All aboard...

The trip began with dad getting up at 05:00 and driving from Cirencester to Ranmore Common to pick up Eva for her holiday of a lifetime. She loaded her gear into the taxi that I had booked and informed me that she was travelling light as I could buy her some clothes in New York...very kind of her to consider this option.
We arrived at the VIP Upper Class check in at London Heathrow at 08:00, with plenty of time to spare, to have a marvellous breakfast and board the 11:30 flight to New York...quite simply the only way to travel!
Virgin are a delight to travel with...excellent food, great choice of movies and great service.En savoir plus

New York

Touchdown in New York JFK at 14:15 bang on time! We soon cleared US customs with the custom chap actually giving us a smile, which is quite unusual.
A fairly long queue and we were whizzing our way into Manhattan to the Standard High Line Hotel in the Greenwich area of the city. Many thanks to my good mate Bruce Robertson for sorting this out for us. Bruce is the man who knows all the best hotels and locations - a real gent even if he is Scottish...cheers Bruce...even a room upgrade with views of the Hudson River.
We then decided to shoot over to Soho House New York which is a members club I have joined in the UK but with worldwide membership. Here, much to Eva's dismay we found out that to partake of any alcoholic drink she had to be 21 years of age!
Oh well the detox will do her good after her week away last week clubbing in Crete with her mates...how the other half live.
A couple of beers and some iced water we moved on to grab a bite to eat and ended up over the road from the hotel at Sugar Factory. We only went in there because people were queuing to get in...apparently the rich and famous and now Eva go there. It is supposed to be the most Instagramed restaurant in the US...whatever that is.
It seems to us that the only reason for it was that you can order these massive cocktails with dry ice in them and Haribo sweets...I can't see it lasting long myself. A couple of non alcoholic cocktails and we headed off to the German Beer Keller which consisted of some very drunk ladies who looked like they had just been dumped and people playing ping pong.
Iced water was forthcoming for Eva who was buy now getting the hang of it.
After so much excitement we called it a night and headed off to our rooms with me looking forward to ur shopping expedition the next day. drink she had to be 21 years of age!

Shop & Rain

Eva was still in bed asleep at 05:30...I don't know the youth of today just can't seem to get out of bed.
After much coaxing I managed to get her to agree to meet me in the foyer at 09:00 and we headed off to...5th Avenue. The weather was like an October day with constant rain and drizzle.
We invested, after some hard negotiation, in two umbrellas for $10...half price...a good start.
This shopping thing is definitely Fiona's domain but I tried my best and after 30 minutes lost the will to live and sat down on a display whilst Eva continued to find the items she absolutely had to have. I received a couple of facetime calls off Fi who found it highly amusing.
I think Eva must have been the only person to buy sunglasses on a rainy day at Sunglass Hut but that is what we did...
Finally by 14:00 she was shopped out and we went for a much earned lunch to Gallaghers steak restaurant. If it's one thing with Eva that can be guaranteed it is that in any restaurant we go to she orders steak. Mind you, it always takes her half an hour to go through the menu, asking what everything is and what do you think...only to come back to steak...so lets narrow down the choice and go to a famous steak restaurant.
There is a loop hole in the US regarding anybody being able have an alcoholic drink under 21 years of age. Apparently if you are under 18 and dining with a responsible adult then that adult can give you a drink. However if you are 18 or over then you can't. Which all seems a bit strange as young people can go to war and kill for their country but not have a beer. Oh well, we couldn't find a responsible adult so Eva drowned in water again.
It was a very good choice and the food and service was superb...so I tipped a whole dollar and we moved on.
By five we were back at the hotels and decided to have bit of a ziz to rendezvous a couple of hours later...oh well, the sleep was very nice and the rendezvous never happened as we slept through until the morning.En savoir plus

