  • Bangkok here we go...

    December 19, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Had a decent bus ride to the hostel, where a short nap was more than necessary 😄
Been strolling around the city for a couple of hours afterwards, realizing that it seems like each street seems to have a main branch of shops there. 🤷🏼‍♀️ after heading down a street full of mechanics and spareparts (unfortunately no engine for me there 🙄) I passed one where the theme obviously was selling all kinds of guns and weapons 🙈
However, enjoyed bird sounds in small park and two temples. And most of all my delicious dinner 🤩

  • Woke up in Bangkok...

    December 20, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

After checking out Khaosan road (THE backpacker area in town) yesterday night 🍻🥳 I woke up later than planned - but hey, I'm on travels, so no need to stress out anyways 🤭
Took me some time to get out bed, since a friend from home called, so I only got on the road in the early afternoon. But again - who cares?! 😆
Walked down to Wat Pho, the most famous temple in Bangkok with its lying Buddha, which is 15m high and 46m long. And what should I say - it was really impressive 🏯 Too bad the pictures can't really capture all those vivid colours and charming details. ✨️

  • Bangkok 3/3

    December 21, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

After packing and doing the checkout of my dorm this morning, I decided to go to the Grand Palace and Wat Arun (another temple) for my last day in Bangkok. 👑🏯
The palace was really stunning, behind every corner there was another magnificent building. Like yesterday at Wat Pho, the colours were breathtaking, even though the palace was a bit posh to be honest. 🤏🏻
For getting to Wat Arun, I took the water taxi, which is very popular to do in Bangkok. The ride only took a couple of minutes, but was pretty fun! 🚤
Wat Arun itself was very impressive as well...different to the other temples but still nice to visit and walk around for a bit.
Headed back to the hostel rather early in order to check everything and get ready for my 10h busride to Chiang Mai this night! 🚌🙈
My résumé about Bangkok: it's been nice to start here and spend a couple of days in town to see all the main sights and wander around a bit. But 3 days is definitely enough for me in this town 🙃

  • Chiang Mai - temples, temples, temples

    December 22, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

The busride to Chiang Mai was actually more pleasant & comfy than expected. There was enough room to properly lay back the seats, and even a footrest was there. Soon after the start I cuddled up in the blanket that was provided, read a few pages of a downloaded book and fell asleep quiet soon. 😴
We arrived shortly before 7a.m. in Chiang Mai, where I wanted to take a typical Songthaew (like a tuk tuk for 6-8 persons) to get to the hostel. But since it took too long to depart (I waited for around 30 mins) I decided to walk to the city center - thanks to my impatience and inability to cope with inefficiency 😅
However, I felt like moving anyways, so I just started walking. With my 20kg backpacks those 50 mins almost felt like a little workout 🏋🏼‍♀️

After refreshing and changing outfit (miahli - just for you!!) at the hostel I once again just started strolling around the city center. Oh boy, how I love just walking around with a rough direction and then accidentially passing by real gems like this enchanted temple you see in pics no. 8&9 🥰🤩
Chiang Mai is way more chilled and less crowded than Bangkok - really nice to be here 😊

  • Holy trinity - food, nature, running 🥰

    December 23, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

This morning I did a Thai cooking class. After going to a local market we drove to the organic farm, where we got some insights on the herbs and veggies that are growing in the garden of the farm 🥭🌶👩🏼‍🌾
Then we finally started cooking - we prepared spring rolls, a curry, a stir fry and a soup 🍲🥣🥡🥟 all of it just tasted delicious, but was so much that I took half of it home with me 😅🤰🏼

For the afternoon I decided to do the monk trail, which starts at the outskirt of Chiang Mai. Really enjoyed hiking a bit and exploring Wat Phra Lat and Wat Anagami, two temples located in the middle of the woods. 🌾🌿
And since the distance to the hostel wasn't too far, I did a nice & relaxing run back into the city center 🥰🏃🏼‍♀️
Since it was saturday, I checked out the famous night market in the evening - such a busy place to be! 😄

  • Chiang Rai - Frohe Thainachten 🎄✨️

    December 24, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

After a relaxing morning at Chiang Mai I took the bus to Chiang Rai in the early afternoon and arrived there at around 6 p.m. 🚌
As usual, I started walking to get familiar with the city and accidentially ran by a church with a cute little "christmas market" - so Frohe Thainachten in Chiang Rai 😆🎄 Checked out the night bazar to grab some food and then went to the flower festival with Sam from the hostel. 🌸🌺🌷 And woah, it's chill up here! That was the coldest moped ride I had since being in Thailand 🥶
However, the festival was quiet nice, even though it almost ended when we arrived 🤷🏼‍♀️🙃

