230m in the sky, panoramic views of Tokyo. We could see famous landmarks such as Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower, Mt Fuji. Enjoyed a nice iced mocha and lemonade at the cafe, then went to the rooftop. It was closed when we first arrived due to poor weather, but opened while we were there.Read more

  • Harajuku... again!

    September 22, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We loved it so much that we had to come back. Also, we missed out on MiPig Cafe last time so had to come for it. We spent 30 mins sitting down in a room full of little piglets. They were really cute and loved sitting in our laps for scratches. There was one bully pig called Boris who demanded all the attention and would bite the smaller pigs.

Then got a 10 yen coin for 600 yen (lol), and a glazed strawberry and grape skewer for lunch.

Also bought some new shorts and chopsticks. Shorts are really hard to find here because they're going into winter season. Most shops only sell pants despite the 30+ degree weather!

  • Joypolis

    September 22, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

We had seen this arcade online called Joypolis and I really wanted to go! It had an indoor rollercoaster and 4D movie experiences that flip you 360 degrees. But the queues were up to 60 minutes so we didn't really get to try any of the good stuff. But it wasn't a wasted trip - we tried Frankie's childhood favourite, Dippin' Dots, and she scored two soft toys from the claw machines!

Then we went to the nearby mall and found a really good restaurant for dinner. $60 for 8 small plates of food to share (including 2 plates of sashimi) and 2 alcoholic drinks!

  • Arrived in Osaka!

    September 23, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

It was sad to leave Tokyo. Our accommodation was really sweet and we had finally got the hang of the different train lines. But now we've moved onto Osaka for the next 6 days.

Initial thoughts are it looks a lot more suburban here. Many more houses than apartments, and a bit more greenery compared to Tokyo. It's strange - they've got random crops in between houses.

Osaka's main airport is a man-made island so you have to catch a dedicated train to get onto the mainland. Pretty cool!

Our neighbourhood is pretty cool. Tried out a hash brown burger at the nearby Burger King. Our hotel has a Family Mart inside it where they sell super cheap alcohol! Also a nearby restaurant was selling lemon sours for 50c during happy hour!

Located on level 31 of the 32 levels in this hotel. Watched a little bit of sumo wrestling on live TV before heading out for some shopping in the evening.

  • A quick visit to Dotonburi

    September 23, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We planned to go to Dotonburi just for an hour or so because we were both quite tired... but we ended up staying for 4 hours because it was so cool! It's just a looooong street filled with shops.

There was a bridge that we walked over that was packed with people. There were LED billboards everywhere - it's like the Times Square of Osaka. There were street performers too.

I found a cool comic book store that sold comics for $3 each! I got one for Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, and One Piece. We also found the world famous Pokemon Centre at the top of a 9-storey mall, and the Pokemon Cafe which sells Pokemon themed food.

I also bought a nice top from GU that has a Kuribo on the front, and some socks with Blue Eyes White Dragon on!

Then we got some Japanese cheesecake which is super fluffy. The difference with this one is that it has raisins at the bottom for an extra bit of sweetness. I think it's delicious, Frankie doesn't like the raisin part.

  • Formula 1: Suzuka Grand Prix

    September 24, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

    What a hectic day!!!

We had to catch a 2hr train from Osaka to Shiroko, then a 15 min bus from Shiroko to Suzuka. The race started at 2pm so we thought we'd try to catch a 9:30am train get us there at a leisurely time of 12pm, allowing us some time to explore before the race started... Well! All the trains were fully booked meaning we had to catch a later one at 10:30am.

Once we arrived at Shiroko at 12:30pm, it was F1 fan central! Lines as long as the eye could see. At this point we made the best call possible which was to pre purchase our train ticket back to Osaka. All but two were sold out, so if we had waited any longer, we may not have had a way to get back home!

At Shiroko, we asked a conductor how long it would take to wait in this line for the bus to take us to Suzuka Circuit - apparently 2 hours! At this point it was 12:30pm, so waiting in line for the bus would have definitely made us late for the race.

Ok, Plan B was to walk. The walk was 1hr 15mins, so in a perfect world, that would get us there just in time for the race. So off we went on our merry way down the yellow brick road towards Suzuka. We met a Dutch couple along the way who were nice to talk to as we walked (although they supported Red Bull 🤮). But soon into our trek, the hot sun was beating down and sweat beads were dripping in places that were not thought possible. We had to come up with another solution.

