      Brugge in de regen

      We hebben ons ingesteld op een nat bezoek aan Brugge. Het is niet anders… om de tijd te doden tot 10 uur (winkelopeningstijd) is Marian nog baantjes gaan trekken in het zwembad vlakbij. Toen het een kwartiertje droog was zijn we snel naar de stad gefietst. En nu trekken we van pashokje naar pashokje… en dat is geen straf in Brugge!Okumaya devam et

      Brugges… oh my heart

      Oh Brugge…. It is every bit as beautiful as I had imagined. My pictures actually really don’t do it justice. It’s magic- like in an old fairytale… cobblestone streets, and gingerbread houses, and horse drawn carriages clip clopping down the centuries old streets. Thee bitter ice cold wind creeping around the corner, but warm tea rooms and castle like hotels sanctuaries from the cold, blue skies.
      And two little girls with big smiles and very rosy cheeks.
      We arrived to the last flurry of unexpected snow, and a big blue sky emerged. Our hotel is beautiful. It is like a castle, and the girls have a loft room- their beds nestled amongst the rafters (literally). I will get more photos of the hotel tomorrow; but it is one of the most special places we have ever stayed.
      Bruges is a UNESCO world heritage site. People still live in original housing from the time of Napoleons reign. The locals speak Flemish (and we have picked up a few Flemish words- the kids love to say ‘Hallo’ and ‘Dank Je Wel’ (thank you) to everybody they meet, as it is often greeted with a surprised and very enthusiastic return greeting).
      Audrey has FINALLY dropped her cockney English accent (that took hold on the first day in England) but Olive has decided she loves the way the French speak, and insists on saying most of her English words in a slight French accent (along with many French words we often don’t understand). We are now called ‘mumma and father’ by her 😳🥴🤣).
      We toured the city today both by boat through the canals and by horse drawn cart (our horses name aptly was Napoleon). We will explore the city more tomorrow.
      I’ve decided we should move here and open a cafe. I’m sure everyone at home would be OK with that 😜. We saw a few divine places along the canal for sale today. I’m sure they are going cheap. The girls can teach us Flemish and French 😉
      This should be on everyone’s bucket list. It is a very special little part of the world 💖      Okumaya devam et

      Spring in our step

      First day of spring here and the weather turned it on. Bright blue skies for miles. We took full advantage and climbed to the top of the bell tower- 366 steps! It was windy, and tiny, and queasy-inducing for me… but the view was beautiful. It is the second tallest brick man made structure in Europe (beaten only by the cathedral in Cologne- the first place I ever experienced a gripping fear of heights… today was ironically the second…) there are 47 bells in the bell tower, and they seem to chime constantly. They used to be a way for the townsfolk to know what time of day it was (a different chime for wake up, start of the work day, lunchtime etc).
      We dragged the girls through a couple of beautiful churches and a Cathedral that was jaw dropping (it’s hard to appreciate how amazing these buildings are when you have seen 748 other spectacular churches in the last 10 days…) but the girls lit another candle. There is a lot of talk over here about the war, and how unsettled things seem. A lot of white ribbons on doors- signifying the want of peace. It’s a stark contrast to how idilic it all feels to us.
      We went to a very small but significant church here in Bruges, that holds the relic for a supposed piece of parchment with Christ’s blood on it. For a couple of hours each day that display the relic in a vacuum tube and you can walk past and have a look. The whole atmosphere, whether you are religious or not, is quite humbling, and feels like a very sacred space. The girls were fascinated, and asked lots of very intelligent questions that we could not answer (future Google time needed…)
      We finished off the day with another religious experience- the brewery museum. A very well done interactive museum that even the girls enjoyed. Auds got her photo on the big screen in the accompanying pub (a blurry photo will be attached 😄) and the man told us the legal age to drink beer here is 16! (All other alcohol 18…).
      A traditional dinner of Flemish stew, rabbit and a fish stew (all waaaY better than they sound). We will be sad to leave here tomorrow. It is utterly beautiful.      Okumaya devam et

      Da uns die Strecke zum nächsten geplanten Ziel zu lang war, haben wir 2 Nächte in Belgien verbracht. In Brügge un genau zu sein... Eine sehr süße und sehenswerte Stadt, die irgendwie wie eine Mischung aus Bayern und Amsterdam erscheint. Obwohl wir diese Stadt vorher garnicht auf dem Schirm hatten, war sie gefühlt die vollste und touristischste.Okumaya devam et

      Brügge sehen (und sterben?)

