      Schloss Schönbrunn

      Vandaag zijn we om 12:15u weer met de bus en metro richting het centrum van Wenen gegaan.
      We gaan naar het paleis van Sissi! Iets waar ik (Rox) erg naar uitkeek. 😊
      Het is wel even een rit van bijna 1,5u. 🚌🚋

      Rond 13:45u komen we dan aan bij Schloss Schönbrunn. Wat is het daar groot! Zie de foto's maar.
      Een tour door het paleis mag niet ontbreken, we gaan dan ook voor de grand tour met audio begeleiding.
      30 kamers (op de eerste etage) zijn er opengesteld voor bezichtiging, van de 1400(!).
      Het paleis laat helaas wel meer zien over Maria Theresia, regerend aartshertogin van Oostenrijk (1740) (beter bekend als de moeder van Marie-Antoinette, (koningin van frankrijk (1774)), dan van Elisabeth, omdat het paleis natuurlijk al veel ouder is, dan het bekend is van Sissi.
      Ik denk dat het Sissi Museum wat dat betreft interessanter is, maar daar kreeg ik Lars toch écht niet mee naar binnen voor 20eu p.p. 🙈
      Het paleis vond hij (en ik ook) wel heel mooi en interessant.

      Na het paleis van binnen gezien te hebben, zijn we ook nog eventjes door de tuin gaan wandelen.
      Die is ook echt HUGE!
      Er grenst zelfs een labyrint (doolhof) aan en een zoo (dierentuin)!
      Daar zijn we niet wezen kijken, want er stond nog meer op de planning.

      The Danube, Schloss Schönbrunn & Rebecca

      We woke up to a thin layer of snow on the cars in the street, which didn't seem to melt all day, probably because it didn't get above 2°C. A little bit exciting!

      Craig and I went out to forage for some pastries for breakfast, and not long after we set off for a walk to clap eyes on the Danube River. The Blue Danube by Austrian composer Johann Strauss II was the piece I played at my first piano recital in 1978 (I assume an abridged version for novice players), so it didn't seem right to be staying so close to the river and not actually see it. It also meant we got to see more of the modern Vienna. We also saw all the long ships that older generations cruise the Danube on lined up along the bank. The Viking one looked the most tired... More like a floating fibro shack, so we thought we'd feel a bit ripped off if you rocked up to get on the Viking one and you were docked next to all the other significantly more fancy ones!

      Walking back into the old town it started to snow. ❄️

      Finn was not impressed that we decided to have a coffee sitting outside with snow wafting around with a great view of St Stephen's Cathedral.

      We then had the absolute thrill of having the company of Rebecca (#5 and our last au pair) for the day. She booked the train across from Germany yesterday as a last minute thing and it was so special to see her. She could also be our translator for the day. It was a welcomed relief to spend several hours in a traditional Austrian restaurant with great bier, schnitzel and kaiserschmarrn for dessert.

      We poked our heads into the National Bibliotek (and I wasn't even wearing a cardigan), and Rebecca's Austrian friend Rahel, who she met in Noosa, joined us as our unwitting tourist guide. We caught the train out to Schloss Schonbrunn... more incredible Christmas markets, glühwein, and a wander through the gardens. We then went to the nachtmarkets which was like a long linear version of the Queen Victoria Markets in Melbourne, took refuge from the extreme cold in a small pub, and then later got the full Christmas lights experience back at St Stephen's Cathedral.

      Sadly it was then time to say goodbye to Rebecca 😞. Thanks for visiting us!      Okumaya devam et

      Schloss Schönbrunn

      Heute stand die Besichtigung des Schloss Schönbrunn an. Leider darf man - wie auch schon im Buckingham Palace - keine Fotos in den Innenräumen machen.
      Anders als in London ist das Schloss Schönbrunn wesentlich schlichter eingerichtet. Kaiser Franz mochte nicht so pompös leben.
      Es war interessant einen Einblick in die Geschichte der Habsburger Monarchie zu bekommen. Gar nicht so einfach die ganzen Namen auseinander zu halten, da sie alle Franz, Franz-Josef, Franz-Stefan, Karl oder ähnlich hießen…
      So glücklich wie Kaiserin Sissi in den Filmen wirkte, soll sie wohl nicht gewesen sein.
      Dass sie später sogar ermordet wurde, war mir gar nicht bewusst.

      Da es Lea an diesem Tag nicht so gut ging, haben wir es ruhig angehen lassen und sind nur durch die Straßen spaziert und waren am späteren Nachmittag noch etwas essen.      Okumaya devam et

      Als letzte Etappe für heute fahren wir nach Schönbrunn.

      Ein wahnsinnig großer Park erwartet uns, alles sehr akkurat geschnitten und in Form gebracht.

      Palazzo di Schönbrunn

      La futura casa di Sofia 👸🏼

      Nel pomeriggio visitiamo il Palazzo di Schönbrunn, che ci regala delle belle emozioni. A partire dagli appartamenti, fino all'immenso giardino.
      Ma il massimo sono la Gloriette, con una visita meravigliosa sul palazzo, e il labirinto, davvero divertente.

      Si rientra a casa per aperitivo e sistemazione prima della serata... Ma la tentazione di un gelato ha la meglio: una gelateria italiana ci offre un buonissimo cono.      Okumaya devam et

      First stop Schonbrunn Palace. Stunningly beautiful with gold detailing, super high ceilings, and I have never understood how prestige is defined by the height of the doorways. Not allowed to take pictures of the inside. Christmas markets at the palace selling all sorts of goodies. We indulged in mulled wine, apple strudel pretzel, goulash soup on cob bun and roasted chestnuts (easier to open than macadamias).

