  • Mellish, Gregory River Camp

    2024年8月14日〜17日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Arrive here -after doubting Andrea, wondering what in the world we're doing on reasonably rough gravel road, intermittently passing burnt out car bodies, seemingly on the way to nowhere (towards Gregory and Burketown), a Wiki Camp with 1 x 5star rating with no mention of caravans, doing coming along a 4WD track into a river bed area - stunning, our best free camp site yet I'll say at this early settling in stage !!
After working out our camp position, Roger does a long reverse with caravan to eventually decide to turn around and park so our door and awning faces the water. We have lunch, leftovers - sausage casserole and silverside. I also have some yoghurt with a banana. Roger has blown up the stand up paddleboard so he goes and uses it. I'm warm enough to go for a swim....but happy to sit and relax in this gorgeous setting. Once Rog back from his paddleboarding, we sit and enjoy a drink. Then we go for a walk together to check the extent of the camping area along the river. Beautiful 'hideaway' with maybe 1 km of camping choice - at least 15 other camping couples/groups here, but don't feel crowded. Ones we chatted to have been coming here for years and stay weeks (7+), they tell us they try and keep this spot a secret! I can see why! The serenity is magic.
We get back to our campsite, Roger jumps in the water again to cool off, then organises our campfire for the evening. We decide on cold silverside and salad for tea, followed by some fresh pineapple (we bought a large whole one for $3.50). Enjoy a few more drinks - beers, followed by Midori and sodas beside our fire pit. Beautiful, calm night. Roger heads into caravan to have his shower, I follow in and decide to leave dishes tonight (only a few) and we'll do them with breakie dishes in the morning. Now relaxing before heading to bed to read.
Thursday morning sees me happy to get up 6.50am to go for a shuffle. It's cool, but can tell it will be warm later...I enjoy checking out the camp area, discovering another track that leads to more riverside camping - beautiful too, no one there at present as not so suited for caravans to access. I get back to our caravan and discover while out with my mobile there's been enough service (none at our campsite) to get a message from Stacy that her Nan (Lorraine East) passed away this morning - sad news for our family. Roger is up and waiting to have breakfast with me - he's already eaten some toast, but made up porridge to share with me. While this happening, camping neighbours leave, this sends Roger into 'shift' mode as he'd prefer that camping site as we can get more sun for our solar set up. I manage to get our dishes done and get changed before we move. I felt sad to leave our original spot, but no longer, as our 'new' campsite is better all round! Settle here before we go driving - show Roger the other camping area before driving out to go check out town of Gregory.
Get back to our camp just after 1pm. I'm relaxing, writing this up while Roger is in the river. Swim time for me too. While in the water I have a nice chat to neighbours and meet their dogs Bear (kelpie X - young) and Wondron (Border Collie X - old). After this swim I stay in my bathers and get in our hammock and read my book, Michael Robotham 'Storm Child'. Roger sitting reading, while running the ute to charge batteries, he goes in and out of the water to stay 'refreshed'. Roger prepares our tea, mince, cabbage (from Steve and Jenny) , vegetables with bolognaise seasoning on the campfire. While this cooking we both have another dunk in the river - bliss! Little flying insects abit of a 'pill' this evening, so we eat inside (now dark), then I have a shower and Roger does our dishes. Roger decides he can manage without his shower, so we're both relaxing, reading before bedtime.
Friday morning 7am I head off for a walk - happy to check out 'off shoots' of the entrance track, none lead anywhere particular- just bush camp areas, people looking for wood etc. At entry gate, try my luck with mobile service (I want to get a bread & butter pudding recipe) - no go today (phew, lucky I got Stacy's message yesterday). Head back to camp, but detour to other camp area to chat with lovely lady I met yesterday morning walking her beautiful border collie Eddie. Yes they're at their camp, so enjoy meeting Matt (the husband), Vanessa and patting Eddie. They're from Tasmania and will be staying here 3 months ( until end Sept) before heading home back to work. Get back to camp 8.30am, Roger up and had breakfast, now reading in the hammock. I have my breakfast, tidy up (get quite a few dead bugs out of our bed) and vacuum up more little bugs. Fingers crossed these little bugs aren't about again tonight. Bathers day today, no plans to go anywhere. R&R, enjoying this fabulous camping spot. Lunch today is yoghurt and fresh pineapple for me, cold meat salad sandwiches for Rog. We both continue to read our books, I've claimed the hammock. This afternoon we get some new campers as close neighbours, Roger assures them we don't mind sharing our 'spot' as we'll be going tomorrow. Once they're settled - 2 Ute's with roof top tents, we all end up swimming in the river. Turns out to be a couple who have been coming to this area to holiday for 30 years, and a friend they have brought along for the 1st time. They are staying for 6 weeks - some of which other family and friends will come and join them. Roger and I have fun using our paddleboard - have offered to the others, but no takers. Back to reading and relaxing before we have our tea - reheated mince and vegetables done on the portable gas burner as we don't feel the need for our fire tonight.
Roger showers, we tidy up and stay in our caravan. Roger goes to bed, I'm sitting up reading - quite into my book Dean Koontz 'Devoted'. Soon be off to bed too.
Saturday morning - another beautiful day in paradise, so sad to be leaving today - will definitely have to return (preferably with family and friends). I get up around 7am to go for my shuffle. When I return I collect Roger for my cool down walk and we visit the Tassie camp so I can introduce Roger to Matt and Vanessa and their gorgeous dog Eddie. Return to our camp in time to greet on older man walking their 3 dachshunds Matilda, Rosie and Basil. Have a lovely chat too with our camping neighbours - they're giving us camping spot tips. We have breakfast beside the river - Roger has been preparing for us to leave. Next I have a swim before I shower, get organised and off we go around 10am.
We agree this is the nicest free camp spot yet!!

