Day 127. Liverpool, England. What else would one do in Liverpool but be a Beatles groupie.... We walked around the city this morning while waiting for our afternoon excursion to learn all about the Beatles. The first thing we encountered was a large Beatles monument. We walked down several side streets and found several Beatles souvenir shops, as well as lots of restaurants, pubs, and shopping. The 1st stop on the tour was the Beatles Story Museum. Our final stop was at Strawberry Field and then they took us around the city to see the houses where the Beatles grew up. Our tour guide knew so much about the Beatles and had a lot of trivia for us:
"Hey Jude" is about Julian Lennon because he was so sad about his parents' divorce (John & Cindy, John's 1st wife). John wrote a lot of songs about his life. So Paul decided that since John wrote about himself, that Paul should do the same. "Penny Lane" is about Paul's childhood. As a kid, he went to a barber shop on Penny Lane, and the things he heard and saw there had a large impact on his life. So the barber shop and an insurance office named "Strange & Stranger" nearby are referred to in "Penny Lane": "In Penny Lane, there's a barbershop showing photographs of every head he's known...." and "And then, the fireman rushes in from the pouring rain. Very strange...."
"Pretty young nurse selling flowers" was John lennon's friend's girlfriend (so that's how they knew John wrote that line).
"Do you wanna know a secret? Do you promise not to tell?" was about John's marriage to his 1st wife, Cynthia, at 36 Catherine St. where they were secretly married.
John lived with his Aunt Mimi bc his mom was "bonkers."
They were named the Beatles not because of the bug but bc of the word "beat" (as in music).
"Arnold Grove" was George Harrison's pseudo name when he reserved a room at hotels. It's also the street he lived on growing up. 🙃
Paul stays very involved in Liverpool. One of the things he did was establish the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts for grades 4-12, and he goes back every year and hands out the diplomas to the graduates. I could go on & on, but that's enough.Okumaya devam et
