  • Day 118. Honfleur, France. Omaha Beach.

    3 Mei 2025, Perancis ⋅ 🌧 59 °F

Stop #2 today was at Omaha Beach, where one of the bloodiest battles in history took place. This is where the Americans came ashore on D-Day. 10,000 soldiers were killed that day. There's a monument and a recently placed sculpture. The Omaha beach sculpture was created to honor the brave men who sacrificed their lives in the hope of restoring freedom to the people of France. "3 elements: Wings of Hope-so the spirit that carried these men on June 6, 1944 continues to inspire us, reminding us that together it is always possible to change the future. Rise-Freedom! - So that the example of those who rose against barbarism helps us remain standing up against all forms of inhumanity. Wings of Fraternity - So that this surge of brotherhood reminds us of our responsibility towards others as well as ourselves. On June 6, 1944, these men were more than soldiers, they were our brothers." These are words we should reflect on at home....Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 120. Greenwich, England.

    5–11 Mei 2025, Inggris ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

We're on the River Thames moored on a pontoon in Greenwich, just outside of London. We walked around the town and visited the old Naval College grounds. The Painted Hall was amazing. The ceiling was painted by Thornhill beginning in 1707 and took 19 years to complete. It was restored in 2013. They've had many official events in this hall. Admiral Lord Nelson laid in state here Jan  5-7, 1806. They moved Royal Navy College to Portsmouth in 1988.
We also visited the chapel that was rebuilt after a fire in 1779. There was also a Skittles court with 2 bowling lanes. Afterward, we walked up a very steep hill to tour the old Royal Observatory. Coincidently, we were there for the military flyover for VE day.

  • Day 120. Greenwich, England.

    5 Mei 2025, Inggris ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Visited the Old Royal Observatory. The Royal Observatory was moved to Cambridge in 1988. This is where the method for finding longitude was established. In 1714, the British government offered a 20,000 British pounds reward (worth more than $1M today) for anyone who could find a "practical and useful" method to determine longitude at sea because ships constantly went to incorrect destinations. (This is why many countries were discovered.)  John Harrison, a clock maker,  spent the next 45 years developing sea clocks that could keep time correctly.  From this, longitude calculations were developed.  Harrison's H-1 through H-4 were displayed here.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 121. Highclere Castle.

    6 Mei 2025, Inggris ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

Viking added a Highclere Castle tour for the remaining 100+ passengers who are continuing on the World Cruise to New York. (600+ passengers' cruise ended in London today.) The tour was fabulous. We stopped for lunch at the Penney Hill Hotel and 2025 Michelin award winning restaurant for a delicious buffet lunch. We had time after lunch to walk around the 125-acre property. They have the largest rhododendron bushes I've ever seen. They were in full bloom.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 121. Highclere Castle.

    6 Mei 2025, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

I was so excited to visit Highclere Castle today. Downton Abbey is one of my favorite TV series, so it was so cool to see the rooms where filming took place. Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to photograph anything inside the castle.... We saw some of the 250 rooms, including Lady Grantham's bedroom, Mary's bedroom where the Turkish guy died in her bed, Sybil's bedroom, the family room, and dining room with the table that has 14 leafs that can be added. Each bedroom also had a dressing room where their maids could help them dress. Sybil's bedroom had a beautiful rocking horse in it. The kitchen and servants' dining room were filmed on a set, so we didn't see those areas. Unrelated to the show, the current residents are the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. The Countess met us when we arrived and took a group picture with us in front of the castle. This Earl's grandfather's real claim to fame was that he found the tomb of an ancient Egyptian Pharoah that had a lot of gold and valuable artifacts. So the servants' quarters and kitchen were converted into display rooms of the artifacts and gold that he found. Most were replicas because the originals were sold to museums to pay the taxes that the Earl owed after his death.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 123. Dover, England.

    8 Mei 2025, Inggris ⋅ 🌬 55 °F

Today's tour took us to Canterbury to see the cathedral and other historical sites. This is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. However, there currently isn't an archbishop because he recently stepped down because he failed to take legal action against his priests who were abusive to children. The cathedral is huge and beautiful. We didn't get to see very much of it, but I was still very impressed with it. Several of us were able to "sneak" inside by telling them we wanted to go in to say a prayer in honor of today, VE (Victory in Europe) Day. So I got a couple of pictures, but nothing like I had hoped. There also were a lot of shops up and down alleys and streets.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 125. Dublin, Ireland.