  • Gregory QLD

    2024年8月15日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Arrive in this small township, we head to the main focal point 'the pub' as it also has the fuel pumps. Unleaded one out of action, fortunately diesel one is available. We fill up and then go pay to enjoy a few drinks while I get in contact with Robert with a phone call- to let him know we have Stacy's news of her Nan's death and organise his help for our condolences.
Next we drive about Gregory and check out the camping area near/under the bridge - beautiful and very popular, lots of campers.
After our drive about, we head back to the Gregory Downs Hotel to have lunch. Very impressed with this pub, neat, tidy, helpful staff, and the food turns out to be great and reasonably priced 'for out in the sticks'. $18 for my crumbed calamari, salad and chips, $24 for Roger's chicken Burger (had the lot) with chips.
Now we're keen to get back to Mellish camp to go for a swim. Our camping spot about 20kms away.

  • Camooweal QLD

    2024年8月17日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Arrive here after travelling on 150km on gravel road - all went well, though Roger has discovered the Anderson plug that got 'ripped off' along the Birdsville Track has 'ripped off' again - he'll be straight onto fixing it when we get to camp. While in Camooweal Roger does caravan 'house keeping', empties our 'shitter' (his words), reinflates tyres (deflated for rough gravel road travel) and refills our water tanks. I make our lunch, cold meat and salad sandwich for Rog, open savoury toasties for me - with our cuppas. Have a bit of a look around before driving to get fuel. Next we go to the Camooweal Hotel to have a coldie and suss out what we'll do next. Roger mentions travelling on to Barkly Homestead (200km bitumen), but we decide to check out Camooweal's free camping first. Glad we do this - decide to stay tonight.もっと詳しく