Here comes Frankie to the rescue. Frankie decided to start knocking on random Japanese people's car windows and ask them if they could give us a lift up the hill. On the third attempt, a lovely man agreed to take us up the hill to Suzuka. So here we are, four sweaty F1 fans and a Japanese man who hardly knew any English, driving the remainder of the way in beautiful air con. He was really nice, and we all chipped in some cash for his troubles.

When we arrived at Suzuka, we followed the lovely Dutch couple, because why not? They had been to the Circuit the day before, so surely they knew which way to go. Nope. They took us the wrong way, so all the time we had saved by hitchhiking was probably then lost again by walking away from the main gate rather than towards it.

We finally got into the park around 1:45pm and the hype started to build. Billboards with drivers' faces, announcements over the loud speakers, merch stores. We went to a few merch stores because we really wanted to secure some Mercedes and AlphaTauri gear. We actually missed the start of the race because of this, but weren't too fussed as the race was 2 hours long anyway. I got a Mercedes and AlphaTauri shirt and hat each. Unfortunately Franks missed out on any of the merch she was after.

Instead of going straight to our allocated area, we went to the Ferris wheel instead and did two back to back rides. It was actually a really awesome viewpoint, and was a really good decision in hindsight. Just a quiet booth looking over the whole track, and especially on the last corner before the home straight. I tried listening to some live commentary on my phone too, but the signal was weak so it was patchy.

Then we went to our allocated area to watch the race, but it was quite hard to see. We got there later than everyone so there weren't many good viewing spots left. But we paid for the cheapest seats so that was to be expected.

The cars are just insane. They go so fast, but even maybe more impressive is how quick they decelerate before the next corner. I can't imagine the force that would be on their heads and necks as they go around the corners.

We decided to leave the circuit about 20 mins before the race ended. We didn't want to end up in a 2hr long wait like at Shiroko Station. So we only had to wait about 5 mins this time for a bus back to Shiroko, then we had already purchased our ticket back to Osaka. A cruisey 2hr ride home back to Osaka... what a day!

So glad we got to come to this race. That's definitely a bucket list item ticked off. Was so cool seeing the actual drivers in their cars. Lawson, Tsunoda, Verstappen, Hamilton, Leclerc, Sainz, Russel, Albon, Alonso, Piastri, Norris. And so great to see Liam Lawson do well today! Just out of the points, but great race which hopefully gets him a seat for next year! Spoiler alert, Max won.

  • Round 1 Arcade

    September 25, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Today was a lot more relaxed. We were overdue for a laundry run so spent the morning washing our clothes. It took over 2 hours because the dryers were so slow so we didn't really get to explore until 11am.

First up today, we went to Round 1 Arcade which is a 7-storey gaming palace. Each floor is dedicated to a different game. We spent most of our time on the lower floors which were claw games, casino games, rhythm games, and fighting/racing games. The upper floors also had bowling, darts, table tennis, and pool, but we didn't try those.

The casino games were fun. I spent about $10 and received about 180 fake gaming tokens to "gamble" with. It's just for fun. At the end, I had way more tokens than I started with. Since I'm not a resident, there was no point in saving my coins for next time, so I just gave them all to a lady who had helped me earlier in the day.

It was actually pretty overwhelming inside. There's just too many games to choose from, and you could easily sink hours and hours at this place. Frankie stayed for about an hour then went shopping. I stayed for about 2 hours before catching up with Franks.

  • Homemade Ramen Cooking Class!

    September 25, 2023 in Japan ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

This was such a cute experience. Keiko picked us up from the train station near her house and took us back to her home for our cooking class.

Our first course was gyoza (Japanese dumplings). She had pre-made the dough, so we just had to assemble the pork mince filling and craft the gyoza into shape. It's a lot harder than it looks! First you have to roll the dough out into small circles, though ours looked like rounded squares and four-leaf clovers 😂 then pinching the dough around the filling to secure the gyoza in a nice little parcel. Fried with a little bit of oil and water so that they steam through but also get nice and crispy on the bottom. Served with soy sauce and rice vinegar.

Main course was the ramen! 😍🍜 Frankie's flavour was miso ramen with pork mince, butter, and corn. The broth was made from bonito fish flakes and kelp, then mixed with oils and sauces. Keiko made the miso paste herself 10 months ago. My flavour was soy ramen with chashu (slow cooked pork) and bean sprouts. The broth was made from sardines and kelp, then mixed with oils and sauces. She also added a half teaspoon of her homemade Yuzu pepper which was delicious and strong. She encouraged us to slurp as much as we liked, and we both ate the whole bowl!

