    Foothills of Mount Fuji

    Arrived on the night bus into Kofu and took a connecting bus to Kawaguchiko, which is one of 5 lakes on the northern side of Mount Fuji.
    Pouring with rain again, so dropped the bags at the hostel and picked up some umbrellas - ellas ellas, ey ey. Walked to the Mount Fuji visitor center to learn a bit. It is the most climbed mountain in the world, but is only open for a short time every year. Alas for us, we are not able to do it, without being fully self contained, which would involve us buying a load of kit then ditching it.
    After some warming noodles and lots of debate about what to do, we settled on another onsen as the rainy day activity.
    Chilled out for the rest of the afternoon in the hostel. Probably the worst accommodation so far, in terms of facilities and general cleanliness but it was only 2 mins walk from the station.    Weiterlesen

    Mountain hike around Kawaguchiko lake

    We wanted to do a walk round the mountains surrounding lake Kawaguchiko. The tourist office gave us a route, which we thought we could make circular by extending the time a bit. It was meant to take 6 hours, but I thought it would take a bit over.
    We took the lazy option up the first bit using the cable car. The views look very similar to parts of Switzerland, with pine trees and steep sided slopes.
    At the top of the cable car you get a great view of Mount Fuji. Took a few snaps and started the walk. We hiked for about 4.5 hours up to Mt Mitsutoge. Amazing views one one side into distant snowy mountains and on the other side was thick cloud so you could not see a thing.
    On our way down, the path which we were meant to be on disappeared, so we took a 'short cut' to a connecting path, shown on the Maps.me app. These short cut decisions are known in my family as a 'Teddy Tour' as my dad often navigates by maps based from 1846. Often overgrown, but always fun when you finish them.
    On this occasion we did find a path relatively quickly, but it had not been used in many years and was heavily washed away. Probably by the Typhoon a few weeks ago.
    Walking down this path we found a chap re building it, he seemed very surprised to see us.
    By this point it was starting to get dark. We found some big waterfalls by phone torch light and got back to civilisation.
    At the 8 hour point we got to within a few hundred meters of our hostel and sat down at a Pizzeria, to rest tired legs, and have a well earned beer and pizza. Job done.    Weiterlesen

    Cycle around Lake Kawaguchiko and Fuji

    Hired a couple of bikes from our hostel. Took them to the end of the road and found that Hannah's had a wonky back wheel and mine had a broken seat. Swapped them for some new ones and set off for a cycle round the lake. Lovely views and an easy 12 mile ride.
    We got back just after mid day so took the bus to the 5th station. Which is the point on Mount Fuji that most people start to climb to the top. No climbing for us, as it is only open to climb a few months of the year.
    Took in the views amongst the crowds, then found a sneaky spot higher than everyone but with no one there. Much nicer. We were above the clouds, with only a few distant mountains poking their heads through.
    After a few hours we took the bus back down the mountain.    Weiterlesen

    Another city, another sky tower

    1. November 2019 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    Left the Mt Fuji area on a bus this morning from the station right next to our accommodation - again a great location picked by Louis.
    After a 2 1/2 hr bus journey we arrived in Tokyo.
    Headed straight to our accommodation on the Metro and checked in - friendly welcome at reception and a nice clean room, pretty hard mattresses though.
    We went for an explore around the local area, Louis tried out a Japanese barber and we headed to another sky tower - we do love a good view!
    As promised great views of the city and some fun little activities on the observation deck. This time we waited to see the sun go down and had a drink looking out and seeing Mt Fuji in the back drop of the city.
    The observation deck also had a sports bar so as time had ticked on we got a beer and started to watch the Wales match. Not the best atmosphere but an exclusive view of the big screen and meant we were able to watch from the start. Shame about the result but lots of love for the Welsh team.
    Headed back towards our hotel through lots of busy streets, lined with many options for food. Decided on a rotating sushi restaurant and tried a few dishes.
    Looks like we’re in an area with lots of girl bars and men on the streets touting for business. Louis takes me to all the best places.
    Now back at the accommodation to get some sleep for another day of sight seeing tomorrow.    Weiterlesen

