    Cosy Corner Chalets

    14 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Decided to head off from Albany a day earlier and knock off a few k's as the track goes past Cosy Corner where we were staying. Had coffee with Greg and Denise, Judy and Julie before Lloydy and I headed off around 9:45. Did 36kms before girls picked us up. I don't think I ever want to see another wind farm again. Gravel track joining turbines had so many hills and a bit of corrugation so sweated buckets. Rewarded shortly after with great downhill single track and also through low lying area where there were numerous bandicoot. Good ride and rewarded by lunch and a few frothies at Boston Brewery.Early runs on the board for the Munda Biddi pool comp with Lloyd suffering a demoralising 2-0 defeat. Bring on Denmark!Читать далее

    Denmark

    15 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Completed the trip to Denmark leaving Cosy Corner around 8:30 and arriving at the Blue Wren Youth Hostel around 1:15. Unfortunately Lloyd picked up a small leak( not the vegetable) and we had to pump the tyre up every few kms. Fixed the tyre at Denmark. Rode about 48kms today averaging around 16kph. Stopped off at Youngs Siding for a coffee and a chat with nearly every local that passed by. Also had lunch on the Hay River- great camping spots. Really lovely ride along the ocean front on the Heritage track. Looking forward to a cold beer at the Denmark pub. $25 for a lamb roast and a glass of red- bargain. Perfect way to spend Lloyd and Judes anniversary! 2nd round of pool played more like bowls as huge slope on table - after 2 long games two balls failed to return and an honourable 1-1 draw was called.Читать далее

    16 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Left Denmark at 8am after a sweet lamb curry pie and coffee at the bakery (that's the Pie Shop,Tim!). Lloyd had a vege pie and a baby chino- it's only the 3rd day and he's already starting to turn! The first 10ks down to Ocean Beach was a dream downhill and gave a false sense of security as to what was to come. Another bloody windfarm with hills to match- I'm fast going off renewable energy. There were some pleasant moments- the coastline between Lights Beach and Greens Pool was magnificent but we were punished with a couple of mongrel hills. Anyhow we made it 51kms at average 13.2 kph. 5 others were at the hut when we arrived - they're part of the Bike Force riding group that we used to see every Saturday morning at Leapfrogs.Читать далее

Very glad to get to the hut around 2:30. Great first 38km to Kent River but within the next 16km there were long stretches of very soft sand - some of which you couldn't ride and we had to push the bikes a fair bit. Consequently our average speed dropped to 12kph over the 54kms. Kent River was very nice. 11 people in hut tonight so ear plugs will be a must.Читать далее

    Walpole

    19 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

The toughest day so far- started at 8am and arrived into Walpole at 3:45. 5 hrs riding time and 55 kms covered. Started with patches of sand and then countless hills. In between there was some nice single trail through the tingle trees near Valley of Giants and went past a really nice recreation area at Monastery Landing. Looks like we may stay 2 night's just to refresh.Day of rest was spent cleaning bikes, washing cycling gear, changing tube in front tyre of my bike, doing inspections of the bakery ( twice) and two games of pool a steak Santa and a couple of coldies at the pub. Both feeling much better.Читать далее

Great ride from Walpole. Just over 30kms and only 2:15 riding time arriving at 11:30 after leaving the Walpole Bakery just after 8:15 following consumption of the obligatory breakfast pie and coffee. Lloydy is feeling much better now and has ventured into skinny lattes now. Today's highlight was the Starbucks Recreation Site that had some pretty elaborate artwork set in the Karri forest. Yirra Kartta Hut

    21 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Nice ride today. Started with 4km uphill towards Mt Franklin to warm us up as it was only 1 degree at 6am. From then on mostly downhill and a lot of single track some of which reputably goes through Tiger snake country. But we got through unscathed aside from multiple scratches from the bushes. Another warm one today (33 deg.) which was surprising as I thought the temperature was supposed to drop. It looks like there will be a full house tonight at the hut. I counted 21 including us. Dropped into Fernhook Falls but devoid of much water- but looked like a nice area.Читать далее

