      Salta la linda

      May 31, 2022 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

      Lubrimax

      June 19, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Read more

      The long road to Salta

      November 19, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

The day started with us receiving a little gift from our hosts in Jujuy, which will from now on ride with me, decorating the front of my bike. 🎁

Our destination for today was Salta, the largest town around here and the regional capital. When researching possible routes there were 3 options:
      1. Shorter but with more than 1500m of climbing, and following a busy highway
      2. A longer route along main roads with less climbing
      3. A "bicycle route" planned by Openstreetmaps and avoiding highways.

The last option looked the best to us, and after double checking that it followed the small but "official" ruta provincial 26 we were sure it would be well ridable.
So we set off, the 20km following paved roads.

When we turned off the paved main road onto the ruta provincial it soon dawned on us that the next 20 km on this road would be anything bit a piece of cake.
The road was supposed to run in parallel to a half dried out river bed but instead the tracks meandered right through were the river was supposed to be, sometimes disappearing completely, leaving us rumbling over the stoney riverbed.
In many places we had to cross little streams, some of them being quite long or deep or both.

Heat (27°C+), humidity and challenging terrain had us going at maybe 9kph and free roaming bulls eyeing us suspiciously made us slow down even more when passing the countless kettle heards.

Every now and then there were kettle gates, but it was not until we were 10km in that we found the first locked gate...we had 2 options: turning around and go all the way back to the main road, or take all our luggage off and pass the bikes over the gate...
Of course we went for the latter, hoping it would be just this one gate that is closed...Going back is never really an option.

We encountered one more closed gate along the riverbed before the path took a sudden turn taking us up into a pine forest! That's not what I expected to see.
2 km before we were supposed to be back on a small, windy paved road the 3rd closed gate appeared. Bigger that the others before and quite the challenge to pass over, but we made it.

The rest of the way was a mix of nice paved mountain roads, riverbeds - this time with considerably more water to push through - and stoney/gravely provincial roads.

Eventhough it was a very tiring day I absolutely loved the offroad section. I think for the next trip I will need to change to a Mountainbike though, to make the offroad bits even more enjoyable 😅

We arrived in Salta late in the afternoon, soaked through from sweat and riverwater and covered in what felt like multiple centimetres of dust and dirt, and checked into our fancy AirBnB (for 8€ p.P. 🤯 - loving those argentinian prices) ready to spent a couple of rest days in the city.

What was planned as a 2 day stopover turned into 5 days of bike repairs, fancy food and lazyness 🤷‍♀️

      🚴‍♀️Distance cycled: 94 km
      🪨 Percentage unpaved: 30 %
💦 Number of river crossings: 10+
      🔐 Locked gates climbed: 3
      🚨 Time spent trespassing: ❓️
👟 Time spent riding with wet shoes: 80%
      🐂 Bullfights avoided: 100 😨

      Purmamarca und nach Salta

      March 25 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Willkommen im real existierenden Sozialismus! 🤮

      84. Change of Plans - off to Argentina

      November 20, 2019 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Due to all of the demonstrations and roadblocks in Bolivia, we were forced to cut out many of the Bolivian cities from our itinerary, and ended up in Chile about 10 days ahead of schedule.

Chile is plagued with political unrest as well, so rather than fight it by heading down the Chilean coast, we scooted over to Argentina. I do have a flight home from the Chilean capital of Santiago on Dec 4, where the political demonstrations are focused, but we're hoping tensions subside before then, so I can get to the airport. If we can't drive through Chile safely, I may have to grab a flight from Argentina to Chile, just to get access to the Santiago airport. Geez. (Btw - when I mention this to my youngest sister, she just says "Well, that's what you signed up for, right?". And yup, she's right)

In the meantime, we went north in Argentina to a town called Humahuaca, which is described as "a painter's palette of color on barren hillsides". Enjoy the astounding colors of the mountains in these pix - they are not touched up.

      Découverte de Salta

      December 20, 2022 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Ouf!

      Dernier jour à Salta

      December 23, 2022 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

      Salta

      May 17, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

      Highlights:
      - Gorgeous (but long!) bus ride from Atacama to Salta
      - Getting a gondola up San Bernardino hill to wander around the park and see the views
      - Having drinks with friends in the main square

      Lowlights:
      - No meals on the bus to Salta so just had snacks and we were very hungry!
      - We had lots of errands to run, like pick up money from Western Union and get a SIM card
      - The free walking tour guide never showed up (which we had planned out whole day around!)
      - We were having so much fun at drinks that we only remembered to pick up our laundry at 9:30pm, at which time it had closed and we had a flight to catch the next morning. We messaged the owner begging for them to open again or early, to which they said they would get a taxi there now, but it turned out they owned a different laundrette and we had no way to pay for their taxi and our laundry was still locked away. Whilst at the restaurant we were waiting in a few doors down from the launderette, the kind waiter who was helping us with translation spotted the actual owner, who was incredibly drunk and happy on a night out with his family for his birthday, who assured us it would be open when we needed it to be the next morning! Thankfully it was, so a huge drama over nothing!

      Food and drinks:
      - An amazing tasting platter of traditional food, including various stews and empanadas
      - Our first of many alfajores, a bit like two shortbread biscuits sandwiched with dulce de leche (caramel made with milk)
      - Eating a traditional cake (meringue, dulce de leche, biscuit layers and nuts - potentially the sweetest thing I've ever eaten) and cheesecake in a beautiful patio looking at the church tower

      Wine and horses

      September 21, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

So on 20th we had a full day bus ride... bus breaking down included! So nothing really to share from that experience!
But we did cross the boarder again to Argentina and arrived in Salta...
The day in Salta was very much to a ranch for unlimited wine with Filipe and Rebecca while the rest of the tribe went horse riding... (I took allergy tablets just to be there for the wine, no chance of getting on a horse!)
Amazing bbq to follow and I tried to set my mum up with the ranch owner... sorry mum, you are now expected there in 1 years time!!!!
      Great wine, great time! 🍷🍷🍷
