Peter Rabbit, so, so gorgeous ,just felt like watching it again, not for kids …at all… The rest of the in flight entertainment was a bit limited, some good music, but Peter was worth waiting for.! None of the other ones I had been wanting to view.. It’s a long way, but we were off at speed ,on arrival.. and the many ks walked ,would have been good for us, spotted at 100 paces by our collectors, and swept in with a very nice older chap, who told us snippets…Like a new bridge to Macau has been built, thought we may go, but its way out by the Airport, sooo not this time.. We came in a different way, and saw the Fruit Market which operated at night, a huge conglomeration of trucks and boxes, and very busy men distributing it all for deliveries to be fresh for the morning. .We were settled here by 10.30, about 3am our time…
First room a dud…SMOKING room.. smelt in the whole floor /corridors ,and we had ashtray and lighter !!!.. the nice room was smoky…NO, thank you, not having that, so as I had requested Non smoking, didn’t feel in the least bad …up to the 18th,to a much better one..Our view is of the Harbour, gorgeous, hence the name Harbour Grand, been before, a long time ago, and it is being refurbished..an older place now, but has the spacious rooms and bathrooms.. The food is very expensive now here, as is pretty much everything, we notice..We do have a little Coffee Shop that has better options..
Had a good 5 hours sleep which is okay, and we are slightly out of the main area, in Whampoa, which is residential, and nice, some 60 story buildings of apartments around now,..7.5 million now occupy this city… just 5 mins in our regularly run shuttle, so we were off to see Dowson, at Times Optical, me for glasses and Sam for lens, Dowson is in Australia, sadly ,but Eddie is our man, so we are all set for a fraction of the price at home, collecting at 3pm tomorrow. Then to Airisim, for Sam’s supplies, a new extended shop here now ,easy walking, well not so much today, but there was shade…and cool watermelon juice along the way…got everything.. AND new swimming shorts ,yet again ,his are residing at home, a garage sale he thinks, as this happens each time…!
Back mid afternoon after mingling with the masses ,and saying NO to a hundred Tailors…its all just part of the game..just look and smile at it all so ,so, hectic.,an amazing place that we still love.! People are so covered for the UV, lightweight suit things that completely cover them, just provision for the eyes, and babies have various coverings, purpose built.. That is why their skin is beautiful, and many of ours ,of course is not.! There are all the beautiful things ,large and small here of course,so much to see such an experience, still...
We adjourned to our roof top pool later, its nice, and did find a shady covered chair, but the tiled surrounds actually were seriously burning my feet.!Like at the Dead Sea..!! Great care to be taken in not getting burnt… Refreshing, though quite warm ,water, and the people watching is a delight, this is Cell Phone nightmare stuff, just never out of their
hands ,even in the water, they have special packets to keep on talking ,and take sooo many “selfies”,it’s so funny..!
We have chosen our tea , it seems like we are late of course ,some dumpling delights, a little later on..!
Tomorrow is to be more excessive heat, but we will explore nearby, and be ready for the glasses at 3pm..
On to Amsterdam at 12.15 am.. Hope you are all in place, this is a trial of things distant ,and maybe a map or two should appear…
Bye from us, slightly weary now, in Hong Kong..
Pics are our Pool, and Room view..Læs mere

Hong Kong To Amsterdam

Hong Kong To Amsterdam
Our last day in Hong Kong was so good ,we were out early, still very hot 30o, at 8am..but we walked in our neighbourhood ,amongst the many Families going to work and taking the children to day care and school, all in uniform ,and they are very cute of course.. Little cafes with things western and also local food ,a big circuit in the spotless surrounds ,the washing all out in various ingenious forms of securement.. high above. Back for breakfast ,coffee shop with harbour views, and later further afield for a glimpse of more local life, supermarket in depth, its such precision ,of beautiful display. Lunch in an area of so many different foods, lots of Japanese and Bakery items, quite amazed that in this bustling area, a Mother left her little boy, gathered from Day care with all his treasures ,pictures and books, to settle, just beside us, and went off into the supermarket ,for a reasonable time, came back with food and off again, not many countries that could happen ,these are gentle people ,quiet and disciplined ,walking everywhere we don’t ever feel unsafe ,never have..I know there is organised crime on a huge scale, but we still love Hong Kong, after 8 times..and still much to see, restricted this time with the glasses being made, and we journeyed off for them later in the day ,all perfect ,after a wait in a downtown mall ,so much to watch ,needing to be out of the intense heat…
Dinner packed and transported collected exactly on time as always happens in Hong Kong…The Airport more vast than ever, and we walked what seemed miles, even a train this time ,and in the end seemed to be roughly where we have been before.??? A 777 300 this time very huge and maybe not packed, as usual ,it’s a long way, and was a bumpy ride ,but sleep possible I think for longer than it seemed..A full and active day helped there…
Need to share the pictures so a smaller post...Læs mere

Amsterdam
Arrived on a foggy morning ,still able to see the very tidy fields and farms at the end of the runway ,love the “order” that is Holland .Not long to taxi in to our Hotel, Bilderberg Garden, chosen to be in a lovely part of the city, leafy and near to huge Parks and gardens, Museums and very residential, everything is here and its not teaming with many..The Hotel, well not quite what the pictures portrayed, but spacious, with all we need ,quite a wait for our room as they were fully booked last night, its small ,just 3 floors. Wilted badly by room time, but rallied and sorted lots. Later walked on a warm ,sunny day to Vondel Park ,through the neighbourhoods of little cafes, shops, and bridges with flowers in pots ,across the water ways, and MANY bicycles ,the cycle lanes run adjacent to the roads ,beside the footpaths ,and the cyclists are at speed, strong, healthy people are the Dutch, bikes of every shape and creed with various attachments, most are very ordinary, no gears ,or fancy big tyres here ,this is tradition..some have large, varnished, attached ,small coffin like boxes for the children ,often more than one…its dangerous ,they go so fast and come from all angles, one has to be very alert.!
The Park is huge and we covered a small corner with a tranquil lake , birds, geese with families, and many doggies ,space to run with ears flying…Beautiful trees, so green and lush in the spring, surrounded by very old beautiful, brick mansions, so we detoured back into the neighbourhood of these huge homes, with the high hooks to lift to upper floors, built from the 1600’s til the 1800’s and more, the gardens are so pretty just now, and its unique and lovely… They have tried to restore bees to the city, as they decline in the world, spray not happening ,wild flowers planted and things left a little unattended looking ,now the flowers are past, but now there are 61 different species of the bees, doing very well ,it has worked so well..
We had organic juices and healthy veggies chips and things ,as we strolled along…Much more to enjoy tomorrow, and weary we are now…
How exciting to have a link to Junes new BLOG, exciting for me to be a follower on their journey..
Thursday..Dinner last evening outdoors in a nice setting ,accompanied by a CAT ,a resident of the area, he comes in for attention, a Black and White number, rather lean, and so friendly…but woke from his rest on a nice chair, at the smell of a tray of Prochetta ..delivered to the next table, and…hopped up for a sample…the guests just smiled and assisted him down, regulars I think…! We had a burger configuration with Truffle mayonnaise ,and asparagus ,delectable crunchy potatoes…beautiful. Our Hotel small that it is has a famous restaurant, with a Michelin Star chef ,Stefan van Sprang…we will try that at some stage…Later we thought a quick walk around the block , which of course resulted in much more it’s so ,so pretty, you just want to go on.. and a warm evening brought out lots of cyclists …large park like green spaces ,all down the centre of the roads ,with statues of various kinds ,everyone out at the Cafes, StreetSide… found a small supermarket for water and strawberries… so almost dark when we came back..! Much sleep needed and so we had many hours…!
This morning, breakfast here ,with different and nice things like a soft yoghurt like “ fruit cheese”, boiled eggs as in all Dutch Breakfasts, beautiful brown bread, cold meats ,cheese and much more and then the usual breakfast things we have..
Off on a mission for a Bank, humm, Bank said a resident shopkeeper, no Banks are a thing of the past around here.. internet is the way, so a tiny money machine, in a little leafy square, sticky and ants about, gave us what we wanted from our Travel Card…it all worked like magic…always in another language is interesting…! Then rain began, so we came back for umbrellas our destination The Museum Square, we walked for a distance everything interesting and different ,Café at the Opera House for re positioning, Sam is learning mode on the Maps on Phone, phew they have been a challenge for the older user..but the Children on reception have advice…!! The Museums are many and amazing, long cues and some only available on line, so we saw Van Gough, with a changing video, from the outside and some I rather liked..then Banksie has a little one which is special, I rather liked his statues and things..
Over a large expanse the Rijksmuseum ,huge and amazing , one of the most outstanding , we were able to walk under that, into the narrow back streets of Old Amsterdam…most I loved the gardens, around Rijks , not huge but maze like in parts, some huge trees, reflection pond, and beautiful Busts in the Hornbeam hedges, a fountain that people stood in, the centre of whilst it displayed…All food for the soul and much of it…Thunder clouds gathering , so we came back a different way ,just followed our instincts…quicker and better than Google maps, though we had a quick check at one stage…..3 Hours solid walking ,and we do like Amsterdam..Læs mere

