    Day 0-Porto

    23. august 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Every couple of days I plan to make a short post on this newly discovered blog app (Find Penguins) with a few photos, to keep family and friends up-to-date on our five week travels through Portugal, Spain and England.

We arrived easily in Porto, Portugal after 3 flights. Porto is a beautiful and colorful city so we spent a day walking around. Despite a fair number of hills, Christine was able to do quite well. That will be good since she will be heading off on her own tomorrow. Our friend Georgie and I will be heading off on our two week hike on the Portuguese Camino. Georgie is our sheep farming friend from western Pennsylvania whom I’ve helped out over the years with her lambing season.

For the bad news: Despite preparing to head out for a two week hike, for the first time in my life people are offering me their seats on the subway. Am I starting to look that old?

  • Day 1-Porto to Matosinhos

    25. august 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

My friend Georgie and I have started a two week hike on the Portuguese Camino de Santiago. We will walk the first two days along the coast and then head inland. The Camino always has such variety….beaches, rocky coasts, and wonderful small villages. We are trying to recreate the wonderful experience Georgie, Christine, and I had a few years back when we hiked the main route in Spain. Christine is having her own adventure by traveling around Portugal on her own and will meet up with us in certain places.Læs mere

  • Day 2-Matosinhos to Vila de Conte

    26. august 2023, Portugal ⋅ 🌬 72 °F

Today was wonderful, but it was our first long day on the Camino. The walk was 13.5 miles along the coast. It had tremendous variety and lots of descriptive markers along the way. Most of the hikers started in Porto, like us. We spent the evening in a lovely town of Vila de Conte…..lots of history and medieval architecture. I find, like I did several year ago, walking the Spanish Camino, you laugh a lot with your walking buddies, especially Georgie and I.Læs mere

  • Day 3-Vila de Conte to Rates

    27. august 2023, Portugal ⋅ 🌬 73 °F

On Sunday we took a side route to go from the coastal route to the central route. It was marked on my phone app, but there were no signs along the trail. However, the app was excellent and we had no trouble following the route through all sorts of varied landscapes. For the first 2 miles we were walking along an ancient aqueduct. It was absolutely beautiful and the architecture was amazing. Portugal has so many walls. Dale enjoys popping his camera above a wall to snap a photo of what is on the other side.Læs mere

  • Day 4-Rates to Barcelos

    28. august 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Georgie and I started our hike on the Central Camino with a 10 mile walk. We met up with pilgrim Lucas, from Brazil, and walked with him all day. Not only was Lucas very pleasant, but his Portuguese came in handy. We met Christine in Barcelos and the 4 of us toured around this beautiful town before we went to our separate accommodations.Læs mere

  • Day 5-Barcelos to Lugar de Cargo

    29. august 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Today we walked most of the day with a young woman from Slovakia who was also a geographer. We discovered a great little pond with a bridge that the locals used as a beach. Finally, we came across a little concession stand that a local set up for the walkers. It included snacks and beer…..everything for 1 euro. What a great offering by locals. Tonight Dale’s bed is across from Lucas, the fellow from Brazil we walked with all day yesterday.Læs mere

  • Day 6-Lugar de Cargo to Ponte de Lima

    30. august 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Wednesday was mostly uneventful, but it was a beautiful 8 mile day…..lots of vineyards and small towns. We ran into our Brazilian friend, Lucas and two California ladies. We have seen them on a regular basis for the last 4 days. Since it was a short day, we had plenty of time to explore Ponte de Lima, a beautiful town with a medieval bridge.Læs mere

  • Day 7-Ponte de Lima to Rubiaes

    31. august 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

We are averaging 12 miles of walking each days, so this was an average day, except we had 1,000’ of climbing over a mountain. We decided to start early at 6:00 am, in the dark, but were treated to a blue and full moon over the medieval bridge. The 3 mile “slog” up the mountain was difficult, but we were rewarded with a beautiful panorama. After the climb most of the pilgrims stopped by one of the few restaurants of the day. The cold cider and grilled chicken was fabulous. We talked to Ricardo, from Portugal. He volunteered with the Pope’s visit to Portugal a month earlier and had many stories to relate. He even sent me his best picture of the pope. We have also been running into a whole gaggle of Brazilian pilgrims each day. Tonight, our hostel is a beautiful stone home that sleeps only 7 pilgrims.Læs mere

  • Day 8-Rubias to Valenca

    1. september 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

Today was a pretty standard 12 mile day. We did walk the morning with a PT specialist from Pittsburgh….small world. As you walk, day after day, you meet up with folks again and again that walk at a similar pace. It is special every time you reconnect. At the end of the day we entered the medieval fortified town of Valenca. We also find we visit tons of churches along the way.Læs mere

  • Christine’s Update

    1. september 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

While Dale & Georgie have been walking 10+ miles per day, I’ve been going at a more leisurely pace, roughly 5.2 miles per day. After saying goodbye to them in Barcelos, I traveled east to the Atlantic and the port city of Viana do Castelo.