    Robots and Rugby Final

    2. November 2019 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    Today we wanted to experience the hightec side of Japan. We started with the Museum of Innovation. Brains were completely full within 2 hours. Two highlights were seeing the Asimo robot, amazing stuff by Honda and a projector dome showing the universe. Completely immersive and all with English translations.
    As it was getting late, we left to try to find a sports bar to watch the Rugby final of England vs South Africa. On the way back to the station, we found a massive transformer style robot next to a shopping mall.
    We found a pub next to Tokyo central station and unfortunately watched England lose to South Africa. Hannah wanted to try some Katsu curry. So I found one near home, bit of an odd process where you buy a ticket of what you want from a vending machine. Very tasty    Weiterlesen

    Yoyogi park, crossings and tiny bars

    Went for a run first thing, first run I've done in a big city. Made the rule of if the green crossing man was lit, I would turn that way.
    That got me lost enough, but using a massive 60 story tower as reference it was easy enough to navigate home.
    Decided on 72 hour subway pass. Tokyo has either the metro underground like (circle symbols) or the JR lines (square symbols). This got us on the underground, which gets you to most places.
    We went to the Yoyogi park and shrine. Although nice, it was very crowded and there are more impressive shrines elsewhere in country that we have seen.
    We wandered down to the most famous crossing in Japan, the Shibuya crossing, where hundreds of people cross every minute. Manic!
    Both feeling a bit peckish, we found an automated Suchi restaurant. Loved this! Simply tap the photo of what you want on a tablet. A few minutes later it zooms out to you on a conveyor belt. Super tasty.
    Next we went to the Akihabara area. A huge number of electronics stores and anime figures. Plastic tat everywhere.
    Still not done with the day, we went to the Tokyo sky tree. A very impressive structure with a viewing platform at 450m up. We had great views st 350m, but it was a bit cloudy right at the very top.
    One of my friends Tom Ayre sent me a message saying he was in Tokyo so we left to grab a beer with him.
    He had been recommended a few streets with tiny pubs. The pubs fitted about 8 to 12 people max, very expensive. In the final one we were in a loft space with almost no headroom. We finished at about 12.45am. Found we had missed the last subway, and only 5% left on the phone. Figured out another route back and ran to catch the last train. Stressful end to the day.     Disney Sea resort

    4. November 2019 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    Let's start by saying that going to Disney on a bank holiday. Bad idea! With many of the lines being up to 3.5 hours wait, we instantly regretted our decision to come today, should have just delayed by a day. Idiots.
    Plus with not getting to bed till 2.30am and getting up at 6.30am, meant two tired irritable people first thing.
    We hoped a bit of disney magic would sort us out. Actually the cure was food and popcorn and we managed to get on most things avoiding the huge queues. Cool attractions included the little mermaid where she was suspended in a similar way to the cameras at football matches and so can zoom around the theatre. Good engineering.
    Nice park but we have been spoilt by Florida!

    Tokyo Disneyland

    Slightly later start today as the park didn't open till 9am. Fairly relaxed day, again a few longer lines on a the main rides, but we got round everything we wanted. Finished off with Thunder Mountain during the fireworks as we thought the line would be a bit shorter. Nope. Everyone else had the same idea.

    Teamlab light show and South Korea

    Did you know that Google Maps does not work properly in South Korea?

