      Yalgoo to Mullewa.

      August 29, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

      I'm back. After leaving our camp out of Yalgoo we continued west to Pindar. After Yalgoo the wheat started although not real great crops because it has been so dry
      We looked at Wikicamps the night before and it said that the pub in Pindar serves scones with jam and cream. That turns out to be old news as the pub is closed and is now a private residence. We were told by the girl in the visitors centre in Sandstone that if we head 10kms north from Pindar we will see Wreath Flowers. So disappointed about morning tea we headed off. After driving the 10 or so ks the dirt road becomes a divided road, still dirt, just divided. We parked on the left fork and walked through àbout 30mtrs of scrub to the other fork and there they were scattered over about 400mtrs along both sides of the right fork. Even though not as good this year because of the dry, we thought they looked special. And plenty of others did as well. After a good look at the flowers and a chat with John, a 92yr old local from Mullewa, we headed off to Mullewa and booked into the caravan park for the night.Read more

      Northampton and Mullewa

      August 31, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 33 °C

      We left Monkey Mia after a wonderful few days and then had a tyre blow out on the road out to the main highway. We changed the tyre and continued on to our next stay at Northampton, booking in for some new tyres in Geraldton the next day.

      After getting the tyres replaced and finding a nice cafe for a coffee, we drove on to Mullewa to look at some wildflowers and then continued on to our next stop in Mount Magnet.

      Mullewa

      November 6, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

      Come for the 100km drive through cropping country, and signage mentioning wildflower trails - unfortunately we're out of season for this, to check out Mullewa and surrounds.
      We start by going to the information centre which is open. Lovely lass gives us a map to show us the walks we can do about the town, and places of interest to see. Yes it is mentioned that we've just missed (by about 4 weeks) the most amazing wildflower season...oh well, another reason to come back when it is the right time.
      We start off by going to the Gallery Cafe of local artist Helen. We get to see Helen at work on her latest painting - her colours and style very neat and precise. We enjoy our cappuccino and chai here with a muffin each, raspberry & white chocolate for Rog, lemon for me. It's nice and busy in the Cafe, can understand why - it is a very nice shop to be in, with all Helen's art work, prints and products on display. Next we go for the Heritage walk about Mullewa, this leads us to the walk (what we came for really) that takes us to John Lawes buildings - the church and rectory. They are a work of art within themselves - what a remarkable man John was with all that he achieved. These buildings are an incredible legacy, and so good that they are being preserved. Well worth the drive today! The church and museum (was where John lived) are closed, but we're in luck, the current minister can be contacted (have his phone number displayed at the church entrance) - so Roger rings him, Robert is available to let us have a look. We can only look in the church as the Museum has recently been vandalised (local youth?) and they're waiting on repair work to be done. Again our luck was with us as Robert was just leaving to go to Geraldton, then fly to Perth for a long overdue catch up with some of his family - so we have just been in time for him to give us a quick look - which is all we need. Amazing work with the church - just beautiful. Now we walk back to our ute (parked at Tourist centre) and go for a drive about to check out a couple more things before we start our drive back to Geraldton. We go check out the Aboriginal outdoor worship meeting place that John prepared, and then go to the Scenic Lookout.

      Mullewa

      August 23, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

      After a hectic couple of days working at Geraldton, we moved inland in search of the famous WA Wildflowers...in particular the Wreath Flower.

      After setting up the van at Mullewa, we jumped in with Robert & Karen for the 40km trip out past Pindar to the only location of the Wreath Flowers. They line the sides of the road for about 500m...usually there are a lot more, but lack of rain has stunted their growth.

      Had devonshire teas at Pindar Tea Rooms, and checked out Monsignor Hawes church at Mullewa on the way home.

      Great weather 10-21°

      Mullewa

      September 25, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

      The campground was busy this morning as there was an influx of new bookings due to the school holidays. We noticed the increase in traffic almost immediately after leaving Kalbarri. On the way to Geraldton 3 out of 4 vehicles were towing a camper.

      We unfortunately missed Hutt Lagoon which is a lake that is bright pink for most of the year. There is an algae which causes the pink colour. It is actually harvested as it has high levels of betacaratine and is used as a natural food colouring.