    10 Mei 2025, Irlandia ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Part 1. We went to the Causey Farm to learn about Irish farm life. We drove through Dublin as we left the city. The first thing we did at the farm was make our own brown Irish bread, and they baked it while we toured the farm. Then we learned an Irish dance that they use for ice breakers. It was a lot of fun. Afterward, we watched a sheep herding demonstration by one of their border collies. Then we walked around the farm and saw geese, pigs, alpacas, cows, lambs, turkeys, ducks, horses, and lamas. Then we went back to the dance shed and learned to play their ancient keltic drum, the bodhran. Finally, it was time to sample our brown soda bread and eat lunch. They served our bread with butter and jam, delicious Irish stew and scones with cream & jam. On the way to the farm, our guide told us that Ireland has a huge dairy & beef industry. The climate is perfect for making the grass green and rich with nutrients because of the limestone and beta keratin. That's why their dairy products are so good (Kerigold butter).
Hurling is #1 sport here, so we received a demonstration prior to departing.
Apartment complexes (especially older ones) have identical fronts, so "they paint the doors different colors so that when you come home after drinking 18 pints, you can find your home. We have a strong drinking and partying culture here, ya know, " is how our guide described the homes as we drove through Dublin. We noticed various colors spray painted on the sheep's coats. We were told that sheep are marked by farmers to identify their sheep. Guinness beer and triple distilled whiskey are their specialties.

  • Day 126. Holyhead, Wales.

    11 Mei 2025, Wales ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Today's tour went to Beaumaris, where we walked around the town and an artisan bazaar. Then we toured the Beaumaris Castle, which is the largest castle never finished because King Edward ran out of money. Though not finished, we could still see the many defensive features of the castle. The hour-long coach ride to and from Beaumaris showed us some interesting sites such as the Menai Suspension Bridge that stretches across the Menai Strait.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 127. Liverpool, England.

    12 Mei 2025, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Day 127. Liverpool, England. What else would one do in Liverpool but be a Beatles groupie.... We walked around the city this morning while waiting for our afternoon excursion to learn all about the Beatles. The first thing we encountered was a large Beatles monument. We walked down several side streets and found several Beatles souvenir shops, as well as lots of restaurants, pubs, and shopping. The 1st stop on the tour was the Beatles Story Museum. Our final stop was at Strawberry Field and then they took us around the city to see the houses where the Beatles grew up. Our tour guide knew so much about the Beatles and had a lot of trivia for us:
"Hey Jude" is about Julian Lennon because he was so sad about his parents' divorce (John & Cindy, John's 1st wife). John wrote a lot of songs about his life. So Paul decided that since John wrote about himself, that Paul should do the same. "Penny Lane" is about Paul's childhood. As a kid, he went to a barber shop on Penny Lane, and the things he heard and saw there had a large impact on his life. So the barber shop and an insurance office named "Strange & Stranger" nearby are referred to in "Penny Lane": "In Penny Lane, there's a barbershop showing photographs of every head he's known...." and "And then, the fireman rushes in from the pouring rain. Very strange...."
"Pretty young nurse selling flowers" was John lennon's friend's girlfriend (so that's how they knew John wrote that line).
"Do you wanna know a secret? Do you promise not to tell?" was about John's marriage to his 1st wife, Cynthia, at 36 Catherine St. where they were secretly married.
John lived with his Aunt Mimi bc his mom was "bonkers."
They were named the Beatles not because of the bug but bc of the word "beat" (as in music).
"Arnold Grove" was George Harrison's pseudo name when he reserved a room at hotels. It's also the street he lived on growing up. 🙃
Paul stays very involved in Liverpool. One of the things he did was establish the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts for grades 4-12, and he goes back every year and hands out the diplomas to the graduates. I could go on & on, but that's enough.

  • Day 130. Kirkwall,Orkney Is. of Scotland

    15 Mei 2025, Skotlandia ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

We're in the Orkney islands of Scotland.
Sheep and beef cattle (black Aberdeen angus) are their primary economy. Only 4 dairy farms here because they don't make as much money for their dairy products as beef.
Originally, Orkney was ruled by Norway, then  Scotland took over approx 500 yrs ago.
Neolithic Orkney is a UNESCO World Heritage site. We visited the Ring of Brodgar (similar to Stonehenge in England). This dates back to the early Bronze Age. The stones come from at least 7 different locations here in Orkney. They think there were 60 stones originally, but there are only 36 remaining. 21 are still standing. Some people say the stones were moved by placing them on seaweed or rolling them on smaller rocks, but nobody really knows.

  • Day 133. Stavanger, Norway.