  • Camooweal Billabong Campground

    2024年8月17日〜20日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Arrive and find this place quite popular beside Lake Francis, so continue along water's edge until we find a suitable spot for us to set up camp. Lovely billabong/lake with plenty of bird life. Natural state so there is dry long grass to contend with on the way to the water. Well flattened where we sit outside our van. Roger gets busy and fixes the Anderson plug connection. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon sitting outside our van, drinks in hand, enjoying a nice breeze, and watching the birds at the water. Brolga's are relaxing and fun to watch. Tea tonight we're making up a pkt mix Japanese Curry using chicken breasts and fresh fruit and vegetables. Turns out nicely. This location a good spot to watch the amazing sunset colours. Roger showers and we tidy up, then reading before getting into bed. I watch a Paramount + movie The Beach House. OK.
Wake up Sunday morning, lie in enjoying the lovely view from our window towards the water - sunrise colours are beautiful too. I read for 1/2 hr and get up 8am. Roger already has porridge
waiting, he's had his toast, so we have this together with our cuppas. I go for a 1/2 hr walk and check out the next lake, Lake Canellan.
When I get back I make a phone call to use the voucher Tegan gave us for Christmas back in 2020. Book 2 tours, Cutta Cutta Caves and Canoeing in Nitmuluk (Katherine) Gorge. Bookings made, so just check on banking and do some of my manual budget book. Roger during this time has been getting us organised to leave...When I come out of the caravan ready to head off, it comes to my attention that there is a ute 'running' problem. Poor ute - when Rog does manage to get it going, it sounds rougher than a tractor! After some attempts to see if ute will rectify itself - now won't start - time to call RACV which will use RACQ. Told 90 minutes until assistance arrives. Happy with that. Now fingers crossed the problem is easily fixed. We fill in our time, sitting in the shade, reading and chatting to family and friends checking how we're doing. Have lunch, leftovers from tea, and apples and cuppas. Continue waiting in the shade - Roger has put our awning back out - reading to fill in time. 2.35pm 4MURPH Daihatsui SCAT brown ute arrives with our RACQ mechanic. Let's see what happens next.......OK Dmax needs to be trucked back into Camooweal to be put on David's (the mechanic) diagnostic equipment - talking about injectors...?? Looks like our caravan staying here again tonight (shame our chocks are out she's on a lean lol). Roger and I 'stranded' with our caravan for tonight. Dmax taken by KDLD Pty Ltd Vehicle Recovery & Services, David & Katherine Green into their workshop/shed in Camooweal. We will have to wait to hear from David in the morning as to the next steps... So for now, more relaxing here beside the water with drinks in hand. Roger is planning to do a roast lamb for our tea. Camp neighbours (from either side of us) individually call over to check out what the go is, as they saw our ute leave on the truck. Really nice offers from them to help us out, with supplies etc, if needed. Certainly don't have to feel 'stranded' that's for sure. We have a terrific roast and vegetables with gravy, too full to worry about anything else, so just enjoy watching another beautiful sunset before heading into our van to tidy up, Roger has a shower and then we're just relaxing, reading before bed.
Monday morning sees me get out of bed just after 7am to go for a walk into Camooweal to get some bread. Roger's decided we'll have bacon and eggs for breakfast. I get back around 8.15am and we enjoy a cooked breakie, with toast, relish, avocado, tomato, bacon, egg and goats cheese (Meredith) YUM. Do our dishes, and watch quite enviously as other campers head off on their merry way - not us this morning! My shower next on my hit list, Roger already outside relaxing in the shade reading the book about the Dr in Muttaburra. Once I'm showered I join Rog with filling in time, relaxing and reading. Lunch, our usual, Roger cold meat salad sandwiches and me savoury open toasties. Rog has tried to make contact with David to find out about our ute - no answer, so we decide to walk into Camooweal to his workshop to see what we can find out that way. Arrive at David's work area - all locked up with our ute inside the yard, bonnet up. A lady, who is camping beside this yard, comes over to chat - let's us know David's out on RACQ work and not expected back until after dark this evening. Turns out this lady (and I assume with partner) are broken down as well - David has ordered their required part ($3.5K) and it's arrived, just waiting for David to have the time to fit it in (hopefully tomorrow). Rog and I now starting to get the picture of this will not be a quick turnaround fix with our ute! Join the queue! We wander to the pub for a cool down drink, $18 for a schooner beer and can of cider. Roger rings RACV to fill them in, and start in motion our need for 'accommodation' re power etc with our caravan. Next we walk back to our caravan, and then get busy cancelling our bookings we'd just made yesterday for the coming week. Roger cancels our Edith Falls camp site, and I cancel our tours for Cutta Cutta Caves and Katherine Gorge Canoeing. Thankfully, able to do these cancellations at no loss. Roger has messaged David that we'll be wanting to shift the caravan into Camooweal tomorrow and that he'll arrive at the workshop in the morning to help achieve this. OK nothing else to do but relax until tea time, cold meat and salad tonight. Rog shower time, my tidy up then reading until bed.
Tuesday morning, we're up and having breakfast before 8am. Roger heads of into Camooweal (walking) I stay behind intending to get organised and ready for caravan to shift - semi achieved this, as I enjoyed a Whatsapp chat from Tegan, she's got her rocking chair mended (thanks to Robert's advice) and she just sussing out my thoughts on flea products and remedies for her cats. Glad to assist, we decide her cats don't require the 'hard stuff' in her area of Canada. Roger arrives back at our campsite with David's Isuzi work ute, set up to tow our caravan. We both get the van sorted to go. Head off before 9.30am.