    Packed up everything and checked out.
    On a reccomendation of a friend we went to the teamlab light show. An audio visual extravaganza for your senses. You slowly walk through different themed rooms with lights, sounds, mirrors and props everywhere. I want my house to be like that! Photos do not do it justice, but this is well worth a visit.
    Left there with all our luggage to get a train to the Tokyo Narita airport. The metro away from the teamlab area is all above ground, and has amazing views over the city, rivers and sea. Hannah got a Ramen, which she had wanted since arriving in Japan. It's got noodles and a boiled egg in and is very tasty.
    Nice easy 2.5 hour flight to Seoul, picked up a sim card then took a hour long train to Seoul central station. It was midnight by this time. The accommodation was an easy 5 min walk away. Tiny with bunk beds, but easy for the night.    Weiterlesen

    Exploring Seoul - South Korea

    Top tip. So usually to navigate around, I use Google maps and Maps.me. Google maps doesn't work well in South Korea. Walking times arnt calculated. Bus routes sometimes come up, and to get trains, you have to select it directly in the google maps settings.
    However, maps.me does work for underground and walking. So a combination of the two will get you through fine.
    We took an underground to a palace at the north end of town. Beautiful place with old buildings and ponds.
    We timed it to see the changing of the guard.
    Then walked south past 2 statues, down the stream lined with lanterns, to the tourist office. This was a find in itself. You can get free food vouchers for the local market, plus if you get a stamp from every floor in the building they gave you a free bus card. Win. Plus free booze tasting on the 3rd floor. Double win.
    From there walked through parts of the old town, to a viewing point to watch sunset. On to try and redeem our vouchers, but the vouchers were only from 11am till 3pm. Noooooo! Had this mozzarella chicken and vegetables thing, which looked great, but was way too spicy and not that great.
    I wanted to go up the sky tower, but Hannah wasnt keen. Plus my phone died, so Hannah was left in charge of navigation. Aagggh panic.
    She read somewhere about the universe it area being lively, so went with no plan of anything to do, just to turn up and see. Not much going on. But lots of bars and restaurants. Stopped in at a bbq place for kebabs. They had this auto rotating device which perfectly cooked lamb and shrimp. Another thing I want for home.
    We also tried the South Korean sake equivalent. Got us both quite tipsy quite quickly!

    Seoul sky tower and trip to Busan

    Got up, packed up and set off to get a bus to the bottom of a hill, onto of which sat the N sky tower. We seem to be (or maybe just I) seem to enjoy a good sky tower. Viewa were epic, but it did allow us to see an even bigger tower in the distance. Tower FOMO. That one was the 6th biggest in the world. Dowh.
    Back to the station to pick up the bags and get the 2.5 hour train to Busan, the 2nd largest city in South Korea after Seoul. The countryside is relatively flat compared to Japan, but still fairly hilly. The buildings on the way down were often high rise flats, which reminded me a lot of that scene from Inception where they build their own city.
    Busan seemed like a nice city, on the sea side.
    The bus to the hotel was a faff as there was only standing room and and lot of wobbling around with heavy bags.
    Hannah got in touch with a friend from home - Emily who was working close by. So we met up for some Korean food (lots of mini dishes over a cook your own bbq). Had a few beers and Soju (clear liquid, reasonably tasty, and they mix it with beer. It's about 25%. Did not realise that!). Not happy with finishing the evening there, we went to a Karaoke bar. This is actually just a private booth where they bring you food and booze. Hannah fell asleep with 30 mins which left Emily and I to keep singing and drinking Soju until it closed at 4.30am.     Walking around Haeundae - Busan

    10. November 2019 in Südkorea ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

    Almost recovered from the day before. Went to the tourist office to get some reccomendations. The man kept on giving us stuff to do in exquisite detail. Took us about 25 mins just to leave the tourist office to start our walk.
    Walked along the beach past some very impressive tall buildings, around the headland to the next bay.
    Nothing too exciting along the walk apart from a sky bridge. A walkway with a glass floor over the sea.