      By this time it was getting dark sunset about 4.30pm. We headed into the city to wander around. Magnificent buildings, cathedrals and statues. Couple of Christmas markets were in full swing.

      Then off to a Viennese Waltz Concert. Orchestra played magnificently. Conductor reminded me of Mr Bean with his enthusiasm, expressions and movement.

      Tomorrow off to Germany (Munich) via Hallstatt. Expecting cooler temperatures and maybe if we are lucky some snow.      Okumaya devam et

      Final stop was Schönbrunn Palace, work started in 1569, but passed to the monarch in mid 1700 as a gift to the then Empress of Austria Maria Theresa, then the palace had most of the major expansion was during the reign of Franz Joseph, the longest Austrian monarch.Okumaya devam et

      Today we decided to visit the most popular tourist site in Vienna, the Schonbrunn Palace. Having seen all the beautiful images of the palace and its stunning gardens, I couldn’t wait. And add in their well known Easter Markets, it was a day I was looking forward to.

      What I realised today was that I have got my timings wrong on when is the right season to visit Vienna. Thinking Spring would be when their gardens would be at their most glorious, it has been a big disappointment realising how wrong I was. The gardens at the palace were in a state of maintenance and what had been cut back for Winter had not yet started sprouting. I was very underwhelmed but can imagine how impressive they could be at the right time of the year.

      Schönbrunn Palace was the main summer residence of the Habsburg rulers, and the name Schönbrunn means “beautiful spring". The history of the 1441 room Palace and it vast gardens spans over 300 years, reflecting the changing tastes, interests, and aspirations of successive Habsburg monarchs. It has been a major tourist attraction since the mid-1950s. Considering it’s importance in history we were surprised by the exterior, expecting a more ornate building, and a more maintained building. We can only imagine the costs to keep the property to high standards and with the interior being the main tourist attraction it is only right that most of the maintenance be invested there.

      After a stroll around the palace grounds we ventured into the Easter Markets set in front of the palace. These were a collection of food and drink stalls (the warm mulled apple cider and the Viennese version of macaroni and cheese was delicious), handcrafted wares and lots of Easter themed products. I loved the intricately decorated eggs but there was no way they would survive the journey home.

      Once we had finished exploring the grounds and market, and with Brad not feeling the best, we called it a day so Brad could get some well needed rest.      Okumaya devam et

      Schloss Schönbrunn Wien

      Das Schloss Schönbrunn geht in seiner heutigen Form zunächst auf eine von und für Kaiser Joseph I. geplante Residenz zurück, die Kaiserin Maria Theresia später im 18. Jahrhundert für ihre Familie zur gemütlichen Sommerresidenz umbauen ließ. Das Schloss liegt seit 1892 im 13. Wiener Gemeindebezirk, der seit damals Hietzing genannt wird. Der Name Schönbrunn bezieht sich auf einen Kaiser Matthias zugeschriebenen Ausspruch. Er soll hier im Jahr 1619 auf der Jagd eine artesische Quelle entdeckt und darüber erfreut ausgerufen haben: „Welch’ schöner Brunn!“
      Von 1638 bis 1643 wurde in dieser Gegend ein Schlossbau als Residenz für die zweite Ehefrau des Kaisers Ferdinand II., Eleonora Gonzaga, errichtet. Diese Anlage wurde in der Zweiten Wiener Türkenbelagerung 1683 schwer beschädigt. 1687 gab Leopold I. für seinen Thronfolger Joseph I. einen repräsentativen Neubau von Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach für das damals weit vor den Toren der Stadt gelegene Schloss in Auftrag.

      Erst ab 1743 wurden unter Maria Theresia von Nikolaus von Pacassi und Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg das Schloss und der Park in seiner heutigen Form um- und ausgebaut. Der barocke Palast war von der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts bis zum Ende des Heiligen Römischen Reiches im Jahre 1806 die Sommerresidenz der Könige und Kaiser des Reiches und ab 1804 bis zum Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges des österreichischen Kaiserhauses. Das Schloss war in dieser Zeit fast durchgehend von einem mehrere hundert Personen umfassenden Hofstaat bewohnt und wurde zu einem kulturellen und politischen Mittelpunkt des Habsburgerreiches. Während der österreichisch-ungarischen Monarchie wurde es auch k. k. Lustschloss Schönbrunn genannt.

      Schönbrunn ist das größte Schloss und eines der bedeutendsten und meistbesuchten Kulturgüter Österreichs. Das Schloss und der etwa 160 ha große Park sind seit 1996 Teil des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes. Eine Hauptattraktion im Schlosspark ist der älteste noch bestehende Zoo der Welt, der Tiergarten Schönbrunn (16 ha). Schloss und Park zählen zu den touristischen Hauptsehenswürdigkeiten in Wien.       Schőnbrunn Palace

      It took us about 2 hours to explore the palace. Along with the ticket for entry, you get an audio guide to give context to what you see. Reminds us of Versailles but smaller. There is so much history in this building; it is brain overload. It dates back to 1569 when Maximillian II owned it and used it as a hunting lodge. A mere couple hundred years later various Habsburg rulers lived there; including Marie Antoinette who they married off to Louis XVI.

      The furnishings and decor have been restored beautifully.      Okumaya devam et