    Northcliffe

    22 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

A bit of drizzle last night kept the overnight temperatures up and settled the dust. The Defence Force guys were up at 5am as they were pushing past Northcliffe and camping in the bush. I may have mentioned we were heading to a comfy bed, hot meals and cold beer a few times which was met by the obvious response. Ride was good and mainly on good gravel roads. A bit hilly but average speed was just under 14kph and the 48km ride took 3.5 hrs riding time and we arrived at12:30. We are staying at the Northcliffe Pub even though it is closed today I think we are the only ones here. Rode 2km to the Workers Club ( I had to explain the concept of work to Lloydy but not sure he understood) and after a great Chicken Parmigiana and a 2-0 thrashing of Lloyd on the pool table we rode the 6km home- yes i dropped my bike lock about 100m from the club and only noticed it missing qhen we got back to the pub!Читать далее

Fantastic 44km ride through the Karridale Forrests with mixture of gravel road, single track and old rail formation. Lazy 9am start after cooked breakfast at the Naughty Noodle with a young country girl, Hayley from Ravensthorpe who was doing the Bib track. Arrived around 2pm after 3:15 riding time averaging 13.7kph. The last section up to the Gloucester Tree was a 3km series of switchbacks going up 100m in elevation and we were both relieved to get to the top. Along the way we came along a very old bridge at River Road with some good camping spots. The old timber bridge was only for ped traffic and even bike riders had to dismount although I do know of one rider ( whom I can't name for legal reasons) who rode over it- see photo's. All in all great riding weather and good day passing 400km milestone. Dinner at Pemby pub with pork roast and a 2-1 pool win to Gary courtesy of Lloyd sinking the black ball in the wrong pocket. That's 3 up to date.Читать далее

One he has missed was in Northcliffe. After riding back from the workers club 2ks out of town, at 8.30 pm pitch black,he proceeded back to Walpole instead of Northcliffe. 24 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

A little cold this morning but soon warmed up when we had to ride back up the hill from the caravan park to find a Cafe that was open. Fortunately bakery was open and warm inside so a lux brekky wrap and a coffee and we were on our way around 8:30. Weather was again very good although there was a reasonably strong easterly blowing and I would say it was the first time we'd noticed any substantial wind- but that would be underselling the impact the eggplant massaman curry we had in Northcliffe had on our digestive systems! Rode mainly through the forest and had to ride over a bridge under construction on a section of path that apparently was closed- Lloyd is a bad influence! We also had to walk through the bush to get around a tree that had fallen right across the path- i thought we could move it but with Lloyds shoulder....Also had a chat to a German guy going south and a couple from Victoria walking through the bush. Good day- 40km, ave 12.8kph and around 3 hrs riding time. Staying in 2 rooms let by the lady( Dale) who runs and lives next door to the Quinninup tavern - location, location, location!! Manjimup

    25 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Another chilly morning after bacon and egg sanga for breakfast at Dale's house in Quinninup. A lot of climbing to start which soon warmed us up and as we climbed I'm sure I could see the hand of God reach down to me but then he saw Lloydy and said " on your way you two!" A bit biblical, I know but the delirium of another hill must have kicked in. Anyhow after the first 20ks was mainly uphill we were at last rewarded with a good run into Manjimup arriving just after 12 with 3hrs riding time and average mid 12kph. Nothing spectacular on the way through a bit of plantation Forrest and crossing the Warren River. First stop in Manjimup was the bakery and 5 minutes later Julie walked in obviously overcome with emotion after not seeing me for nearly 2 weeks.( or maybe just a hot flush). Spent the last night at very good Indian restaurant, Cilantro and then crashed a 60th party at the Gatsby Skyline, a really quirky cabaret lounge. Probably went a bit hard considering the ride next day but they had a Japanese couple do a couple of songs in Japanese and then a band led by Michael Vdelli, who was probably the best guitarist i have ever seen. Not surprisingly Trev knows him.Читать далее