      Nein, keine Angst, so verrückt wie in dem berühmten Film (Brügge sehen und sterben) ist es dann doch nicht 😉. Aber mal von Anfang an: Nach dem aufregenden Festival dachte ich mir, dass mir eine ruhige Stadt wie Brügge genau richtig kommt und ich war mega gespannt, weil irgendwas muss ja an der Stadt sein, wenn ein Hollywood Film mit Collin Farrell gedreht wird, der sich nur um diese Stadt dreht… Und ja, schon der erste Eindruck ist wunderbar. 1. es gibt so unfassbar leckere viele Waffeln, dass ich wünschte, ich könnte endlos davon essen (4 habe ich immerhin im Laufe des Tages geschafft 😋). 2. Und mein Gott, ist diese Stadt schön, man weiß gar nicht, welche süßen kleinen Gassen und Wasserstraßen sich zuerst anschauen soll… Ich war hier auch im Diamantmuseum, im Brauereimuseum und im Schokomuseum, alles sehr sehenswert 😊. Ich verbrachte den ganzen Tag hier und genoss das wunderschöne Brügge, was zurecht auch Venedig des Nordens genannt wird. Mit einer Zigarre, meinem Buch und leckerem Essen auf dem Hauptplatz ließ ich den Tag ausklingen 🥰. Ich kann es echt verstehen, dass man über diese Stadt einen kompletten Hollywood Film dreht, untertrieben ist es definitiv nicht 😉.

      Mein kleines Fazit zu Belgien: verdammt diese Waffeln 🤤 (bzw. in Gent hatten die auch eine Spezialität namens Mastel, eine Art süßes Panini) und auch das Bier ist wirklich toll, neben den tollen Städten (auch Brüssel ist toll, auch wenn ich es diesmal nicht besucht habe). Ich habe meinen Aufenthalt hier sehr genossen und Brügge war hier ein Highlight für mich ☺️.

      Brügge

      Unser nächstes Ziel hieß Belgien, Brügge. Die Fahrt klappte wieder super. Tilda war fix eingeschlafen und wir fuhren über die Küstenstraße der Normandie Richtung Belgien. Am Campingplatz angekommen machte uns erneut eine zu enge Kurve Probleme, aber mit einer sympathischen Männertruppe war es kein Problem, sie schoben den Wohnwagen in nullkommanix auf unseren Stellplatz. Dieser war super groß. Wir packten alles aus und erkundeten die Gegend. So richtig überzeugte uns der Campingplatz aber nicht. Dieses Gefühl wurde abends bestärkt, als sich die Menschen zwei Stellplätze weiter so heftig anschrien, die dazu gehörigen Hunde laut herumbellten und das ganze sich fast zwei Stunden hinzog. Sowas hatten unsere sehr netten niederländischen Nachbarn in den letzten 36 Jahren campen nicht erlebt. Die Hoffnung war, dass es eine einmalige Sache war, da es die Abende zuvor laut der Niederländer nicht so eskalativ war. Am nächsten Tag kamen Marianne und Dieter uns besuchen und wir kauften vormittags ein, damit wir auch genügend zum Frühstück hatten und schön grillen konnten. Nach einem schönen Geburtstagsfrühstück machten wir uns auf den Weg nach Brügge. Super schöne und sehenswerte Stadt! Ein Schokogeschäft neben dem anderen….lecker. Und überall kleine Grachten. Und wir hatten dann noch Glück mit dem Wetter.
      Einen Tag später fuhren wir nach Oostende. Größere Stadt als wir dachten. Shoppen konnten wir dort auch etwas. Der Strand war sehr schön dort - Tilda hat es wieder sehr gefallen im Strand zu spielen. Als dann graue Wolken ankamen, machten wir uns mit einem Kaffeestopp in einem Café auf dem Rückweg.       Bonjour, Belgien!

