Back in the US and have a 'New Toy'

Hectic couple of days, Tuesday we flew out of Aberdeen to Heathrow then on to Atlanta arriving at our hotel around 11pm (Wednesday 4am UK time). Today we flew Atlanta to Fort Myers Florida then took a taxi to Tamiami Ford in Naples to pick up our new to us tow car, a Jeep Grand Cherokee.Читать далее

Wow !! What a busy few days, drove the car up from Florida and picked up the coach Friday. The RV Loft were great the services on the engine and generator we asked for had been completed and they were just finishing the sanitisation of the fresh water system including new water filters. So we were good to go..... a few yards round the corner to Atlanta Commercial Tire to replace 2 rear tyres which were a few years old and showing signs of dry rot. A couple of hours later and we were really good to go. In at the deep end driving in convoy round Atlanta Friday afternoon, traffic was horrendous with kamikaze drivers everywhere.
Now we're settled into the campground and been food shopping, so now we can explore and relax. Temps are in the 80s F and humid, we are still acclimatising.Читать далее

Bikes stowed in Jeep

Tuesday & Wednesday were spent at the RV dealer getting the tow system set up on the Jeep. Successful tow back to the campground yesterday, relief that all went well.
We've extended our stay at the campground and so need to move sites today. So secured the bikes in the Jeep with bungees and there's still plenty of room for hiking gear, chairs and shopping.Читать далее

Stone Mountain

Been in the coach a week and this is our first day doing touristy stuff. Destination, the top of Stone Mountain, not via the easy route on the tram, but on foot. A steady climb with some really steep bits near the top, but it was the heat which made it tough going, we're just not used to it in Scotland. Temperature was high 70s F and sunny. Great views of Atlanta on one side and on the other our campground in the trees by the lake & golf course. We're amazed at how many trees there are in the east coast states.Читать далее

Stone Mountain Park Historic Center

Visiting the park today, wandered round the Historic Square, buildings date back to the 1800s. Then on to the attractions, mainly for kids, and finished with a ride round the mountain on the railway. We're treated to a show halfway round at the old town.Читать далее

After dinner at the Commons restaurant at the golf club we went to the evening lasershow at the Confederate Memorial Carving, which depicts three Confederate heroes of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Great show starting & ending with fireworks.Читать далее

Arrived Tuesday and the temperature has been hot, hot, hot (90s F). Drove out yesterday for some retail therapy, we needed summer clothes and air conditioning !! Gander Mountain (closing down sale) and Dicks provided both.
Today we're going to the water park next to the campground, just as we were going out the door the heavens opened accompanied by thunder and lightning. Rivers are running through the campsites into the lake, which is turning a lovely shade of brown !!Читать далее

What do you do when it's nearly 100F out ? Head to a honky tonk bar or few on Broadway for some cool beers and great music. Roberts Western, then Tootsies and finally, our favourite, the FGL (Florida Georgia Line) House. Stew's Amy Winehouse shirt was the talk of Nashville today !!Читать далее

Mammoth Cave system is the longest in the world (405 miles and growing) and is a World Heritage Site. At the visitor centre we picked up trail maps, booked a couple of cave tours for later on in the week and looked round the exhibit. Then had a great hike through the lush forest down to Echo River which flows out of the cave system and back up via the Mammoth Dome Sink Hole. Hitchhiker butterfly joined us for a while on Stew's head. Feeling the heat with temperatures in the 80s F.Читать далее

Mammoth Cave Historic Tour

10:00 tour, mid 70sF above ground it's a cool 54F in the cave. We walked 2 miles along passageways that rivers used to flow, through huge dome rooms, up and down stairs, through narrow Fat Man's Misery, low Tall Man's Misery and past the Bottomless Pit. Mammoth Dome was impressive with columns which reminded us of Arbroath Abbey ruins, the climb up was 155 stairs, strange to think we were at the top of this at the sink hole yesterday. Interesting to see the writings on the wall and ceilings of the past people who had explored and worked the caves with only reed torches for light.Читать далее

