    Galway City!

    I've fallen off the blog wagon, need to catch up on four days. Too much Guinness and not enough time!
    We didn't get far from Kinvara, only to Galway which is about 25 klms I think. Ireland cities seem much easier to drive into than English ones. We found a parking garage close to the city center, and had a look around the old part of town. Some interesting little spots. Buy the time we'd done some sight seeing and had lunch we decided to stay the night. Should be some good music around hopefully! Hotel cost us three times as much as we'd paid anywhere else so there had better be.

    What a fun evening we had. First pub we stopped in had a huge session and we stayed to watch them for an hour or so, then went across the road to another one. It was packed and these five ladies in the front row befriended us, told us who all the people were singing or playing. We had a great time with them and one huge guy there singing had apparently won all these talent quest in Ireland, he should could belt them out.
    Then a lovely older man who was one of the girls favourites sang a song and recited a poem he'd just written. Ha ha about Galway winning the Hurling comp for the first time in God know how long. It was really good.

    Unfortunately we had to leave them to get some food, which they thought was ridiculous! One of them told me " when you're at the pub, If you haven't eaten by 8 you're not eating till tomorrow" they did send us off to get the best fish and chips in Galway.    Weiterlesen

    The Wet Coast

    Heading up the west coast. Got a few stops planned. It's not looking like the best of days really. It's windy, raining and cold.

    We stopped at Mullaghmore Head. Some of the best surfers in the world come here to surf the enormous way they get when the tide runs out. Not today though, there are no waves at all. Pretty place though and very quite and laid back.

    Next stop is the Glencliff Horseshoe Drive. Only about ten klms around the rim of what looks like an old crater. It was a nice drive, don't know that I would rate it as a major attraction. Would have helped if it wasn't raining too I guess.

    We drove on to Donegal after that, it's still raining and we were drenched looking for a room. Found one above one of the pubs. 167 steps as usual, but lovely room. Now what to do out of the rain. Donegal has a castle so it wins. It's a nice one too, was neglected for about three hundred years, but is being slowly restored by the Irish Heritage Society. Fantastic job they have done so far.

    Called into the Reel Inn for a drink. There were four old guys in there and they cracked us up for an hour or so. God there were f bombs going off left right and centre. And the young barman who they all gave a hard time, he seemed to be used to them, so I'd say they spend a bit of time there.

    Guitars and Giants!

    Next morning we had breakfast with Gabriel and heard all about Lilly the former owner of the pub and her frequent appearances. Sounded pretty convincing I must say. I wished we were staying another night so I could have another shot at seeing her!

    Visiting the Lawden Guitar Factory this morning and I was prepared to be bored out of my skull but it was a very interesting tour. Very production line, but still a lot of hands on stuff.

    Turns out the Castle Ward nearby is a famous Game of Thrones Location. More the grounds and the old castle and stable yards. Must do a lot of work before filming. You could recognise the locations but only just! Lunch at the Lobster pot in Strangford and then off to the top of Ireland for the Giants Causeway and Carrick-a-reek rope bridge.
    It didn't take as long to get up there as we thought so we stopped in at The Dark Hedges on the way. The Kings road in Game of Thrones!

    It was still not quite five when we got to the Giants Causeway. A good time really because most of the tourists have left. All the bus groups anyway. Amazing rock formations and the views from the top of the cliff walk, spectacular!

    Doesn't seem to be as much music in Northern Ireland which is a bit of a shame so off to find a feed and a bed for the night!    Weiterlesen

    Goodbye Ireland

    The last place on the Northern Ireland agenda is Carrick-a-reek Rope Bridge. Not such a great looking morning today, bit overcast but no rain yet! Hope fully it will hold off.
    Nice walk along to cliffs to the rope bridge, then they have someone at each end so only so many people can get on it at once I guess. It's a little scary but not nearly as bad as some I've been on. Pretty sturdy so it didn't sway much luckily.