    At this point we got an emergency alert txt through the phone from the South Korean government. Ran it through Google translate and it said that there would be loud noise from an air show back near our accommodation. Tourism man failed to mention that!
    After a short sit on the beach, watching the air show from too far away, we bussed back to our area. We had 30 mins till sunset, and 2 hours till the rain, so walked to the opposite headland. Got some great views of the lit up bridge and skyscrapers.
    Found a cool floor painting of Christopher Reeve as superman.
    I didn't fancy any more rice, so went to a pizza restaurant. Got in just before it started to hammer down with rain, lightning and strong winds. Gorgonzola and honey! Good mix!    Weiterlesen

    Hiking, carved granite temples and fish

    11. November 2019 in Südkorea ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

    We heard about a nice hike up to a temple so decided on that for a plan. Took the cable car up to a pine forest. Signs to the temple were rubbish, so reverted to trusty Maps.me. This got us there after about 2 hours. The temple had some very intricate carvings of buddha’s in the granite rock.
    From there we walked down the hill to the subway and headed to a random culture village. The buildings were getting a bit shabby so all the locals painted them different colours.

    From there we went to a fish market. They have rows and rows of the same sets of fish, which you can buy, or go upstairs to the restaurant area and get them cooked for you. The whole floor has the same menu. After walking around and seeing all the fish, we didn’t actually fancy eating any.    Weiterlesen

    Busan to the Island of Jeju

    Took a flight from Busan to Jeju. A little island off the South West coast of South Korea. We needed a break from cities!
    An hour and a half bus took us to our most fancy hotel yet, a few mins walk from the sea. Not much time left in the day apart from taking a stroll to the sea. Missed the sunset as I took us the wrong way. Much to Hannah's delight as she said she thought we were going the wrong way. 😫.Weiterlesen

    Exploring Jeju. North and East.

    13. November 2019 in Südkorea ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

    Got up and started to check the bus times for getting to the attractions. Seems like they are not very regular! Going to be a mission to get anywhere. Probably should have checked that before leaving the airport and all the hire cars! Dowh. There were a few things we fancied seeing near the airport anyway, so bussed back to get a car.
    Not a relaxing place to drive at all. They have weird junctions where is seems to be the rule of the person being the boldest and most reckless has priority, with plenty of honking of horns. Running red lights seems to be common and if they had roundabout rules, I couldn't figure them out.
    Still, we made it to a maze attraction without incident, which was naturally a'maze'ing 😝. Took us a solid 20 mins to get round.
    Next to a lava tube cave. Literally looked like a scene out of Aliens. Luckily not a Xenomorph in sight. Up to 7m high and a long underground tube. We walked about 2km in total.
    From there we walked round an ancient forest.
    Stopped on the north coast for coffee and cake. Cake was actually bread with plastic burger cheese twisted inside. Yummy.

    It was starting to get late, so we drove east till we hit the coast, and worked our way south watching the sunset.
    Experienced more of driving fun with a digger driving straight onto a roundabout forcing the car before it to stop very quickly.    Weiterlesen

    Exploring Jeju. South and West.

    14. November 2019 in Südkorea ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

    Today we explored the south and west of Jeju. Started out with a nearby waterfall.
    Then a bit further along the coast found these hexagonal stone structures which had been formed by cooling lava. Pretty cool.
    Followed by a walk along a river and a few more waterfalls.
    Taking the advice of TripAdvisor we went to the number 1 thing to do in Jeju - a sacred garden. Started by 1 man in the 60s (now a team of 25). A peaceful place with lots of Bonzi trees.
    The man Mr Bum Young-Sun is obviously quite an astute business man. A random person asked if we would write in the visitor book. Whist we were doing that she offered us some orange tea (which was very nice). She asked if we would like the meet the main man. He came round and very kindly gave us a free book about his garden, only asking that we provide a trip advisor review. A good way to help yourself to the top of trip advisor. Still, good garden though.

