  • Winding roads bring us to Arenal

    26. februar 2023, Costa Rica ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Waking up this morning in Arenal. Our base for the next 3 days Los Lagos resort, is at the base of this stunning volcano. Almost always hidden in clouds; we're somewhere around 2500 ft ASV. We had our first taste of the rain forest on a Safari float on the Penas Blancas River and our first sloth and howler monkey sightings. We're told there will be many more. This weather is so interesting. Just surrounding the volcano, its hot and humid one minute... then the clouds dump buckets of rain for a minute or two and then the sun shines again. 5 minutes away from here, it's all sun. The volcano seems to have its own weather.Les mer

  • SLOTHs!!!

    27. februar 2023, Costa Rica

An early morning start let us see these crazy cute and shy creatures. We trekked a little way into the reserve behind our eagle eye guides! It's unbelievable how they can spot the sloths and different birds and creatures amongst all the vegetation. All the portrayals of sloths are true.. they move very slowly and are mostly seen curled up into hairy balls. We were really lucky to see this one big guy hanging around, all stretched out. We had a nice lunch in La Fortuna, then back to Los Lagos to the hot springs for the afternoon. This is my kind of "swim up bar" in the hot springs! Only 104 degrees! Finally made it to dinner out! ( first 2 nights were room service and sleep!) taking a couple nights to catch up on all the biz, motion and commotion!) 🤪Les mer

  • Volcano Trek and Toucan Hunt

    28. februar 2023, Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

The beautiful Toucans were waiting to say good morning! They are just the most fun bird ! Their beaks are more than a third of their body size. We already know their sound and can pick them out when we hear the chirps. We hiked up to the Volcano look out. This ancient ruins for past worship of the volcano felt very real and symbolic. We could imagine past worshippers sitting here praying to the gods of the
Volcano. The hot springs were a great way to enjoy the afternoon before heading back to La Fortuna for drinks and dinner. Ooh La Forchetta was an amazing Italian restaurant! It was a great last day in La Fortuna at Los Lagos.

  • Lake Crossing to MonteVerde

    1. mars 2023, Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We travelled through so much weather today! It started with a 30 min lake crossing, some fog and choppy water. Once on the other side we had a 1.5 hour drive up through the thickest clouds to about 4600 ft ASV. Then we broke through the clouds and into the beautiful sunny MonteVerde range. The weather around these mountain ranges is just incredible! They all seem to have their own systems. We spent the afternoon strolling around the cute little town, had lunch in a "treehouse" and opted into a rain forest night walk. The biodiversity of these forests is immense, and quite serious business!Les mer

  • Cloud Forest, Coffee & Cacao

    2. mars 2023, Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Another early start in the cloud forest this morning. This was mostly to learn about the various climates and sub cultures living in this very diverse eco system. It's beautiful and I wished I could bottle the scents coming from the different fauna here! The hummingbirds were such a nice surprise. We enjoyed a really interesting tour in the afternoon; all about coffee production, cacao and sugar cane. I made molasses candy that is so good, it's alot like maple taffy. Monte Verde has some great spots for lunch and dinner, another full day!Les mer

  • El Tigre Waterfalls and a Horse!

    3. mars 2023, Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

What a hike! 8km's up down and all around a canyon, with 7 stunning waterfalls, a few (undisclosed 😉) hanging bridges, amazing vegetation and then a horseback ride... It's been a long time since either of us were on a horse. We strolled around Monte Verde for our last afternoon here, capped it off with a delicious local rice dish and rooftop sunset at the hotel! Feeling very PURA Vida❣️Les mer

  • Off the Mountains, Onto the Coast

    4. mars 2023, Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

We drove four hours today to reach the coast, traveling for a bit on the PanAmerica highway. What a beautiful site to see the ocean, and feel the extreme heat here! We just relaxed by the pool and had a nice dinner at our new spot for the next 4 nights. The Falls at Manuel Antonio.Les mer

  • Monkeys and Beaches

    5. mars 2023, Costa Rica ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

It's so fun to walk in a new little town, but especially when it has monkeys! We just explored this morning along the beach wall and walked the National Park in the afternoon. It is very steamy, and part of the park walk is a dip in one of the beautiful protected beaches. We saw more monkeys and sloths, and the most beautiful gigantic plants. There are so many spots to choose from for dinner, this is the toughest decision of the day.Les mer

  • ATV's and a Wateringhole

    6. mars 2023, Costa Rica ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We had a fun ( dirty) ride on the ATV's. We drove to Rainmaker park, a really pretty trail system that has several natural waterholes to cool off in. We also drove through these palm tree farms that go on for miles and miles... we saw them harvesting the palm nuts, they export for palm oil production. Tonight was a first for us.... we went out for drinks and dinner but it was so hot, we came back after one drink to get back in the pool and dinner poolside. The humidity is really high here!Les mer

  • Nauyaca Waterfall

    7. mars 2023, Costa Rica ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

Spent the day hiking and swimming in this magnificent tiered waterfall. Hot, humid and so worth the climb! Our guides were alot of fun and showed off with some incredible high jumps. I think Mother Nature was born in Costa Rica💚Les mer

  • Final stop in Costa Rica

    8. mars 2023, Costa Rica ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We travelled to Los Suenos in Jaco for our last spot in Costa Rica. Time to enjoy a little down time. We're laughing at all the room we have, it feels like awhile since we've had this kind of space. There are some serious boats here at this marina village.Les mer

  • Hello Peru!