    Plenty of sea birds on the little island it connects too. We watched the gannets diving for their breakfast for a while. Then walked back along the cliffs. Lots of people and buses arriving by then. Drove along the coast road all the way back down to Larne where we are getting the ferry over to Scotland.

    We had a couple of hours to kill so we went for a quick drive into Carrickfergus. Visited the Castle, which is right on the waterfront and was in use right up until 1929 I think the guide said. Wish we'd had more time there it seems like a nice little city!

    The ferry only took two hours, got in about seven. We'd booked a B and B while we waited to board in Cairnryan where the ferry lands. Turns out there is not much to Cairnryan, only one street, no pub, no shop, no take aways. Luckily the lady who owns the B and B had bought some fish just in case we hadn't had any dinner. So we had a lovely fish and chip meal for tea served in her little restaurant, just us all alone. She had a bar as well, so a few drinks with her and her husband and a couple of their friends filled in the rest of the night.    Weiterlesen

    Isle of Skye

    Taking the Road to the Isles to The isle of Skye. The sun has come out this afternoon for our trip along this pretty spectacular drive down to get the ferry across from Molaig to Armadale.

    We lucked out with a B and B here. We found this place on google maps and gave them a call. There are heaps of b and bs here but nearly all of them are fully booked. It's been an incredible busy year apparently. A lovely couple have been running this B and B for 40 years so as you can imagine they have everything down pat. Lovely touch, tartan carpet in all the rooms, chocolates waiting for you in your room and the heating turned on ready! It's cold too, time for the puffer jackets!

    Some lovely coastal views on the way up and then a drive across the Cullen hills which is a pretty barren looking peat moor up to Portree.
    It's almost in the centre of the island so a good base for a couple of days.

    Did a big loop around the Trotternish Drive, it's not that many miles but plenty of lookouts and walks so it took us all day. Stopped off at the Island life museum, Quitang, Kilt Rock and waterfall, Brother's Point, The Old Man of Storr. And we finally saw a highland cow, so gorgeous!

    Back to the mainland

    The sun is out this morning, so we went for a quick trip back out to see The Old Man of Storr when he's not incased in cloud. Quite a few hikers had the same idea and were there all set to hike up to the top. I was happy with a few photos.

    Off on another road trip around Loch Ness. We stopped in Port Augusta which is at the bottom of the Loch and then followed a little road all the way along the Lock to Inverness.
    Loch Ness is very picturesque, no wonder Nessie has called it home for so many years. We kept our eye out for her but it was such a nice day she was probably off sunning herself somewhere! They are closing this road tomorrow to run the Loch Ness Marathon so there are signs all over for the runners. Pretty hard course for them lots of hills and turns. At one stop someone asked me which distant I was running? Ha ha nice to know I still look like I could do it!

    Just coming out of Fort Augusta a young girl was stuck on the side of the road with a flat tyre and we stopped and another couple as well. Would have changed the tyre for her but there was no spare, I couldn't believe it, how can you hire someone a car with no spare tyre. Anyway Graham flagged down a car going into Port Augusta luckily it was a couple of young girls too and asked them to drop her off at the garage. Hope she managed to get it sorted poor kid, bit scary when you're all by yourself!

    We got into Inverness about 3 and looking for a hotel or B and B, everything is booked out. Bloody marathon people, apparently this is the busiest weekend of the year. We decided we may as well drive on a bit further and thanks to the one way system drove down a smaller street. And like providence a Vacancy sign on one of the b and b's nice little place close to the city, perfect.    Weiterlesen

    Inverness

    Had a nice relaxing Sunday in Inverness, walked around town, had a look at the castle, the older part of town, the churches and the cathedral.

    Had a lovely lunch and then watched some of the runners come in, a few of them looked like they were doing it pretty tough. Big achievement to finish a marathon though so all credit to them.