  • Bye Thailand - hello Laos! 🤩

    December 25, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Got up rather early this morning to visit the blue temple in Chiang Rai before heading off to the border of Laos. And it was so worth it! That temple was really cool to see! 🤩🏯
Took the local bus to the border afterwards, which was one of those with natural air condition - since the doors are left open during the ride. 😉 had a nice talk there with a super cute woman - even though we didn't speak each others language at all 😊
Boarder control was easy, also accidentially met Sam at the boarder, which was super fun because we missed each other at the hostel this morning 😄
Finally arrived in Huayxai in the early afternoon and only did some organizational stuff like withdrawing cash (being a millionaire now as 1€ equals 20.000 KIP 😂), checking the slow boat, etc.
And enjoyed the sunset with view at the Mekong River and the Thai side of it - with great 90s music (Cher, Usher, Nelly - all there 🤩😆)! Cheers to that! 🌅🍻

  • Travelling by Slow boat 🛶🐢

    December 27, 2023 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Yesterday and today were two travel days on the slow boat on the Mekong river from Huayxai to Luang Prabang with an overnight stay in Pakbeng. 🛶
I didn't expect too much of the slow boat since you're stuck on the boat for around 7 hours each day. 🐢
But oh wow...it was simply amazing and I enjoyed every single minute of it! 🤩
The first day we had a rather big boat which was only half filled, so almost everyone had two seats to make it comfy and enjoy the ride and the beautiful scenery. I couldn't even read more than 5 pages of my e-book in a row as I've always been captivated by the sorrounding nature of Thailand on the one side of the river and Laos on the other one. 🧭
For the night in Pakbeng I stayed in a - let's call in very rural - room, which was ok for one night, but I was also happy that I didn't have to stay longer 😄 but hey, at least I had the best curry so far in that town, so it was worth it! 🍲

The second day we had a much smaller boat, with pretty much all the seats being occupied. At one point I realized that there was kind of a nice space in the back of the boat, so I decided to move there and enjoy the scenic panorama and the sunshine from the floor in the back, rather than sitting on my soft but shadowy place in the front of the boat. It was way louder because it's been close to the engine, but whatever - just put the earphones on and turn up the music 🎶
This second day was even more beautiful and breathtaking than the first one...I literally spent the whole ride just watching the nature around me...it was magic 🌾🌴🐂 This whole trip felt just like pure freedom and liberty - there's nowhere else I'd rather have been 🥰
Also met some nice people on the boat, who I spent the evening with at the nightmarket in Luang Prabang 🍛🍹

  • Luang Prabang - splish splash 🏞 💦

    December 28, 2023 in Laos ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

For today I had planned to go to the Kuang Si waterfalls with a bunch of people I met yesterday at the night market.
It was such a wonderful trip 🤩 the tuktuk ride up there was freezing 🥶 but a couple of minutes after we arrived, the sun started to make its way out. 😎
We passed a bear sanctuary on the way up 🐻 before getting to the waterfalls. That atmosphere...oh boy, I'm just so in love with Laos 🥰
After a short hike up the waterfall was a swing, which was just too tempting not to get on 😄 the water was nicely cold, just the way I like it - so perfect for a short dip 🐬
In the afternoon I visited the UXO ( museum with Sophie. Super interesing, but also kind of sad to see how many undetected bombs there still are in Laos and what those weapons are still doing to people here.... 😑
Dinner has once again been taken at the night market in very good company from the waterfall trip 🥟🥣🍻

  • Splish splash 2 🚣🏼‍♀️ & Reunion 🥰

    December 29, 2023 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Yesterday Sophie and I spontanously booked a kayaking tour for today, which started at 9 in the morning with an around 1 hour drive to the spot where we finally got into the water. 🚣🏼‍♀️🚣🏼‍♀️
We kayaked down the Nam Ou river for around 2 hours until we did a lunch break at a sandy beach and enjoyed the sun for a bit. 😎
Afterwards we had a refreshing swim in the river, before kayaking to the Pak Ou caves. 🐬
Shortly after I came back to the hostel, there was my special moment of the day - the reunion with Miahliiii 🤩🤩 so good to see her again & spend a couple of days together now 😊
For dinner we went to the famous Obama Coconut 😆

  • Fail day!