    Donnelly River

    27 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

A staggered start to another brisk morning. Rode 150m for coffee and toasted sanga and then after saying a 2nd goodbye to Julie and Judy we did another 100m before the impact of the coffee meant another sudden stop. Finally we got on our way and we had a very nice 47km ride to Donnelly River with gentle grades with the munda biddi following large parts of the Donnelly River and old rail embankment. Riding time 4hrs and ave speed 12.5kph. The path also took us past Deanmill and One Tree Bridge where Lloyd was clearly in awe of the early pioneers and in particular the Roads Board in overcoming physical challenges, opening up the State and bringing the communities together, which Main Roads continues to do to this day- Lloyds words not mine! (Or something very similar). Met a few people travelling in the opposite direction including four people from Mt Darragh in NSW where Lloyd had his farm. Also dropped in to have a look at the Karta Burnu hut about 20kms from Manjimup.Читать далее

    Nannup

    28 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

A little bit of overnight rain in Donnelly River kept the morning temps ok and what seemed a pretty easy ride turned out being a long climb and then corrugated road for the first 25kms. The track followed some old rail alignment and then an old stock route past Willow Springs that looks a really nice camping spot suitable for caravans. Thankfully, with a deadline to get to the pub to watch the footy the last 1kms or so was nearly all downhill on bitumen so we made it into Nannup by 12 so a quick trip to the bakery, check into pub ready for game to be told it was a delayed telecast and started at 2;30. Oh well I'm sure there's a nice comfortable spot near the bar to wait. As it turned out another Eagles loss but importantly Lloyd met a lot of people he knew from his family's days in Nannup and whilst the names didn't mean much to me - I'm pretty sure with the info collected i won't have to buy a beer for quite a while!! All good people and a very good afternoon at the pub. Also met Lyndon Crouch who runs "Out and About free range chooks- happy chooks living in caravans!! Pool score- GP 2- LC 0Читать далее

    29 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Nice morning again and started with bacon and egg pie( Lloyd had the quiche) and some coffee before riding the 27km to Jarrahwood , that has a population of around 12. Ride was probably the easiest so far following entirely the old rail alignment making the grades almost non existent. We only did 1:45 riding time and averaged 15kph. Passed about 3 separate groups of riders heading south and met them all almost concurrently. We elected not to stay at Nala Mia but take up the offer of 2 beds and a hot shower at Mark and Helens place. Mark is the local Fire Control Officer. Had a fair bit of time to kill so wandered around the old townsite and mill. Water supply is right down with only about 3 weeks of water left. Hopefully there is a bit of rain coming in tonight that might helpЧитать далее

    Donnybrook

    30 апреля 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Interesting ride from Jarrahwood- not particularly hard in term of climbing but some soft sand and a lot of rocks that made progress relatively slow. The country is incredibly dry with most dams largely empty. That being said we did the 47km and were lining up at the Donnybrook bakery just after 12 for the obligatory curry pie. Unfortunately we couldn't check into the hotel until after 3pm which became 4pm because someone hadn't turned up but spent that time talking to a young guy, Shan from Melbourne who was doing the Munda Biddi heading south and was covering around 100km per day. Anyhow we're finally checked in, clean and ready to tackle the rain predicted for tommorrow. Remiss not to mention we both had the "famous" prawn pasta from the pub and highly recommended- suggest pairing with 2 pints of Pirate Life Pale AleЧитать далее

    Nglang Boodja Hut

    1 мая 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

We dodged another day of rain which is great for us but bad for the countryside which continues to be very dry. The day started with a bit of concern as our bikes were locked inside the bar area of the hotel and despite assurances that there would be someone opening up at 7 there was no one there until 7:30- the easy solution would have been to give us the key to the bar but not quite sure why they didn't think of that. Anyhow we said goodbye to our Melbourne mate, Shane and another guy, Paul who knows Arthur Phillips and was visiting friends in Boyanup and after a little sustenance from the bakery we headed off around 8:30. For me it was not an enjoyable ride- the first 20kms was on seal up to Boyanup and then it got very hilly and we climbed around 300m. We then rode along the scarp and it would have been a nice view but everything was dry. We did stop off at Crooked Brook Rec area which was a nice area but no water in the brook or dam. Tried a couple of different modes of transport but alas flat batteries. Very happy to get to the hut and looks like we'll be the only ones here which will be good as it is the smallest we've encountered. Rain finally arrived at 3:30pmЧитать далее