South Beach Here We Come

After a good 12 hours kip and Eva's 15 hours we met up at Soho House ready to embark upon the next leg of our journey to Miami.
We checked out of the hotel and thanked Elijah for his wonderful hospitality and informing him that there may be a few packages being delivered to me to collect on our return journey.
I always know if it has been raining in France, where Fiona spends a lot of time, as I end up with lots of packages from eBay. For some reason Fiona seems to have this compulsion to shop, even when the shops are not open, so I have packages following me all over the world. It wouldn't surprise when I return back to my office in Blueberry Wave that it will resemble a Royal Mail sorting office...I pray for sunshine and Eva not to copy.
We are flying from La Guardia and Eva can't understand why we now have to queue for our check in. I explained to her that not all of the holiday is going to be first class travel.
To say the seats are a bit cramped is an understatement. The lady in front of me with dyed red hair who was follicly challenged almost end up in my lap when her seat reclined. I could have given her a head massage. Never mind only a four hour flight.
Time soon passed as I was able to write some of this blog, much to Eva's enjoyment, as she said I looked like a dinosaur with short arms as I attempted to type in a cramped space.
We were an hour late but we're just a short hop to Soho Beach House and arrived at just after 19:00
A quick change and a cheeky Grey Goose vodka from the mi I bar we headed out for something to eat. We asked the front desk to book us a restaurant where the locals dine. However you can't book where they recommended and we were told it was a bit rustic.
None the less our intrepid adventurers headed away from Miami Beach down into Miami. A suppose rustic it was. You climb up a flight of stairs into what looks like a bar and then outside on the terrace are the high tables overlooking a river.
A marvellous fish restaurant called Garcia's Seafood Grille and Fish Restaurant.
We ordered some grilled squid, octopus and prawns and a couple of glasses of Chardonnay. I explained that Eva was only 17 but technically as she was with a responsible adult (the waiter looked around) she could have a glass...he disagreed but gave up. Absolutely delightful food.
The owner, Juan Garcia, introduced himself after we had eaten and insisted on us trying on the house, another glass of wine, the best Mohitos in Miami and another 6 grilled prawns.
Juan was from Peru and when he was a younger man his parents had sent him away from Peru to avoid the civil war with little else than a smile. He ended up in Miami and worked on the fishing boats to then eventually set up his own establishment. What a lovely man. He does look a bit worried in the photo.
After find farewells and a promise to return we then Ubered our way back to Soho Beach House, a cheeky night cap and off to bed.En savoir plus

South Beach Sunshine

Eva managed to get out of bed before lunch.
The way I figured it was that I was paying for the room so there was no point waking her and she may as well get the most use out of it.
We decided to spend a couple of hours on South Beach. The hotel is right on the beach so we just walked along by the swimming pool and out over the boardwalk to the hotels private beach area, complete with waiter service.
As it was by now lunch time Eva ordered a wood fired pizza, as you do, and promptly scoffed on that whilst applying suntan cream.
I had to give up after a while as even in the shade the sun manages to turn me a cooked lobster pink. We ubered ourselves over to Monty's Sunset bar and restaurant in South Beach for our early evening dinner of one of Eva's favourites, Nachos, which was enough to feed a large family.
After such a hard day she obviously felt exhausted so we left early and retired our rooms for the night.En savoir plus

