    • Old Cairo - Coptic (Christian) Cairo

      December 13, 2022 in Egypt ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Coptic Cairo is a unique area in Old Cairo that has a concentration of Christian churches and other sites from when Egypt had a Christian majority.

We visited the Hanging Church which is called this because it was built on top of the gatehouse of the old Babylon Fortress. Part of the old tower can be seen by looking into a hole at the side of the church and in the church holes have been cut into the floor and covered with glass exposing the old tower.

We also visited the crypt beneath the Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church that is said to have hosted the Holy Family. They say it was here that the holy family, Virgin Mary, Joseph and young Jesus lived for four months after fleeing to Egypt while escaping persecution from King Herod of Judea.

      Coptic Cairo

      October 16, 2022 in Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

The hanging church is is a Coptic Christian church situated between two bell towers. Coptic Christians split from other Christians in 451 ad over the infallibility of the Pope, and some other things. My mom uses to speak of Papal infallibility, and even as a child, I has some misgivings. I guess that makes me Coptic. Anyhow, the church is nice, with many Muslim influences in its decor. Conveniently located nearby is the Church of St. George, of Greek Orthodox tradition and Church of St. Sergius located where the holy family took refuge for a time while fleeing king Herod. As well there is a Synagogue that we did not visit, it is just down the alley. This collection of different churches and religions along with the narrow stone streets reminded us of Jerusalem.

I shot the early bird but I didn't shoot

      April 16, 2023 in Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

I shoot the early bird morgen früh, versprochen....

UND DAS UPGRADE DES JAHRES...... es gibt Strom auf den Booten!!!!

      ATTENTION! ENGLISH VERSION!

The day started in the middle of the night at 4am... 🤮 Early Bird Kick Start to Aswan.... 4:15am PICK UP Kathrin and Peter, 5am PICK UP of the ladies from Denmark Arense, Ulla and Cecilie.... and off we go 😴💤 on the track through the desert....🐪🐫 While everyone was sleeping in the bus 💤 or trying, the sun rose over the sea to our left.... The drive through the desert was out of sight here magically... sometimes with eyes awake and sometimes with eyes asleep...

Chief hostess Zeb made sure there was something to eat at regular intervals...

After 4 hours we reached Luxor, where the next guests, Nenita and Jimmy, are supposed to board. Since they live on the other side of the Nile, Kathrin took the boat to pick them up, and the rest of us had half an hour to stretch our feet and find coffee☕️and toilet🚽🚻... After a great welcome and "organization" another SUP's in the Luxor Guest House, everything and everyone was stowed away in the bus, and the journey continued... Unfortunately, slower than expected and at some point noticeably getting on my nerves... But again today.... All good that ends well ...

Upon arrival, Ahmed almost brought himself to see Kathrin with joy and then to discover Stefan, with whom he chatted a few days ago, but who hadn't told him anything 😅

Two decent feluccas then became two chaos galleys, thanks to all our luggage.... The crew had prepared a delicious welcome snack that enchanted all palates.... But so that there was no rest, countless boards with the 3 Pumps filled... Fins mounted and paddles put together, because the first round of paddling on the Nile was coming up... On the water, the hardships of the bus ride were forgotten and there were only ecstatic faces.... We went upstream in the direction of Elephantine Island , where Corinna, Ingrid and Max were already waiting for us... but with one board on the list of casualties... it must have suffered from the heat and burst open at the seam....

But need be inventive... first Corinna came towards us on the water and then soon Ingrid and Max, who shared a board....

It was slowly getting dark and we arrived at the boats with the last light, where we had to realize that Corinna's board also has a hole... 2 in one go... that's an exciting start...

On board, the crew took some time to prepare the food and not to be stressed by growling stomachs and hungry ladies, good things take time.... The time was used in several languages for "teaming" and getting to know each other over a glass of tea... .

Then quickly the extremely delicious dinner and then off to bed. Tomorrow at 4:30am the night is over again and we go to the other side and up the mountain at sunrise....

I'll shoot the early bird tomorrow morning, I promise...

AND THE UPGRADE OF THE YEAR......there is electricity on the boats!!!!

      .

      Virgin Mary Coptic Church

      April 11, 2021 in Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

This is a 4th century Coptic Church dedicated to Mary. As you might expect, there are many, many icons here that differ from what we, in the west, might be used to seeing (which are mostly Greek or Russian Orthodox). The first 2 pictures are two of the icons while the 3rd shows several more along one wall of the sanctuary. 4&5 look a bit closer at the sanctuary. The 6th is a trap door in the floor of the sanctuary. It was where Christians would escape when they came under attack.Read more

      Friday - it's the weekend!

      January 15, 2022 in Egypt ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

It's Friday and it's the weekend here so Kamal, Umna's husband, came out with us.
We went to old Cairo and the markets.
Very colorful markets with spices, fabrics, jewelry and more. Men praising their goods, loud music, all very busy. People enjoy their off day with a stroll through the old town and an outing into restaurants.

Clothing-wise there is everything from whole covered women (burka) and man in their traditional galabeya to western clothing in jeans and t-shirts for both men and women.
Also not all women cover their hair.

Besides old Cairo we visited, a Derwish tempel (Sufi religion, a branch of the Islam) and two mosques. I love the outlay, the artwork, the lightening in the mosques. Stunning. The energy is very good, soothing. I find that in places where there have been prayers for many centuries the energy usually is very soothing and peaceful.

I'm very fortunate because Kamal is a famous Egyptian director of photography and documentary films. You will notice the pictures are very good. Credit goes to Kamal!

I bought a amethyst and had it made into a ring. The amethyst was six dollars, the silver and the making 45 dollars. I love the ring.