    December 30, 2023 in Laos ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Got up rather early this day to watch the monks walking through the streets of Luang Prabang and collecting gifts for the day.
After that, we decided to watch the sunrise on Phou Si Mountain -> first fail of the day as it was super foggy & we didn't see anything 🙈
After having a nice coffee at some pastry at a frech bakery, I went for a little run, which was a really good idea 😍
Chilled a bit in the hostel befoe we went to Garden of Eden, where you can make some little pieces of jewellry 💎
In the evening we took the train to Vang Vieng - never seen such a busy train station before 😯
In Vang Vieng we went to our hostel, which we had to change since our room in the planned one was broken, so they shifted us to another hostel. And oh wow...fail again, we landed in our private dark room with barely any sunlight 😬😶‍🌫️

    January 1, 2024 in Laos ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

The Zipline was super fun, had some nice views while hanging above the jungle 😁
Kayaking down Nam Song river was really fun, there are swimming bars along the route - so we decided to turn it into tipsy kayaking 🤭
After that we got ready for the night and welcome 2024 🥳🍾

Today was just about chilling and recovery from the night out. 🥴

  • Indiana Janes on tour 🤠🤠

    January 2, 2024 in Laos ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

Today the alarm clock was set rather early as I've been doing a paramotor flight for sunrise 🌄🚀 that was a really cool experience 🤩
After breakfast and checkout Martina & I rented mountainbikes and cycled to the Tham None Cave, where you do cave tubing 🧜🏼‍♀️ at the end of the cave you could walk further into the cave, which of course we did - felt like two Indiana Janes 🤠
Afterwards we just enjoyed the sun & scenery at the river for a while before having a snack at a organic farm nearby.
In the evening we drove back to Luang Prabang, checked in to the fancy hostel where Martina will be staying a couple of days while I am heading north. 🧭

  • Up north in Nong Khiaw 🏕🏞🥾

    Jan 3–5, 2024 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

This morning I got on the bus to Nong Khiaw, which is a cute little village about 3 hours north of Luang Prabang. I booked a 3 day tour, however the tour operator in the end had no clue what I booked and put me on another one haha. 🙆🏼‍♀️
It was still fine though, ended up with 3 days of trekking 🥾
Day 1 was a short hike on Pha Daeng, which offers a 360° view, where the guides set up a tent city (as I called it), in order to camp up there and admire sunset & sunrise. 🏕🌄 Both were simply breathtaking - the nature in northern Laos is unbelievably beautiful! 😍😍 and that star-spattered night sky...too bad you can't capture it on a photo!
Day two was a hiking day through Jungle and rice fields to a little village where we slept in a rural homestay, had a 'shower' in the river, enjoyed local dinner and ended up with quiet some happy water, as the group decided it's the stag do of our guide, who's about to get married soon 🍶🍻🕺🏼💃🏼 it was a really funny night with the group - and again...all those stars...simply amazing ✨️
On the third day we took a small motorboat to Muang Xai, another cute village, where we made our way up to a viewpoint and then continued to a waterfall to have a refreshing dip into the natural pool 🩱the boat ride back to Nong Khiaw once again offered stunning views...words just can't live up to all of that beauty ❤
The busride back to Luang Prabang was bit of a pain - but at least I got to gaze at the stars once again. 🤩
Arrived at the hostel rather late and met up with Martina again 🤗

  • Gönnung in Pakse 😇

    January 6, 2024 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Today Martina and I took an early flight to Pakse, a city in the southern part of Laos. ⬇️
We arrived at our hostel at around 10:30 and enjoyed a decent breakfast (finally got my first musli in 3 weeks!!!) before exploring the city. 🧭
Well, exploring is maybe a bit exaggerated, since there actually is nothing to explore 😄 after realizing that, we decided to chill at the hostel for a while, had a nice chat with another traveller and had some of the free ice cream, that was provided by the hostel 🍦🍦
Then we spontanously went for a foot massage 💆🏼‍♀️💆🏼‍♀️ afterwards we both wondered, why we haven't been doing that earlier in our travels as it was soooo good and relaxing 😍
Next stage was the rooftop bar right next to our hostel where we treated ourselves with a (pretty strong 😳) sundowner to watch the sunset 🍹🍸 but as usual, we realized after ordering the drinks that we would only have 20 minutes to finish them, as we had to be at the motorbike rental at 6 to get the introduction to the Bolaven loop, which we are going to to the next days 🤭
We ended the day at a really cozy trattoria with delicious pasta, salad and Tiramisu 🥗🍝🍧 what a day of spoiling ourselves 🥰