Quack Quack

At 09:00 Eva was still in bed...goodness that girl can sleep. I had been up since 06:00 and also had received a call from Fi at 13:30 as she thought we might still be up and out clubbing as Miami has some great clubs...(certainly not with sleeping beauty). Anyway I went off to the gym and eventually she got out of bed and joined me.
After changing we met in Cecconis, which is the small restaurant at the hotel. It's part of Soho House Group and they are at most of the hotels and also as independent venues. Eva went and got herself a croissant and a boiled egg. When it came to the bill they were charging me $20. Apparently because she got it from the breakfast bar and not from the a la carter then it was $20 and not $4....ahem I think not.
After the manger arrived, due to me refusing point blank to pay the bill, they reduced the bill to $4 for the croissant and $4 for the egg...hello....I could buy a bloody live chicken for that let alone a boiled egg. The manger also informed me that she would not do that again for us...very kind indeed...I informed her that was very good indeed but not to worry as we wouldn't be dining there again.
After a non confrontational start to our day we went for a tourist excursion. The weather was very overcast so we thought that now was the day to do it as I was still resembling a half cooked lobster whilst Eva was beautifully tanned.
We booked with Duck Tours which is one of those amphibious things for $37 each, a very outgoing guide and Captain Cruz the driver and sailor.
Basically the trip consisted of driving around a bit, putting the thing in the water and then driving past the back gardens of multi million pound homes with enormous yachts. I don't know about you but I would be highly pissed off if I had just spent $30m on a house to park my yacht and this quack quack thing comes around the corner with a load of tourists snapping away at your living room. I would probably spend another few million and hire a mini sub and torpedo it.
And yet I suppose it may not matter too much...as Trump is about to go to war with North Korea and who knows where we will all end up. Let's see if we can reach the end of the holiday, but anything could happen in the next 16 days....oh, Cuba is on the list to visit...could be quite apt.
We then drove down Ocean Drive and our gregarious guide started rapping or something and told us to raise our arms just as we passed a poor chap begging on the street with no arms....definitely not pc. After disembarking on shore opposite Burger King we ubered our way back to the hotel and decided to eat out for obvious reasons.
The venue was Mango's Tropical Cafe at 900 Ocean Drive in the heart of South Beach. Now actually, the Mexican food was really nice, a bit pricey but good. We were on the street as the cabaret venue part of the establishment was sold out. So we watched the cars cruising up and down Ocean Drive doing 5 mph and nothing much else. Don't buy a Mustang they are two a penny and we saw a family in one that looked like the Fockers...not street cred.
After Eva had finished doing her impression of red faced Chipmunk after drinking too much Coca Cola (she has progressed from water) we paid the bill and headed off from the delightful ladies in leopard skin pants and tops.En savoir plus

Urban Art

It's all starting to blend into one day...I was up early so I went for a mile swim in the pool, Eva eventually got out of bed and we went onto the beach for an hour. A lazy lunch and a sit down. I booked up the scuba diving for three days for when we hit Mexico and also arranged the pick up from Cancun airport to the Mahekal Beach Resort in Playa Del Carmen.
Late afternoon we went over to Wynwood in Miami which is at the epicenter of Miami’s thriving arts and culture scene with unique art galleries, studios and more than 200 street murals. Quite amazing some of them, the detail was incredible.
http://www.thewynwoodwalls.com/
It is located in what must have been a very run down area but what a way to revive the place. Very urban and very retro.
We had a couple of drinks in some fairly dodgy looking bars
http://www.gramps.com
and decided to dine at Garcia's again. The drive there from this side of town was quite enlightening...very run down and a total contrast between the have and have nots. Within one block it moves from run down to a run of restaurants that cater for the large motor cruise yachts moored on the river.
We climbed the stairs up to Garcia's restaurant and sat outside. Ordered exactly the same food as we did a few nights ago...it was that good...convinced the waiter that Eva was 21 and had no ID and that our mate Juan was cool with it. We downed a couple of marvellous Mohitos, eat superb seafood and departed back to Soho Beach House.En savoir plus

Where's the Wall(y)?

