      Day 4 El Calafate

      16. helmikuuta, Argentiina ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Today we flew 2000 miles south into Patagonia. Interesting flight which included dogs on owners knees.
El calafate looks like a cross between an Austrian ski resort and a Canadian Rockies town . Hotel from the outside looks like a ski chalet but inside I think more Torquay and Basil Fawlty.
Went for a nice walk down to the nature reserve on the lake but not get all around so will go back . Great bird watching .
This evening we had a nice meal and shared a grilled lamb dish .Far too much meat - impossible here to go veggie ! Hotel room quite basic .

      Ankunft in Buenos Aires

      4. joulukuuta, Argentiina ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

      Planning, partying & San Telmo

      8. tammikuuta 2023, Argentiina ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

After I met Lilli (German) and Anaëlle(France) in the hostel, I decided to travel with them. They already booked bus tickets to Iguazu and to bariloche. So I booked 3x a bus ticket at the bus station, where it was very hard without any Spanish, but it worked💪🏽 lilli got robbed nearby a favella at the bus station and another chile girl from the hostel got during clubbing her handy robbed 🥶 but I am fine😎

I also went with the 3 chile girls at the evening to Palermo, which was nice💪🏽😎(Javi, Olivia, Inga)

At the next day I went with Lilli and Anaelle(and their friends+ Ryan) to the same places I went the days before. Also we went to San telmo for trying to dance tango😂💪🏽
Anaëlle and myself cooked without a lot of skills in the kitchen after that, and it was so funny😂

After that we went to a very big night club, which students organised and it was a very nice party!

Now we are heading to the Iguazu falls with the bus (~20h). We will leave our backpack at the flat of a friend of Anaëlle, which is very nice 😂

To get in touch for the first time with South America and the vibes there… it is already amazing 😍 Argentina is quite busy for backpacking currently, so the prices are with the inflation rate of ~100% quite high.

(A bus/metro ticket cost with the blue rate 0,1€, so very cheap.
The blue rate is, that if you withdraw money from an atm you get a normal currency exchange, 180:1€, but if you withdraw it with western union, you get 360:1€, which I didn’t know before starting my trip.
And I hope that the quality of the pictures will get better 😂)

      W Trek

      30. tammikuuta 2023, Argentiina

      - We did East to West which we loved 😍

      - Night 1 in Chileno, Night 2 in Cuernos, Night 3 in Pain Grande.

      - Full board at all 3 campsites which was decent. On day 2, we forgot to collect our lunches at Chileno before we left to hike so thankfully we had brought some food from El Calafate 😆 we brought trail mix, pot noodles, tuna, rice cakes & a tub of dulche de leche 😋 The fruit got taken off us when we crossed the border from Argentina en route to Puerto Natales!

      - In hindsight, the only thing we would change is staying in Frances campsite on Night 2 so that the day 2 hike was a bit longer as we found day 2 hike very easy & we would have liked to hike for a little longer.

      Day 1 - Central - Base Torres - Chileno
      - Bus from Puerto Natales - Laguna Amarga where we showed and had our park pass scanned.
      - Got on a shuttle bus to Central Torres where the hike begins. $5usd.
      - Had a lovely juice and protein bar in the welcome centre to chill and get organised before starting. So nice and we were glad we did this to let the 2 bus loads go ahead before us.
      - Amazing sunshine for us as we began the upward climb from Central to Chileno 5.5km. Steep but manageable and fabulous views 😍
      - We gladly arrived at Chileno and hung around for about an hour to have a bit of lunch (tuna wraps 😋), fill up on water, check in & leave our bags before taking on the Base Torres climb, another 4km.
      - Such a lovely start going through a wooded area and accompanied by the river flowing throughout. Base Torres climb wasn't too challenging, however, the crowds that day were huge. We were constantly stuck behind people also trying to summit which made the climb a little less enjoyable. Hindsight, we wouldn't have stopped for the hour and kept going though I'm not sure how much that wouls have helped either. There seemed to be lots of day trip group tours and these in particular seemed to slow everyone down so if you can beat the tours getting here, you will enjoy the hike so much more.

      - Base Torres is sensational. The colours and the vastness of it all 😍 we forgot to bring snacks so we hung around for a while before realising we were starting to get hungry and made our way down again!!

      - It was salmon for dinner and it was amazing 😋 3 course meal and we were content! We enjoyed celebratory pints too🍻

      Day 2 - Chileno - Cuernos
      - Our breakfast was scheduled for 7am so we woke early, enjoyed the breakfast and got on the road again around 8am. We were determined to beat the crowds!

      - Note to self: don't forget to collect the lunches before heading off next time!

      - Chileno - Cuernos. We had the route to ourselves for the most part which was a real treat. Walking in the sunshine along the lakes, just fabulous. A real highlight for both of us ✨️

      - Cuernos - Pain Grande - Lago Grey (37km)
We were so excited for a big hike. We set off early at 6:30am buzzing for the day despite the fairly heavy rainfall. It had been so lovely the past 2 days so we didn't mind and thought it would blow over pretty quickly but unfortunately it didn't!