    Collie

    2 мая 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Overnight rain but what looked like a reasonable day. Lloyd commented there was a patch of blue and despite a refreshing splash when you rode through a wet bush the patch of blue followed us for the first 10kms or so past Honeymoon Pool and up out of the Collie River. Having negotiated a very steep switchback section up a hill the sweat was soon replaced by, at first a few drops, then lightning and thunder and then for the next 3 hours what could only be described as a deluge. I think Collie had 35mm of rain. We took shelter from the rain and lightning twice, once in an info bay and the second someone's front veranda. In the end we bit the bullet and rode on and the path was more like a stream. About 8ks to go there was a dual use path all the way into Collie which was fantastic except for the large puddle adjacent to the cemetary that came up to our axle and "filled our boots"! Despite this we rode on some great trails and you just couldn't help laughing everytime the puddles got deeper. It is one day on the ride that we will never forget. Thankfully we got straight into our accomodation, the showers were hot, lamb shanks and they have a free washer and dryer.Читать далее

    Yarri Hut

    3 мая 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Thankfully woke up to a grey sky with patches of blue and after a short deviation to the bakery ( which i must confess I am starting to follow Tims lead and call it a pie shop) we set off. It is amazing what a difference the rain has made to the forest-the undergrowth was moist and everything smelt fresh (coincintally i didn't have to follow Lloyd roday either which may have contributed to the fresh air. We did 43kms today and aside from a few pinchpoints the grades were moderate and we were off any major roads so a most enjoyable ride. Arrived at Yarra Hut at 12:30 after 3 and half hours riding Hut is small (12 person)but nice outlook. Looks like sharing with 3 guys heading southЧитать далее

    Lake Brockman

    4 мая 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

After a chilly night we reluctantly shed the thermals, 2 jumpers, beanie and gloves for the Lycra and set off around 8am for the 49km to Lake Brockman which is essentially Logue Brook Dam. It was probably the toughest day we have had for over a week with lots of ups and downs on bush tracks that had been badly effected by the rain with slow going both up and down due to the scours and frequent deposits of leaf matter that acted as speed bumps. We elected to not take the prescribed burn detour which was shorter and on a good gravel road but go on the original Munda Biddi trail something in reflection was not a great decision. The track was overgrown, scoured badly and there were a few trees across the path but we were very relived when finally we made Lake Brockman after 4 hrs riding time. Worse was to come- somehow the Pies beat Carlton making me 0 from 2 in the footy tipping- c'mon Eagles!Читать далее

    Dwellingup

    5 мая 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

After a couple of toasties and coffee at the Lake Brockman we left Logue Brook on a nice fine morning. Although it was our longest ride (60km) we must have had our big boy pants on today as we both enjoyed the ride albeit the last 10 km from Nanga Brook to Dwellingup had a few nasty hills. There are a stack of single tracks and we also followed what used to be a rail alignment that ran in paralell to the Murray River south if Nanga Mill. Also went through the Alcoa mining area which may come as no surprise that Lloyd flouted the law again. We also ran on a few kms of the Alcoa access road which prompted Lloyd to remark that it was nearly as smooth as the roads that are built by Main Roads.- he's becoming quite perceptive! We also went through some Alcoa tunnels- Does anyone think that Lloyds bum looks big in those tunnels? Had lunch at Nanga Bk and came across a massive suspension ped bridge- very impressive. Anyhow very satisfying 5 hr ride arriving just before 4pm and we have now completed 877kms since leaving Albany. Late news on the pool table- another GP win 2-1 - undefeated on tour so farЧитать далее