She also served us a homemade lime cocktail which she had made fresh using lines, sugar, and honey, diluted with ice and soda water.

Dessert was ohagi which is a seasonal dessert, only served in September and March. It had a mochi rice centre wrapped in white bean paste. Frankie made a matcha flavoured ohagi with gold flakes on top, and I made a black sesame ohagi rolled in sesame seeds. Making these was also a lot harder than she made it look!

Then we finished the evening with a traditional tea ceremony. We added matcha powder and boiling water into a bowl, then mixed and passed it to the person on our left. Once they had drunk their bowl, they made a bowl of tea for the person on their left, and so on. We had to hold the bowl in a particular way and mix the matcha in a particular way. I'm not really sure what we were doing and why we were doing it, but it felt very traditional and respectful.

What an awesome night! So glad we got to experience this!

First time using a shinkansen (bullet train)! I didn't realise how long they are. There are carts for reserved seating, then there are free for all carts. We spent about $25 each for a one way ticket which was pretty expensive since we were only travelling one stop to Kyoto. But worth it for the experience 😊

It only took 15 mins to get from Osaka to Kyoto. The train almost got to 300 km/h! Almost as fast as the F1 cars 🚄

  • Tea Ceremony

    September 26, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

When we arrived in Kyoto, the first thing we had booked was a traditional tea ceremony. It is all about being respectful to one another and finding enjoyment out of the simple things in life, such as the sound of flowing water or the taste of matcha tea.

We dressed up in kimonos. Mine was just one robe and one belt. Frankie had two robes on and three belts! Traditionally, you would sit on your knees, but for foreigners it is too uncomfortable so we could sit cross legged.

The ceremony starts with the host cleansing all the equipment for the tea service - bowls, ladles, spoons, etc. Then she serves the tea to each person. We bow to one another to show respect, then drink the tea, making sure to make a loud slurp on the final sip.

We met some friendly Americans from DC. Also in our ceremony were some rude Israeli people 😂

  • Arashiyama Monkey Park

    September 26, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

We hiked for about 30 minutes to the top of Arashiyama Mountain to the Monkey Park. We weren't expecting it to be so steep and hot! But it was great fun. The monkeys just roam free. It's as if they have always lived here, then humans came and turned it into a tourist attraction. But it doesn't seem bad at all. The monkeys still have the whole mountain to roam free. And they had plenty of shade and water, not to mention the unlimited free fruit and nuts that tourists can feed them. We chose not to feed them as we didn't want to risk a bite or scratch!

They were very cute! We stayed for about 30 mins, then we were on our way back down the 160m descent!

  • Nishiki Markets

    September 26, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

We spent the afternoon exploring Nishiki Food Markets which are famous for the many seafood stalls. We probably walked for about 2 hours from stall to stall.

    We ate:
    Wagyu beef skewers
    Omurice (omelet on rice)
    Apple flavoured Snoopy pancake
    Strawberry mochi
    Yuzu and honey juice drink

The seafood looked interesting! But we weren't daring enough to try.

We also walked past a foot spa where tiny fish nibble at your feet! This looked too fun not to try, so we paid about $11 each for 10 mins in the spa. The fish instantly start pecking at your feet and go non stop the whole 10 mins. And they really get into the cracks! It feels like a constant fizzing, as if you had put your feet in a bath of really bubbly champagne.

  • Universal Studios Japan!

    September 27, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Second to last day in Japan and we're spending it at USJ. We thought it might be a little less busy on a weekday but no, still packed as. • Hollywood Dream - Backdrop

    September 27, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

First ride of the day! The estimated wait time said 80 mins, but we waited closer to 100 mins for this one. This ride has a backwards option which is the one we chose. They run two normal rides, then a backwards one - so our line was moving a lot slower.

This is probably the scariest ride I've ever been on (so far). It's a backwards roller coaster so you never know which direction you'll be going next. There weren't any upside down sections but it was fast and had sharp turns. Also my seat was a little loose, so on the sections where we went over a hill, I'd float up a little bit. Also our feet weren't touching the ground which made feel pretty unsecure.

They are very strict with phones and not taking videos on the rides here! Some rides they even put you through a metal detector before entering the ride.

The JAWS ride was a chill boat ride. You ride through various scenes dodging sharks and explosions. There is one part where a whole oil rig is ablaze with real fire! The best part though was the over enthusiastic boat driver. Couldn't understand a word she was saying but you could get the gist from her acting out the same surprised reactions for the hundredth time 😂Read more

  • The Flying Dinosaur!

    September 27, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

This was by far the best ride I've ever been on! It was a decently long roller coaster but with a twist. Instead of facing forward in your seat, you face down towards the ground. So some parts you are facing the ground, some you are facing the sky! Full faith in the harness! Definitely felt a bit wobbly after this one.Read more

I didn't get any photos of the ride, but I got plenty of the Minions Township. The street was done really well with Minions everywhere you look. The ride was a 4D movie that had you going through the Minions laboratory. It felt quite immersive but was pretty tame lol. Fun but not worth the 80 mins wait time.Read more

  • Harry Potter World

    September 27, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We did two rides here. The first was The Forbidden Journey which was incredible! It was a 4D experience but you rode through different Harry Potter scenes. Some were in front of a big concave screen so you were fully immersed into the scene. Other scenes were through mechanical parts where snakes, spiders, dragons, and dementors would fly around you. And the transition between screens and mechanical was near seamless. We had a fast pass for this, so no waiting.

The second was Flight of the Hippogriff. The wait was 80 mins and it was definitely not worth it! The roller coaster was very tame and only lasted 10 seconds!

Then we ate at the Three Broomsticks restaurant and had a roast and butter beer - delicious!

Then we walked around Hogsmeade fashioning our newly purchased wands. Frankie bought the wand as Harry Potter and I bought the same as Professor Snape. There were 8 locations around Hogsmeade where you could cast a spell and interact with the environment around you. Familiar spells such a Wingardium Leviosa to make a quaffle ball float, Incendio to make a fire, and Alohamora to make the gate unlock.

A really cool area of the park, and one of the greatest cinematic rides we've ever been on!

  • Last day in Osaka!

    September 28, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Our final afternoon in Osaka was spent shopping around Ebisu-Bashi Bridge and Dotonburi. I snagged a couple cheeky purchases - a fancy Lego set of the famous Japanese "wave", and I bought a Nintendo Switch!

I had sold mine earlier in the year because I didn't use it much and wanted a bit of extra cash... but now, after visiting Super Nintendo World and riding the rides, I want to play the Super Mario games again.

So I purchased a console, two games, a case, thumb sticks, and a screen protector, all for about $560. In NZ, the console itself is priced at $620. So waaaaaay cheaper to buy here. I wasn't going to at first until Frankie pointed out what a bargain it was.

Then we went home to pack. We only have 25kg allowed in our suitcases each and we have done so much shopping that we were way over that. We had to cut some of our unnecessary stuff to make the weight limit. Extra baggage is $170 for an additional 5kg so we definitely don't want to have to pay for that! Our bags are currently sitting around 24kg each to allow for scales inconsistencies, then we have shoved all our snacks and lollies into our carry-on luggage. If we are overweight and need to dump any kgs, we can easily dump some snacks and lollies at the airport.

Once the bags were packed, we went off to dinner for our last night in Osaka. Ramen and fried chicken to round off our Japanese leg of the trip - no better way.

Off to Phuket tomorrow. Hope the weather's good!

  • Arrived in Phuket

    September 29, 2023 in Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

It was a rushed morning leaving Osaka, but overall pretty smooth! We got to the airport via uber and train, and had plenty of time to do our check-ins at the airport. Kansai International airport is so big that we had to catch a monorail from the main terminal to our departure terminal!

The total travel time was 11 hours with a 2 hour stop at Singapore airport. I started to feel unwell with a runny nose and headache on the flight which wasn't fun! But picked up some meds at Singapore airport which helped a little. Singapore airport was nice! Also a huge airport but luckily our arrival and departure terminal was the same.

When we arrived at Phuket Airport, we went through customs and immigration really quick. Just had to scan out passports and fingerprints then straight through. We thought we were special because we had a taxi waiting for us and a lady standing with our names on a board. But when we walked outside the airport, there was literally 100 other people with names on boards. Must be a common thing here!

We also got our Thailand SIM cards here. 500 THB which is $25 for 25GB data at 5G speeds, then unlimited 4G thereafter. That would cost over $100 in NZ!!

A 45-min trip over to the wharf and a 15-min boat ride to our island later, we had arrived at our accommodation. The staff are really friendly and welcoming. The pier was lit up with beautiful lights at night. Our room had flowers and towels in the shape of swans on the bed. It was lovely to come to this after a long day travelling. I think this is going to be a great week in Phuket!