Amsterdam...continued

Yesterday ended well, as we went “out” for our tea ,to our little shops and square close by ,discovered the best Deli, ever, with selections of simply everything you could imagine ,chose several salads, quiche, goats cheese and spinach and tomato, so creamy and tasty ,soft cheese and beautiful little biscuits and a berry fruit salad..The coleslaw like mix, had figs and apple, the green bean, celery and tomato, had tiny beans and chick peas ,onion and snowpeas.and there were more…,all so crisp and with different dressings ,some so creamy… The berry fruit salad had, Strawberries, Blackberries ,Grapes, Red currants ,Raspberries and Blueberries ,it looked and tasted divine… So we set up our table, bathmat for table cloth , and had a feast with spoons only, but you manage..! We have a nice Bay Window part, with two large comfy chairs in afternoon light ,the mornings in here are very dim, lighting not suited to the more senior eyes...!
Very tired and needing to sleep far too early, so consequently we are up before 5am…never mind that will settle I was thinking we had done so well, sleeping well when required…
Not the best idea, as awake before 4am…Off out this morning to Vodofone to rectify the phone problems ,done in an instant, but…even he wasn’t sure ,so now some stuff works anyway ,but I wont need it on board… Quite a hike which brought us many nice things to enjoy, and we walked for 3 hours ,right into the fringes of the inner city .What was good was a most wonderful Market ,went for many blocks ,all closed off specially. Fruits ad Veg ,fish, all things Dutch, like waffles, and then clothing , simply everything, all tidy and orderly as it would be in Holland. There were fabrics… of all kinds, and some quite amazing ones, lovely to think they still sew here. Lots of stunning furnishing fabrics, much to enjoy.
As we explore we realise we are in a perfect spot here, not at all busy..
Excellent meal last evening ,here at the Hotel..but it rained and became colder, so we didn’t go out for the evening walk. Prinsendam today, so exciting to be sailing away this evening, 1pm check in ,so plenty of time to get organised ,and check out by 12. The staff of this Hotel are simply the nicest of people.
Dawn we hope you are not frozen, Middlemarch in the news ,and we saw this morning the Poolburn School pictures and read the article…Brrr ,but the Brass Monkey’s will be happy..or pretend to be.!
I know notifications are not regular on Find Penguins, sorry but they only notify you once in 3 days, so as not to clutter your in-box…so when you go in you will find more than one post ,often. I so love that you are all there ,its like a warm gathering of friends and Family…Bye from Amsterdam, which we have loved .
Saw a very thought provoking , sad ,but good movie, The Glass Castle, and there is a book by Jeannette Walls, which may be even better .It is based on her true story.Læs mere

Prinsendam,and Sailing Away to Hamburg

On Board Prinsendam..
An orderly departure and check in ,for HAL, ever efficient ,and on board by 1pm,our cabin is very well planned, and the large walk in wardrobe a great asset, tons of space for my ample belongings..! Nice bathroom, refurbished and very functional ,it is an older ship, so a little wear creeping in, but we knew that, it’s a very “easy ship” only 835 passengers and is full. Everything easily accessible. A light lunch and later a welcome function for returning passengers, meeting with the Officers, and a nice bunch they are .It is a different atmosphere to other ships ,this is a voyage of exploration, rather than come along for the food and glamourous occasions of formality. One of the Officers, Dutch, regaled his recent trip to NZ, walked Milford track, the Routeburn and on to The Rail Trail, so he knew our region well, and had lots of tales to tell.. and questions to ask us…all very friendly. Our captain is a tall middle aged Norwegian chap, Dag, chats away, at times ,[ some you never hear a word from…] and was very forceful and insistent during our drill ,instilling much confidence .Our fellow passengers are, in the main ,US residents, older and quaint souls, in their best denim , they have had from younger days, and hairstyles to match ,we have some Dutch, very concise and to the point folk, and met a nice couple from Lincoln, Ch Ch, who we had lengthy chats to last night at dinner… Its interesting getting to know the US physic again, a whole new world ..Our neighbours approached ,I greeted them warmly, but just asked for a spare Bible, they needed two.
Sail away down the North Sea channel was so very interesting, and just loved everything we saw, and there was so much, a commentary ,that was so very informative ,by a woman with a very pleasant voice, and ease of manner, so that bodes well for the days ahead. The channel is through residential and industrial areas. Huge and clever modern designs, allotments amongst the apartments ,nothing high rise it seems, except the occasional one that stands out. Further down the ship yards, with much more to see, in huge craft for various purposes , Floating large Hotel ,an amazingly huge Wind Carrier, for the many wind farms and individual wind generators , dotted beside the channel , we came so close to so many, just meters away, in the evening silence ,so quiet we could hear people talking to their dogs, on their evening walks on shore ,it was interesting to dispel the myth that they make a noise ,they are whisper quiet, and noted no piles of dead birds around either.! Road tunnels under the channel now days ,it was begun in the 18oo’s.Many swans, white and graceful ,and then the Farms, all so neat and tidy ,crops ,and cycle tracks dot the land, and are used constantly. Strong people as a result ,the average Dutch man is 184 cm tall and women 170cm, just so as you know that.! We passed through Zandam, which originated in the 1600’s. Claude Monet resided there ,for a time ,and painted some famous works. It was misty, and cool, but we watched until we reached the locks to the North sea, had to have our fog horn going for hours. It was beautiful and so lovely to see. The Chanel is only about 300mtrs wide but brings shipping right to the centre of Amsterdam, a feat of engineering.
Today a journey of 80ks up the Elbe river to Hamburg, a distant shore to begin with, then towns, and pretty homes ,and more industry nearer to the city, warm but cloudy .Air Bus has a huge complex on the river, which is the design and ingenuity centre for all Planes ,interesting, we thought it was in France, many aircraft and a huge runway. Later a city tour of 4 hours, with time to walk to things included, at first an ugly place , plain brick buildings, built post war, canals ,and many places have huge “Water Doors”, from times past and still required ,it seems flooding is a real danger here ,from the Nth sea, even this distance up river ,sometimes large parts of the city have been inundated. It is below sea level. St Michaels Church, a survivor of the war, is huge and has impressive statues, wooden spire of a great height .The city centre and city hall are much nicer, and a man made ,very large lake, completes the picture of a pretty inner city. I thought it would be older and chocolate box looking, but no not much left after the bombing .We had drinks and pastries on the shore ,under beautiful trees ,before an extensive look around. A delightful young man for our guide, who told it as it is good and bad. This is a very Turkish place they came to work here , and are a large part of Hamburg, but divided religion wise. He said we do not say we lost the War, we say we were liberated from the Nazis, they damaged our society unbelievably, and so a different way of thinking of how it was, in terrible times.
Its sunny and warm and we are here for another day, trips to Berlin for some.
We will explore more tomorrow. Settled now, very comfortable and relaxing.. Bye from GermanyLæs mere

Hamburg,Germany, Day 2

Hamburg day 2.
More to remember …Today we set out early to explore on our own, an excellent shuttle provided for us, so we walked in the city for several hours, just taking time to stop and look and see what we missed yesterday. Clean ,modern but touches of the old around too. Sam had some lenses changed and the service was excellent, time taken, extras done, and then NO charge at all, we were amazed , optometry in our land is slightly over the top ,to say the least, so we beamed upon this chap and declared we would think very kindly of him, and we do..! Our second surprise of the day, earlier we had taken cards we received on arrival, worded in a confusing fashion, to the desk, to be told our Travel Agents have paid our onboard gratuities for this trip, overwhelmed really.! A considerable sum…! Some shopping for Sam, beautiful shops, spacious , and sales, helpful assistance ,and would you believe, Dogs come into the shops, so two beautiful Golden Retrievers on level 4 of a gorgeous store.! Coffee, a treat in its self ,my mocha piled with cream, and drizzled with chocolate syrup, 1000 calories in one hit I think, but a treat.!! in a tiny café ,a nice young girl who directed us to look in -depth at the Town Hall, what a breath -taking building, from the 1800’s,one of the most stunning I have seen, immaculately kept ,inside and out, huge and so intricate ,we spent ages ,its huge and dominates the inner city ,in its cobbled square, such a treat.
Its dull and cloudy today and that apparently is normal for Hamburg ,but dry is good.
This is the 3rd busiest Port in Europe ,so it’s a procession of ships coming and going every few minutes, so much to see…. This evening we had a” Beer Feist “ a rousing group of 3, leather pants for the chaps , entertained us with polkas and lots of other jolly music, they were actually good, and we had a huge spread of all traditional food, which was delicious, all gathered on the pool deck. It was cold, so rugs and jackets needed but enjoyable for all.. Tomorrow the Kiel Canal, a wonderful transit that takes from 10am until 8pm,so really through the middle of the countryside ,it will be a great sight.!Læs mere

