Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary I

I arranged another day trip so that I could see some of the Tas wildlife that I unfortunately haven’t seen in the wild. The company was Heart of Tasmania Tours, the only one that offers a shuttle. Again the cost was high....$35 for a 30 minute drive to the Sanctuary at the edge of town. There were other tours that took you to a historic village as well but they were twice the price. Public buses don’t go to this area so it was my only option. Admission was $31. The tour company allowed 90 minutes to view the animals and it was ample time.

Bonorong is Tasmania’s largest 24 hour wildlife rescue service and has the first wildlife-only hospital. It is funded entirely by entry fees. Many of the animals are being raised for release but some would not survive on their own. They are also part of a “breed and release” program. Australia has one of the highest species extinction rates in the world. Knowing this took away some of the sting of the high entry fee! We were supposed to get a guided tour but all we got was a quick two minute introduction. There were staff available throughout the sanctuary, some more helpful than others. I didn’t go to the Sydney Zoo because the admission to it was $49 so I was glad that I got to see some of the animals unique to Australia.Read more

"Churchill" near Campania

Our next stop was a private property "Churchill" that was built in 1845 by Winston Churchill Simmons. The property is Tasmanian Heritage listed and apparently last sold in 2006 for a tidy $1.3m. We stayed in a nice mown paddock at the back of the property with 4 or 5 other vans. The weather was still nasty so we looked for things to do in the wind and rain. A short trip to Richmond in a rare break in the weather allowed us to explore this wonderful old town. A visit to the Richmond Gaol Site is eye opening. Port Arthur is not the only significant convict site in Tasmania. We walked around town and down to the oldest still used bridge in Australia, Richmond Bridge. It is in remarkably good condition. We visited the Sweets & Treats shop in the main street for some...umm.. sweets and treats. The rain started again so back to camp. Hobart to Oatlands

This morning (after a not so great experience at a Big 4 caravan park) we got up early and headed back to Hobart. We only went in there so we could get some laundry done, but even that was sooo expensive in comparison to other places.

Back in Hobart, we decided to split up, Bart went to the Maritime Museum while I had a look around the city then I met him and we went though the Tasmanian Museum (which was free 🤗).

After a lovely lunch at Mures on the wharf we headed north, stopping at the Killara Distillery that we had been recommended to stop at by our Accountant while we were here.

Kristy who owns it is the daughter of the Lark Distillery owners so grew up in the industry. Because we were the only ones there we got the full tour and even got to taste the whisky prior to it being barrelled. It was also the first distillery we've been to that we weren't charged to taste the Whisky and Gin!

We headed onto Oatlands our stop for tonight to another freecamp near a lake. So much nicer than a sterile caravan park, where everyone is jammed in next to each other!

The rain started when we arrived so we'll explore this place tomorrow when it's hopefully drier 🤞 Oatlands has the most sandstone homes from the colonial period in Australia. The Callington Mill Distillery is also here.

Fun fact, the longest serving hangman in the British Empire lived in Oatlands. He was an ex convict and worked as a hangman from 25 to his last hanging at 71! He was paid per person that he hung and was sent all over Tasmania hanging people! 😬Read more

Lake Dulverton, Oatlands

Lake Dulverton is in the picturesque town of Oatlands in the Central Midlands. This little town is almost all heritage listed with the standout building being the Callington Mill. The exterior has been refurbished since we were last here and the mill workings inside have been totally rebuilt. Unfortunately it was closed when we arrived. In fact the whole town looked like a ghost town. Still not sure what was going on.Read more

Bi dene Tier womer id Geheg ine händ dörfe und füetere händ dörfe sind alles Tier gsi wo wäg verschiedene Gründ nüm dörfed usgwilderet werde, deshalb sinds scho recht an Mensch gwöhnt. De Wombat häts Z.B mega gnosse dass mer mit im knuddlet hät (mir natürli au) ;)

On our way to the East Coast we dropped into the Bushland Gardens. A native garden full of sculptures that had been developed by a group from Hobart including Sue and her husband Chris.

Oatsland to Launceston

We left Hobart heading back towards Devonport in preparation for catching the ship back to the mainland.
Drove to Oatlands for a night and then onto Launceston.
We stopped at Ross to have a look around beautiful architecture again Tassie is full of wonderful buildings. We drove Jacob's Ladder in Ben Lomond National Park.
Jacob's ladder is only a short section but wow it is amazing.
Managed to get a couple of pictures of the silhouettes this time.Read more