    Back to Blair's for a rest and then off for a drink at the oldest pub in Inverness, turned out they have a Sunday music session which was just starting as we turned up. Pretty good too, we enjoyed it even though we could only understand half of what he was singing. Enjoyed chatting to a few locals as well, everyone is very friendly.    Weiterlesen

    Getting from Inverness to Edinburgh proved harder than we thought. Held up at roadworks for over an hour, There must have been three miles of cars on each side. Great fun when you're starving and dying for the loo.

    Edinburgh is a beautiful city, gorgeous old building, pretty streets, cool shops and so many little alley ways or closes as they call them. Visited the Castle and the Cathedral, walked up and down the Royal Mile.

    Took a ride on the Hop On Hop Off Bus, we needed a break from all the stairs and hills.
    Toured Mary King's Close, which is an old street buried under the newer court buildings on the Royal Mile. Interesting and fun tour with a hilarious guide.    Weiterlesen

    Lakes District

    We are at Brougham Hall Farm for three nights. Arrived yesterday late in the afternoon after travelling down from Edinburgh. We'd stopped in Gretna Green, which has a honourable mention in every Georgette Heyer book I've ever read and I have to say it was a great disappointment. Just shops and restaurants and one little museum at the blacksmiths. Stopped again in Penrith for lunch and stocked up with wine, ham, cheese and beer so we wouldn't have to venture out again for nourishment.

    Sarah's place here is lovely, Huge bedroom and our own dining and living room and voted the biggest bathroom with the best shower all trip! It's a working farm with pigs, sheep, horses, turkeys, geese, guinea fowl and chooks galore!

    Another guitar workshop tour this morning, which couldn't have been more polar to the other one. Then when we are off for a day touring The Lakes!

    Had a lovely day for it, a rarity I'm sure so we did see it at its best. Gorgeous lakes with beautiful mountains and waterfalls! Sarah advised us to stay away from the bigger lakes so we toured some of the smaller ones, Ellswater, Grasmere , Rydalwater, and Thirlmere. Saw the top of Windermere at Ambleside at lunchtime after we'd come down The Struggle a little narrow very steep connecting road.

    Stopped in at Aria Force on the way and Keswick town for a bit of a look and then Castlerigg Stone Circle. These two seemed have escaped the popularity of a lot of the other attractions. England seems to be able to make a tourist event out of nearly anything but occasionally you find a little forgotten gem.

    Home again then for a rest before dinner out at Dockray Hall.    Weiterlesen

    Hadrian's Wall

    After some more expert tips from Sarah we are off to see Hadrian's Wall. Rements of the wall the Roman built across the width of England. Those Romans were everywhere and since they really knew how to make something that lasts there are lots of remains everywhere.

    Stopped in at Lanercost Priory on the way. Nice church attached to it, quite a few of the church ladies were in there decorating for Harvest Week. And plenty of restoration work under way at the priory.

    On then to the first Roman Fort. They built forts all along the wall. Lots of different sites with remnants of the wall, quarries where they mined the rock but The Highlight of the day though was Housestead. It was a huge Roman fort and command centre. Barracks and a hospital, kitchens and bathrooms. Sits in a rather commanding position on top of a hill. Gorgeous views from all sides.

    After a few hours we were walled out and headed off to find some lunch. Cross country trip over the Pennines Sarah had marked on the map for us. Holy Moly talk about windy and high. Lots of motorbikes and cyclists up there. I was glad they were all coming up while I was going down. It was a great drive though. We stopped at the bottom for a coffee and a group of cyclists were fortifying themselves before they headed up! Crazy people.    Weiterlesen

    Yorkshire Dales

    Leaving Penrith to travel over to West Yorkshire. Sarah has planned out a route to take us over the smaller roads of The Yorkshire dales.

    We took our time and stopped for lots of photos breaks. Another beautiful vista around every corner. Stopped for coffee at the cheese factory at Hawes where they tried to convince Graham the way to eat fruitcake was with a huge slice of cheese on top. He's usually up for any weird combination and he gave it a go but it was too much for him.