Kiel Canal Transit

Kiel Canal Transit.
Did not even wake as we left Port this morning ,that shows quiet we are.. Some distance down the Elbe River to the entrance to the Kiel Canal, on a calm and clearing morning. The Kiel Canal was made long ago ,it is a short cut to the Baltic Sea, so saves a lengthy journey around Jutland ,by the open and sometimes rough sea. 460 ks less to travel is a saving. We entered the Locks at Brunsbuttel , earlier than planned ,and beside us two more ships, the system is the Worlds busiest artificial waterway, and is 98 ks in length .The transit to take us all day, and what a day it was, simply amazing to sail right though the centre of Germany, in brilliant sunshine, so quiet we could hear the birds in the trees, all along the way even a Cuckoo calling clearly, at one stage. Pretty light forest for a long way, rugosa roses ,and a cycle trail at the edge .Farmland for most of the journey, so that was lovely. The province of Holstein ,so cows, but not mostly the Black and White ones, beautiful Farms, so green and lush ,no fences ,as that is how Farming is here ,and in Holland, the cows simply do not stray ,there are small ditches ,and some small waterways, but its all so clever, on the cows part…some sheep to begin with, but further in, crops of all kinds, very flat in the main. Storks with huge nests of sticks. Spectacular bridges ,of many kinds some viaduct types for the trains, they have to be high of course, but we have parts that are lowered as well, some looked to be a tight fit… Not many passenger ships transit this canal.
Some yachts alongside us, one with an elderly dog with its lifejacket on…
Only one sizable town all day, very nice homes almost every one had 2 levels ,even smaller ones, and many large gardens, my delight was seeing a “Roving Lawnmower” saw several ,they just roam alone like the Vacuum cleaners we know of, so clever , what a time saver for a large lawn…! Much in the way of reusable energy ,Solar panels on many homes, and the Wind Turbines . The farms have very large Farmhouses, and Barns as well, as the cows will be inside in winter I think .Some thatched houses, and then some very modern, like from Grand Designs… A lot of Glass in the river front ones.
A few Country Inns along the canal, and very basic Campervan Parks, just a mowed strip and one facility, and many modern vans, lots of cyclists ,for the most part, just the cycle trail adjacent to the canal , and a road further back ,just for a short distance ,it was hot…[had to buy a sunhat] and our Balcony was perfect viewing ,I didn’t want to miss a thing ,and we didn’t.. Only 300mtrs wide, and 9mtrs deep so not a huge construction ,but some feat for sure, lots of ships coming from the other direction as well ,places to pass. We came to the locks at Kiel/ Holtenau earlier than planned, so at dinner we watched that process. A simple operation in the going up, both large locks full ,with the ships that began the journey with us… Into the harbour with many yachts enjoying the still ,calm and sunny evening .A beautiful day in the countryside.. Its costs in excess of $25000.00 for a ship to transit this Kiel Canal
Tonight we saw the first Show from our singers and dancers and that was well done. We are now in the Baltic ,on mirror calm seas, sailing towards Tallin, Estonia.
An at Sea Day ,offers much, walked the deck early on, on a sunny morning, then I attended a class on the Photo App in Windows 10, and learnt lots I can do there, in a very short time. Later a Meet The Captain gathering, with the Hotel Director Renee ,whom we have met, so interesting. Our Captain is a down to earth man, grew up in a Fishing Village in Norway , started as a deck hand on ships, and has worked his way to his senior years on Prinsendam ,which he sees as the best of ships, a fine vessel, with a select itinerary ,of highlights, in special places…and it is all of that. Lunch then an Americas Test Kitchen class on Lunch For A Rainy Day ,very nice.. A Windows 10 Class on One Note, later then Dinner and a show, what more could one ask..
Hope all is well at home, and the snow isn’t a problem, Vegas wasn’t impressed, brought to the Antarctic… Poor kitty.!
If you want to see ahead ,before you get your notification, you can click the link Liz mentions, Show Entire Trip, and view it all, I think the notification is the only drawback of a very easy system.Læs mere

Tallinn ,Estonia

Tallinn, Estonia
Beautiful Tallinn, we have visited before, but today was simply gorgeous. Estonia has a Soviet background, but is so alive and doing well, many years on. Well kept, the Old Town is so picturesque , around every corner is something to take your breathe away. It dates from the 14th ,15th and 16th, Century ,with first mentions way back in the 11000’s, in the Churches and history contained within the walls. Like many countries ,Estonia has been involved in conflict in times past, Russia and Germany for a time ,many people left ,but now a population of 440,000 in Tallinn area, so not huge ,by any means. Independence in 1991,finally. Now many visitors, but they retain a lovely manner, and their buildings are kept beautifully .Cobbled streets ,from ancient times .
Their crafts are unique and very classy, and so many different things. Amber is everywhere in this part of the world ,and in the main ,It’s not something I love, but there are some designs that are lovely. They have beautiful knitwear, and textiles of all kinds, linen in all shapes and forms ,and lots of little dolls ,and some big ones ,and very pretty tiles. Many cafes on the streets, with sheepskin on their chairs and warm blankets for the customers, and flower boxes and pots. Their array of food is so tempting.. They do Medieval “Dress Ups”, and I have a great picture…! The trees are huge and beautiful ,one we saw was 350 or more years old ,and has a special person buried beneath ,in trouble, but is coming away again. Some are Linden trees. We had coffee and chocolate to warm, as it was a very cold wind. I bought a hat, knitted ,lined with a light polar fleece, and a fur pom pom, and never took it off…I have plenty of warm clothes, but it looked sunny and nice…but, the wind was not…I shall be aware next time, but the hat I like anyway..!
We walked up to the Old Town, and then for several hours ,reluctant to leave in case something more was missed… A very special day.
A busy cruise port , new and modern , with huge ferries from Scandinavia ,of many kinds ,Viking Sun, which we hope to sail on in the future ,tied beside us, new and very lovely ,Seabourne Breeze ,here as well. A good breeze as we sail towards St Petersburg for 2 days ,from tomorrow. Only to be 14o,so will be prepared with warmer clothes.!
Tonight our singers and dancers had Music from Stage and Screen ,it was simply great ,very professionally done.
I have so many photos, choosing for you will be a challenge, as I can only see the small displays, and it has to be a quick process. Didn’t feel so bad when we talked to Renee ,the Hotel Manager, tonight ,and he said ,been here many times , [worked for HAL for 25 years ] ..said to his wife , no pictures today, then…It’s so stunning you cannot help take them…!. Enjoy..Læs mere

