Wow...old history in the old town...walked lots today...up steps to the cross on hill and around the coast line path which was stunning to the first beach...all up 15km on the watch.

The old church on hill was built in 1214.
The old building basement may have been 400ad that we first walked up to the old town...so hard to remember 😔

Had some free time to chill around the pool on boat before dinner and a show.

I had the universal undies/togs swim but v has the photos of that 😎Read more
Traveler Gosh, building are really ancient decent weather for such an uphill walk.....Dubai will be the absolute reverse. Xx

Today heralds the beginning of a new chapter in our European adventure! We took our washing to a laundry and for 10 euros got a basket of washing done, dried and folded beautifully!
We then climbed the Bell Tower, visited the Treasury and the Cathedral, all in the Old Town which is encapsulated within the Palace of the Emporer Dioclesian.
We then met our friends, Rosemary & Neville, who flew in from Dubai late last night. We had a long lunch with them at a little Pizzeria very near our Apartment in the Old Town.
Neville had researched where to eat tonight and chose a fabulous restaurant overlooking the sea - a 2 star Michelin restaurant. The food and wine was as expected - superb.
Tomorrow we are doing a private tour (10 hours) of Plitvice NP with Rosemary & Neville.

Traveler Reckon 10 euro for washing was a bargain. Why did I pack so much. Restaurant sounds great. We will probably do a a mid arvo lunch /dinner today at a little Italian place that's 4th. generation. Good reviews but no star. Met up with the Tulletos, Suzanno and Dunkano yesterday for drinks, nibbles then dinner. They are leading us astray eith the drinking.

Traveler Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass Split eine so schöne "Alt"-Stadt hat/ist. Wir sind vor über 10 Jahren durch einen Vorort gefahren, der sehr schmutzig war.

MobilLoewe Was wir während der rund 7 Kilometer Busfahrt (der Bus modern und sauber) von Stobreč nach Split gesehen haben, sah gut aus. Aber jede größere Stadt hat so seine Ecken. Altstadt top, die Kreuzfahrer kommen nicht umsonst her. 😏

Diokletianpalast

"Der Diokletianspalast gehört zu einem der am besten erhaltenen Denkmäler römischer Baukunst in der Welt. Der kaiserliche Palast wurde als Kombination einer luxuriösen Villa – Sommerresidenz und eines römischen Militärlagers (Castrum) errichtet, durch zwei Hauptstraßen in vier Teile aufgeteilt. Der südliche Teil des Palastes war in dieser Aufteilung für den Kaiser vorgesehen, mit seiner Wohnung und der dazugehörenden amtlichen und religiösen Zeremonie, während der nördliche Teil der Unterkunft seiner kaiserlichen Wache – Soldaten, Dienern, als Lagerräume u.ä. diente. Der Palast ist ein rechteckiger Bau (215 x 180 Meter), mit vier großen Ecktürmen und dazwischen, entlang den vier Mauern, mit jeweils vier kleineren Abwehrtürmen." Der Diokletianpalast stellt einen Teil der Altstadt dar. Trotz der vielen Touristen eine wunderschöne Atmosphäre. Wir sind total angetan von der Umgebung.

Sehr viele Menschen mit ganz kleinen Nasen, die so gerade eben die Sonnenbrille halten. 🤗Read more

Split Altstadt

Heute so sind wir in einen modernen Linienbus gestiegen und vom Campingplatz die knapp 7 Kilometer für 2 Euro pro Person an den Rand der Altstadt von Split gefahren.

Drei Ziele haben wir uns ausgewählt, Diokletianpalast, die Kathedrale und das silberne Tor.

Schnell waren wir beeindruckt von den wunderbaren Gebäuden, Gassen und Plätzen. Aber auch hier drängelten sich die unzähligen geführten Reisegruppen der Kreuzfahrer durch die Gassen. 🙈

Eine Attraktion durften wir erleben, eine Hochzeit in der Altstadt, sehr fröhlich, wunderbare Stimmung.Read more

A night and a morning in Split.

Split is a large city with a well-preserved centre built inside the walls of the immense palace of roman emperor Diocletian (ca 300 AD). The quality of roman construction is stunning.

After a quick dinner in our room near the harbour, we wander by night in the narrow streets inside the palace. Magic of the lighting, of the grand 'bronze', 'iron', 'silver', and 'golden' gates. The town is quietly taken over by country music singers and wandering couples.

At morning the buildings open, and we marvel through temples and cellars, the incredible archtecture, from bricks and vaults to sculptures. Why did Diocletian decorate the ceiling with the forty figures of human emotions and, at the same time, execute thousands of Christians?

As the morning moves on, the crowd grows; time to go. We are filled with happy emotions as we set foot on the ferry to Hvar Island.Read more

Übernachtet am Strand unterhalb der Galerie des bekannten Bildhauer Meštrović, dem ehemaligen Kastell von Capogrosso, machten wir uns auf in die Altstadt.

Split (italienisch Spalato, entstanden aus griechisch ἀσπάλαθος, aspálathos) ist die zweitgrößte Stadt Kroatiens. Sie ist die größte Stadt Südkroatiens und gilt daher im Volksmund als „Hauptstadt Dalmatiens“.

Spalato is our last stop. We disembarked and took a nice walking tour of the city center. The atmosphere is fascinating with many amazing sightseeing. First, we stopped at the Diocleziano palace. It's a large complex with several ancient buildings, remains of the original palace complex.Read more

Old town of Split

Split is the second largest city in Croatia and is popularly known as the "capital of Dalmatia".

The city had a population of around 180,000 in 2011, which was almost 4% of the entire population of Croatia. Split is an important port city and the city's origins can be traced back to Diocletian's Palace.

The city center of Split, including Diocletian's Palace, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. It is located on the south coast of the Split peninsula and is formed by the old Diocletian's Palace, from which the city developed, and the medieval city extension to the west.

Directly on the sea along the harbor bay in the old town lies the Riva, a promenade that is probably the most famous landmark of the city.

The old town is manageable and very easy to explore on foot. There are a few tourists at this time of year, but not so many that there is no place to sit in a café.

All in all, it is a small, winding, clean old town that is beautifully designed and, with the Riva, really offers a little gem. I would definitely not stay in Split for too long, but it is perfect for a day tripRead more

Split and Mostar

We caught the ferry from Hvar to Split, an interesting old town on the west coast of Croatia. We wentt on a quad bike tour exploring the mountains and valleys near the borders of Croatia and Bosnia. Then we joined a tour to the towns of Mostar and Postelj in Bosnia to see the famous bridge and waterfalls of Kravica. Lots of tourists unfortunately, but still some awesome sights and scenery.Read more