    The Yorkshire dales are lovely, beautiful rolling hills with rivers, streams and waterfalls everywhere, hundred of miles of rock walls and stone barns. Gorgeous cows, horses and sheep. It's a pleasure just to look at it.

    Found our next B and B in Oakworth. Talk about from the sublime to the ridiculous. This one is as tiny as Sarah's was huge. Abby our new hostess is lovely and it seems to have everything we need so I'm sure it will be fine once we stop bumping into each other.

    There's a steam train that stops almost at the end of the driveway so we went down to check it out. Took a ride up to Keighley and then back to Howarth. Bronte sisters town of fame, very picturesque Main Street but omg the walk up from the station nearly killed me. Talk about steep.

    Out and about in West Yorkshire

    It's Sunday today and I'm determined to have a last Sunday lunch in England. It's a bit of a gloomy day to start with, but had started to brighten up by the time we got ourselves ready to go.

    First stop was the Bingley Five Locks a series of locks on one of the canals. We've seen these before but they never fail to entertain. Funniest thing was one of the boats going down was someone we'd meet in Wales. They'd been on their boat for six months. That would be really testing the friendship!

    Then on to Saltaire Village. One of the most perfectly preserved Victorian villages. All built by one family for their Salt Mill. Factory, mill, church, school, hall, hospital and enough houses for 3000 people.

    I thought we could drive over the Yorkshire moors from here, but it turns out they are about two hours away and we couldn't be naffed driving that far. Luckily there is Ilkley Moor and Rombald's Moor both of which are only a few miles away. On the way though we passed through Burley in Wharfedale and saw the Red Lion Pub which looked promising, so I got my delicious roast lunch and a bonus of Jam Roly Poly for desert.

    Finally dragged our full bellies away and found the Cow and Calf a very windy mountain top on the Ilkley Moor, and then Rombald's, a heather and bog moorland at the end of a windy steep road!    Weiterlesen

    Our last full day in the UK. Do we drive to York or take the train? The train won and good decision, Abby dropped us off at the station and it was much faster than driving, even with changing trains at Leeds. We were there in less than an hour.

    What a nice city York is, beautiful York Minister, The Shambles, The city walls. We visited all of these and had a great time just wandering around the older part of the city.

    Some friends of ours are coming to spend the night on our driveway in their motorhome. We had a lovely evening catching up on each other travel adventures. Theirs much longer than ours, they have been travelling for seven months in their motor home.    Weiterlesen

    After arriving in Denmark last night, took a bit of trail and error too figured out how to get into the city on the train. Nice quick trip and the train station was only a couple of blocks from the hotel.

    We had a bit of a walk around the city in the morning and then Joanna, Amalie and little Erik came to pick us up.

    The girls had organised a tour through some of the palace rooms for us, so after negating the Downton traffic and finding a park we made it there. The changing of the guards had just finished a little while ago which was a good thing because only a handful of tourists were left.

    The tour was in Danish that day but the girls did there best to interpret as much as they could and it was wonderful to see all the staterooms and receptions areas. So ornate with beautiful tapestries and painting everywhere.

    One peculiar room was highlighted in gold and Erik couldn't get over it, he kept throwing back his head to look at the ceiling. Then he found his voice and figured out he sounded nice and echoy in these big rooms. After about five minutes the security guard asked if one of the girls would take him out. Poor little man I didn't think he was that bad. But he will have a good story when he's older. Only six months old the first time you're chucked out of somewhere.

    We waved to Mary and Frederick on the way out, saw the lights were on so I'm sure they were watching. We were all starving by then so off to find some lunch at the gorgeous Nyhavn. Beautiful area on the canal with lots of restaurants and cafes. Too cold to sit outside today though!

    The girls are great company and even though Copenhagen is not really their normal stomping ground, they did really well to keep us entertained with bits of history and fun facts!

