    Lesson

    November 24, 2017 in Bolivia ⋅ 🌫 5 °C

Oké. Now we really have learned our lesson. We left 2 hours in advance of our flight and came too late because the traffic in La Paz was crazy! We arrived 35 min in advance. In Copenhagen they always let us go through the fast lane, so we make it in time. But in South America they are not so so flexible haha..

For the last 4 years we fly almost once a month and now we act like we are taking a bus. Well, that needs to stop now haha!

Luckily they just changed our flight to one day later and we don't need to pay extra. We slept in a terrible hotel next to the airport, but we slept really deep, 8 hours in a row because we were so tired.

Now we have 12 hours to explore Lima, before we take the plane to Madrid!

We found out that the Dutch/Spanish couple that we met in Puno, is on the same flight (how coincidence!)

    El Alto

    November 21, 2017 in Bolivia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We arrived at 6am in La Paz on Tuesday, after a 10 hour drive from Uyuni (the south of Bolvia, where we were on the border with Chile). Nacho and Iris didn't sleep much, because they were used to better buses (and Iris had to pee but the toiletdoor couldn't open haha). Roos and Juul slept good because their previous bus was even worse than this one. So when we came to the Wild Rover Hostel (which is a crazy party hostel), we decided to sleep some hours. We rested and felt ready for the day.

We already did a free tour in La Paz, so we decided to make one in El Alto, which is a city next to (almost connected to) La Paz. It has 2 million people (La Paz only 1 even though it looks huuuge). It is really high, therefore called, El Alto.

We went to the witch market, where they sell dead baby lamas for sacrifices, they read your life by coca leaves and many more creapy stuff.
They really believe in a lot of things. When you "destroy" pachamama (mother earth in Quechua language), you need to sacrifice something. Small houses, animals. What do you think they do for skyscrapers? Yess, a human. Freaky right? They intoxicate a homeless person and when he is so drunk, they will burn him alive and put his ashes under the ground of the building, that is going to be built. It is so scary, but true. Superstitious in Bolivia! Pachamama.

We took the telecabine up to this city. There are 5 in the entire city and transfers thousands of people daily. It is their way of transport, a metro is not possible to built in this city that is built in a valley.
The telecabine is a present from the government and offcourse built by an Austrian company. Sometimes bit scary for Iris, but in general really cool.

The cemetery is in La Paz, it is the biggest in Bolivia.

Salar de uyuni: part 2 - the other world

    November 19, 2017 in Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We started the second day visiting couple of blue lagoons (situated 4200m above sea level). There we saw different species of flamengos and birds.
After an amazing lunch seeing one of the flamengos lake we drove to "another planet". We visit the national park of "Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Avaroa" were we found amazing landscapes like a huge red lagoon, geisers inside of an old volcano's crater . It was so cool to see all these things.
We finished the day in the best possible way , after dinner we walked from our hostel to some hot springs were the water was at 39° meanwhile the outside temperature was around 0°!! From the hot springs we could see the sky full of stars. We saw falling stars and got a lesson from Jaime about the sky constellations ,it was amazing!!

Luckily after a good night of sleep Nacho felt better and he enjoyed the day a lot.

    Salar de Uyuni: part 1

    November 18, 2017 in Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We went for a 3 days tour, starting in the city of Uyuni, one of the most important minery cities of south America. We were in a 4x4 car with our great guide Jaime, a couple from Tunisia, Juultje, Ross, Nacho and me.

The first day we drove through a salt desert for hours were we took of these funny pictures . We passed part of the route of the Dakar rally, went to a cactus Island in the middle of the salt dessert, see a beautiful sunset and sleep in a salt hotel to finish the day!! Nacho felt sick due a food infection, that is why he was mainly in the car and not in the pictures!

    Bolivia

    November 17, 2017 in Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We are so sorry that we have been so disconnected from the world the last couple of days!

Thursday we arrived to La Paz, really late in the night. You can see that Bolivia is a poor country. There are barely paved roads. We didn't knew that we would arrive so late, we took lunch at 12:00 and arrived at 23:00 without any food! We didn't had snacks with us haha.. oopsie!

Then we arrived and since La Paz is a big city we decided to go straight to the hotel, cause it was night and probably dangerous.

So we went to sleep without food, diet day for us haha!

The next day we visited the city and did a free tour. There is a big Dutch community in La Paz, quite funny. Friday night we flew to Uyuni, the south of Bolivia. We met with two friends of Iris, Juliette and Roos. They are from her study period in Utrecht. This picture is of Saturday morning before the tour starts.

    Traveling

    November 15, 2017 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Tonight we watched the game peru-new Zealand. It is something big here, there is not another thing on the TV and everyone speaks about it for the last week. The last time they were on a world cup was 36 years ago. Luckily and after suffering a lot, Peru won the second game and qualified for the world cup in Russia!! The city is crazy, like if they won the world cup! Way too much haha.. the government even gave all the people a day of for tomorrow!

We saw the game with Adela and Johannes. We met them yesterday on the bus to puno and we spend all day with them today in lake Titicaca. She is Spanish and he is Dutch, so we have a lot in common :). They are around 37 years old, but really open minded and friendly. We speak a mix of Spanish, English and Dutch.

This is one of the coolest things of traveling, meet new people to learn about their culture, habits, language, etc.. we love it!

    Lago Titicaca

    November 15, 2017 in Peru ⋅ 🌙 6 °C

We woke up really late today, at 6:00 (haha). We went by boat over the lake, just a small part though, cause this lake is huge.

Lake Titicaca is the biggest lake of South America and the highest lake of the world. The lake is 3800 meters high. It is on the border of Bolivia and a small part of this lake is in Bolivia. The capital of the region is Puno.

We visited the floating islands. To create this islands the local use the roots of Acha (kind of big and strong grass) and tight them together with natural ropes. Every 15 days they need to put a extra layer of Acha so it stays in good condition. Their houses and boats are made of the same material. They do not speak Spanish but Aymara here. This families live really primitive and work in communities. They catch fish and trade it in the land for potatoes and corn. In each island can live up to 6 families. The community in total consists of 120 islands and 1000 persons.

We also visit another island a the lake, this one was natural, We made a trekking there and eat trout fish for lunch, which was made by a local family and catched in this lake. It tasted great.

    Cañon del Colca

    November 15, 2017 in Peru ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

We woke up at 3am(yes, so early) to take a bus from Arequipa to an area called Colca valley. We passed through an area 4800m above sea level were was snow. Once in the view point of "la Cruz del condor"we could see a lot of condors flying above us, it was spectacular!! The andinian condors are the biggest bird in the world, they can reach 3m wingspan and fly over 6000 m above sea level.

After that, we ate an amazing Peruvian ceviche and took a bus to Puno, a city next to the lake Titicaca. On the way we passed through a natural reserve where we saw flamengos (didn't know they could live in cold weather above 3800m) and a wild vicuña. This animal has the finest wool in the world (even better than cashimire). And it is not domesticated by the people, so we were really lucky to see it.

You can see the difference between a Llama, Alpaca and Vicuña, by several things. The neck of the Vicuña is shorter and more leaning towards the front, also the ears all smaller. The colour is always the same, light brown and a white belly. The eyes are big and black.