St Petersburg,Russia

St Petersburg ,Russia.
Where to begin ,Russia is a whole different world ,so I was up at 4.15 am just to make sure it was the same way in, through the Old Russian Navy base ,which we pass very close to ,between two small Islands, and then through a very shallow channel ,bracken coloured water ,very shallow ,to the very modern Terminal..I didn’t stay up, I may add… The Terminal is even bigger now, several Berths for the many ships that come, some HUGE ones ,Regal and Sapphire Princess, and today Navigator of The Seas ,today, make us look tiny and that is fine…
Our mission this time was to see The Hermitage ,so many wonders here. For Holland America guests, we were able to make an evening visit , in the day time it is very congested ,with ques for miles ,and you have to keep moving there are so many groups…but for us in the evening, when it is closed to most, we saw it all… The journey in a great treat in its self, seeing the monuments, spires ,and domes glistening with gold ,along the way. Crossing the river Neva, a very large river ,that has its origins in the biggest Lake in Europe, huge bridges that all open during the night, so that shipping comes right to the heart of the city ,where there is still Ship Building going on, almost in the centre..
Our guide Alexander ,was a character ,full of tales and gems to tell us ,slightly down at heel, but seemed to know the Hermitage well… First glance is just jaw dropping, the Gold and the mirrors on the stairs, the beautiful paintings on the ceiling, marble staircases..the rooms are huge, and there is so much to take in, a Palace ,and now an art gallery ,full of the treasures of the world.. Mosaics of the tiniest kind, a huge clock made entirely of tiny pieces, and the Paintings, of every well known person you can think of, the beautiful inlaid wooden floors gold on the walls, that is cleverly reflected by mirrors ,and the chandeliers ,which were once with candles, but now have electricity.. Huge paintings of their military people ,in great halls. Then the china/porcelain, and that is from all over the world…The Amber, their treasure, which is not available now easily anyway ,but more on that later. The views from the windows on the upper floors out to the Neva, are stunning as well, but it is old glass, and double glazed with space between so distorts the picture somewhat.. We had a leisurely wander ,able to see everything in detail with just our ships groups and a privileged few alongside.. Goya and Rembrandt with their own huge displays. I cannot pretend to love some art, and even our guide was able to say, they had good and bad times, and one The Prodigal Son, so renowned, I tried to see beauty but no…not in the eye of this beholder…I took pictures of that which I liked, and there were some, Michael Angelo ,had some treasures, but all food for the soul ,and a great deal of it, we spent hours gazing at it all, and finding more along the way, certainly a most wonderful ,memorable ,experience, amazing to be able to photograph almost everything… It didn’t end there, we came out through the gardens, into a beautiful square, on dusk..saw the Artists display of cats for the Soccer World Cup ,one for each team, cute, then out into the huge square ,with the Obelisk ,gift from Egypt, it is massive reaching into the pale blue night sky with the clouds that look painted ,the scale of it all is so impressive..Looking back on the beautiful Hermitage in the evening light. Quite breath taking…
Waiting for the bus there was a Souvenir shop ,of course, we preferred to be outside with many, by the canals, watching the world go by, and so interesting ,our Alexander had a small contingent join him for a bit of Vodka tasting, and he was last on the bus.!!! Smelling strongly of the tastings..so that made for some amusing stories along the way…!
Parts of the city have older apartments, crumbling and very shoddy, all lived in and apparently by several generations of one Family, Fuel is cheap, aprox 70 cents US a litre. The streets are clean, many green spaces in some parts, and flowers in elevated containers, throughout the city, petunias ,flourishing. Huge dogs, you would not believe how huge…unseen ever before, and do they live in an apartment well yes they do…as that is all there are..! Many new cars of the BMW, Mercedes kind, some of these are raced at speed ,amongst the traffic ,there must be some tragic accidents, possibly been sampling as well.!!! I mean high speed… Many observations in St Petersburg, where over 5 million people reside .Sun shining at 10 pm and light much later of course in this part of the world, very cold during the day, bitter wind ,but calm for us later on. You are not free to roam here ,unless on organised tours, or with a private tour group ,so restricted to a degree. I was unable to get the tour to the Subway and Markets only offered on the 2nd day ,but ,a wonderful first day in Russia..
I need to make two Posts especially for the photos ,so another one later. Scarce internet, and our phones only text from here… Enjoy, Love from us, Faye and SamLæs mere

St Petersburg,Day 2

St Petersburg ,Day 2.
An early start at 7am today for the journey to the South ,to Pushkin, to see Catherine Palace. Our journey was through the city ,and all its sights ,the southern reaches seem more prosperous ,and spacious ,many Parks and flowers, spotless ,being hosed in the early morning with water trucks. Our guide, a tiny girl, called Anastasia, spoke of times past ,a tragic time in the history of mankind really, the Siege of Leningrad was one of history’s most dreadful things, where millions starved, died of the intense cold, in the coldest winter ever recorded, or of illness from all of the above ,they ate grass, leaves from the trees and burnt anything to be warm, we know of this, from the books of Paulina Simmonds ,The Bonze Horseman, and the others which many have been gripped to over time ,and it is good to have some understanding of that that history.
The Palace, residence of the Russian Tsars ,at Pushkin. Catherine and Peter [The Great] had 11 children, she was a Polish servant and they were humble people especially Catherine, who didn’t like grandeur ,and he loved porridge.. however.. the children were different, and the eldest Elizabeth, who had a roundabout way to being in charge, had this palace rebuilt several times. Pushkin is named for Alexander Pushkin a famous poet. It’s a pretty town, leafy and we were one of the first groups to arrive, to a rousing Russian brass band. The day was sparkling ,clear blue, and not so cold, this part of the world has a very poor climate, so we felt fortunate to see it at its best..
Entered this huge place, from one of many of the front entrances, Blue and White ,originally much gold ,on the outside ,but changed to be sensible, it is of course, simply beautiful, its light, streaming in, and much gold, and all the glitters here is gold.! The huge meeting rooms had very large “Stoves”, because you wonder how could they heat a huge place in times past, well these are made of the blue Dutch style tiles, 2 to each room, in some places, and they were the fashion of the times, this was more a home, so the furniture of the Family, their clothes in some cases, Elizabeth is supposed to have had 15,000 dresses… Their writings , beautiful handwriting, Family photos, and the paintings of these fine looking people, no fat emperors here ,the men were very trim…Elizabeth was not .The floors, the original inlaid wood and beautiful designs, it had precious stones , inlaid into furniture, in sapphire blues. The dining room set with their china, in delicate pinks and greens in a room decorated in cameo design in similar pale pinks and greens. The wooden furniture intricate and so beautiful ,in light wood. The frescos or gold parts of cherubs and the like, are of wood from the linden trees, shaped and crafted and covered with the gold leaf.. The Amber room, said to be the 8th Wonder of the World, was stolen by the Germans ,who occupied this palace during the war, but has been painstakingly restored, only completed in 2007, now said to be the 9th Wonder of the World. .No pictures allowed here, in this one room only, everywhere else ibeing so generous ,in pictures. Its huge extravagance but is wonderful to see, it’s been mostly restored ,and the Germans burnt a lot on retreat, and stole the rest. War is so stupid ,then and now…but on it goes…! We thought it more beautiful than the Hermitage ,because much was real, and the Hermitage is of course a Museum, so different. On to the rounds, just more wonder, huge and lots of symmetrical things, in perfect rows, the trees and the little reflection ponds, the Bath houses and the Pavilions, Buxus hedges ,rose beds, not in flower..Then the Lakes with views that were utterly gorgeous ,in a small pavilion with amazing acoustics, a Quintet of young men ,sang a folk song ,that gave you goose bumps, I have never heard such harmony, pitch perfect, I recorded and hopefully have I forever… Time then to walk in the grounds to further corners, of the lakes and wild flower parts, and at the last part before we left the gates, was a man in a long black coat, playing the Flute , Lara’s Theme from Dr Zhivago…What a day…walked past the sculpture of Alexander Pushkin ,who died young, in a dual, and was the naming of the small town this all began in.
On our journey back through an ordinary Motor way, we saw not such a pretty part of the city ,BUT, when we were almost here, we detoured and were suddenly right beside “The Bronze Horseman,” my favourite thing in St Petersburg, we went around him completely , he is huge, and I could not believe I had been able to see him once more ,he is unforgettable, and from the Book. he means so much…remembering it all… Someone smiled upon me today, so very special.!
I cannot remember it all of course, but when I read the book, which this becomes, it will remind of all and more ,that we have learnt along the way.
Tonight an Abba Tribute ,we all enjoyed, such full and great days ,sailing away in a calm evening ,into the Bay of Finland.Læs mere

