We departed Sevilla this afternoon for Barcelona, where we'll stay overnight at the airport to catch an early flight to Marrakech for our Moroccan Tour.

  • Hello Morocco

    February 10, 2024 in Morocco ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Arrived in Marrakech where we were met by the tour driver and taken to our hotel. After checking in, we walked a few blocks down to the local mall, where we had a proper Moroccon lunch of pastilla and tajine.

Meeting the rest of the group tonight and then the tour starts in the morning.

  • Marrakech to Casablanca

    February 11, 2024 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Today we traveled up to Casablanca, made famous by Humphrey Bogart in the film 'Casablanca'.

We then visited the stunning Hassan II mosque, which has the tallest minaret
and the third largest mosque in the world, it can hold 25,000 worshipers at
    any one time.

The tour surprised me with a big birthday cake... nice touch. Although I was trying to sneak through without anyone noticing...

    February 13, 2024 in Morocco ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Today we head out to Chefchaouen. But just outside of Meknes we stopped at the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the largest archeological site in Morocco. UNESCO-listed, the site dates back to AD40 and once ruled the entire Roman province of Mauritania.

The mosaics are amazing and very well preserved despite being exposed to the elements since they were excavated in the early 20th century.

  • Chefchaouen

    February 13, 2024 in Morocco ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

After exploring the Roman ruins, we headed on to Chefchaouen. High up in the Rif mountains, Chefchaouen boasts a beautiful blue door and white walled medina (original town centre) that was originally a Berber post. The main square is the heart of Chefchaouen, with the Kasbah (built back in the 18th century), the central mosque and lots of cafes.Read more

  • Chefchaouen to Fes

    February 14, 2024 in Morocco ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Spent the morning in Chefchaouen and walked up to the Spanish Mosque to get another great view of this beautiful city.

We then drove south to Fes, the oldest and largest medieval city in the world. It was a really long drive, so we just chilled in the afternoon to rest up for a special dinner and show. Great food and excellent entertainment...Read more

  • Fez

    February 15, 2024 in Morocco ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Spent the day exploring Fez to see the souks (markets), tanneries and potteries. The markets were a complicated maze of activity, easy to get lost.

  • Fes to Midelt

    February 16, 2024 in Morocco ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

This morning we journeyed over the Moyen Atlas to Midelt. Along the way we stopped at the small town of Ifran, a resort town built by the French early in the 20th century. It can snow up here in the winter and the pace looks like a ski resort.

A bit further up the road we found a band of monkeys that were hoping for a treat.

We continued on to Midelt, where we had a chance to visit a local Berber family home and catch a glimpse of their way of life. It was fascinating to talk to their son, who spoke very good English that he picked up watching American movies.

  • Erg Chebbi

    February 17, 2024 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today drove out to the Erg Chebbi dunes located near the remote frontier town of Merzouga. The dunes are renowned for their incredible height and size, some reaching heights of 150 metres!

We arrived at the Berber camp where we were staying in tents... overnight... in the cold desert. After unpacking, we jumped on our trusty camels to watch the sunset from the top of the dunes. I was amazed (and thankful) that camels can navigate steep sand dunes while carrying a fat Australian tourist.

After sunset, we arrived back at the camp for an authentic feed and music. It was a great evening, but by the time we went to bed the wind had picked up and it was a bit noisy in the tents. But all part of the adventure.

  • Todra Gorge

    February 18, 2024 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

After a restless night (trying to sleep) in the desert, we shook the sand out of all our clothes and headed onward to Todra Gorge. This 1,600m gorge is hemmed in on all sides by vertical limestone cliffs and is called Morocco’s Grand Canyon.

After lunch we visited the village rug co-operative where we watched how they made the authentic Berber rugs and carpets.

We headed out in the morning for Ait Benhaddou via Ouarzazate, we stopped for a tour of the Atlas Film Studios, famous for films such as Gladiators, The Last Temptation of Christ, Living Daylights and Game of Thrones. It was fascinating to see the sets and how they were made.

The guide also worked as a film extra and assisted with the cameras, so he showed us some of the tricks they use in films. The result was our starring in our own mini version of Cleopatra... good fun!

  • A Day in Essaouira

  • A Moroccan Cooking Class

    February 21, 2024 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Being die-hard foodies, how could we pass up this opportunity in Essaouira? A very unique experience where we spent the evening in the family home and cooked dinner for everyone.

First, we wen to the markets to buy fresh vegetables and.. uh... chicken. When I say fresh, you basically choose the chook that looks the healthiest, determined I think by how much it runs around (trying to avoid being dinner). It's weighed, then... um... processed into the the select chicken pieces you would normally buy in Woolies... just much fresher.

The interesting part for me was the mechanical chicken plucker... I never even knew that was a thing. But for you chicken lovers, no more slaving in a hot kitchen plucking feathers from your dinner... you can buy them on Amazon. Go on... you know you need one.

Anyway, we had a great time with the family and I have to say that I am not just a brilliant hollywood actor, but a great Moroccan chef. Well... maybe the couple did a few things... but it was delicious and we have the recipes now... if only we had a kitchen... and a chook...

  • Final Days in Marrakech

    February 25, 2024 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

After the tour, we stayed a few days in a riad (classic Morrocan hotel) in the middle of the Medina. Literally, we walk 50 meters in we're in the midst of the markets. Getting up in the morning wasn't a problem as the mosque next door had their 6:30am call to prayers.

So we spent 3 days just getting lost in the maze of markets, something I think everyone needs to experience. I'm going to miss the hustle and bustle, the motor bikes racing down the narrow lanes, dodging the donkeys and carts, and the hundreds, if not thousands, of sellers vying for your attention as a gullible tourist.

And of course, the food... OMG! I shall miss the vegetable cous-cous and Harira soup... and tajines... and pastillas...

Leaving Morocco will leave an empty place in my heart... I guess we'll just have to come back