    11. mars 2023, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

A long but smooth travel day and we are in Peru. Cusco is cooler, bustling, lively, and just a few quick hints on our drive to the hotel tell us we are in for some very interesting days. The history here is not just decades or centuries old, but of a whole civilization's past.Les mer

  • Coca Tea for the Win

    12. mars 2023, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Lots of Coca tea and slow walking, by 10 am we were good to go. At 12,000 ft ASV it took a minute to adjust. And so grateful we did adjust quickly, cannot waste a minute in this interesting city! We walked up, down and all around the Plaza de Armas. We just love a walk like this, where around every corner there is something new, and tons of narrow little alleys full of surprises. We stumbled upon their Sunday market.. wow.. We had lunch overlooking one corner of the plaza and dinner overlooking another corner. I think you could stay here for weeks and not eat at the same place twice! We will NOT be having guinea pig or alpaca though! Tomorrow we start touring with Alfredo.Les mer

  • Inca History is Amazing

    13. mars 2023, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

If today's tour is the beginning of what we're going to see and learn... well our minds are already blown. The history and stories are so interesting, but trying to grasp how the Inca's accomplished the construction of the temples and palaces we're seeing is just extraordinary. Alfredo showed us 3 temples and a palace this morning, then we enjoyed lunch and walked around a few ornate churches on our own. Our balcony was the perfect spot to cap off a great day!Les mer

  • What a day! Part 1

    14. mars 2023, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

How can we fit so much into one day!? Alfredo picked us up bright and early at 7am to make our way to Chincero. It was a rainy start, but we're so grateful it cleared in the morning. First stop was a textile demo of the alpaca fur. It was really interesting to see how they colour the fur with all the natural elements. From there we visited the Chincero sacred ruins. The many levels of this temple are fascinating. Some entries for the common people, and the large ornate doors for royals to enter the grounds. From here they held various ceremonies to worship the sun and water as well as a burial site. All these temples and ruins are from the 1500's.Les mer

  • What a day! Part 2

    14. mars 2023, Peru

The scenic drive through the sacred valley is beautiful with the snow cap mountains, and emerald green range. Next stop, Himalayan salt wells. There are 3700 salt wells, owned by the people of the surrounding village. The only mountain to offer salt water is here and these wells have been established since pre Inca days so that's around 1000BC - operating continuously. From here we drove to Moray which is an agriculture wonder. Each ring is a terrace that was used to grow food. Each level has its own microclimate that the Incas used to cultivate different types of fruits, vegetables and plants. All of this was built in the 1400-1500's without anything more than rocks, and chisels. They are so precise and perfect, it's hard to imagine how this is accomplished? It was a hike down and around this place. We then enjoyed a great typical Peruvian lunch.Les mer

  • What a day! Part 3

    14. mars 2023, Peru

Ollantaytambo is the last occupied Inca village. They are all descendants of original Inca people and choose to maintain this simpler life. It's a pretty large village with many streets running off each other. Of course, the ruins here are a major draw for them, and many maintain their livelihood from the visitors. This is an engineering feat! We climbed to the top and all around this great site. We couldn't help but just marvel at the perfection of their craftsmanship and wonder at how they could possibly have moved these massive stones to built such a magnificent place.Les mer

  • What a day! Part 4

    14. mars 2023, Peru ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

After all this touring, we're ready to relax and enjoy the train ride from Ollantaytambo to Aguascalientes that will be the base for our visit to Machu Picchu tomorrow. What a funky little place!

  • The Magical Machu Picchu

    15. mars 2023, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

While we had an idea what we would see today, nothing can compare to the beauty that is Machu Picchu! We boarded our bus at 8am to take us up to the entrance. Even the ride was breathtaking. Alfredo did an amazing job of guiding us through the ruins with his passion for this magical place. Pachamama was with us for sure, giving us this beautiful sunny morning! The ruins are spectacular and it's an enchanting place imagining the life that once was here, over 500 years ago. We were so spoiled, having the place almost to ourselves. There could normally be 3000 people here! Such a special day, we'll remember for a long time. And now the train back to Ollantaytambo and drive back to Cusco.Les mer

  • Funky Little Town

    15. mars 2023, Peru ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

Aguas Calientes is a really interesting little town. 4500 people live here and all are for the tourism of Machu Picchu. It is lively with so many restaurants, shops, hot springs, hotels, hostels and of course the bustle of all the excited tourists going up to and coming down from the mountain.
The river dividing the two sides is rushing with rapids, can be heard from all over town and is the beginning of the Amazon River. There are statues along the boulevard of the 13 famous Inca Kings. Everyone was so happy to see the tourists back. Next time we will visit the hot springs.

  • Challenge of Rainbow Mountain

    16. mars 2023, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

5am pick up and we're off again! After a 2 hour drive and a nice breakfast stop, it's time to really challenge ourselves! It's a nail biting 40 min switchback ride to the base. Apparently rail guards are not a thing here 🤪 What sounds like a nice hike ( it's called "Rainbow Mountain after all!") is actually an 8km hike up to 17,060 ft ASL with pitches varying from 25-40. The high altitude makes for a very strenuous climb. BUT, the reward at the top, is well, just unbelievable!? We've never seen anything like it! There was a shaman there when we reached the top, giving thanks to the mountain gods. The 8km trek back down is much easier. Then celebratory lunch, and back through some interesting towns to reach Cusco again. At the end of the day, we are tired but proud we made this trek. Zoom in to see the dots (people) on mountain.Les mer