Helsinki Finland

Helsinki, Finland and Beyond..
From early morning ,still and so perfect, in the brilliant sunshine, we silently sailed in,a stone’s throw from the tiny Islands of the archipelago around Helsinki ,swans along the shore,[their national bird] through a tiny opening, that was a fort in times past, into the inner harbour.
A hazard here, are the sea gulls, and having my breakfast banana, a fluttering of wings ,almost in my face, in he came looking for a bite.. !!!Last time here ,a cunning one swept in while we were having gourmet sandwiches in the beautiful park ,and whipped it from Sam’s hand a flew off…we were quite indignant.! So reminded hastily, these are the clever ones, of the Baltic.!
Some places stretch your mind and some your hearts, and that has been Finland today ,a trip to a Country Home ,our choice with Porvoo , the 2nd oldest village in Finland .What helped to make our day was our guide Corra ,who was an older person, who was SO informative and delightful. She looked like some of the Wast Family as well…
The Finnish language is unique, comes from Hungarian origins, nomadic tribes came North, and settled long, long ago, understanding them somewhat, are the Estonians, across the water. They are not Germanic or Russian, at all. They have overcome enormous odds in war, to remain as they are ,and have had to be innovative and courageous to survive. Russia ruled for a time ,and did do some good things like the Rail links, but when they insisted the children learn to speak Russian they said NO, goodbye. Hard won battles by a small nation, who lost so many men to war, has made them strong. They have so many sensible laws, Education is vital , and many things in place to teach young ones to strive, and really that has to be the most important part of a country. Medical care is almost free, Drs visits are, and Hospital care a flat rate of about $40. Waiting lists for only non essentials ,like cataracts or veins, and then its not more than 3 months.. Pensions are 60% of your earnings ,and Taxes 29%,considered high, but pays for such a lot. 9 months maternity leave ,and that can be shared by both parents, almost all Mothers have a good job, and child ,care is free in the main .There is a Baby Box for every baby born in the country, with everything a baby needs and the box can be used as a bed, but not often now, but from the war days it is on going.
Drink driving is 0.5 % tolerance, and today, Sunday, way out in the country ,there was a checkpoint, and they get the night beforer’s.. Our bus fitted with a device, strictly enforced, a breathalyser, that it wont allow it to start, if there is any alcohol recorded at all, the driver told me that this is not a nation wide requirement ,but many towns and villages ,where children are transported ,require this to be so.. 6mths Military training for all males of 19 years.
This is a land of sensibility, it seems, and no nonsense at all…!
All this and I may have lost you already ,before we begin the actual outing…
Off through a coastal part of the city, many boats along the smooth rocky shore ,of Helsinki ,out through Parklands with Lakes that are skated and skied upon in the long dark winter, this is also the home of Ice Breakers, built here ,because for a start they are the only Baltic country that all its harbours freeze ,so needed, and they supply other countries as well. Ship building is a main stay ,as is a paper industry, in the land of many trees. Clever technology in the propulsion systems of all ships originates here ,and other technology as well.
Out into the real Finland ,where 68% is water, so its silver birch forests with ferns beneath, and blue lupines along the highway, the enemy of their DOC as well…and small Lakes and water everywhere. All flat land is utilised for crops, of barley ,rye ,rice and legumes ,subsidised by the government. Animals do not feature ,they have wild Elk, Brown Bears and wolves in the north and Lynx as well .
The home we visited was of many generations ,managed by a far seeing wife and grown to be a conference centre and retreat ,originated in the 1600’s and added to in the 1800’s and 1900’s, so bigger than most Finland homes, which are small ,to enable them to be heated for 9mths of the year . They say they see other countries with large homes and think, are you mad..!
Welcomed into their living rooms, amongst the Family treasures, and the Art of Finland ,some quite precious ,along with the Families baby shoes ,bronzed and kept. Mangus the son ,was the host, Mum in the kitchen ,quite a glamorous Mum, an up market lady very friendly,.Mangus telling us of the history and traditions of times past and heating stoves etc. Mum saying get on to the coffee and cake ,which we did, very tasty, and enjoyed in the sunroom over looking the lake below. They now make jams ,and fruit cocktails of interesting mixes of natural fruits, and berries, to sell. The Lake is for fishing.[ Almost every Family has a Summer house near or on the water.]
Such a beautiful setting and such a treasure to see ,on a warm and lovely day. Small garden of Peony’s, Alchemilla Mollis ,and Sedums, exactly what we grow..
I cannot remember it all , so much today .I now believe some things are in the genes.., Family traits.! Sam’s Grt Grandfather ,Abraham Wast, came to the other end of the earth ,from Bergo in Finland ,in the 1800’s,he educated his children well, in a time that was not considered necessary, especially for girls, who went on to be Dux at their College in the North Island.. A clever Family resulted.. I felt sad he never saw his home and Family again ,when Fins are so very Family orientated, and fiercely patriotic .
Visiting Porvoo, a beautiful, ancient village ,so precious with its cobbled streets ,original houses, now selling gorgeous things as small shops ,much left from times of long ,long ago, they kept their cemeteries beautifully ,amongst glades of birches , and I understood the remaining relations wanting Abraham to have a memorial ,and that he now has, at the other end of the world.
We had time to enjoy Porvoo, wander along the tidal river that was a busy Port in times past ,to see the little things, that matter, learning what Finland is about ,we understand so much more, and our group all enjoyed the day greatly. It seems this is a well run Country, with innovative systems in place.
On return to Helsinki we had time to walk , it is an up-market city, with quality everything…Large harbour front market, seeing all the fruits and tasty things on offer, we had some, and once again robbery attempted by gulls…!!! Drinks and coffee on the harbour edge, and back for the sun, as we sailed..
You will have tired of this ,but felt it important to recall, and there was so much to learn.. Wish you could all come ,it is so beautiful, and different from anywhere else. The sail away was equally as beautiful as the arrival, many people lining the harbour walls, of the outer Islands. We are sailing to Turku ,in Finland, the former capitol and oldest city.
A little joke from today..A couple from Finland ,celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary, wife cooking dinner in the kitchen…crying, the husband hearing this, goes and says why on earth are you crying.? Well we have been married 30 years, and you have not said you loved me , once ,all day. I told you I loved you 30 years ago, he said, and if I changed my mind ,I would let you know.!!!
This was in the explanation of how the minds of people from Finland work… We all laughed a lot.! They do NOT do small talk…!Læs mere

Turku, Finland

Turku ,Finland
A 5 hour journey from the open sea to reach Turku, amongst many tiny Islands that is a huge archipelago. The Port is large, but the part we came to not so much and just nearby is the countryside, so pretty. Ships are built here and some very large ones ,of recent times ,like Oasis Of the Seas..
Only a short time here , so we were off early, on the shuttle, to this the oldest city in Finland, a Castle from ancient times, and these buildings are so ,so sturdy ,climate wise this needs to be ,and I think such functional people, don’t do anything frivolous ,so strong and huge to last forever in times past..
The older part of what is now an extended city ,was very pretty ,and along the river with its beautiful trees ,we were early ,so not at all busy, and we made our way to the very huge Cathedral on the hill, so strong and tall, with its wooden top and spire. Beautifully positioned, looking down on the city, inside it is massive, almost unadorned though, as are these Lutheran ,and it is not their way ,the structure was hard to believe, some small stained glass windows ,where a special Catherine was in her crypt, and the biggest organ ever, which in such a space would be amazing, a nice part for the children to play. Hard to imagine how such a structure could be built long ago.
Cobbled streets, around the other parts of the older buildings ,little courtyards with wrought iron porches over the doors, some crafts, they make the rag rugs, and lots of wool for knitting and looms around, the lengthy darkness of winter would have to be filled. It’s quite old fashioned, crafts, knitting patterns even lacy looking, pots for plants made from the Birch Bark. We investigated it all and in the Park a little red squirrel ,busy up a tree ,such a teat, so very cute..! Ancient buildings painted in interesting shades , some now are cafes and the like. Impressive statues, a lovely wander
Later we went to find a supermarket for Laundry supplies, always an adventure in a foreign land , where you cannot read the labels, but stumbled across a pack of Sard looking soap, and took the advice of a young assistant, they speak English and yes had the right thing…hand washing, our laundry is included but…have to be selective…[later to discover it is the most huge cake of soap every made, [we thought 3 in a pack..but its super sudsy..!]
On then coffee, very good here, and onward futher, for a Hat /cap for Sam, had to have one from Finland, and that was no mean feat. As in cold places [today was anything but, hot in fact] shops from the outside are not very recognisable, so through double doors you need to investigate ,that we did, and met lovely people and had perfect coffee. Onward through the flower market, they love the flowers ,in such a short summer, everyone has baskets ,and all kinds around, as many as possible, so its very bright and beautiful seeing them all together.. The fashions are not our kind of things ,but pretty scarves and accessories to be had.. Finally found the hat ,in a very hidden but wonderful food market ,and café building ,looking almost disused from the outside…!
Time to return for our early departure ,you discover such a lot on foot, but unfortunately don’t know the details ,in a different language… we have nice thoughts of Turku, our sail away was through the Islands ,and many lovely homes along the way, to the outer Islands, where almost every one had a Summer house and little jetty ,further out were fish farms , just a few on our way, we saw the most gigantic fillets of salmon today, enormous, I suppose the cold waters help them to grow, but really would not be keen on such a size..
Today is a special day for our ship , Prinsendam is 30 years old ,on this day 30 years ago, she sailed on her maiden voyage ,from this Port of Turku. At 5pm we came from our cabins, to the hallways to meet with our neighbours,[Our next door, did not attend] many others did…the Officers and Captain came through and we had champagne, a beautiful cake has been made . Nice to be part of history ,she is a specially lovely ship, taking us to amazing places ,and for that we are so thankful.
Bye from us heading for Sweden.Læs mere