    18 Mei 2025, Norway ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

We couldn't dock in Lerwick Island to see the Shetland ponies because of extremely high winds, so we came here to Stavanger, and it was a great substitute! This port has lots of shops and restaurants right at the port. We decided to skip the tours today and just walked around on our own. We found a nice Italian restaurant with a big brick oven, so we had pizza. Then we walked down the street for a nice cold beer. This quaint town would be worth coming back to visit.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 134. Bergen highway scenery

    19 Mei 2025, Norway ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

We learned a few things on the way to Dale of Norway. Norway averages 240 days of rain per year, so again, we are very fortunate. Sunny and 74⁰ today. Bergen used to be the capital of Norway; now, Oslo is the capital of Norway.
Land of 1,000 tunnels, and we went through at least 20 during our 1 ½ hour ride.
Bergen is called the city of mountains - 7 mountains surround the city.
Red & yellow colors of paint were easier to get in the early years, so most houses are painted yellow or red. White was more expensive, so higher social class families had white ones.
17th of May is Constitution Day, a big day in Norway.  Parades, etc. People wear their traditional folk costumes, bunads, which are usually handed down in the family. You can tell which region they're from based on the color of the bunad. (Bergen is blue).
Oil, fishing, and tourism are the top 3 industries in Norway. Here are a few pictures from the drive to the factory and the downtown Bergen area, which was a short walk from our ship.

  • Day 134. Bergen, Norway.

    19 Mei 2025, Norway ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

We're in Bergen for 2 nights. I went to the Dale of Norway Sweater Factory today. It was a very interesting tour. Dale of Norway Factory (since 1911) used to have 1,000 employees; now 100, due to automation. Started making sweaters with cotton. Now they use merino wool and a combination wool called "new wool." She suggests that you hang sweater outside (but not in direct sunlight) to freshen it up instead of washing it. This wool can hold water and it rolls off. It's fire resistant & slightly wrinkle resistant.
Dale started supplying olymipic wear for Oslo Olympic games in 1952 and have made them for World Games and Olympics since then.
Machine-made sweaters hold their shape much better than hand knitted ones. Each year, they create a new pattern, and it takes about 3 months to get the pattern correct with the machines. They only assemble 10% of them here. They ship the rest out for assembly.
These machines can knit about 640 sweaters/day.
They told us never to use fabric softener and never put them in the dryer. They are odor resistant, so you don't need to wash them. If stained washed by hand and stains come out very easily.

  • Day 136. 3rd day in Bergen.

    22 Mei 2025, Norway ⋅ 🌬 43 °F

Trish and I did an early tour of a Gold and Silversmith factory today. Its name is Arvin, meaning Heritage. It's the largest gold & silver manufacturer in Norway. The CEO explained a lot about silver and the company's origin in 168, so over 150 yrs of experience there.
Sidenotes: she says it's Ok to put sterling silverware in dishwasher, but not the knives bc they might split from the heat. But if the handles are filled with sand, it's OK bc sand wont expand from the heat. If handles are filled with cement or anything else, heat might cause the knife handles to split open.
Did you know the cheese slicer was invented by a Norwegian because their cheeses are so hard to slice?
She showed a picture of their National Costume, called a Bunad, (worn for holidays and special events). It includes sterling silver pieces that go with it and costs about $10,000. That's why they're handed down from previous generations. This factory makes the pieces that are part of the Bunad. It was a great tour.

  • Day 137. Ålesund, Norway.

    22 Mei 2025, Norway ⋅ 🌬 43 °F

I had another superlative day of seeing the fjords in Ålesund. The steep mountains falling into the fjords were incredible. I'm used to seeing the Pennsylvania mountains as they gradually go higher and higher, but these fjords make for an entirely different experience. I took 273 pictures today and could have taken 273 more! The views were spectacular, even though we had a few periods of short rains. It was 9⁰C brrrr.  Here's a bit of history first: they had a major fire in 1904 that resulted in a mix of art deco and other styles. The fire was caused by an oil lamp that fell over.
Boating is their main hobby, and most families have their own boat. Cod, herring, monkfish, and mackerel are the primary catches.
Drove through many villages, including Borgan, Sjøhlt (church from 1800s), Valldol, and many more that I can't spell. They can't grow grains such as wheat because they get too much rain here.
We saw a salmon farm and salmon ladders that the farmers built to help the salmon swim upstream. Salmon farms are pretty controversial here, but I'm not sure why.
Although we started the day with a light rain, the sun poked through periodically, and the views were spectacular.  Beautiful scenery; just like being back home and driving through the mountains of PA.
We ended with a tasty buffet lunch at Nilsgardstunet and a local Troll beer.
