      2. Tag Sani Lodge

      Die letzte Nacht war ungewohnt. Es war sehr warm und sehr laut. Die ganze Nacht hört man Insekten, Vögel und Affen. Ich habe trotzdem sehr gut geschlafen. Um 6.00 gab es Frühstück und danach sind wir gleich los zu unserem ersten Ausflug. . Mit dem Paddelboot ging es durch den See und durch einen Nebenarm bis zur Anlegestelle für den Aussichtsturm. Von dort aus mussten wir laufen. Es sind wohl nur 700m, aber weil es so viel zu entdecken gibt, haben wir wir lange gebraucht Gut dass wir Gummistiefel haben. Die Wege sind sehr matschig. Victor hat uns viel gezeigt und erklärt. Der Aussichtsturm ist 35m hoch und der Blick ist fantastisch. Nach dem Mittagessen gab es eine kleine Pause um Energie zu tanken für die Nachmittags Wanderung. Das Wetter war super heute. Sehr sonnig und warm mit einer relativ hohen Luftfeuchtigkeit. Dieser Tag entsprach ziemlich genau dem was ich mir von einem Dschungel Tag erhofft hatte. Es gefällt mir wahnsinnig gut hier.Read more

      In the dark ... Goodbye Napo

      Sunrise over the Napo River means only one thing, that we've already been travelling a bit over an hour to get here. That is, leaving in the dark and paddle boating down the little stream in the dark. And I really mean dark, I thought they would use headlamps or torches to navigate, but there was none of that. Just the pitch blackness of the night in the forest, winding around tight corners and hearing the scraping of the extremely low water level causing the branches and logs to rub against the bottom of the canoe.

      The only help in the dark that would assist with the navigation was a lining of glow worms along both edges of the stream. Like little stars in the water showing us the way. Unfortunately it was impossible to get a picture at that time of day.

      Like the day we arrived we walked a short distance to get to the motorboat that would take us 80km upstream back to Coca to catch the plane back to Quito. This time it was a bright sunny day which meant we got to enjoy the view with the blinds up. Catching the sight of the river and the people living and working along the river banks this time.       Second Clay Lick

      Let's try our luck again. This time however it was deep in the forest instead of by the water. So we trekked from the National Park entrance about 30 to 45 minutes before reaching the established area. This looked very different to the other one and was more a clearing in the forest. Unfortunately nothing was there when we arrived, so we started to wait. After a short time we could hear some macaws above us in the trees. We couldn't see them from inside the shelter, but they were there and we were hopeful they would come down.

      But what happened is the monkeys decided to come on by instead and literally they all flew off at once.

      So we went out and got to enjoy watching the monkeys nearby hanging out upside down in the trees. Looked to be a family unit with a little baby on the back of the mother. Wooly monkeys, long orange brown fur and a strong big tail.

      After they left though, we went back to wait for the Macaws and Parrots once more. Most of us falling asleep in the bird hide, a pre-lunch siesta. But that's what we did, we waited hopefully for them to return. Eventually one of more did, but back staying high in the trees out of sight. We could see their shadows as they flew back and forth in the trees above us. It was about 2 hours of this and we figured it was time to leave as it had been too long now. But just as we thought that, one of them came down to the ground to start to drink. Once that first brave, and thirsty, macaw came down the rest began to follow. All up there were about 11 at different moments that came back and forth to have a drink. Smaller parrots also came down, safety in numbers it seems.

      Then as quickly as they came, they left again. And that was time for us to get out of the heat ourselves.      Read more

      Seguimos recorriendo La Amazonía y fotografiando especies a lo largo de la cuenca del río Napo, uno de los afluentes directos del gran Amazonas. La increíble diversidad biológica se nota simplemente poniendo atención a los sonidos del bosque y claro que uno se encuentra constantemente con animales que jamás habíamos visto, pero nada como tener delante al mono Saky del Napo, exclusivo de esta región selvática del este de Ecuador y norte de Perú.Read more

