      Isla de la Plata

      November 16, 2018 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

From Ayampe, our refugium on the coast, it was a 20-minutes collectivo (shared taxi) ride to Puerto Lopez, the starting point of two tours we did.
The first one was „Isla de la Plata“ (aka Silver Island) or also known as the Galapagos for the poor. Like us. Haha.
After an 1h boat ride, we arrived.
The island was not as green as expected, but still with a beautiful coastline. We saw lizards, small snakes and most of all: boobies (that’s their real name!).
Those funny birds with incredibly blue feet were everywhere!
After a small hike to see them, we did some snorkeling and it was amazing. So many colorful and big fish, mantas and corals.
The Galapagos for the poor was totally worth a visit!

Puerto Lopez / Isla de la Plata

      July 1, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Grossartig! Gänsehautfeeling!

      Quito -> Puerto Lopez

      September 13, 2014 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Read more

      Puerto Lopez, Ecuador

      December 12, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

In an effort to not fall too far behind I thought I'd catch up on a few of my stops. I took the bus from Santa Marianita with a couple others from the hostel to Puerto Lopez, the blasting of reggae tone serenaded us all the was down the Ruta Del Sol. We had to go inland a bit and change buses to our surprise in a town called Jipijapa (Pronounced: Hippy-Hoppa). The bus just kicked us off and we waited for another. Thats were I tired my first street empanada.

We eventually made it to Puerto Lopez hopped in a tuk-tuk and made it to our hostel.
When we arrived the owner told us that there was a snake in on of the rooms and she wasn't going in there until someone got it out. A man without a machete and a large shirt.... Wait without a shirt and a large machete came and killed the snake we then continued out to the side lot where the snake was burnt ceremoniously to warn other snakes from coming back.

Puerto Lopez is a smaller fishing town that attracts mostly tourists in their winter for the humpback whales and also for people wanting to so to Isla de la plata ( aka the poor mans Galapagos). I originally didn't plan to go but peer pressure presided and the next day we went.

In the early morning both days I was there I got up to see the fisherman bring in their catch the the market. It was quite the show of various fish, shark, and people crowding on the beach. Behind them were little stalls that cooked fresh dishes of fish and rice and plantains all with a cup of coffee for $3 and thats what I had for breakfast.

Isla De La Plata is an hours boat ride from Puerto Lopez and contains many of the bird species found on Galapagos including the infamous Finches, Blue Footed Boobies, Albatross and Fragatas. What the island does have that Galapagos doesn't is the worlds smallest species of Hummingbird. We hiked the island and learned a lot from the guide about the animals the boobies and their mating habits which we got to saw, afterwards we were able to see sea turtles, Rays and go snorkeling off the island in the reefs it was really nice with lots of colorful fish.

I spent the next day just walking around town it was a bit rainy and perfect for just exploring town and spending sometime catching up on my writing and reading.

      Puerto Lopez

      September 16, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Finally arrived at my sisters home: Puerto Lopez is known for the national park with "the most beautiful beach of the mainland of Ecuador" and for whale watching.

Because we both already did whale watching in Australia, we decided to go instead for a horseride in the rainforest, where we spottet monkeys! Getting a massage and having a sulphur bath in the lagoon "Agua Blanca" was definitely worth it! ;)Read more

      Los Frailes

      November 17, 2018 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

The second trip we made during our stay in Ayampe was a visit of the beaches „Los Frailes“.
Just a short bus drive from Puerto Lopez away, there was an 1,5 hour hike to see 3 beautiful beaches. All were breathtaking and we didn’t even have the best weather! Nevertheless, swimming was only allowed at „Los Frailes“, since there is some serious current at the other beaches.Read more

      Whale Watching in Puerto Lopez

      August 11, 2021 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

It is the season now for spotting whales on the coast, therefore I took this trip out on the sea for an affordable 25 USD (can recommend Rosa tours) and was lucky to spot a whole family (2 patents and one baby) 🖤. In New Zealand could see only one animal at that time, so I consider Puerto López a very good spot for whale watching!

For sure pics and videos never can give you the real experience, but I can tell you it was very relaxing and peaceful seeing those giants of the sea gliding together through the water.

We could spot the tail and as well, which is quite rare as the guide told us, the head of them. Furthermore, found these blue legged seagulls nearby.

I skipped the chance to snorkel (which is included in the tour) as I was already freezing on the boat at this time of the year - German pussy 😉.

      Relaxation in Puerto lopez

      August 11, 2021 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Stayed two nights in the small fisher village Puerto López to chill out and recover after Montanita’s party 😉.

In fact Puerto López provides a bunch of nice beach bars, but none of them were populated during the week. They told me though on the weekends and especially during vacation time these will be crowded!

Enjoyed though super delicious sea food right at the beach, ran along the seaside and took a whale watching tour (will write a separate post about that impressive experience). Puerto López is also the entrance to the famous Los Frailes beach, one of the nicest remote beaches in Ecuador.

Extra note: This town has more Tuktuks than cars 😅 - which is something special for the coast, I have never seen a Tuktuk in Cuenca.

Really nice windy roads leading from Montanita to Puerto López, was a lot of fun driving 😎…even though the streets showed more often holes to curve around. Something I have not encountered around Cuenca.

For me this seems like a decent place to relax for a weekend, but too quiet for living around here. Also the infrastructure is lacking here, e.g. illumination in the streets at night or I could not even buy chewing gum in a couple of stores I checked out 😳.

Stay: Tuzco Lodge (25 USD per single) - a well equipped (pool, sauna, etc.) and managed lodge place with very friendly staff. Not directly at the beach side but due to that location very quiet. A clear recommendation!