      The landscape reminded us strongly of the land around Greta Valley and Motunau. There was plenty of crops and even sheep farms. Our first stop was Northampton which is a small rural supply town which many of the original shops. The news agency has the original floor boards with all the gaps and noisy creaks. There were also a collection of painted sheep statues dotted around the town.

      Next stop was a shopping mall in Geraldton, very exciting for me. A few essential clothes and a large supermarket shop. We also had lunch there and watched two duelling seagulls fighting for well over 30 minutes.

      Our destination was Mullewa which is small rural town almost 100km from Geraldton. The intention was to stop at a free camp site but we are still looking for it. When we realised we had missed the spot we decided to come to the caravan park in town. The main camp was full but they have an overflow area where we are for 2 nights.

      As it was the AFL grand final we walked to the country club next door for a drink and caught up with some neighbouring campers from Denham. Well done to the Demons they really put on a master class in the second half of the game. The country club was really busy as there was also an 80th birthday party happening. A real local watering hole that we were lucky to share.

      Wildflowers

      September 26, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

      We experienced an unusual event this morning being woken up by rain on the caravan roof. The first time since we left Victoria, it only lasted 15 minutes but nice to experience after 90 days without. Before breakfast we walked the wildflower walk that starts beside the campground. Some of the flowers were past their best but there was enough colour to imagine what it would have looked like a week ago.

      In Mullewa there is an amazing church built by a catholic priest who was also an architect. Monsignor Hawes was responsible for over 50 churches all over the world along with being a committed parish priest. The church is impressive and the town is extremely proud of it and Monsignor Hawes.

      After walking through town we had a coffee and muffin at a pop-up cafe created by local artist Helen Ansell during the wildflower season. Her art was beautiful so it was an enjoyable way to spend some time. Unfortunately that is the only business left except for petrol and a food store.

      Next stop was something exciting for me. We drove to Pindar to see the wreath flowers. They are some very special flowers that only grow in a few areas. They also only grow on dirt that has been disturbed such as roadsides. They were incredible and every time I thought I had photographed the perfect one I found a better one. There were also beautiful flowers on the roadside and we reached a point where Regan threatened to take the camera off me.

      On the way back to the camp we did a tour of some of the farm land and noticed how the flowers changed on each road. We caught up with some friends on video and finally finished the Schitts Creek series. Tomorrow we continue in wildflower country as we head south.

      Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church & Priest

      August 19, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

      'Designed and built by priest architect Monsignor John Hawes during his 22 year stay in Mullewa. The church is considered to be one of his finest designs and is classified by the National Trust.
      Attached to the church is the Priest House, which was Monsignor Hawes’ home for many years. It houses many of his personal effects.'

      This appsolutly stunning church is well worth a visit. If one of the guides are on-site stop and have a chat. It's is fascinating to learn about the talented Monsignor John Hawes and his beautiful churches.

      Mullewa

      August 21, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

      We free camped the last 2 nights a Arturchik's rest about 17ks SW of Mullewa. A very pretty spot surrounded by masses of Pom Pom Everlastings. We spent our days exploring the area and wild flower hunting. There are 2 excellent trails to follow. The northern loop and the southern circuit. Both are very will marked with lots of interesting points of interest. These have great signage with story's about the area.
      Another must is to visit the Catholic church and learn the history of the priest that built it. A truly beautiful church and an amazing man.

      There are also a number of interesting walking trails in town.

      Photos - some of the point of interest on our drive around.
      * The Church of Our Lady of Mt Carmel
      * Greenough River
      * Perkins Well
      * Christian Brothers Ag School (closed) designed by Monsignor John Hawes who also designed and built the church. Could get any closer as big gates locked to keep you out.
      * Butterabby Graves. The site of Aboringinal hangings😢
      * Bindoo Glacier Beds
      * Mass Rock where Monsignor John Hawes held mass for the local Aboriginal people that were to frightened to come into town.
      * Pom Pom Everlastings...view from our van.
      * Ripped my pants when exploring through the bush for wild flowers. Tripped some dead fall. Got to look where I am going.