Stockholm.Sweden

Stockholm ,Sweden.
Early rising as there is a tiny gap in this huge archipelago of over 25,000 Islands ,and I was just in time for the Fort, and the way through. So many homes on these Islands ,they are the suburbs of the city really, further in, but the outer ones are the very pretty summer houses, in the dark red with white trim ,that is the tradition. Cooler day though to be 21o ,on arrival our Captain, like our Father, came on and said it is very cold ,just 14o,there is a cold wind ,and you need your jumpers and your jackets today…! How kind…
A blue line to follow from the berth all the way into the city today, didn’t seem that far, but it was, and there were major works happening, harbour side and simply everywhere in Stockholm ,a huge motorway bridge being torn to pieces we had to walk under…and then all along the harbour as well, cannot imagine what they are doing, but it’s a noisy summer here ,with so many buildings also under repair ,even the huge Palace is partly covered ,and undergoing something. The Royal Family are right in the city, on the Harbour ,The Changing of the Guard happening ,so we saw that, and the Old city we detoured through ,seemed intact.! Felt sorry for those who had not seen it before ,as it’s a beautiful Harbourside city, with lovely mellow coloured buildings, and grand things on a great scale. Further on, I recalled a lovely pedestrian area ,with seating and interesting things to see ,so we found that, but it all seemed bigger today, I guess that’s sign of age, the distances seemed further..!
Had delicious very large coffee, and a Wheat ,Hickory Bagel with Balsamic onions, chicken ,ham and rocket, light and lovely. Their food is so well presented and such an array. Friendly folk ,young people strong , tall and good looking..are we shrinking as a race…hummm I wonder…?? Hopefully not..! The only awful thing are the tattoos that mar their lovely, perfect bodies….! Many of them..
More workings and buildings happening in the inner city ,but we moved on to see so much that was classy ,in their little galleries. I liked the bright designs on the trays. We walked back across the river ,through the Houses of Parliament ,huge arches ,and decorations of all kinds ,from long ago.
Their shop windows are a delight of little collections, back in the Old Town,we walked the cobbles, for a long way, to see the narrow, tiny alleys ,some you can touch the sides from one to the other, these run off the main street ,filled with pretty things and lots of Cafes..curving through to a pretty square where we could see our ship in the distance,…A sit for orange juice ,then the trek back ,through the construction site…and along the Harbour where the Viking Ferries are ready to roll on their traffic ,and sail away, very large ships.
Later, as we are on the pretty Harbour side ,we had a procession of the Swedish Navy, at least 10 ships of varying size, 2 of a very new looking design, came into the Harbour and are now moored right in the city. We see a lot of Military Might in the Baltic, submarines ,and various others, in every Port and at sea, I tend to think that Navy’s may be redundant in wars of today, all over I no time with accurate air strikes, but ,perhaps not, they are certainly all ready anyway..!
Walked for 4 hours today, and the hip will be either make or break, and so far its making it well, maybe I should not even say that.! Then walked up the 88 stairs we have from the gangway ,to our cabin..[Sam counted them early on]! Will be able to have desert tonight.! Our food is very good with so many choices. The sail away will be gorgeous in the evening light.. Two large vessels already passed ,there has to be a line up for the narrow parts, so its many in order…
We had a great show last night the music of Billy Joel and Elton John ,almost better than the real thing, so talented..
Our sail -away was spectacular, positioned in the Crows nest, it gave a great sense of perspective ,to how narrow the waterways actually are, so with nice “sipping’s”, we sat for sometime ,enjoying it all. Some of the Royal residences ,in pretty places along the way , and the most huge copper beaches ,in all their splendour. It is noticeably dry, as is all this part of Europe, with no rain ,of any consequence, for over a month. Right to the pilot station ,there are still little summer houses on tiny rocky Islets..
Off to Gotland tomorrow Visby ,a small, pretty place in the Baltic.Læs mere

Visby ,Sweden

Visby, Gotland.
Our call today was at Visby, a pretty walled medieval town, on the Island of Gotland . Gotland belongs to Sweden, and over time has belonged to others Germany and Denmark. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site .It has a complete “Ring Wall” for defence in times of old ,and parts here relate to the Stone Age.
Several ruins of churches from the 12th and 13th Century, one pertaining to King Olaf, is in their Botanical Gardens ,not much remaining, but ivy covered and still an alter intact. Attractive gardens, with many different Salvia ,and the roses that are part of Visby. Higher up, many steps, other more majestic ones with little gardens and statues ,and a huge cathedral that is more recent, they have the wooden spire top parts ,unique to this part of the world.
We walked the outer walls along the sea front, calm ,cloudy ,few spots of rain ,but pleasant .Had a nice encounter with a friendly man and his huge St Bernard ,who was extra friendly, and when we patted him, he became all silly and excited ,and barked this enormous bark.! We do like the dogs , there are lots of the “Sausage Dogs”, around these parts…don’t seem so friendly, German like I think, with a gruff exterior, perhaps..
Cobbled streets ,tiny cottages ,and so ancient and pretty, most just the two windows and the door, but everyone had Roses, of every kind, their perfume filled in the air . Many known to us, and some great specimens of the David Austin’s ,but mainly the older kinds, grown over a long time, valerian ,and other things we knew as well, saw a large and gorgeous Handkerchief Tree, had not seen one completely in bloom . A lovely place with many streets to explore ,and we had time to see ,we think, it all. Once again very dry, and unsure that water would be readily available to use for gardens. Islands often have limits. Coffee in a local Café, some interesting inhabitants live here…
They have many wool crafts, because they have these special ,very woolly, grey sheep, large horned variety, and they have curly coats. So unusual. I need to research them, but it is what they are known for. It is summer holidays so it seemed to be very quiet ,but for us and the passengers from The Marco Polo, a British charter, cruise ship ,that was very old and had few of the nicety’s of cruising it seemed ,but a jolly band, enjoying themselves. Visited the museum and walked extensively ,from everywhere, great views to the sea ,over the rooftops. An easy day for us today…Læs mere

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen
A happy day today in Copenhagen, the best berth we could have ,as close to everything as we could be.
Hop on Bus at the Quay ,charged to our ship, so a speedy process ,in efficient Danish style.
We didn’t love Denmark in the past ,found it unfriendly, and things didn’t work so well..Today was great, we saw lovely places, and met nice people.
Able to view all the main sites, and decide what we liked ,as you cannot see them all of course .We chose Nyhaven first, it is an area of brightly painted houses ,on canals with all the old boats ,traditional craft, some being restored ,but a lot used for charters. A nation of Islands, so the seas is a large part of life here. Canal side cafes ,all different and attractive. We explored it all ,of great interest to Sam ,and moved on for coffee, the Danes are good at coffee, average 4 cups a day…but no mocha, however they gave it a go, and very good it was..
Bikes to the fore here, very much so, and such innovative add ons for them ,children transported in many ways .You do need to be very careful ,as bikes have their separate track, and then a footpath, they go at great speed..!
Such a strong , attractively built city, is Copenhagen, the new matches the old ,a lot, then they have huge and outstanding new creations. In need of rain ,like everyone around of course. We did the whole circuit, and then I decided on the Palace I needed to see, and it was walkable, so we set off along the waterfront ,wide walkways, waterways and stunning statues ,the prettiest part. The little Mermaid was absent last time, being re bronzed, so today she was along the way ,she is small, but very lovely ,and really sort of is Copenhagen..
The birds here are huge…[like the people, another tall strong race, ] but even the sea gulls, I said is that real, it was, but the biggest ever..Swans, so huge with many cygnets ,so gorgeous, hissing at Asian visitors who were far too close. They beat a hasty retreat!
Onward to the Palace , Amalienborg. I am very interested in this Royal Family ,Margarethe ,the Queen, is a very clever woman, speaks many languages ,and is a talented artist as well, they are much loved by their nation ,supported by 85% of the people ,in a country that is very far thinking, it is apparently unusual .Then of course there are Mary and Fredrick and the children.[ Plus another brother and his Family] .The Palace is HUGE, it is a wide semicircle, immaculate , changing of the guard ,all very regal ,and seeing the Balcony we often see them on, the courtyard where Mary biked the children to school, in their little cart, like all the Parents in Denmark .I loved it all, and wondered what Mary thought when she came from Tasmania, must have been rather over whelmed.. it is the biggest Palace I have ever seen.! She is very much to the fore, speaks the language, and perfect for the part it seems.. It is near the water, with gardens across the road, on the waterfront.
We had a traditional Danish Hot Dog, harbourside ,not as we know it, a great tradition here, not a frankfurter in a bun..All nicely cooked ,large sausage type, cut and browned, flat wider bun ,toasted, pesto, chilli, sausage ,onions ,pickles ,tomatoes, rocket, mayo, gherkins, ketchup and cheese…! Made by lovely young people, who enquired of our origins ,and had never met people from NZ. This all took sometime ,so we had nice chats ,after we ate, I went back and said how good it was, and how it is the little things you recall, that make a place special..We also met a young sailor ,from a beautiful Tall Ship, just nearby ,been in Spain and far places ,it was named simply, Danmark, he was interesting and friendly, and they sailed off again, majestically, before us, to more interesting places in the world. A training vessels for sailors.
We had a line of pretty shops adjacent to our berth today so nice to wander and look at local things. We sailed at 4.30 with Hot dogs on deck and Danish beer ,a far cry from our lunch ,but many seemed to enjoy.. Good to meet fellow NZ’ ders ,they are getting off in a day though..
Our show tonight was very professional and the talent of our singers as good as any ,singing the well loved classics.
It is blowing tonight, we have been with a good view of the Coast of Sweden for a long time ,the most movement since we began.. Its fine, and need to rest after a very full and good day in Denmark.Læs mere