Viana is a very active city with one very spectacular viewpoint, the Basilica de Santa Luzia. Of course it’s at the top of another hill; this one with 567 steps or for the hill climbing adverse walker like me, another funicular!
A huge festival celebrating the local cultural traditions just finished, but there were special displays and events still going on. Many folks were wearing traditional clothing from the past, items they were wearing into the 1950’s.

One of the museums I visited was a chocolate museum. It was a hands on, interactive experience including making my own chocolate concoction! It tasted awful until I added a ton of brown sugar crystals!

  • Day 9-Valenca to Porrino

    2. september 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

Today we crossed over into Spain and lost an hour. Consequently, we decided to leave early and walked through the old walled city in the early morning. Tons of folks start the Portuguese Camino at the Spanish border so they can hike the last 100 kilometer and acquire a certificate. We couldn’t believe the number of walkers today. I have included a couple of short video clips. One was a couple of guys who played the bagpipes in exchange for a donation.

In the evening we got a chance to catch a downtown local bike race.

  • Day 10-Porrino to Redondela

    3. september 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Today will be our next to last day on the C amino. It was Sunday and we almost caught a mass at a beautiful small church in a little village. We see many Catholic shrines along the way (see photo). Through the small towns you can find some great old houses and some modern ones, usually with wonderful gardens. We often arrive at our destination by early afternoon and that gives us plenty of time in the evening to explore the town. Later in the day we walked around the gorgeous town of Redondela and even took a local tram to the beach for an hour or so. Two big climbs and 12 miles tomorrow.Læs mere

  • Day 12-Redondela to Ponteverdra

    4. september 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

The last day of our Camino hike was 12 miles. However, it included 2 challenging climbs of several miles. We finished up walking 140 miles in all. Today had great scenery with forests, stone bridges and quaint small villages. In one small town, at a cafe, we got into a conversation with a local woman. She was thrilled we were visiting her town. I conversed with her in my best Spanish and when we left she kissed my hand. That doesn’t happen often. We toured around town in the evening and at dinner 3 Spaniards said they remembered us from the trail. In fact one lady was so impressed to see two elderly folks hiking she took a few pictures……so nice (attached). Every day you see folks you run into often. Once again today we encountered Tracey, a British women, We have seen Tracey every day for the last week.Læs mere

  • Day 13-Bus to Lisbon

    5. september 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

Today we made our way to Santiago de Compostela and took an all day bus ride to meet up with my wife Christine. My seat number on the bus was 49. Well….the bus only had 48 seats. That caused a lot of laughter in the back of the bus. Fortunately, the bus was not full. What amazed us most was we rode the bus for the first 2 and 1/2 hours and realized we had walked all that way through the various towns we passed through on the bus. After arriving in Lisbon, we caught a train out to a busy and lovely town of Sintra. It is a very busy tourist town so it was quite a shock for Georgie and I after the tranquility of walking the Camino for the last couple of weeks. We met up with Christine who found a lovely Air B&B that had a lovely garden patio, a couple of young cats, and a great view. Afterwards we went out to a lovely restaurant near our place.Læs mere

  • Day 14-Sintra - First Day

    6. september 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

The three of us spent the day exploring the ancient and lovely town of Sintra….beautiful architecture and wonderful history. In the afternoon we explored a Moorish Castle sitting on a hilltop that was designed to protect Lisbon. Georgie and I decided to walk down to town from the castle. Very nice hike.Læs mere

  • Day 15-Sintra Day 2

    7. september 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Today was a fairly leisurely day in the historic Portugal town of Sintra. We explored a little more on our own in the morning and then visited a former palace on another mountaintop nearby. It was quite impressive, but the only site I have ever seen so overrun with tourists is the Sistine Chapel. Many cities are experiencing tourism overload because of general tourism and cruise shop visitors. Sintra has to be in that group. We are heading into Lisbon tomorrow, doing a little touring, and getting ready for our Saturday flight. Georgie will be heading back to Pittsburgh and we will be heading to England.Læs mere

  • Day 16 - Lisbon, Portugal

    8. september 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Today was the last day of out Portugal and Spain trip. Our friend Georgie will be heading back home to her farm in Western PA. Dale and Christine will be heading to England to meet up with their friends Jim and Suzanne.

Dale and Christine have been to Lisbon before, but not Georgie. Since we only had a few hours to visit Lisbon, we took one of the “pay as you will” walking tours we have done in other cities. As usual, it was several hours, had a great guide and covered lots of spots you would not discover on your own. On the tour we spoke to a woman from Ukraine. She provided a humane perspective on the war and thanked us personally for the support the US has provided to Ukraine.

We will start a new blog for our trip to England. Here is the link:
