  • Pont du Gard Provence France Sat 16 Sep

    16. september 2023, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Up at 6am, breakfast 7am. Left the Le Pont Face West hotel about 8.30am and I drove to Pont du Gard. This was the first time I have driven left hand drive. Arrived around 9.30am and took photos.. The Pont du Gard is part of the Roman aqueduct of Nimes . It was built around 50AD to transport water from a spring near Uzes towards the city of Nimes up until the 6th century. We took the 10.30am tour of the aqueduct on the top of the bridge. Lots of detail in French and an English summary. In the middle ages when the Roman stone was being taken from the aqueduct the Pont du Gard was spared as people wanted to use the middle level bridge to cross the river. Left around 11.30am to drive towards Carcassone. Purchased petrol at a Narbonne Carrefour self serve and pay petrol station. E10 95 octane petrol was around 1.95 Euro per litre ($AUS 3.50 per litre maybe). Had lunch in the adjacent shopping centre and purchased groceries in a COSCO like Carrefour shop.Les mer

    17. september 2023, Frankrike ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

Up at 6.15am. Dark and cloudy day. Breakfast in Richard’s and Karen’s modern B & B Carcassone unit around 7.15 am. Left after 8..30am. There was a couple of hours driving through very rural countryside on French “D” roads. We had to detour when a bridge was out in a village and the laneways to leave the village were very narrow. The road beyond was patched single width tar marginally better than dirt for a while. We eventally arrived at the first Carthar castle we planned to visit around 10.45am. The Chateau de Peyrepertuse ruin in the Languedoc-Roussillon
French region, was a Carthar Castle originally part of a Catalan county which joined the county of Barcelona in the early 12th century but was captured by the French in 1240. We walked around and explored the site and ate cashews and grapes for morning tea before leaving around 12.30pm. Drove to Chateau de Queribus in the Languedoc-Roussillon region which we skipped due to high wind and cloud obscuring everything on arrival. Lunch at a cafe/pub located in the Maury village in a wine region in the valley below.

French Catalonia Mon 18 Sep 2023
Woken up by the roosters in the small farm next door at 5am and got up. Others got up after 7am and we had breakfast. Left the traditional French Airbnb in Chemin de Laborite Foix in the Ariege department French Occitanie region around 9am for the Grotto de Niaux in the Ariege Department French Occitanie region. We managed to get into the 10am tour to see some 16,000 year old prehistoric drawings in a horizontal limestone cave system. The guide took us to the Salon Noir (Black Chamber) which was about 850 metres into the cave system. We were first shown a panel containing a series of hyphens, sticks and dots. Red oxide and manganese oxide were used to make the red a black colouring. Inside the Salon Noir we were shown drawings of bison, horses, ibex and a stag which may have been the local favourite prey of the Magdalenian communities that made the drawings. These animals had a very strong symbolic meaning to Magdalenian people. The majority of these drawings were sketched in charcoal and then painted over using a manganese dioxide based black paint.
,After about 2 hours we emerged from the cave and drove down to the valley and lunch at the village of Niaux in the Ariege department French Occitanie regionfor a steak roll with chips in a paper bag and cake on a plate with knife and fork. Left Niaux in the Ariege department French Occitanie region after 1.30pm and drove towards our accommodation in Villefranche-de-Conflent. On the way we drove through a very long toll tunnel at L’Hospitalet in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department

    18. september 2023, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Arrived at our Air B & B accommodation at Villefranche-de-Conflent in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of the Conflent French Catalonian region around 4.30pm. We walked to the village to buy groceries and to my surprise found a walled town with fortifications on the UNESCO world heritage list. We located a small grocery shop for our shopping and we paid to walk the town wall ramparts. This walking tour gave us an overview of military architecture from the Middle Ages to the 19 century. Walkways were covered by roofs to hide the movement of soldiers from an enemy situated above. Bastions were built so all openings were asymmetrical to make the use of cannon against them difficult. The old town itself was beautifully preserved and was tourist oriented. We purchased food for dinner and breakfast at the grocery store and returned to our modern B&B apartment in Rue Saint-Francois Villefranche-de-Conflent for showers, dinner and to wash clothes.Les mer

We entered the Casa Batllo located on La Rambla in Eixample at 5pm. In 1903 it was purchased by Mr Josep Batlló y Casanovas, a textile industrialist who owned several factories in Barcelona. Mr Josep Batlló granted full creative freedom to Antoni Gaud and the building was fully reformed between 1904 and 1906. The architect completely changed the façade, redistributing the internal partitioning, expanding the lightwell and converting the inside into a true work of art. Besides its artistic value, the building is also extremely functional, much more characteristic of modern times than of the past.Les mer

Up at 6.45am, shower and breakfast at 7.30am. Left 9 Placa De Les Ollies El Born Barcelona just before 9am to walk to the nearby Picasso museum containing a collection which the artist donated to the city. I was pleasantly surprised at the collection which did not just contain the style Pablo Picasso is famous for. Unfortunately I could not take the backpack in and and had to leave it in a locker without locking instructions in English. So I did not lock the door. When I returned the door was locked. The staff member repeatedly stated it was impossible to open the door and it was not his problem. Other staff were less aggressive and more helpful. Someone else trying to access a locker randomly keyed 1111 and the impossible door opened. Out of the museum around 10am. Walked to Barcelona Beach and walked on the coarse sand away from the water. There were small waves breaking onto shingle at the waterline. Touts kept trying to rent umbrellas or sell coloured material to sit on. Then around noon walked back to our apartment buying bread and goodies at a Sunday market on the way.Les mer