  • Carooweal Hotel Caravan Park Qld

    2024年8月20日〜22日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Our unexpected camping spot. This is on our RACV tab at $42.42 per night (grrr on card surcharge). Choose our own campsite, we like No. 14, further down the back (from road noise) and has nice shady trees. Set up caravan - though must confess we had trouble unhitching with unfamiliar vehicle and our 'McHitch' set up (got there eventually, me driving the vehicle off and Rog making height adjustments, and neighbouring camper coming to assist 'scaring' it apart lol). Happy with facilities here, amenities block is dated but kept nice and clean, small pool, laundry $4 a load, dump point and great to have power and water. Get into our bathers, Roger over into the pool to cool down. I organise 2 loads of washing put on, while waiting, I get chatting with 2 other camping sites that are 'stranded' similar to us - they're waiting on their parts to arrive and will fit them themselves. 1st one is a young fella, 25yr old Kalelem, by himself in his own ute, nicely set up Nissan Patrol, was travelling back to Katherine for his work (Government contract work - builder) when he broke down near here, David RACQ got him to this Caravan Park Tuesday (week ago). He's waiting for an injector part to arrive that he'll fit himself. Going fairly 'stir crazy' waiting especially as his latest news is that the part is missing in transit (after he's paid extra to get it quicker). 2nd is a young family, Hayden and Sarah Obome with their children Tayla (her 12th birthday today!) and 4yr old son Atlas. They 'broke down' coming opposite direction from us, turbo 'shat itself' in their 100series Landcruiser - it's towing their neat 18ft caravan. David RACQ collected their setup by truck and delivered them here as well, last Wednesday (day after Kalelem). They've just received their last part required today (other piece arrived yesterday) and as Hayden is a truck mechanic by trade he's busy getting their vehicle sorted. Hopes to get most of it done today, finish it off and check tomorrow so they get back underway Thursday. They are on a year 'look about' and are on the 'tail end' with just 4 weeks until they need to be home (house they've renovated themselves on 25 acres near Bundaberg) to return to work (Sara a hairdresser). Sara and Hayden very welcoming and social, giving us good tips about places they've been that we're heading towards. Roger and I get our washing drying on clothesline Roger sets up around our van. Lunch, our usual, cold meat salad sandwich for Roger, open savoury toasties for me. We now spend the afternoon, alternating between reading, relaxing, chatting with our fellow 'stranded's' and cooling off in the swimming pool. Tea tonight I make a Thermomix pasta again (use up remaining chorizo from previous batch) and Roger makes up Golden Syrup dumplings and cooks them in the airfryer, works a treat. Use thermomix to make custard to have with the dessert dumplings. Sarah has invited Kalelem and us for after dinner BYO drinks at their campsite - we'll help eat Tayla's birthday cake, after singing Happy birthday to her. Lovely company, chatting happily together until we call it a night around 9.30pm. Back at our van, Roger heads off for a shower, I tidy up. Reading and bedtime.
Wednesday sees us have a leisurely start, I go have shower before I have breakfast. Roger has his breakie while I'm out. Kalelem's part turned up early this morning, he"s working flat out to get himself underway as quick as he can. Which he does. mid morning we look about from our caravan and he's gone. All going well with Hayden's vehicle too - he's test driving his about, shortly after lunch. Again our standard lunch today. This morning Roger checked in with David about our ute, have decided it's an electrical fault probably caused by a rat/s chewing wiring. This makes sense to us - good to know that problem is being found. While Roger off doing this, I'm making Anzac biscuits (thermomix) and trying out cooking them in the airfryer. This works well when I turn the biscuits over after 1st cook, to brown up the bottoms.
Afternoon is filled in by reading and checking emails, and more swimming to stay cool. I also call over to Sara, take the Anzac biscuits, to catch up on and take notes on some recommendations on places they have been that we are heading towards. Anzac biscuits all eaten up, Obome family, especially kids Tayla and Atlas, enjoyed them. Another swim, then back to the caravan for easy tea - reheat (microwave) last night's pasta and follow with cold golden syrup dumplings and custard. Roger and I go for a sunset swim in the pool, Obome family too and meet another young couple, backpackers, who are waiting on parts to get their campervan fixed as well. They have been waiting coming on close to 2 weeks! Their latest required parts haven't arrived yet. After this swim we shower, then grab a bottle of wine to have drinks with Hayden and Sara - as they're leaving in the morning. Lovely family, enjoy the evening with them - then back to our van after 9pm for our bedtime.
Thursday morning, we're wondering if we'll get the opportunity to leave today if the ute can be fixed in time...I get up before 7am and go for a shuffle, by the time I get back Rog has breakfasted and is heading off to see what David's up to with our ute. I get changed, have my breakfast then relax, contemplating on making another batch of Anzac biscuits, Rog gets back, unsure when ute will be worked on as David doing other jobs. Say our goodbyes to Sara, Hayden, Tayla and Atlas - they're happily heading for Corella Dam today. Swap details to keep in contact via facebook. We're relaxing when Roger gets the call from David that our ute is fixed and ready to pay for and collect. Yay, we spring into gear now, forget about biscuit making! I get on with inside van tidy up and pack away while Roger goes for the ute. $350 bill paid and back with our ute sounding and running like it should. Team work and we're underway leaving Camooweal 11.30am.

    2024年8月22日〜23日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

We arrive and check this place over - initial impression from the road not that great, as overflowing bins around the toilet area...
We drive past this and head out into the open camping area - which does provide lovely water views. Have a debate on whether to keep driving to another camp - but I decide I'm tired (getting grumpy) and it will be nice to stop.
Choose our park - set up, awning out. Get our drinks and now to relax in our campchairs in the shade and enjoy!
Tea tonight is tacos, Roger cooks up the mince mixture (adding kidney beans!) outside on the gas cooker, while I chop up the salad inside. This evening we're 'plagued' by little black insects (small enough to get through our caravan window mesh) so we keep lighting to a minimum - I read my book, well away from bed! Roger showers, we've already tidied up, dishes etc so bedtime.
Friday morning, 10 weeks today since our take off, we get up before 7am to enjoy watching the sunrise over the water. I go for a short walk, return with a left behind Max track. Roger has our porridge ready and waiting. Breakfast then shower for me. Roger keeps busy, dishes and getting us ready to set off for the day. We're underway around 8.15am.