    With the light fading and it getting freezing, we went for an indoor activity. Can you guess who chose this one...? An art museum with perspective art which you could pose in front of.
    Got quite a few photos of me, one or two of Hannah.
    Back home for another Marvel film, which the hotel seemed to be playing on loop.    Weiterlesen

    Walking up Jeju volcano

    15. November 2019 in Südkorea ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

    Up and out quickly to get to the foot of the volcano in the centre of Jeju. There are about 5 different routes to the top, but only 2 which go to the crater. We chose the most common route to the crater.
    We arrived at 9.15 to be told we had to be at a checkpoint by 12pm otherwise we would not be allowed to the top. The checkpoint was 3 hours away, so we got our quick march on.
    Made it with 30 mins to spare, so cruised to the top.
    Last 100m were pretty tiring, but apart from that a very nice walk.
    Lots of people up at the top including lots of the Korean army out for some training. After a snickers enjoying the view we started the walk down. Great views out over the island and interesting scenery as we descended 1000 vertical meters. Total time was 6.5 hours and about 13 miles.
    With tired feet we went to the harbour for sunset and a short drone flight.
    Back to the room for some pot noodles and a cider. I think probably the first day we actually came in under budget in the whole holiday so far.
    Early start tomorrow for a flight to Taiwan to meet up with the family.    Weiterlesen

    Bye bye South Korea, hello Taiwan

    Up at 6 to get to the airport for a 10.30am flight to Taiwan. Reasonably painless drive with only a few junctions of death to contend with.
    Flight was easy, but we did have to wait for an hour to get through immigration.
    Checked in and set off towards the Taipei 101 tower. It was once the tallest building in the world. Epic views from on top.
    Feeling super hungry we stopped downstairs for a Din Tai Fung - smashed some steamed dumplings and some blueberries. Back home for planning tomorrows activities.    Weiterlesen

    Today was declared a shopping day

    17. November 2019 in Taiwan ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

    Thank goodness our accommodation was opposite a decathelon so we managed to get all our shopping out of the way in 15mins. I got a compass and some gloves. Hannah nothing. Win win.
    So it then became a wandering round parks and ice cream day. Much better 😁.
    There are loads of parks to see in the center of the city. We then walked along the river Tamsui with loads of colourful flowers.
    Next we went to the tourist trap of Elephant Hill, which gives you fantastic views over the city. We timed it perfectly to give us a great sunset, but there were just too many people there to enjoy it fully.
    We walked about 20mins west to the Linjiang Street Night Market, which is much smaller than others, but pleasant and easy to walk around.
    Had some sweet potatoes with sweet sprinkles which tasted like doughnuts. Nice! Also some dumplings. Great! And some Korean Cheese chicken balls. Not as good, we had these before in Seoul and wanted to check if they were different. But no, their spicy sauce tastes weird, not in a good way.
    Tried to find a bar when we got near the accommodation, but instead found a Thai massage place. We both opted for a shoulder and head massage.
    I got the grumpy looking strong man in the corner.
    Now, I've never experienced child birth, but I imagine the pain is nothing compared to what he was inflicting in a particular knot in my right shoulder. Full elbow with full weight and wiggle. Being cheap we had only paid for the 15 min option. Thank goodness for that!
    However once we left, my shoulders did feel a whole world better.    Weiterlesen

    Here come more Le Poidevins

    Woke up, packed up. Brought some new clothes and chucked some broken ones.
    Then off we go to meet mum, dad and curly at the airport. They landed safely. Family holiday commenced 😁.
    Picked up the hire car and set off toward the small hillside village of Jiufen.
    I drove us for the 1 hour journey. Awful driving conditions with driving rain and wind. It was nice and sunny till they turned up. Ha ha.
    Checked into our hotel on the hill. Nipped out to get some beers and pot noodle for 5. Then an early night for all.    Weiterlesen