Amsterdam and Sea Day

Amsterdam and Sea day.
Yesterday was turn around day for Prinsendam , so a large group that had been on board since Ft Lauderdale left, and we have a very full ship this time around.
The day in Amsterdam meant a move for us to a new cabin, just down the hall, so an easy task ,with great help and all done in no time… not much has changed of course, it seemed not so quiet, but is working out just fine..still our same very special young men looking after us ,we like them lots.
We walked to the city, about 20 mins walk, along past where all the River Boat Cruises ,leave from, they are huge, compared to what we went on years ago..many different lines, all ready and waiting.. The city, well very happy we chose the part we did, to stay in, the centre is so ,so, busy ,even in the morning, and not that clean to be honest, a couple of pretty canal views ,and a Barrel Organ, reminding that this is really Holland, but a lengthy walk, and not inspired…traffic is dangerous, scooters use the bike lanes and its all very fast, the buses at great speed… They are wanting to find a way not to allow so many people to visit Amsterdam, unsure of how that could work..
However on a sunny afternoon we left on the journey to the open sea, and this time earlier, warmer ,and better views inland, seeing more of the countryside, the cows ,in their fenceless fields, and the Locks at Ijmuiden ,as we came out to the North Sea. Very calm and it’s light so late of course, and more so as we proceed North.
Perfect day today for our day at sea, lots to do on board, so we were off to the Crows Nest, lots of gannet’s above, then Americas Test Kitchen, for Salmon 2 ways, all very nice ,and entertaining, as the fellow guests stumble in and out ,some arriving as Sam said, in time for the applause at the end..! First day, they will settle…hopefully.. Several Microsoft Windows 10 classes, I find very good. Talks on Ports ahead ,Floral arrangements, Bridge, and much more, to entertain
Tonight the Captains welcome, and of course this is his Birthplace, so very enthusiastic about taking us “home”. He reads us his little poems of wisdom each day, may have said , but it’s such a nice touch. Weather to be not good for 2 days, and then better, we have been to the first 2 places, but disappointing for others ,if it rains..and it does in Norway… 4 new Ports ahead for us, and glowing reports on what we will see ,as we venture right to the very top and then some, of Norway, to the Borders with Russia and Finland.
More tomorrow, so pleased you have warmed up, and love to hear you are reading. Bye from us heading to Alesund.Læs mere

Alesund,Norway

Alesund , Norway.
Today we returned to Alesund ,with a forecast of not so good weather ahead, but the journey was mirror calm. Very restful ,and good to have a sea day to catch up, its been a very busy time so far.
Arrival through mountains to a lovely harbour, Alesund is a pretty place ,an important fishing harbour ,due to its central location, and the Fjords around are UNESCO World Heritage Sights. It is also an Art Nouveau town, with some older, unique buildings .It had importance during the war for taking people to safety when Germany invaded, they were then able to join the resistance force. Such bravery, and endurance, in small boats .Like Scandinavia in general they preserve their old boats beautifully ,and many still in use for tourism ventures.. It has little streets and lovely sights. We were off early with rain in sight, but just a few light showers during our extensive walking tour,we re visited nice things ,and discovered lots more as well ,and enjoyed it all. Nice to see Fishermen selling their fish at the wharf, some shrimps/prawns ,that looked inviting on one boat and fish on another, people love being able to get fresh fish.. We had coffee in a nice place, friendly people ,which was a gallery for local artists as well.
Found a little Supermarket for a few things, and of great interest of course what is in there ,and how much it all costs, fresh chickens about $4.60, in our equivalent ,here it is Krona, Denmark ,Sweden and Norway are all Krona, BUT woe betide anyone who tries to give one countries currency to another , they act like its poison…!! Good English in them all though ,and that is easy..
Many beautiful Kitchen shops ,with very up market things ,and Thelma they had bowls, very related to our Best Bowl In the World, with a cling on bottom piece, so even better, Sam was appalled when I looked with intent.!! Very tempted, but rather large for transportation..! Nice to have a wee browse…
Off to an older part of the town ,they have such nice statues ,and even heated wrought iron seats, in one viewing spot…[It wasn’t at all cold, just a bit damp] We walked in the older part, along the coast ,clear waters, but not a fish to be seen, large trawlers setting out for sea ,of the modern kind .You will see from the pictures you can have your boat almost at the door, in the inner harbour.
Nice gardens in parts, the lovely Astilbe that we had in times past, so feathery and pretty ,all our plants really ,some tall yellow iris ,so it’s really still their spring ,their season is short. Very large tubs of pansy’s in places ,all makes for a nice show. A good walk of about 4 hours today, an amble rather than a walk at times, but all enjoyable.
Tonight we have had the most delicious fresh cod, pan fried, so very good. Also fresh cherries, not quite our standards, but good as well ,many treats along the way. It’s noticeable colder tonight ,but our cabin is cosy. We are here until 10pm ,as it is a short journey for Geiranger tomorrow ,we don’t go back to the open sea, just through the Fjord and turn left…it’s a beautiful Fjord .
Weather for tomorrow is for SNOW, how exciting…to be 3o…! we won’t have internet, so a double dose today for you. Good to catch up with Family today, we have excellent phone packages, 100 texts, 1GB of data and 100 minutes talking, for $19, it wont work everywhere, but from here on should ,except the next few days in the Arctic circle ,I don’t imagine it would be great. Internet is not.
Happy Birthday Dear Thelma, Bye for us in Alesund.Læs mere

Geiranger,Norway

Geiranger Norway and Sea Day.
Early rising to see the sheer rock walls and the waterfalls, on a bleak day in Geiranger, fresh snow on the tops, very cold and raining. Having visited and enjoyed in brilliant weather, several times in the past , we decided to stay put. Still nice to be in the Crows Nest, [a tender Port] and talk to new people, with a panoramic view of the Fjord around us ,and the buses struggling up the hair-pin road above, and remembering when we climbed a mountain here years ago, one of life’s great achievements.!!
Some journeys were curtailed with roads closed due to snow .Early departure by 2.30 pm and a storm warning from our Captain at that time ,we were told to secure everything ,he has has permission to take the inland, coastal route ,but at 2am must venture out…We are very well placed ,it will be fine.
The waterfalls at their best with extra rain ,as we sailed with a great commentary. The tiny mountain farms still very visible in what seem completely inaccessible places, high above the fjord, grass all around carefully cut, and stored for winter ,as it has always been. Norway once had one of the lowest standard of living in Europe, weather, tiny acreages, and few animals ,made life very tough in many places .This we know from the favourite books of the Red River series ,of those who left for America, an even harsher climate and life in many respects .Now due to oil and gas Norway is now the richest nation with huge reserves ,carefully managed ,for the generations ahead, the Government not allowed to touch more than 4% to do what they need to doin ,a well run nation.
A journey of 3 hours back down the Fjord, much to see along the way, some places can even grow stone fruit, like apricots, but just in sunny spots, and not so many of them, the long daylight helps the growth. A beautiful part of the world..
I am now reading “We Are Going To Pick Potatoes”, Irene Berman, regarding the Holocaust ,which affected Norway so terribly .A need to understand what life was like here during the war, a lot to forgive and not only the Germans..I have to have breaks from it, but I think we owe it to them ,to know their stories and to understand many things.
Near Alesund we took our pilot on, for the Inland route, not for the faint hearted, many rocky shoals ,tiny islands and a strong gale, up to 70 knts at times and 18 ft seas, very close to shore, almost all the time ,I thought these are man of the sea ,our captain grew up in these waters ,and will know every rock..we sailed so well, she is a well built ,and I’m sure very well ballasted for the night ahead..Daylight helps, and I had to be looking often ,still light most of the night ,we are almost in the White Nights regions, where the sun hardly dips below the horizon, and last night was no exception, even in the lashing rain. Seas behind us, so that helped. It was not really at all uncomfortable.
Calmer today ,we still have 500 nmls to go to Honningsvard right at the top of Norway.
We had an invited luncheon today, in the main Dining Room, Indonesian food, and simply delicious, 4 courses ,and the most interesting table mates, Ann and Alan from Vancouver, He had Norwegian/English Grandparents, Ann Finn/Swedish parents. then Oscar, was a Dane emigrated to the US as a child, and his wife from Mexico, and Sam with the Finnish connections, so a great discussion of amazing stories ,about these brave ancestors.
Also today we have our great older commentator ,Norwegian, and a delight, been to one talk and now off to the next one.
Not great pictures really today, waterfalls are like High Seas, never look as good as they are…!!
More from the top of Norway another day.Læs mere