    2024年8月23日〜24日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

Arrived and got fuel, as Roger paid for this, he booked an unpowered site for tonight $28.
Get directed to where we can park, and we quickly set up, as not putting out the awning or unhitching. I get changed and 'freshen up' and we head to the pub as happy hour goes from 4pm to 6pm - with $6 beers. What a terrific place and set up. So much to look at and enjoy! We order the Beef & Barra meals $38.50 each - full beef for me, 1/2 beef and 1/2 barramundi for Roger. While sitting listening to the live music Drew Blundell (really good) we got a beaut surprise - we reckonised Bill and Trina, from Dunkeld! They came and sat with us until our meals arrived (their takeaway pizza came along at the same time). They're here for 2 nights (on the 2nd tonight) visiting a grandson who is working on a nearby property/station. Trina is dealing with a broken arm (fell while on a hike) that happened on this holiday while they were in Cairns visiting their daughter. They're about to fly back to Melbourne to go home.
After we finished our terrific meals - served with salads you helped yourself to from a servery, we stayed and listened to Drew for a while. Then headed back to our caravan for the night. Roger goes and has a shower, I catch up on our budgeting books so I know how our finances are travelling too. My only concern today is I've 'lost' my caravan key - I feel I've probably dropped it at Three Ways Roadhouse today. I have rang them, but no key has been handed in (yet). Going to bed to read for a while.
Saturday morning sees us both get up to go for a dunk in the Daly Waters Pub pools at 7am - we only went in the one with the spa joined to it as the other lap pool had bubbles in it (staff looking after it felt kids must of been using bubble mixture in it yesterday). What a great way to start the day! We were the only ones using the pool at this time. so great to do my laps in total relaxation. Rog left earlier than I to start getting breakfast happening. I have my shower on the way back to the caravan. Then breakfast time with Rog. Now we get the caravan sorted and tidy, ready to leave, before we go for a walk tgether to check over the pub and surrounds before we go. For fun, get a polariod photo taken by a staff member to leave stuck up in the pub - just a charity donation (into charity container on the bar) required for this. Then walk around outside for a check out before we go. Drive away around 10.15am.

  • Bitter Springs Cabins&Camping Mataranka

    2024年8月24日〜25日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Arrived and booked in, choosing a powered site that we get shown to. Site 72, Rog does a great job getting our van parked and we happily settle in. 1st priority is to get into our bathers and sunscreened up, so we can go try out Bitter Springs Thermal pool. It's beside the caravan park so it's a nice stroll to go try it out. Very scenic, tropical landscape, arrive at the pool (river like lagoon) to find it's very popular today, quite a crowd. You get in the water via steps and ladder to float with the current, I guess 200m, to another set of steps to get out and follow a path back to do it again (as many times as you like). The water is lovely and clear and quite warm (so with today's heat we didn't find it very refreshing). While floating down you did have to watch out for tree branches etc. that you could bump into. People were using noodles to float with - seemed to help stay away from 'snags'. So the noodles looked like a great idea to me! We did try to buy some noodles at reception in caravan park - but all sold out. We do 2 'laps' and decide we'd had enough - ready to go back to camp for cool down drinks. Which we did! Afternoon relaxing at camp, then have our showers before early tea. Roger cooks up steak and vegetables. We enjoy this, then tidy up and get organised to drive into Mataranka for 7pm show of Nathan Grigg's whip cracking.
This goes for a good hour, then we come back to relax and get prepared to leave early tomorrow for the tours we have booked. Bedtime.
Up early for us on a Sunday morning, 6.30am to be ready to leave this park by 7.30am as we need to make the Cutta Cutta Caves for our 9am tour. So we have our breakfast (usual) and get the caravan packed up ready to go. We get away on time. Bye bye to this lovely spot....onwards to the next.

At the end of his show, Nathan comes around the crowd with a large hat for us all to contribute some money for his performance. We put in $20. He relies on this 'pass the hat', sales of his whips (he makes), and his merchandise sales to make his living.
I hope he continues to do well with this - he certainly is amazing with his whip work.

We enjoy the longer walk back to our vechiles. before heading off to Katherine to do some grocery shopping before going to our booked camp at Kumbidgee. To get ready for our next tour at 1pm.