  • Bolaven Plauteau Loop 🛵

    Jan 7–8, 2024 in Laos ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

After a decent breakfast at the hostel we packed our daybags and picked up the motorbike for day one of the Bolaven Plateau Loop 🛵
First stop was at a coffee farm, where we did a little tour through the plantation & had a really good cup of coffee (which is kind of rare in SEA 😆) ☕️
Then we drove through a couple of random areas of speed limitation 🚸 and almost had to stop because some cows 🐄🐄 decided to chill o the street before reaching our accomodation for the night.
And actually we were kind of blown away by that view from our yurt...that was pretty cool 🤩
Went to see the nearby waterfalls before we chilled with some beers at our little teracce 🍻 so enjoyed our evening together 🥰🥰
And I finally managed to booked my flights to Australia 🇦🇺✈️
On the second day we left our cozy yurt & continued the loop with some awsome views on the mountains.
But before we did the most important thing of the day, dreaded no money and invested in a bloototh box to have dome music while driving 🎶🔊😄 really made our day!!
After stops at Captain Hook's farm, an organic farm & some waterfalls we drove back to Pakse (in the dark btw, which really was an experience haha) 😬🔦

    January 9, 2024 in Laos ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

I continued to go south this morning and took a bus to Nakasong and then a small ferry 🚤 to Don Det, one of the "4000 islands" in the Mekong river.
4000 is maybe a bit too much, but still there are a couple of nice islands in the very south of Laos.
There's basically not very much to do here, so I am probably just enjoying the sun, the river, all the hammocks and simple island life for a couple of days here 😊

  • Floating Frühshoppen 🛶💦🍺🎶

    January 10, 2024 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

One day while staying on Don Det Miahli had the great idea of renting a kajak (or kanu? 😆) & just paddle around. I wasn't fully convinced at first as I've already been kajaking twice during my stay in Laos, but then I thought hey - why not, just do it! 🥳
So after a decent breakfast we met up with Tommy (an american, whom we got to know the night before) packed our stuff into the drybags and started Splish splash action vol. 3 😂
And most important - my new fancy, shiny speaker was on board too 📻🎶🔊
After about 3 mins on the water, Tommy started talking us into the first round of beers 🍻 - kind of felt like a floating Frühschoppen then 😂
We spent almost all day paddling from one sandy island to the other, swimming around in the Mekong river and trying to get beers from some local villages (which got warmer every time we bought a new one 😵‍💫) but at least we found some 🤷🏼‍♀️😄
It was a really nice & fun day in good company and an amazing surrounding - what else can you ask for?! 🥰🤩

    January 14, 2024 in Laos ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Don Det...what shall I say?! I was usually thinking about staying 3 nights and ended up being here 5 nights haha. 😇
The island has such a chilled and relaxing vibe and allows you to really calm down. At some point you have to, because there is no rush for anything - especially not when it comes to preparing food (I am actually waiting for some right now) 😅😬
So the last couple of days I have just been chilling on the terrace of my guesthouse, went to the neighbour island by bike with Ilona & took a dip there, been reading books or just enjoyed the wonderful sunsets. 😎🦦⛱️🌅
One day we rented a Kajak - but that's worth an extra entry haha.
Don Det itself has not a lot to offer - there are a couple of shops, mybe 10 Bars and probably around 50 restaurants 😆 but I was really amazed by the beauty of the 4000 islands region. I love that there a small islands everywhere you look - Laos has once again taken my breath here! 🤩🤩

  • Thank you Laos 💕

    January 14, 2024 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today was kind of a sad day. Even though I am looking forward to exploring another country, my heart feels kind of heavy about leaving Laos.
    🥺
I absolutely fell in love with the country, it's magnificent nature and its friendly people. 🥰
Life is very simple here. And by saying that I don't mean that it's not complicated, but that living standards & conditions are often very basic. Flushing english toilets are luxury, and you hit the jackpot if there's toilet paper in the bathroom (especially as a woman). 😬🧻🙊 and btw that's true for the whole country.
Seeing how people live here and how they (have to) afford their daily life and still seem very happy just makes me super humble and grateful at the same time. I am thankful for being able to seeing all this and for making this experience. We take so many things for given, while they are just not for other parts of the world. 😑

I really enjoyed every second here, made great experiences and wonderful connections - thank you Laos for having me and treating me that well! ❤

