    August 30, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

With short breath we climbed up to almost 5'000 meters above sea level. What a good feeling to reach the top and having a chocolate or coca tea with this awesome view!

  • La Playita Quilotoa Laguna

    August 31, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

It was definitely worth it to get up early in the morning to see the sun touching this beautiful lagoon in the crater of a volcano and to climb again up to nearly 4'000 meters above sea level! Worth mentioning is the hotel Samay Quilotoa Lodge with delicious food, nice rooms and friendly staff.Read more

Visiting the Lama Museo "Sumak Lawsay" of a poor but very friendly cummunitiy. After a short walk in accompany of a one year old lama, we had an amazing view of the Chimborazo. This volcano is inactive and with its 6310 meters above sea level the highest mountain of Ecuador.Read more

  • Alausi - Nariz del Diablo

    September 3, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Where you can see the devil's nose!

Trains are not used for public transport in Ecuador, that's why it's very special for the indigenous people when a train arrives. At least it was special for us too, because how the train managed to drive along a very steep mountain called "Devils Nose" is not even known in Switzerland: He drives forward and backwards in a zigzag line to overcome the height.Read more

  • Cuenca

    September 5, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Spending 3 days in Cuenca and having our first try of "cuy" (Meerschweinchen): Cuenca is the third biggest city in Ecuador and the place where a lot of retired Americans and Canadians enjoy the rest of their life. Cuenca is the cleanest city with the most bars and restaurants we've seen so far in Ecuador. If you're looking for a hotel we can recommend the "Casa Montalvo". For dinner, go to Marc's American bar "Tavern del Puente Roto", the Italian restaurant "Santorino" or last but not least the "A Pedir de Boca" with excellent Thai food!Read more

  • San Bartolomé

    September 6, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Small town which is famous for making guitars by handycraft. Such a nice work that I couldn't resist to buy my first guitar from the best guitar maker in the village. And I bought there a Panama Hat too ;)Read more

  • Parque National Cajas

    September 7, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Our last day in the highlands of Ecuador, but worth to climb to an word-for-word "breathtaking" outlook!

But now are we looking forward to warmer weather :)

  • Guayaquil

    September 7, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Guayaquil is the economic capital of Ecuador with nearly 4 million people.

Here we got to know Fernandos family, which heartily welcomed us with open arms, invited us for dinner, gave us private lessons in spanish and offered us to stay at their home for two nights. Thank you very much!Read more

  • Galapagos - Isla Santa Cruz

    September 9, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

1'000 km from the mainland of Ecuador, we finally arrived on the Galapagos Island Baltra. From there we had an one hour transfer to the island Santa Cruz, where we stayed the next 4 nights.

At Tortuga Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches next to the town Porto Ayora, we observed Marine Iguanas - what impressive animals!Read more

  • Galapagos - Isla Seymour Norte

    September 10, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

First Trip: After an 1 hour sail on board of a yacht, we reached Seymour Island. Now we got to know the biodiversity of Galapagos! Blue-footed boobies, land iguanas, sea lions, sea turtle, dolphines and sharks are just a short selection of all the different animals we spotted on the island, from the yacht or while snorkeling. How lucky we are!Read more

  • Galapagos - Isla Plaza

    September 11, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

South Plaza is with 130m width one of the smallest islands to visit. It is known for its unique rock formation, formed from volcanic magma. Again a lot of different birds, such as swallow-tailed gulls, blue-footed boobies and masked boobies welcomed us.

Our highlight of this day trip was definitely the opportunity to snorkel, where we got again to see a sea turtle aswell as five small and one big reef shark!

  • Galapagos - Isla Isabela

    September 14, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

The transfer (2h ride by speedboat) from the island Santa Cruz to Isabela went not everyone well... Here we got to stay for 3 more nights before retourning to the mainland of Ecuador.

Even though we were still on Galapagos, the two islands we stayed were completely different. Right away we felt in love with the little village of Isabela with its charming restaurants, bars and lovely beaches. The visit of a Flamingo Lagoon made the day complete.

On the second day the expedition to Sierra Negro & Chico Volcano was on our programm. Sierra Negro is the second largest volcanic crater in the world, his last eruption was in 2005. After a 8km hike along the crater (and we had to go all the way back!) we reached Volcano Chico where we enjoyed a beautiful view almost over the whole Island.

  • Puerto Lopez

    September 16, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Finally arrived at my sisters home: Puerto Lopez is known for the national park with "the most beautiful beach of the mainland of Ecuador" and for whale watching.

Because we both already did whale watching in Australia, we decided to go instead for a horseride in the rainforest, where we spottet monkeys! Getting a massage and having a sulphur bath in the lagoon "Agua Blanca" was definitely worth it! ;)Read more

We enjoyed this week in Montañita: top school, surf lessons, yoga class, party, beautiful beach, tasty food, best ice cream and nice cabañas. • Guayaquil - Bus Terminal

    September 25, 2016 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Our last stop in Ecuador bevor it's already time to leave...

Unfortunately, our last day was not really enjoyable. Bevor leaving Ecuador, we both got bad diarroeah and had to throw up several times. Thanks god we stayed with Fernando and his lovely family who took care for us. Hopefully this will be the first and last time...

But bevor having an 9 hours busdrive, we would like to summ up our highlights of Ecuador:
    - meeting my sister Patty after more than a year
    - getting to know Fernando: my sisters ecuadorian boyfriend and best tour guide ever, who again and again surprised us with his enormous knowledge and contacts to visit hidden places (and of course getting to know his family!)
    - that the weather can change within seconds from sunny to heavy rain or thick fog ("even google don't know what the weather is going to be")
    - the variety of the ecuadorian landscape such as volcanoes, lagunes, mountains, rainforest, beaches, sea, fields, inca sites, waterfalls, islands and much more...
    - our highely recomended places are definitely Volcano Cotopaxi, Lagune of Quilotoa, Baños, Galapagos Islands and Montañita

But now it's time to leave Ecuador and say hello to Peru! ;-)