Probably in the White House...Mexico should be safe from North Korea as they don't like Trump either...hope we get past the wall to continue our adventure.
In the morning we just chilled....again! (I don't think my heart can take too much of this inactivity)... and waited to Uber on out to the airport for our 15:00 flight to Cancun.
A short flight with American Airlines to Cancun and then a dedicated pick up to take us to Mahekal Beach Resort.
http://www.mahekalbeachresort.com/
We are here for four nights before we move on to The Hard Rock Hotel. I booked this as it is on the beach and there is a diving school here so Eva can do her PADI Open Water Diver Course. The only thing is that she has to do some studying, which she has never been keen on. So the first thing we were given was the manual and we had to read chapter one (77 pages) for our morning start at 08:30...will she actually be able to get out of bed?
Just along from the hotel we went to 5th Avenue...no, not quite the same 5th Avenue as previously. We went for a stroll to try to find a bank, but I mucked up the directions and it was to no avail. I couldn't even get an ATM to give me some money. So I rang the bank in the UK that gives 24 hour service and explained the situation. They told me that the cards were on stop due to some unusual activity. Had I bought a few items on Amazon etc?
'No' I replied. Hang about, I suspect that Fiona has been online...it must be raining in France...and my office in the U.K. will soon be resembling a Royal Mail sorting office.
So we wandered around getting rather hot and sweaty, with the locals saying hello or Ola every few meters and me replying accordingly. Eva was quite intrigued as to how I could speak Mexican...bless. This wall that Trump is on about building certainly won't have to be that high if the locals are anything to go by. They all seemed very nice and pleasant to me, so perhaps all the bad guys are already in the US in which case the wall will succeed in keeping them there.
Eva was complaining a lot about how hungry she was. So we returned back to the hotel and went for dinner and did our scuba diving homework.
After which she challenged me to a game of pool (the idea is to pocket your coloured balls into the pockets Eva) and then a game of table tennis (the idea is to hit the ball so it goes over the net and lands on your opponents side of the table Eva), all very exciting and embarrassing.
'Dad when we go scuba diving tomorrow will I get sea sick?'
'No darling not in the swimming pool'

Scuba doo

Our big learning to Scuba Dive day so that we can get our PADI Open Water Certificate.
The biggest surprise for Eva was getting out of bed earlier, the next surprise was that it was back to school for most of the day and on top of that it involved a bit of maths!
We spent all morning in class watching videos - PADI ones...no not Paddy, the spelling is correct, videos on scuba diving safety, protocol and how to survive if you think you can become the Man from Atlantis.
A 170 page text book and then a Q&A at the end of the three chapters. All proper stuff.
Eva's face was a picture. All she wanted to do was go and cuddle some sea turtles and dive with dolphins....she will thank me in the end...hard love.
She was very protective of her work.
'Dad stop looking at my answers, do your own!'
Well that's gratitude for you.
After lunch we had a further session and a debrief with another Q&A exam...she passed with flying colours...yeah go Eva go!
Tomorrow we can actually get in the swimming pool to do a dry run, so to speak, and then out to the open water.
Dinner in the evening involved a band...quite good really...click on the video for a taste of the evening.
Oh...and here is one of my favourite movie scenes...

Dive, Dive, Dive

The first part of the PADI Scuba Diver certificate is in the swimming pool. So after a hearty breakfast we set up our Scuba gear, donned the wet suits and in we went. All good trading for our excursion to the bottom of the sea bed later in the morning.
Various exercises included all the safety checks and then underwater filling your mask full of water and then using air to evacuate the water, getting your trim correct with the right amount of air, taking you respirator out and throwing it over your shoulder then recovering it and putting it back in your mouth whilst trying not to inhale water and coming to a premature death.
At least in the pool one can stand up if in trouble, but under 11m of water things are a bit different...that was for later.
We headed off on the dive boat to our dive site about 10 minutes away. We checked our gear and flipped backwards into the sea. Our instructor Roman then descended with us onto the bottom of the sea bed and we repeated our training exercises of throwing away our respirators and then recovering it and reinserting it into our mouths, purging the sea water and happily breathing again.
Off we then popped for a glide around the reef which involved coming al out face to face with a massive moray eel...yikes!...40 minutes later we surfaced for the boat to collect us.
This my third dive and Eva's first. It really is something special and a whole new experience. She loved it.
Tomorrow would be a bigger training challenge.En savoir plus