    We had to fight the afternoon traffic to get back to Horby where Amalie lives and we are staying for the first two nights.

    It's so lovely after 7 weeks to have someone else do all the organising everything for you. We're very happy to sit back and let Joanna lead the way.    Weiterlesen

    The girls had another great day planned for us. We are off to see the cathedral in Roskilde , and then to see the Viking Museum. But first we have to get Millie off to day care and have a delicious bacon and egg breakfast.

    The Roskilde Cathedral is a very important church for the danish people. 20 kings and 18 queens are buried here. As well as Harold Bluetooth who the Danish designer took the name for the now famous Bluetooth! It looks very modest from the outside, but on the inside there are lots of alcoves coming off the main part of the church. The architecture and decorations are amazing. So much history for the danish people. The present queen has designed her own crypt ready for her funeral, with stone from the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Its a bit of a question at the moment whether her prince will be buried with her or not.

    The girls were fascinated and we had a lovely time reading about all the kings and queens of Denmark. Erik even managed to keep himself under control this time as well although there was just as much gold in this church. Luckily the church closes for lunch at one o'clock or we might still have been there.

    There are some pretty buildings in the area around the Cathedral and we found a nice cafe there for lunch.

    After lunch we were off to the Viking ship museum. They found five Viking ships in the harbour here in the sixties and have reconstructed them like a big jigsaw. All five boat have also been replicated and are anchored in their little harbour! They are on display at the museum along with lots of other relics found in the area.

    There is a rope display where they show you how all the ropes were made, a carving section and a boatbuilding area where they are still making Viking ships there today and Graham tried his hand at carving. Think he's missing the shed!

    Legoland

    Today we went to lego land. Who knew it would be so much fun.

    We picked up Johanna's uncle and then her Mum, Dad, Aunty and Jonas came to join us just after lunch. 8 adults in a kids theme park. Hot dogs, beer, train rides, roller coasters, dragons and mini land. Everybody's happy place.

    Back to Johanna's Mum and Dad's for dinner with the family. It was a delightful evening!    Weiterlesen

    Rain Day Touring

    We all slept in a bit this morning in Vejle thanks to the great dinner and lovely company last night.

    It's a totally different day today, grey and raining. We went for a little driving tour of town and a walk around the harbour with Pia and David. Some brave souls were out in the rain with us but not many. There is a lovely gated forest in Vejle and we walked through there, just in time to see the deers being feed. I haven't seen a wild deer yet and these are technically wild although they do have a fence around their very large forest, and someone to come feed them every day.

    On then to Smorrebrod lunch at a typical Danish restaurant with Johanna's parents and Aunt and Uncle. Smorrebrod is different toppings on rye bread. I had the curried herring which according to everyone was a brave choice... Um had me a bit worried, but it was delicious and they were all so proud of me for eating it.

    Off for a couple of hours drive up to Jonas's parents place in Hunstrupvej near Thisted. Lovely place in the country with dairy farms, grain farms and small crop farms all around. They had cake and coffee waiting for us and then we went for a quick drive before dinner to see the worlds tallest windmill! They were over 200 meters tall. Huge, and they had a great display building there explaining how the windmill works and how it's made!

    Back home then for a 3 course beautiful dinner Jonas's Mum had ready for us. Oh my goodness we have had some beautiful food and tonight was no exception!    Weiterlesen

    Sunny Day Touring

    Goodness we are being looked after well in Denmark. Another delicious breakfast and then a trip to Henning's brother in laws place to see their Windmill. Sounds like an odd thing to do but Karson owns a share of this windmill and was going to take us up to the top for a look.

    Graham and I climbed into the little lift and Henning, Karson and Johanna's climbed the hundreds of steps up the ladder. We felt really bad especially for Johanna's, she doesn't like heights and it was such a long way.