    Dandalup Hut

    6 мая 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Woke up to a very misty morning in Dwellingup and after getting all packed up I made a safety call and said we should hold up in the Blue Wren Cafe before heading off. As luck should have it they served coffee and breakfast Lloyd had bacon and eggs and I opted for the healthy option of fruit and muesli with low fat yoghurt but unfortunately they wrote it down wrong and I was given Eggs Benedict - being the diolomat and not wanting to upset the locals i hid my disappointment and ate it. The ride was 42km with just under 4 hours riding time and presented a few challenges with hills badly scoured but there were some really nice single tracks out of Dwellingup. I did see something strange along the track in the middle of the bush- a jet black animal about the size of a dog went across the path about 40m in front and scurried off into the bush- I couldn't confirm what it was - it could have been a dog but we were miles away from any farmland. We arrived at the hut around 1:45 and the hut was on the side of the scarp with a nice view out towards Mandurah. Afternoon will be spent soaking up a bit of sunshine and relaxing before tackling what looks to be a tough day tomorrow- I'm talking about the night at the Jarrahdale pub tommorrow not the ride!!Читать далее

    Jarrahdale

    7 мая 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

I might have put the Mockers on as today's ride to Jarrahdale, whilst only 32kms was very hard, particularly the last 8km going up from the Serpentine River. It had everything, from deep scours, dreaded pea gravel and steep hills both up and down were treacherous. On top of that Lloyds crank sounds awful (there's been a lot of strange noises coming from Lloyd all trip) and he has probably done a bearing and I broke a spoke on the rear wheel. Thankfully only 100km and 2 days to go so we're crossing our fingers. Day started ok as it was fine and we went over the North Dandalup dam which I don't believe we have seen before. Anyhow we still got to our accomodation by 12 with ride time just under 3 hours. After a little mucking around getting a key the house looks good and shower very welcoming. I've got a bad case of helmet hair so hats will probably be a good option once we've finished. Big day tomorrow 57kms.Читать далее

    Carinyah Hut

    8 мая 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Super effort from Lloydy today- he not only had his big boy pants on but he forgoed his trainers as well. Lloyds crank bearings are absolutely wrecked and does not free wheel at all requiring extra effort just to pedal. He kept on muttering " i wish I'd bought the Vaseline that's twice i could have used it!" Thankfully the 55kms was relatively firm going and despite a few hills was generally rideable with ride time of 4hrs 20 minutes- arriving at the hut at 3pm. We had a good sleep at the Cottage in Jarrahdale as a result of a good feed and some special sleeping medicine administered by the publican at the Jarrahdale pub. Grabbed a couple of fresh rolls and the biggest cup of coffee I have ever seen- you could run a barramundi hatchery in the mugs! Nothing much to see along the way we crossed the upper reaches of the Canning River and not surprisingly there was no water and crossed both Albany Hwy near Glendale and Brookton Hwy causing Lloyd to once again sing the virtues of the good work Main Roads does in bringing the communities together. Anyhow I didn't think we were going to make it today so happy to spend our last night out having just clicked over 1000kms and only the last 42kms into Mundaring to go.Читать далее

    Mundaring- End of trip

    9 мая 2024 г., Австралия ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

It's over. We finished. Good start to the day. Finished off some Back Country Spag Bog for brekkie- thankfully Jude will have to put up with the side effects tonight not me! 42 km today and aside from about 5kms near Mundaring weir that was unbelievably steep and scoured badly the track was not too bad. Anyhow the bikes held out and thankfully so did the bodies. Total of 1050km over 23 riding days. Highlights of the trip were riding through the magnificent forest, the constant shrieking of the black cockatoos a sound that was mimicked by Lloyds crank bearings, fantastic single trails that got the adrenalin going, sharing the ride with a mate, lots of laughs and meeting great people along the track. Biggest mistake was swapping my light weight trousers for some thermal pants and shorts at the halfway point- it was embarrassing seeing everyone whisper " Athlete" when I walked by ( and no, Julie they weren't saying "Grandpa's off to town"). Other lowlights were the unrideable sand between Denmark and Walpole, lying on the one inch mattress in the huts for the last 2 hours waiting for the sun to come out and the dehydrated Radix Apple and Cinamon breakfast food. If anyone is contemplating a similar adventure I would remind you that there is a perfectly good highway suitable for cars that's half the distance and spring would probably be the best time to do the Munda Biddi ( Nth to Sth). Hmmm that's a thought - who knows what might happen if we were to have a few too many beers on the lawn!- Watch this space!Читать далее