My Life in Eva's Hands

So yesterday's Scuba trading went very well and now today is the next stage. This time it a bit more tricky. We started in the pool again and the first exercise was that we had to take off our masks for 1 minute and then replace it and purge the water so we could see again. Not too bad. The next exercise was that the instructor turns off your air tank so that it simulates an out of oxygen situation, you then have to signal your 'buddy' aka Eva and she has to give your her emergency respirator.
My daughter can be some what indecisive.
Like, 'Dad shall I have fried or scrambled eggs for breakfast' or 'Eva where would you like to go today?'...'Not sure Dad'
So it was a little bit daunting for me to go through this training let alone think about it 11m under the sea!
However she was brilliant. Immediately I started to signal she got the respirator and handed it to me.
So we both practiced this and off we headed to try it for real, so to speak, out at sea.
This time we went to a different reef and headed to the sea bed below. I signalled 'out of air' and as quick as a flash (she must love me) the respirator was there. On Eva's turn I did the same and we then had swim to he surface together on my tank and respirators. Wow...
We headed back down to the sea bed and Scuba dived along the reef using a quite fast current and saw barracuda, lion fish, and some other fishy things.
All in all a successful end to our diving qualification...and we lived to tell the tale.
The evening was quite different and something Eva had been looking forward to...Cirque de Soleil, Joya. I have been to the Cirque de Soleil in Las Vegas a few years ago and it was remarkable. This one was not to disappoint.
The whole set up is so professional and customer focused...a remarkable experience and well worth the £100 a head.
Joya is a shorter event than the other Cirque de Soleil but still as good.
We were delivered there in 25 minutes by our taxi driver all for the princely sum of £15. He waited there 3 hours and delivered us back to the hotel all for the same price! The average wage in Mexico is around $8 per day. No wonder there are so many people that want to go to the USA. However isn't America cutting off it's nose? The Mexicans surely provide cheaper labour for the USA (albeit not at $8 per day) and do jobs that probably a lot of Americans don't or just simply won't do...so good for the economy?
After the show I suggested we go out to the beach bar along for the hotel. However Eva was a bit over tired....

Peso, Dollar, Peso?

Eva didn't want to Scuba dive today. She stayed in bed as long as she could. We checked out at 11:00 and headed off 20 minutes down the road to our new hotel The Hard Rock.
I had booked the Platinum all inclusive package which was a two bedroom suite with our own personal assistant, an upper terrace with hot tub and sun loungers. There are two parts to the hotel. Heaven which is for over 18's only and Hacienda which is for anybody...we stayed in Hacienda...sorry Eva but you don't yet qualify again.
The service at the hotel was absolutely superb and you couldn't fault it, added to that there was a massive choice of restaurants. We also had a bonus of 1000 Resort points which meant that we could spend $1000 on various exclusions or services at the hotel. Normally this isn't my cup of tea but for three days it was ideal.
So we went and booked up our beauty treatments for the next 3 days. Eva booked for her nails and a facial. I booked for a detoxification facial and a salt scrub massage...a new man.
After Eva's sunbath we went for a walk around the resort. I don't think I could do a week here but for 3 days it would be a bit of a giggle. We sat down by the pool in the shade and watched feeding time at the watering hole. It was just like being on safari. All the hippos would congregate in the water at the side of the pool and start to feed. Pizzas, burgers and as much alcohol as possible was brought to them and they happily munched away whilst sun blazed down on their already peeling skin.
All of this feeding was making us hungry so decided to go for a Brazilian BBQ. It could make your eyes water but fortunately it involved big skewers of meat being carved at your table that you had with different salads. Very nice indeed. In fact I decided to push the boat out and order a bottle of red to go with it.
Everything is inclusive at The Hard Rock but for the better wines you could pay a premium. What the hell we are on holiday so I chose a Mexican red wine. The waiter looked surprised and went and got the bottle. Then his manager turned up and said what an excellent choice it was. Then the wine turned up almost with it's own armed guard.
'I don't think they sell much of this Eva'
'Oh, I don't know anything about wine a just drink anything' said Eva.
Anyway it really did taste very nice and accompanied the meat very well. When the meal had finished the manager brought us the ticket to sign for the wine. It was then that we realised that the price wasn't Pesos, which is strangely enough shown as $580. This would have equated to around £25. It was in fact US dollars! No wonder it came with its own security. So £450 was hastily utilised on the resort credits leaving just €100 to pay...phew.
Wednesday nights at Hacienda there is a rock show by the in house band. AC/DC, Kiss, Queen you name it they played it. Well not quite. The drummer was definitely playing and the singer was definitely singing, but the rest of the band just danced around a bit and strummed out of synchs with the backing music. After a while we snook out and went downstairs to the foyer where there was a excellent 3 piece band playing and some old blokes strutting their stuff. Eva went for a boogie.En savoir plus