      - We easily got to the Italiano campsite where the Mirador Britannica trek starts to discover that the route itself is closed due to the stormy winds and snowfall at the top. We hung around at Italiano with the other disappointed hikers but it was getting a little cold standing around and so we decided we were going to keep moving towards Pain Grande and try to do Lago Grey today instead with the idea to do Mirador Britannica tomorrow if the weather allowed.

      - We made the most of walking through the rain and within 2 hours, we found ourselves at Pain Grande. It was fairly flat the whole way so we zoomed on!

      - We checked in to the Refugio and had our lunch and got into warm clothes. I had got a real chill as I had naively dressed for the day thinking the rain would clear off!!

      - We hung here for about an hour before taking on Lago Grey. Weather had cleared a little and we made the most of what we had. A lovely incline and having not done much research on lago Grey or the w trek in general and what to expect, we were so taken aback when we reached the first Viewpoint of the Grey Glacier. It was like nothing we had ever seen before! We took some quick pics in between the strong winds and got going again towards Grey campsite.

      - 11km later we arrived at Grey campsite and continued for another 10 mins to the viewpoint. Absolutely class and we were able to have a lunch with the Glacier as our backdrop! Unbelievable 😍

      - We got back around 5:30pm wrecked and so excited for a warm shower. It was a big day but I think our favourite day despite the weather!

      W Trek (continued)

      30. tammikuuta 2023, Argentiina ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Day 4 - Pain Grande - Peurto Natales
      - Unfortunately, the weather persisted when we woke up so we decided against Britannica based on the recommendations we received and instead we took the earlier ferry back to Pudeto.

      - The ferry leaves in front of Pain Grande. ($30usd cash only)
When we got off the ferry at Pudeto at approx 11am, we were told there was a bus at 2pm and there would be no issues with space. When it arrived, it was already full 😬 maybe this was down to the weather that more people than usual had got the early boat back but it was a little stressful as the next bus after this was at 8pm. We managed to bribe the bus driver with $20usd to bring us to Laguna Amarga and then by some grace of God, he showed loyalty to us over other people at Amarga desperately trying to catch the bus to Peurto Natales and gave us 2 of the seats that people didn't turn up for. We did however pay him another $20usd for those seats so he did well out of us. Usually the bus from Pudeto ferry to Puerto Natales costs about $10usd on busbud.com.

Arrived in Puerto Natales and got to the Lady Florence Dixie hotel which was lovely. We were fairly wrecked. Had amazing food (burger & tacos) in Wild which was simple but such a cool, chilled vibe which was exactly what we needed, followed by more drinks of course! 🍻

El Calafate ➡️ Perito Merino➡️El Chaltén

      30. tammikuuta 2023, Argentiina ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      - We finally get our rental car!! This is so exciting as we are a bit fed up of long bus journeys!! (18,500 pesos per day)

      - First stop is Perito Merino Glacier, 1hr20min drive from El Calafate which was so much more vast than we could have ever imagined, it took our breath away.
$5500 pesos to enter the park.

      - Next stop is Elbar back in El Calafate for omelettes before our drive to El Chalten!

      - We arrive in El Chalten earlier than we expected. Google maps said it was 3hr20 minute drive but its much shorter than that. We were here in just over 2 hours. Roads are very easy to drive, no traffic at all. El Chalten ia such a cool spot surrounded by amazing mountains everywhere you look ⛰️

      - We checked in to Campo Base Apartments, self catering which we loved & would highly recommend. $22500 pesos per night.

      - Burgers & pints again for dinner! 🍻 🍔

      - We had planned to start the Mt Fitzroy & Laguna de la Tres trek at 7am but as we got to the supermarket to pick up our lunch for the day, we realised it didn't open til 8!! So back to the apartment to relax for an hour as nothing else seemed open!!

      - Take 2 and we pick up lots of food for our hike! They did ham & cheese slices from the deli which were lovely and meant we didn't have to buy packet stuff 😄 water, protein bars, lays, bread, yoghurt, apples, bananas and we are finally ready to go!

      - This 20km hike was my favourite to date. It was also the most challenging, I nearly calved during the last 2km to the top whereas Jas breezed through it! I didn't sleep the night before which I'm saying was the reason I struggled so much haha but the steepness of the last 2km really took me by surprise!! Worth every step. We had our ham & cheese sandwiches by the water and I got down to my underwear to jump in the water.. it was so refreshing and so freezing 🥶!

      - After about an hour of sitting in sunshine at this incredible Laguna, we took some photos before hiking up the hill on the left hand side. We had seen some people do it but we weren't sure why. We got to the top, it's only about 5 mins up and discovered another Laguna with waterfalls flowing in!!! So cool 😎

      - We got down that evening and I was tired after this one! Straight to a busy Italian restaurant for spaghetti & meatballs and jas had the Carbonara 🍝 we earned them!!!

      - Early night for us that evening. We stayed in our favourite hotel so far - Cumbres Nevadas. A really lovely hotel, we sat outside to watch the sunset and enjoyed breakfast with a view here too. Highly recommend 👌 ($70usd for the room)