    Exploring Jiufen

    19. November 2019 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

    Nice leisurely start of 9am. We had breakfast included which was probably the most butter loaded croissant I've ever had, plus a slab of bacon to wash it down with. Heart attack central.
    Drove down toward the coast. Did a short stop at an unplanned temple stop. Amazing place with 7 floors of gold decorated rooms. We managed to lose Hannah and Curly on the way round.
    The roof was covered in dragons and fighting men. Down to the coast after that to see the golden waterfalls and some sandstone rock features next to massive surf. Walked through a forest and up to a headland to see some panoramic views of the sea and a multicolored military base.
    Narrowly avoided paying 100 pounds for some lobster and ormer lunch. We thought it was going to be about a 10th of that.
    Drove up the road back to our village and went straight out to the old street.
    Found a lovely place for tea and nibbles. We had to add small dried tea leaves to a pot, which expanded to about 50 times their size. The green tea made us all feel spaced out.
    Fully spaced out we found somewhere for beer and dumplings, with a great view over the hills and valley.
    On the way back curly took us on a detour down a cave and found another pub at the end. Had 5 huge beers and booked a woody hotel for the next few nights.
    Picked up an Oreo waffle on the way home to share. Well tasty!    Weiterlesen

    Sun Moon Lake

    Up to try and get some drone shots but too rainy. 😫.
    Had another heart attack breakfast with butter, more butter, extra butter, chips, sausage and more butter. Artery clogging tastic.
    Drove for 3 hours to a man made lake called Sun Moon Lake. Very picturesque, if a bit cloudy.
    Checked in to our Switzerland style chalet, with high wooden ceilings and a balcony bedroom, overlooking the others for Hannah and I.
    Wandered to the lake and took a boat trip on a catamaran to the other side and back.
    Curly not feeling well, so we went back so she could chill out and have a bath.
    After she warmed up we went out for some food. Almost everything was closed by 7.30 and we struggled to find somewhere to eat.
    Found a nice man who said he would cook us some food. Fed us all with beer for only £20.75, bargain.
    Dad and I had a brief conversation with a swearing parrot on the way home, which I'm sure was made much more funny by the 58% spirit from the store (costing only £1.50 for a little bottle).    Weiterlesen

    An unexpected theme park

    Packed up in our woody Switzerland style chalet on the edge of Sun Moon Lake. Very nice breakfast of mushroom fruit, sausage and boiled egg.
    The plan was to walk to the cable car and go to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village.

    Cable car gave us some fantastic views over the Sun Moon lake. We walked down the hill being treated to an aboriginal dance and music show. Saw how they used to live in stone huts with wooden carvings everywhere. At the bottom of the hill was a theme park. Not what we were expecting, with big rides. Curly, Hannah and I went on one twice which took you 80m up then dropped you. Great fun.
    With almost no one there, we got on and off most of the rides nice and quickly.
    At 4pm we took the cable car back up to the top and down to our town. A quick beer to watch the sunset ove the lake and back to change. After an hour back at the hotel, we thought we would learn our lesson by heading out early for food.
    No such luck with places closing at 6 all over the place.
    One place was almost full so we went in there. Had a set menu for 7 for 5 of us. Lovely food including fried bananas, pepper beef and fish from the Sun Moon Lake. Stuffed! Back for some wine and a 58% bird seed wine to finish the night. Chriiiiiissstt.    Weiterlesen

    Lambai island

    22. November 2019 in Taiwan ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

    Got on the way for our 3 hour drive at about 10am. We were heading south to get a ferry to the island of Lambai. A small island off the South West coast of Taiwan.
    Arrived and got straight on a fast boat, taking 25mins to get to the Island. Scoped out hiring scooters and bicycles, and settled on electric bikes.
    The island is only 5k long so doesn't take long to get around. Checked into our accommodation and set off to get some dinner from the shop. Salad, hot dogs, sandwiches, beer, more beer and red wine. Made it down to the coast in time for sunset. I got in a quick drone flight whilst everyone else got the beers going. Shortly after the sun went down, we had to abandon the beach as the mosquitos were forming an organised attack, regardless of the deet.

    Had some more food on the balcony overlooking the sea and the stars. Played cards until the bar opened at 8pm. Then proceeded to play pool until 10. Only people in the bar, which was probably quite lucky. At only a pound a beer it was a nice cheap evening.    Weiterlesen