Cool Springs Church - Mammoth Cave NP

Drove out for a recce after the tour and crossed the Green River Ferry (very efficient and free). Round the Maple Springs Loop we stopped at the trailhead parking and walked out to Cool Springs Church and Cemetery. These are the only signs left that the National Park was once populated with small communities. It must of been a hard life as so many of the graves were of people in their 20s and 30s and infants. Domes & Dripstones Tour - Mammoth Cave

10 minute bus ride to the cave entrance - a metal door which was locked behind us. Brilliant tour squeezing and ducking our way single file down a long low narrow staircase into the heart of the cave. Lots of big and small boulders litter the sides of the path where the roof has fallen in, it's very stable now so they say !!! Then a long passageway with smooth sides where the river carved out the cave. Highlight was at the end, down more stairs to Frozen Niagara, stalactites, stalagmites and columns where they join in the middle. Loads of cave crickets on the ceilings and walls near the exit.Читать далее

Cedar Sink Trail - Mammoth Cave NP

Hiked out to the Cedar Sink Hole through the forest. The river flows out the bottom of the high cliffs. Layers of rock take us back in time to old seabeds laid down millions of years ago. Stew rescued a tortoise which had fallen down the metal staircase.
Back at the coach a female American Goldfinch took offence at her reflection in our bedroom window.Читать далее

Louisville Kentucky is on the Ohio river and we're staying at Louisville North campground in Indiana on the north side of the river, confused ?? Parked at the Waterfront Park and walked along the river past the paddle steamer the Belle of Louisville to downtown. Coal barge heading upstream was 4 barges long pushed by a tug. Visited the Muhammad Ali Center, a fitting tribute to a great man. Robe in the photo was given to Ali by Elvis. Then had a wander back along Main Street, with its old buildings, back to the car. Temperature very pleasant high 70s F.Читать далее

Buffalo Trace Distillery - Frankfort KY

We're in bourbon country and we picked a excellent one to tour !! Buffalo Trace has been known by many names over the years and has been in operation non-stop for over 200 years, even during prohibition, it was one of four allowed to produce for "medicinal purposes". Our tour guide Fred was a great storyteller and knowledgeable. Went into a building where they were hand bottling Blantons bourbon, then into Warehouse D, built 1907, where 19500 barrels are ageing gracefully. Great video on the making of bourbon and history, interesting fact, the barrels were sent by barge to New Orleans. End of tour tasting in the visitor centre rounded off the tour nicely. Tasted Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare and, as passionate Scottish Malt Whisky (no 'e') drinkers we were very impressed. Purchased a bottle of each, a box of bourbon chocolates and, of course, the obligatory cap for Stew.Читать далее

Smallest bonded warehouse built to hold the millionth barrel, now holds number 6 millionth with number 7 due around the end of the year. Barrels are stacked 3 high on all floors, windows open to regulate temperatures.Читать далее

Bourbon on Main Frankfort - KY

We went downtown on a mission to find some of the extra special bourbons, the lady at the visitor centre recommended Bourbon on Main, looked like a regular house, but in we went. First tasting was a Blantons, which we saw being bottled, next was a 10yo Pappys Rip Van Winkle a real treat. The food here was pretty good too, baked crab dip followed by taco quesadillas.
We then took a walk along Main St and back along Broadway, Frankfort is a pretty town People were sitting outside bars and we enjoyed the sidewalk bluegrass band and a dram of Elmer E Taylor bourbon before heading home.Читать далее

Relaxing 2 hour evening cruise on the Belle of Louisville paddle steamer. Temperature is in the mid 80s F and the breeze on the upper deck is cooling. Great views of the city and its many bridges.

Arrived at the fairground for the Monaco International rally which starts 5th July. Parked on grass which is a bit soft after heavy rains the last couple of days.
Already met up with Dan & Mary Beth, Pete & Marci and Mike & Babs, who we met at the rally last year. We've been invited to join their group Monaco Travelers who have lots of interesting tours & meals planned for the next few days. So let the fun begin !!Читать далее