      Bien entrados en la Amazonía llegamos a esta ciudad para seguir compartiendo con amigos, Esta vez nos recibiría Raquel y su familia en el jardín botánico, un lugar para resguardarse en el calor del coca, como también se le llama a esta ciudad. Pasamos muchos días pues también pudimos hacer muchas vivencias, inclusive en lugares cercanos al coca.Read more

      Monkeying around

      We were resting in our cabin in the middle of the Amazon jungle when Doug suddenly jumped out of bed! The trees in front of our deck were shaking from hundreds of monkeys jumping from tree to tree. Some had babies clinging to their chests or holding onto their backs and Doug followed the troop for about half an hour with his camera. These monkeys give birth in November so their babies were still quite small. What an amazing experience!Read more

      Vecinos infernales

      Desde Guatemala habíamos visto a esta preciosa ave, pero no fue hasta ahora aquí en Ecuador que pudimos fotografiarla y conocer más de sus hábitos.

      Acampados en este terreno que los niños de la zona usan para jugar fútbol, y por donde pasa un pequeño arroyo de agua muy limpia, notamos que una pareja de Teros (Vanellus chilensis, gracias Lainet por la identificación y toda la información) permanece en el campo todo el tiempo. Se ponían algo nerviosos cuando caminábamos por esta área, pero llegaba un momento en el que incluso se mostraban agresivos.

      Esta especie anida en el suelo, de ahí su preocupación cuando aparecimos e invadimos este espacio. Es bien interesante ver cómo trabajan en equipo, a veces para distraer, otras para alejar y cuando no queda otro remedio para atacar a potenciales depredadores, que en este caso parece que interpretaron que éramos nosotros.

      Al principio nos dio cierto temor, porque se lanzan a toda velocidad hacia uno y nos cubríamos la cara, no fuera a ser que nos arañaran con sus patas o las espuelas rojas que tienen en las alas y que se les ve a la distancia. Luego vimos que después de cada vuelo en línea recta siempre cambiaban de dirección justo frente a nosotros, quizás a metro y medio o dos metros de distancia. La cámara sirvió de escudo por si acaso y así fue que se lograron estas imágenes, pero en pocos minutos descubrimos que no había necesidad de preocuparnos, nunca llegaban a tocarnos aunque nos quedáramos quietos y desprotegidos.

      Aunque su vocalización llega a ser algo molesta cuando son tantas y tantas las veces (hasta de noche parece que otros animales se acercaban), uno a cada rato tiene que salir y hacer algo alrededor del BumBumChácata, y ya ni nos dábamos cuenta cuando venían nuevamente al ataque. Es posible que este terreno no sea lo suficientemente grande para ellos y, a pesar de que estamos en una esquina, ni aquí les gusta que estemos.

      Convivimos con ellos como se pudo por tres días, pero la verdad es que otro lugar no teníamos para acampar y fuimos, o fueron ellos, esos vecinos infernales con los que se hace bien difícil la vida de barrio 🤣      Read more

      Balneario Selva Aventura

      Los días anteriores han sido de selva pura, con ríos crecidos y aguas color chocolate. El sol nos ha castigado mucho en la carretera y la verdad es que necesitábamos un lugar como éste. No íbamos a avanzar mucho más después de haber salido de la jungla, así que nos desviamos por un terraplén que conduce a varios balnearios manejados por familias locales.

      Después de un par de intentos fallidos dimos con este lugar, donde nos dieron la bienvenida, y por el precio de $1.00 USD por persona podemos pasar la noche; el lugar nos gustó tanto que al final nos quedamos dos; sobre todo porque a pesar de que es fin de semana, tenemos el río para nosotros solos, un terreno bien extenso, buena WiFi, baños con duchas, paz y tranquilidad ✌️😊👍

      Lo malo es que con la caida de la tarde se desata la "arenilla", así le llaman aquí a esos molestos mosquitos diminutos mundialmente conocidos como sandflies y con los que hay que tener mucho cuidado porque son portadores de enfermedades como la leishmaniasis; en fin, que aunque haya bastante calor hay que cerrar puertas y ventanas, embadurnarse de repelente o cubrirse de pies a cabeza para evitar las picadas 🥴      Read more