Honningsvag ,Norway

Honningsvag, Norway.
Most cruise itineraries are set in stone and nothing changes ,Prinsendam is not, especially in this part of the world. Late yesterday our Captain Dag announced a change in tack, taking us inland on an 8 hour journey ,through amazing and lovely places. Unfortunately it was misty ,and so not quite what he wanted us to see, but still spectacular at times, it cleared ,mirror calm ,and mountains to behold. Loefoten Islands on one side and the Mainland on the other .So green and inhabited ,in the most isolated places, even if it was just with tiny summer houses .Beautiful water ways ,narrow at times ,sheep farms ,quite a few in one place..One huge bridge which we can lower masts and things to fit under, so this is unique to all but a special few ships..
Our charming ,elderly, commentator Bard, is also an artist, so last evening we had the first of his series of drawings .Very special.
Today Honningsvag ,An Island linked with an undersea tunnel ,this is where you visit the North Cape ,or Nord Cap, in Norwegian ,which I have done…so we chose the King Crab expedition. Not far, but through a 4km tunnel of sheer rock, Norway does tunnels with ease, [would have the Nevis knocked into shape in an instant…] it is used for running/jogging in winter, as they have 3 mtrs of snow here, and of course almost darkness ,so utilise the tunnel for things indoors..
Off for our lesson on King Crabs, brought here by Russia well to nearby Murmansk, and have multiplied terribly and of course eat everything that moves in their ocean ,and spreading of course throughout the land…Caught now and expensive to buy, but still they seem to be regulated in some ways, although further South they are unregulated, to try to stop them, we said you won’t, and they know that…bad really.. Anyway a pretty place on the shore with the Sami tents for the cooking . We saw the process ,and our nice young guide was expert in the killing.. instantly… and chopping off the legs, they have thousands of eggs ,and a good percentage survive, so good at reproducing. [they are the Alaskan Variety]..cooked for a time ,longer than we would ,and then cooled in the sea water .We sat and ate them, with nice flat bread , mayonnaise, and lemon, sweet and like our crayfish,[different texture] , pretty much ,very good.! .One US lady cried when they were killed…!! We were a very small group .Some of the questions ,felt like being on an outing with 5 year olds, not everyone of course, but so very naïve.. made me proud of our education system.! A little way away were reindeer, such a delight , wild and just grazing along the roadside ,so lovely to see.
Honningsvag is small , just 2500 people ,smells of fish, has big coils of rope decorating the Quay, nothing fancy here ,seeing huge racks of cod drying, outside ,amazed that these take over a year or more, to be cured ,and are sold to Europe, Portugal buys a lot ,and Asia. Avalanche protection is all above the town, and although its not so cold that the harbour freezes, in winter ,the winds make it hard to bear ,wind chill dropping the temperatures dramatically. Houses have small windows of course ,for less heat loss. Dandelions grow huge, [long daylight] and it’s a tough world away up here. Fishing ,a mainstay, and tourism to the tune of 300,000 people in summer… Here today is the COSTA Pacifica ,in excess of 5000 people on board…imagine that…hardly saw any though.!
It was very cold, our faces freezing, so not too long out walking today .Look forward to a spectacular sail out tonight, we saw herds of farmed reindeer this morning ,and cliffs to amaze.
Fog rolled in so we didn’t see much, but so needed to rest, the White Nights, and that is what they are, so bright even at 3am,are not easy, even with good drapes…! Those who went to the North Cape today did see anything so we will try Surday morning, for a sea view, which is by far the best anyway…
Bye from us in far flung places..Læs mere

Kirkenes,Norway

Kirkenes , the top of the world…
Today was such an absolute delight , we both enjoyed it so much.
Seemed an out of the way, unknown place, with not a lot to offer, BUT, it was anything but. Kirkenes is far away from anything, at the top of the world. However this is a fine example of nations simply living side by side ,and making the best of what each other has to share, and that they do. Norway ,Kirkenes belongs to, shares a close border with Russia, and Finland.
Raindrops on the windows as we set out, but it improved ,and we had the most interesting few hours you could imagine. The border with Russia is just minutes from town, and so from years back they shared an electricity plant, on their largest river, that worked, borders not so defined then, someone in power wanted to fight for a border ,no said King Olaf, Russia respects God, so we will build a church and that shall define, and so it did [ Orthodox church] and now of course ,with a war between ,it is much more defined ,but still relaxed and no animosity and they say Oslo, and Moscow can do whatever, but they will live peacefully on…Russia did take Finland soil, and now they are blocked from the Barnet Sea ,a place of wealth of course ,so ongoing as to what may happen there… A brief picture and it is so, so much more.. They suffered terribly with Nazi Germany, who occupied, here and they lived in the mining tunnels ,people died and were born there ,terrible hardship..as Hitler wanted Murmansk ,in 2 weeks ,but that plan failed ,due to storms and bitter cold ,when both sides died of the unseasonal , terrible, cold..then this part of Norway was liberated by Russia in 1944,so they were the first to be saved… From way back then ,they have reason to be thankful to Russia for some things. Like all countries their indigenous peoples have suffered badly, the Sami, who are Fins, Russians and Norwegians have had some rights restored ,but many are not , and they have been ashamed to be what they are, like most countries.. Reindeer out number the people in these parts, but we didn’t see them today..
They have a 200,000 person shelter built underground, after the war, it stands today.
We set out through a town, that is growing with Tourism , Northern Lights and then summer.Russia is here for fishing and repairs of vessels, huge iron ore mining in the past ,has now ended, our destination was Grense Jakobselv ,and Arctic Ocean Beach… 3 Lakes surround the town ,quite large, just named 1,2 and 3 as they have unpronounceable Sami names…pretty countryside ,low birch forest ,so very green with an undergrowth of pretty ferns. Reminiscent of New Found land. Many Inlets, tarns ,and Fjords along the way, and we stopped and walked at the oldest mountain in Norway, said to be 300 million years old..sheer rock and quite amazing to comprehend. Pretty little wildflowers. They have Moose, Bears, Lynx ,Wolverine roaming wild, but the reindeer are all owned. ,and taxed… On towards Grense Jakobselv , on the Barnett Sea ,inhabited until the 60’s but because in winter the road is inaccessible, and people want civilisation ,it slowly waned, there were little farms, fishing in the rivers and sea ,and people managed well . Our bus drivers Mother had come from a Family of 13, the youngest, so he was very good in telling us of their lives, one last Aunt had stayed until 91, and the last permanent resident to leave ,after a winter alone.. but many summer houses are in the area ,just little and small ,and people love to come for hunting [strictly controlled] and fishing .King Olav’s church [1869],is a lovely testament of care, kept pristine and its cemetery around, so interesting ,with Russian, Sami, Norwegian, and Finnish people within. When you die ,you return to the place of your birth, if possible…
The journey out was 45ks, spectacular ,the rugged, mountainous landscape looked almost prehistoric ,probably is,the sheer size of some of the huge boulders, some snow still in shaded places, and then the pretty forest to soften, the rivers, the one that is a border, very shallow and easy to paddle over, but one must not pass the centre, but you can fish…There are border towers to be seen,[both sides] and the border with Russia, is defined by lining up large markers on the hillsides above, plus a fence along the river on the Russian side. As if anyone would have wanted to come in… little own stay.!!! They think they are un manned now. They can easily pass through the border crossings..
The beach on the Barnet Sea, at what seems to be the end of the world, and sort of is, but for Islands, so lovely, calm and many sea birds, we had time to walk and enjoy, a very memorable place. Our guide was special, she didn’t say some of her letters like K’s ,and of course it is translation, and added ss’s ,as in the Reindeers .Very endearing ,we liked her lots, very knowledgeable and informative ,with the driver to add some, it was such a learning curve. Even away up here they still have small farms, summer growth providing what is needed, they have the Gulf Stream, and that helps, still an intense winter, but not complete darkness, 4 hours of low light, but no sun ,I cannot imagine how terrible ,but when It’s your home ,you have lived like that always. Just now NO darkness ,and that is a challenge as well..
From the border near the town of Kirkenes you can cross any time if you are residents in a radius of 30 ks, so they go all the time ,to Russia, and the Russians come every day, to their Kirkenes shops , all very convivial.. we live in peace they said, easily… We loved our day at the end of the world, and so thankful to be able to come ,such a highlight ,and I can never remember everything..
Met very amusing Canadians at drinks, a Historian from Scotland originally, and just such delightful ladies ,they had many tales to tell us .Gillian and Ann, who we look forward to seeing again.. Much Laughter…
Sailing south again now ,with new places to enjoy for several days ahead..Læs mere