  • Welcome to Cambodia

    January 15, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Yesterday was just a very long travel day. Annoyingly long. Especially because it just took so long, because
    - people were discussing with the border officials at the exit in laos, as they wanted 2$/p for the exit stamp (which of course is not official) 😤
    - we were discussing with the visa officials at the cambodian border, as they charged 8$/p more than officially requested 🤬
    - we made a stop at a random restaurant after 30 mins of drivin in cambodia, which took 1.5h instead of the announced 40mins 😠
    - the average speed a minibus would go is approx 50 km/h because of the bumpy roads 🙄

So going to Siem Reap took us 12h instead of the advertised 8h 🙈🤯

However, the first impression of Cambodia wasn't the best, due to the above described issues. 😬
But today I spent the first day in Siem Reap and have to say that I really like it! 😊
People are very friendly and the city is unexpectedly clean 🧹 and green 🌴🪴.
Until early afternoon I was just strolling around without a clean plan, had nice breakfast and went to some markets.
In the afternoon I did a bicycle Tour with Martina, which was organized by the hostel. 🚴🏼‍♀️🚴🏼‍♀️
It was a really nice tour, where we met some lovely people, saw a nice sunset (again...) 🌄 and also got highly interesting background info on cambodia. 🤓
In the evening we just went to one of the nightmarkets in town & had dinner and fried ice rolls🍦 with people from the hostel 🥰
All in all I'd say it was a really good start in a new country 😊

  • Angkor Wat 🤩🤩

    January 16, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This morning the alarm clock was set early. Very early. It rang at 3:30 🥴 yes, a.m.
The reason therefore was the upcoming sunrise tour to Angkor Wat, which started at 4:30a.m. at the hostel.
And yes, getting up early totally paid off - experiencing sunrise at Angkor Wat was simply amazing. 🤩🤩

With the tour we went to 5 temples that day - Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Keo, Ta Prahm (where Lara Croft was recorded) and Banteay Kdai.✌🏼
If you think that's a lot...well, the area of Angkor is 20x20km, so what we saw today actually was just a fraction of what it has to offer! Can you imagine, that around 1 Mio people lived there in the 7th/8th century?! 😯 (As a comparison, London had 0.5 Mio citizens at the same time).

However, the tour was interesting but rather long...returned to the hostel 10 hours later 🙈
The rest of the day we just chilled at the pool of our hostel, did research on a special project we're realizing tomorrow 🤫 and had a few drinks during the poolparty of the hostel haha 🍸🍹🥂🍶🥃 and yes, we're still going on haha.
    Cheers to that!

  • A needle, a pool, a bike 💉🛀🏼🚲

    January 17, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

After catching up some sleep, I started the day with a nice breakfast at the hostel. 🥑🍞🍳 needed to fuel up for the appointment Martina and I had this morning. 😉
So at 11 we started our walk to the nearby tattoo Studio, where we both got our first tattoos today, because...WHY NOT? (ifykyk) 😁
Have to say I'm super happy about it and like it a lot! 🥰
Afterwards we just chilled at the pool a for a while and toasted to our new body art before we got ready to go to Angkor wat again - we needed to utilize our 3 day pass 😇
But instead of doing a tour again, we rented mountainbikes and just drove around a bit - which actually was way more effort for me since I got a bike with broader wheels, which meant more pedaling for me than for the others haha. 🥵 but it was nice, we got a bit off the beaten path and watched (another 🤭) sunset there. 😊🌅
And now we're just getting ready for the journey to Phnom Penh by nightbus....yaaaaay 🙈🚌

  • Witnessing Cambodias cruel history 🥺

    January 18, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Just a warning: this isn't a funny post at all.

Today we made our way to Choeung Ek, the killing fields of Phnom Penh, which are a historical site where around 17,000 people were killed by the Red Khmer between 1975 and 1979. At that's just the number of people killed at Choeung Ek.
During those 4 years nearly a quarter of Cambodias population was systematically executed.

It was really hard and depressing to be there and see fragments, places and weapons that have been used not too long ago to kill Cambodians. Actually it was shocking to see all that. And you can feel, how Cambodias population is still very affected by it's recent history.
I wasn't sure whether to take pictures on site, but then I decided to do so, in order to create awareness and show, what's been going on during those 4 cruel years.

We've also visited the S-21 genocide museum afterwards, where people (mainly academics, politicians and educated people, but also basically everyone else) were tortured and killed in the most cruel ways you can possibly imagine.

Almost every local has a story or personal experience to tell when it comes to the Cambodian genocide, which is just so sad and heartbraking.