    It was absolutely amazing! Karson opened the hatch on the top and we could stand up there and watched the blades spinning around. It was such a beautiful day we could see for miles. Then there was a hatch in the floor and he opened that, yeah I didn't like that one so much. 100 or something meters straight down yikes!

    We'd passed a dairy the day before, Jonas told us belonged to his Aunt and Uncle and was fully automatic. We wanted to have a look so they rang them up and off we went for a tour of the dairy. The cows come in, get washed, feed, then milked, washed again and then are let out for the next one. All the data goes on the computer to see how much milk each cow is producing, how many times they are being milked, how much feed they are eating. Incredibly efficient!

    Henning and Randy came for a trip over to the Thy National Park with us, it's on the coast and is all grass and heather covered dunes down to the ocean. Beautiful! We spent a few hours there, walked on the beach, had some lunch, watched the surfers.

    The kids had been listening to our music so driving back to Silkeborg that evening, Johanna and Jonas gave us an education in Danish music. We couldn't understand most of it but catchy tunes and they had a great singalong. Keep us all amused on the way home.    Weiterlesen

    So this morning we are in Silkeborg at Jonas and Johanna's. Nice relaxing morning and a walk around the lake and a bit of the town.

    Jonas is in navigation training while we are here, and today his flight goes over Silkeborg. So we had to be at a certain spot at a certain time to watch them fly over. It is only a little plane and they were flying really low, was very exciting actually, they wagged their wings at us when they saw us waving.

    We went off to find some lunch and have a look at the church they're getting married in. At the end of the square and beautiful of course.

    Jonas come home about two and we took a trip out to Aqua which is an very small zoo Johanna works at some times. Good deal because she got us all in for nothing just in time to watch the otters being feed. They are so cute and so greedy!

    Then off to visit Himmelbjerget, Sky mountain. There are not many mountains in Denmark and this one is a big hill really but beautiful views out across the river and we'd taken a picnic so we enjoyed the views with our cake.

    Johanna is making us a special soup tonight from potato, pesto, bacon, tomato and some vegetable which none of us could really figure out what it was in English. Jerusalem Artichokes, the root of the sunflower surprisingly enough. Delicious with a few wines and scrapbook memories of South America. Great night!    Weiterlesen

    Going to Aarhus where Jonas will meet us after his navigation test. They told him yesterday it's a shame he wants to be a rescue swimmer, he should continue on with navigation. But he wants to join the rescue team.

    First of all we visited Joanna favourite Deer Park, beautiful big park with all the trees starting to change colour and lots of deer around. Weird sound the deers make calling to each other.

    Then off to lunch in Aarhus Street Food. Looks like a dump from the outside but cool place filled with lots of containerised kitchens inside an industrial building.

    Aarhus old town is a preserved historical town and we had a lovely couple of hours wandering around there.

    We met Jonas , who had passed his test with flying colours and had hot chocolate and coffee. We were going to have dinner at a roof top bar but the rain put a stop to that but Jonas remember a restaurant that had just opened and had good reviews. Kod it was called, means meat, ha ha no wonder he remembered it.

    Great choice though it was beautiful and the steaks were nearly as good as home!    Weiterlesen

    Egeskov Castle

    Had the loveliest last day for our trip today. We went to Egeskov Castle in Odense. It's technically not really a castle. Was owed by a Count and his family. They have done a superb job of displaying their home plus all the extra museum showrooms for cars, bikes, merchandise, Not to mention the surprises in the attics, the gardens and Tatiana's Palace!

    Very bitter sweet goodbyes to Johanna and Jonas this afternoon. We could not have asked for a more warm hearted welcome then we've had from this lovely young couple and their wonderful families! We only hope they will all come and visit us in Australia so we can repay them in kind! Xx    Weiterlesen

    Home again!

    Arrived back home yesterday around fiveish. Got a surprise with the kids waiting at the airport! So lovely to see everyone! Agape and Geoff had the place look lovely, everything mowed and cleaned! Looking forward to a few restful days in our own bed!Weiterlesen