      Breskens - Brügge (45km)
      Auch die Einreise nach Belgien verlief unbemerkt und wieder waren es zuerst die Autokennzeichen, die darauf hinwiesen. Denn selbst unsere „kustroute“ ging einfach weiter.🤷‍♀️ In Knokke bogen wir dann aber ins Hinterland ab, denn schließlich gilt es herauszufinden, ob es stimmt: „Brügge sehen und…“😉
      Um die Stadt in Ruhe zu erkunden, haben wir für zwei Nächte ein Hotelzimmer gebucht. Auch weil wir mal wieder Wäsche waschen mussten, aber der Plan ging nicht ganz auf. Während wir letztes Mal 5€ für eine Waschladung bezahlt hatten, wäre es hier nach Stückzahl gegangen (z.B. eine Unterhose 4,50€😱😅). Da haben wir lieber improvisiert.🤪
      Ein erster Erkundungsspaziergang hat schon gezeigt, wie sehenswert die Stadt ist. Wichtiger war heute schon mal das kulinarische Programm, denn weil wir nur kurz in Belgien sind, müssen die Spezialitäten schnell abgearbeitet werden. Heute schon geschafft: moules frites (Muscheln in Weißwein mit 🍟), lokales Bier und natürlich SCHOKOLADE!😋😊
      Zum Abschluss des ersten Tages genießen wir ein Glockenspielkonzert am Belfort.      Okumaya devam et

      Brugge sehen und… lieben 🥰

      Eine Stadt, die mich nicht erst seit dem Film „Brügge sehen und sterben“ in ihren Bann gezogen hat, sondern schon seit meiner Matura auf meiner Liste steht. Was soll ich sagen: wow! Die sicherlich schönste Stadt bislang. Wir brachen frühmorgens auf & wurden mit einem quasi Touri-freiem Morgen/Vormittag belohnt. Den ganzen Tag dort verbracht & ihn beendet mit einem ganz klaren: „Wir sehen uns bald wieder…“!! Schon alleine weil Jacqueline nicht dabei war & diese Stadt lieben würde…Okumaya devam et

      Brussels Day 2- Bruges

      Bruges! Last night I was talking to one of the girls that I am sharing a room with, and we decided that we’d go to Bruges today! Her name is Moniza and she’s solo travelling from New York! So we started the day off with a waffle. It only felt appropriate to have a Belgian waffle in Belgium. Then, we walked to see the Royal Palace of Brussels which didn’t really look like much. Then, we caught our train ti Bruges which was only about an hour long. We walked into the main village which was so cute, medieval, quaint, and fairytale-esque!! It was adorable. Most of the buildings were in built with medieval style architecture and it was so cute! We did a lot of just wandering around, we went to the Market Square (the main square) and did lots of exploring. Then we found a theatre that we decided to tour. It was super cool, and showed the many ins and outs of theatre- props, lighting, the loges, and more! We got to go under the stage as well which was cool. After, we grabbed some poké at a cute restaurant which actually was quite delicious! After that, we stumbled upon a little outdoor market type thing and browsed the many goods. Then we walked around the O.L.V-kerk museum for a bit, and then walked very far out from the main town. We got into more residential areas which was more underwhelming, but we were just talking lots so it didn’t really matter. After we reoriented ourselves, we walked around the Minnewaterpark and the surrounding park areas which had lots of greenery. When we felt very tired, we decided that it was time to head back to Brussels. When we got back, we did a little refresh and then headed out to find some dinner. We went to some wok place that was actually an abomination to asian food. I got some beef noodle with sweet chili sauce but they DOUSED my noodles in sauce and did not hold back. It was way too much sauce and was unpleasant to eat. After that, we headed to the Grand Place to see what it looked like lit up at night- stunning btw. We sat on some chairs that we found and just chatted until it got late, then went back to the hostel. On the way back, I got some fries with aioli sauce- I didn’t know that Belgium is known for their fries!

      Also attached is a picture of um a pus bubble? Anyone know what this is? It’s flattened now (writing this 5 days later) but I was concerned for a bit.      Okumaya devam et

      Ausflug nach Brügge

      Heute sind wir nach dem Frühstück und unserem Abwasch nach Belgien/Brügge gefahren. Merle hat den Tag an unserem Campingplatz mit Ihren neu gewonnenen Freunden verbracht. Die einfache Entfernung nach Brügge beträgt 34 Km und nach 45 Minuten waren wir in der Altstadt von Brügge und der Einkaufsbummel hat begonnen. Bei H&M waren Jule und Nora sofort erfolgreich und jeder hatte alle Hände voll bepackt mit sehr schönen Kleidungsstücken. Nach dem Einkaufsbummel haben wir uns dann mit leckeren Belgischen Waffeln gestärkt und noch eine kleine Runde durch die Altstadt gedreht. Danach sind wir wieder zu unserem Campingplatz gefahren und waren gegen 17 Uhr wieder zurück. Am Abend gab es dann leckeres Abendessen vom Grill. Die Kids waren anschließend noch auf dem Platz unterwegs. Um 23 Uhr wurde dann die Nachtruhe eingeläutet.Okumaya devam et
