    CDMX

    October 29, 2023 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

    📍CDMX, Mexico

We ❤️ tacos. No really, we are in absolute heaven in Mexico City with all the tacos there are to eat and all the things there are to see. I'm going out on a limb to say it's our favourite place on the trip so far.

We're staying in the Roma Norte area, and it's SO cool, and very hipster. So I won't lie my battered Tevas look horrendous when I'm walking around, but we're surrounded by underground markets, Australia-inspired coffee shops, independent artisan boutiques and queued-out-the-door taquerías. In parts, it honestly feels like we could be in Barcelona or Paris, and it seems really safe. Coupled with the fact that it's Day of the Dead and Formula 1 happening this weekend, the city is literally jam-packed with extra people.

Normally, there are 21+ million people living here, so I'm sure there are other sides to the city, but in the few days we've had, we couldn't have enjoyed it more.

    Oaxaca

    October 31, 2023 in Mexico

    📍Oaxaca, Mexico

An *unbelieveable* experience for Day of the Dead over the last few days. They say Oaxaca is the best place to celebrate it in Mexico, so we (and what seemed like half of America) paid through the nose to stay here and tick it off our bucket lists. Health and safety regs were out the window with the sparklers into the audience from wooden structures, but the costumes and atmosphere were unbeatable!

The festival is rooted in spirituality and gives Mexican people time to think of loved ones who have died and to call their souls back for a few days to remember them. They offer dead relatives and pets, tokens of things they liked, and guide them back with the brightly coloured marigold flowers that are literally all over the city. The tradition still exists, but for tourists, the celebration is about following parades down the streets and getting involved with all the open-air concerts they put on.

Oaxaca itself seems really beautiful and colourful with the prettiest decorations all over. Everywhere you turn, you just want to take another picture. Even Adam has taken about 6 pics here!

    Puerto Escondido

    November 8, 2023 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

    📍Puerto Escondido, Mexico

Yes, the time came for us to take a holiday from the holiday 😅 After travelling pretty quickly round countries and cities, we needed some time to do very little and go to the beach. So, we changed our flights, extended our stay, and decided to go to the hidden gem of Puerto Escondido. All fine and well, except that every other gringo from Oaxaca also came here after the celebrations too... Turns out it's an expensive party place lol. However, we've still loved it!

For us, it's been exploring smaller beaches (and clinging onto the back of open 'colectivo' trucks to get there), surfing lessons, and some open-air BBQs with mezcal thrown in. What's not to love?!

Puerto Escondido - dolphins and tacos

    November 11, 2023 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

    📍Puerto Escondido, Mexico

A final wrap-up on our stay in Puerto Escondido - a sea safari followed by a fish taco night. After an hour of hurtling through the ocean at breakneck speed, I was ready to be sick, but then we spotted a pod of about 100 spinner dolphins, followed by a turtle and jumping manta rays. As ever, my handy goggles meant we could jump into the water and see the dolphins swimming next to us, which was really special.

Leaving this beach resort with mixed feelings in all honesty. We're mostly sad to say goodbye to our friends @livandjltravel, who we met by chance on a taco tour in CDMX. We essentially followed them here hehe and got to spend most days together exploring and chatting about life in Scotland and South Africa. They've really made our experience in Mexico so far, and there were real-life tears saying adiós 🥹 But also, by the end, we're happy to move on as we didn't love Puerto Escondido. The locals were not hugely friendly, and it's the first time we felt unsafe at times. So overall, it's a beautiful destination, but we're not sure we'd recommend it.

    Chichen Itza

    November 13, 2023 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

📍Chichen Itza, Valladolid, Izamal and a cenote, Mexico

Arrived to Mérida, and fired straight onto a big tourist tour to another one of the seven wonders of the world. Turns out it was our best organised excursion of the trip and we managed to squeeze in visiting a few smaller towns in the Yucatan area too which were so pretty (and had cheap street tacos)! Learning about Maya culture was fascinating and one of the best things we discovered is that if you clap at a specific point at the bottom of the pyramid, a quetzal bird noise plays back at you created inside the structure, which is A 97% ACCURACY to the real bird 🤯

Then we visited our first cenote, big water holes created by meteors (supposedly). And as usual, Adam was absolutely thriving in the water. Him and a nine year old boy were competitvely taking turns to run and jump off the diving platform, and he's never looked happier.

  • Day 20

    Mérida

    November 15, 2023 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

    📍Mérida, Mexico

Once voted one of the safest cities in the Americas, Mérida locals are so proud of their peaceful and successful home. It's got a real charm to it and is as colourful and pretty as we've come to expect when visiting other similar places in the area. We're a big fan of walking tours, so needless to say, we did another one here and learnt more about the Maya history and that apparently it's so safe because many cartel family members live here...

Photos taken over a few days, but you wouldn't be able to tell, as Señor Watt wore one outfit the whole time. He's very much in his football shirt era, where I've been forced to go to sports shop after sports shop to pick up obscure local club tops (which he'll then pretend are real when he gets home obviously). In fairness, it's probably quite a good idea because in our experience, walking anywhere in the Yucatan heat means you're immediately dripping in sweat. Lovely.

  • Day 24

    Bacalar

    November 19, 2023 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

    📍Bacalar, Mexico

🥇 - The medal awarded to Bacalar as the most beautiful place I've ever been in all my puff!

Once a series of individual cenotes, it's now one big, crystal clear, turquoise lagoon. Bacalar is one of two places in the world to have stromalites in the water too. They're organisms which are three million years old and grow one millimetre each year! Only downside to the town is that they seem super focused on tourism, and you worry the ecosystem will take a hit in years to come. But until then, what a joy it is to swim in fresh water where you can always see the bottom and it's soft and muddy on your feet. Mmmm.

We did a SUP tour at sunrise, which was quite different from the last time I did it in the Scottish Highlands. Obviously, I ended up at the back, and Adam was the sporty teacher's pet doing tricks at the front. Classic. There's now talk of buying his own paddleboard for the Union Canal... Save me now.

That's us at just over 10 weeks in now. Adam's got 5 weeks left (I've got 7 😇), and it's really made us slow down and think about how grateful we are to be here, how quickly it's flown by, and that there's not much time left!