It takes us a bit of convincing that we are at the right place, as there is no clear signage and no one around at the time. We decided to trust Wiki Camps and find a sunny spot (solar requirement) to park near a building ( it turns out used to be a restaurant). Shortly after we set up, Caroline. one of our hosts calls by to introduce herself and sets our minds at ease that we're in the right place! We're in a rush to have our lunch, sandwiches and open toasties, before we head off for our next tour, that requires us to arrive around 12.30pm for a 1pm start. We head off at 12.15pm.
Arrive back here after our Nitmiluk Gorge 1/2 day Canoeing tour around 5.30pm. Time to have a couple of drinks before getting tea. We are relaxing, drinks in hand, looking out over the dam from our seats out front of the closed restaurant, when Caroline, our host shows up. She has a lovely chat with us, asking how our day has been, and to let us know she's here to feed the Brim they have in the dam. We are welcome to come and feed them too - so we do! This is great - the brim are so fast and quite big, fun to watch. They don't catch them, not the best species for eating - and I can tell Caroline just likes having them in the dam. After Caroline leaves we have our tea, Roger cooks the chicken snitzels and I cut up the salad - perfect on this very warm evening. We tidy up, have showers and get to bed. I watch a movie on Prime - a romantic comedy, certainly puts me to sleep!
Monday sees us up around 7am., having a leisurely breakfast, then getting ourselves organised to head into Katherine to do some caravan 'house keeping' and fuel up. We leave this terrific spot (just a bit of morning traffic noise) around 9am.
In Katherine, while having a cuppa we come across Andrew, Georgie and their dog Daisy. So nice to cross paths again, they're on their way back from Darwin - now going to head to Broome.
We leave Katherine, heading to Edith Falls. to stay 2 nights at Leliyn Campground. While driving there, we have a Whatsapp call from Tegan 💕

  • Nitmuluk National Park Canoe tour

    2024年8月25日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Arrive on time for our 1pm tour. Taken by boat through 1st Gorge (not able to be guaranteed Saltwater crocs not in this one) to the 2nd Gorge where Nutimiluk Tour's are sure is saltie free. We get allocated our canoes, Rog and I choose to go in a double, and have listened well to our pre Canoeing instructions. We have to be back at this pick up point at 4.45pm, we are to go no further than the end of the 3rd Gorge and we must not go on the banks where 'Do not disturb, fresh water crocodiles nesting' signs are showing. We can go wherever we manage otherwise and enjoy swimming in these 2 gorges. What a stunning place to be - especially on a 35°+ day. We have packed snacks, water, sunscreen etc - and wearing bathers, sunglasses and hats, so we have a fabulous afternoon. Tired and very happy at the end of this tour. 5 star rating for sure!もっと詳しく

  • Leliyn Campground Edith Falls

    2024年8月26日〜28日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Arrive and drive about campground until we find our site No. 50. Requires a bit of strategy to get our van positioned, so we drive around the campground again to come into our site the way we'd like for our awning etc. Takes some 'tweeking' with Rog's reversing and forward a few times to get our spot how we like - happy! Roger very keen (as it's so warm) to have our lunch and then get ourselves to the water spots here for a swim/dunk. Both looking forward to this. I have a few things I want to do first in the caravan., budgeting stuff. so our lunch is held off for a little while (turns out just as well!). Just as we've almost finished making up sandwiches for Rog. and toast and reheated taco mince for me - Rog notices a vehicle with caravan pull up quite close to us...he makes a comment like ' oh, hope these people don't think this site is theirs' (or some such!), naturally I'm thinking 'what a joke' ! Next thing we've got a fella knocking on our caravan door - saying just that - that they're booked for site No 50 for tonight.....Roger immediately steps out to see what can be worked out with this predicament! Turns out they (a couple) can prove their booking with a confirmation on their mobile. As all bookings for this place need to be made online beforehand - this is the correct thing to be able to show. Unfortunately Roger didn't have any confirmation to show, even though we thought he'd booked a few days back (on the 23rd). As we are now in this place with no mobile reception or WiFi, we had no choice but to apologise and vacate the site. As we were just about to have our lunch, I explained this, and they were nice enough to be prepared to let us finish our lunch 1st. Rog couldn't settle to do this, he started packing us up, so I quickly ate my lunch (talk about indigestion!) then completed and packed Roger's sandwiches into containers and put in the fridge. Next proceeded to tidy up and get the inside stuff of the caravan ready to move. Roger had us sorted and shifted from the site pretty quickly. We left the couple on good terms, just us driving away frazzled and embarrassed. As we drove away, we reassessed what we would do - firstly drive until we had mobile service so we could check about our booking and when it was made for (dates). So when this happened we discovered Roger hadn't finalised the booking - turns out no booking was made at all! Oh well, Rog isn't going to forget this in a hurry! Decided to keep heading Darwin direction, and I suggest we check out Jen and Michael's recommendation of Lazy Lizard Tavern and Caravan Park in Pine Creek.もっと詳しく

  • Lazy Lizard Tavern and Caravan Park

    2024年8月26日〜27日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

This place is in Pine Creek. Turns out to be as good as Jen and Michael were hoping for us. After having a drink at the bar and a quick look around, decision made to 'cool our heels' and refocus by staying here for a night.
So we book in for a powered site $41, and settle ourselves into our allocated site No. 6.
We put in the rest of the day relaxing, Roger going and cooling down in the pool a few times, while I update my FindPenguins journal and other things I'd like to get done - including writing in sympathy cards for Stacy and her family on the death of Lorraine East (Stacy's Nan, Jenelle's Mum).
We go back to the Lazy Lizard's bar for Happy hour drinks between 4 to 6pm. Disappointed that Rog and I missed checking out the car display that it is here, we mucked up on the opening times for this (12 noon to 4pm each day) - we mistakenly thought it was open to 5pm. We end up chatting with other travellers, before coming back to our caravan for tea. Chicken snitzels and salad. Roger has a shower, then relaxing, bedtime.
Tuesday morning sees me up around 7am to go for a 'shuffle' around Pine Creek. I head to the Stuart Hwy then come back and do a couple of laps around an oval before jogging off to the lookout and returning to our caravan park site. Roger tells me he's been for a walk checking out the sights as well. He now waits for me to have my shower as he's prepared stuff to cook up some bacon and eggs for us. We enjoy this in the park's camp kitchen. Tidy up and get ready to leave - we do a quick short walk to the park beside the caravan park to check out all the bats we've been told are there....then I go to the Pine Creek Post Office to post off the sympathy cards to Stacy and family. Leave after 10am.

  • Ronnie's in Gray Palmerston NT

    2024年8月27日〜9月2日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Arrive, feeling so happy to finally be in Darwin and to be catching up with Rog's best mate Ronnie. Ronnie is not at home, though it's obvious he's not planning to be away long, as music is playing and doors have the screens for airflow. Ronnie's place has room for us to park our caravan to one side of his home so we are doing that when he comes back. We finish settling the van and unhitching the ute, then Ronnie gives us the tour (Roger has been here before) of his place so we can make 'ourselves at home'. We will sleep in our van, and use Ronnie's down stairs bathroom as our ensuite. We sit on Ronnie's veranda (his home is 2 storeys) which is on the 2nd level (his vehicles - 3 bays - park underneath) and enjoy the view, some drinks and a chat. I get washing happening as we have 2 loads to do. Then Rog and I decide we have a few things we'd like to do at the shops, so we drive about Palmerston - post card., caravan key cut, check out solar panels, see if I can get a new screensaver on my mobile (didn't today). When we get back to Ronnie's it's pool time - Ronnie doesn't join us (water in his small pool is still too cold for him) - though he sits in the surrounds and chats. Gary (his older brother) turns up to say G'day which is great. Learne, Gary's wife, and their daughter Zoey arrive shortly after. By this time Rog and I out of the pool, I've had a shower and we've started organising tea. Gary and family don't stop for tea. Tonight with Ronnie we have chicken kebabs (spicy) with salad. After tidy up, Rog has his shower, and we stay chatting out on the veranda. I go and make a phone call to Jenny (Jen and Michael have started their fabulous tour Perth to Darwin, flying and yacht cruising). When I return to Rog and Ronnie we all agree time to call it a night. Back to our caravan, Rog straight to bed and I'm writing this up before my bedtime too.
Wednesday morning, thinking of Stacy and her family very much as they have the funeral of their Mum, Nan. Great Grandmother Lorraine East happening today. Rog and I get up around 7am. Roger goes and has breakfast in the house with Ronnie, I stay and have my porridge (just more convenient) in the van and do some updating of our budget books. Later in the morning Roger and I drive into Darwin, stopping at places on the way that could stock solar panels/blankets (pricing). While at one of these shops I purchase a fold up camp chair for Rog's birthday gift - have to pretend it's for me lol. 1st stop in Darwin is the Tourist Information Centre- stock up on brochures for ideas. Then we go walking about the shopping area - end up at a Woolworths getting the sunscreen we like at a better price ($19 instead of $28 for 400ml). Next we have lunch at Nonna Dumplings - very good. Go back to our car ($6 for 2hrs parking) and drive to a waterfront carpark ($5 for the day), so we can do the tour of the WW2 Oil Tunnels- amazing! Now we got walking and check out the Darwin City Waterfront precinct - love it! Stop and have a drink and a snack at Hot Tamaly, before going back to our ute to drive about and check out Cullen Bay area, really liking this place. Get some fuel in Parap, cheapest we've seen for a while $1.75 per litre. Go back to Ronnie's, I get another load of washing going, Roger disconnects the empty gas bottle off the caravan (so we'll remember to exchange it tomorrow), then it's pool time! Ronnie comes and joins us at the pool for drinks. Relax here until we feel we'd better get organised for tea. I go have a shower and give Ronnie's spare bathroom a clean, as grateful to have the use of it, then hang out our washing. Tea tonight is a slow cooker lamb casserole Ronnie has cooked for us - really tasty. After tidy up, do the dishes, I try to make a camp booking for Litchfield National Park - after numerous failed attempts, have conceded we'll have to ring tomorrow to see how we can book. Now relax in Ronnie's loungeroom chatting, I get a call from Raels so I go out on the veranda to chat 😀. Roger goes for a shower and then we all decide to call it a day - bedtime.
Thursday sees us up by 8am. Roger breakfasts with Ronnie in the house while I have my porridge in the caravan. Once we're organised we leave and go shopping around for a solar panel for our caravan set up, and get the gas bottle refilled. We also get some spare Anderson plugs, a battery pack and some Bluetooth ear buds. By this stage it's time for Riger's donating blood appt in Casuarina so we head there. While Rog is off donating, I have a quick call with Stacy, her Nan's funeral went as well as she could have expected, and her news that her passport is already on its way to her - yay! When this call finishes, I wander around the Casuarina Square Shopping Centre - all I purchase is 2 more sunscreens (stocking up on the one we like while we see it at a good price). I head back to the ute once Rog let's me know he's back there. Now we drive to the Museum, once there 1st thing we do is have lunch at the Cafe. Very nice, corn & zucchini fitters with avocado and poached egg for me, and eggs Benedict for Roger - both of us have cold drinks., OJ and soft ginger beer. Now enjoy a good 3 hours in the Museum - wonderful as it is free.
When we have finished at the museum, we drive to Darwin Sailing Club to have a drink and take in the magnificent seaview. Keen to get back to Ronnie's to relax and have a swim, so when we get back to Ronnie's, that's exactly what we do. I shower before tea - Roger using our thermomix to make a Mushroom risotto, and Ronnie cooking up some of his Barramundi- so very nice meal. Followed up with some watermelon for dessert. Tidy up, do dishes, then watch some TV with Ronnie, before Rog and I retire to our caravan to go to bed.
Friday morning up around 7am, Rog has breakfast in at Ronnie's, I have mine in the caravan. We get ourselves ready to leave on time to make sure we get to Crocodylus Park when it opens at 9am. We achieve this.
We have a beaut time here, about 4 hours, before heading to Palmerston Oasis shopping centre to get groceries for our planned picnic tea we're having tonight with friends Lisa and Tony. While here Roger gets his hair cut and I check out SpecSavers and make an appointment to get transition glasses. Then as I see a 50% off sale on eye liner tattooing, I make an appointment to get that done on the same day as well (Wednesday 4 September). Also while we are at this shopping centre I manage to get Roger to try on some hats, as he needs a new one, and we find him a good one. Yay, that's his birthday gift sorted. Time to get back to Ronnie's for a late lunch, we use up the leftover Mushroom risotto. Roger also has a quick dunk in Ronnie's pool to cool off. Next we get our picnic food and drinks organised, and I get in my bathers as well and we head off to Berry Springs to meet up with Lisa Sanders and her partner Tony. Google maps leads us astray a little, so we were later than our 4pm scheduled meet up time (Lisa and Tony were too!). All good.
Once we get back from this outing at 9.30pm we catch up with Ronnie in his home, before we head to our caravan for the night. Rog has a shower before bedtime. I sit up for a while, catching up 'budgeting books' and writing up this.
Saturday sees us happily having a 'rest day'. We did drive out, following Ronnie with his trailer he's building, to Gary and Learne' s place (live nearby) in the morning, but apart from that we stayed put at Ronnie's for the day. Also used this day to eat up our leftovers from previous meals, and general tidy up. Roger washed the ute.
Sunday sees us up at 7.30am, Roger has breakfast in the house with Ronnie, I have my porridge and cup of tea in our caravan. I go and use Ronnie's kitchen to make up a potato salad, and I use my thermomix to make a banana cake (we had 3 overripe bananas). Once I finished cooking, Ronnie offers to take Rog and I to Howard Springs to feed the Barramundi and turtles. We haven't had lunch yet, so we decide to get something on the way. As we're heading off we get a Whatsapp call from Tegan, a group chat as Robert has answered as well. Thankfully, Robert remembers (thanks maybe to Stacy? Lol) to wish his Dad a Happy Father's Day, so Tegan does as well. We stop at a Palmerston shopping centre and buy some Subway - which we take to Howard Springs and have at a picnic table there.
Once we get back to Ronnie's it's pool time for Roger and I (pool water still too cold for Ronnie). Ronnie happy to sit at the side of the pool chatting with us. I go for a shower, to be ready to leave around 4.30pm to go back out to Gary and Learne's for tea. As it's Father's Day Learne's Dad and her brother, and a lovely family friend Jazzy is there too. With Learne and Gary's children (young adults) Zoey and Josh there as well (still living at home) it's a lovely evening with a beaut group of people. Learne and Gary have been busy preparing a lovely meal, smoked brisket, roast lamb (this meat we provided for them to cook), roast chicken. potato bake, salads and Learne's sourdough foccocia. Followed by Sticky date pudding. Needless to say my potato salad wasn't really in demand, and I didn't produce my banana cake (it came back to Ronnie's). We leave and come home around 9.30pm - I drive Ronnie's car as both Ronnie and Roger have had a few drinks (I didn't have any tonight - just water). Roger goes and has a shower, then we all agree it's time to go get some sleep.