Mayan Wonders

The morning started off very peacefully with Eva getting her nails done with acrylic something or other along with extra gel at an extra $25...
'Would madam like to have gel to make them last longer? It is an extra $25.'
'Don't care really I'm not paying'
So whilst Eva was busy spending my money I was having a detoxification facial. This basically involves the facial lady squeezing as hard as she can your nose at various points to clear out the pores. It hurt.
Feeling like somebody had punched me a few times on the nose I thanked her and left.
After a small brunch we were picked up by mini bus and headed off to see the Mayan pyramid at Coba. It one of the few historic sites that the public can climb to the top of. Why you would want to do this in 38 degrees Celsius is beyond me, but none the less it was apparently on Eva's things to do.
The head honcho lived at the top of these pyramids and all the underlings then had to come and deliver his food with his 7 wives living nearby. They would sacrifice a few people now and again by cutting out their hearts whilst alive, then chop off their heads and all was well.
We cycled to the pyramid site and we began to climb. Now if it's one thing I hate it is heights, uneven steps and spiral staircase. No spiral staircases but lots of the other. It was relatively easy going up as one just had to keep looking ahead. We soon reached the top. Now we had to come back down with our shirts already wet with the heat. It would be cooler in a sauna.
We headed back down hanging on to a rope in the centre of the steps to steady us. It took us a while and I was glad that the ordeal was over.
The Mayans used play a ball game that involved two sides of around 3 men each. The picture here shows the stone buildings that were used as the court. The circular ring of stone at the top was the goal and above that is where the important people would watch the game. A royal box I suppose. The only parts of the body that could be used where the elbows, hips and knees. Not exactly bend it like Beckham but quite tricky, especially as it went on for 5 days and nights.
There is a bit of a twist at the end of the game that I don't think xxxx would particularly enjoy despite him being the chosen one. Apparently the loosing manager of the team would be sacrificed to the gods...you know, heart and all that stuff. Then the winning managers reward was to be....erm....sacrificed too. In fact I suppose it is similar to managers in the Premiership as they are generally sacrificed, just not heart and all that stuff.
The excursions was in two parts. The Mayan wonders and then we had a choice to either go to see a Mayan village or go for a swim and a zip line fall over a lake. Unfortunately the winning majority was for the latter.
Eva couldn't wait. I could.
We scaled a 40m rickety old tower with steps made out of old trees. At one point I thought of turning back but how could I let my daughter down?
Onwards and upwards to then have my harness clipped onto the wire and off the edge I went speedily following Eva to the platform across the lake. Terrified is not an exaggeration. To Eva it was a breeze, to me, it was horrendous. I gripped the harness straps with both hands very tightly and prayed for a safe ending.
'That was great Dad wasn't it?'
'Yes darling, great'
When the whole crew had descended we drove off to an underground cavern that had been carved out of the limestone by an underground river. It had a massive pool of water 150 feet deep and it was here where we were going to swim. Sounded great and the pictures looked wonderful. The only draw back was that we had to climb down there using a wet slippery spiral staircase made of old wood.
Why is she doing this to me?
The water was beautifully crystal clear and cool. If it was to stay that way I had to get out quick. A sudden rumbling in my bowels meant a quick ascent back up to terra firma just in the nick of time. Must have been that chilli sauce last night.
Eva couldn't stop laughing when she finally surfaced.
The final part of the excursion was to have a dinner of traditional Mayan food. Ok, they said it was traditional but who knows. Whilst we were dining the locals laid on a show which was involved a fat bloke banging a drum and some others dancing around with feathers in their hear and playing the bend it like Beckham ball game. 3-0 to the side with a player painted as a skeleton. Well done...now what about the sacrifice?
The only sacrifice was me putting $200 (Pesos I hasten to add) in a bowl marked tips that was duly handed around.
We arrived back to The Hard Rock at around 09:00 and the party girl was exhausted so bed time it was.En savoir plus

Zip It!

I was hoping that yesterday's zip line would suffice. Unfortunately not. Eva was determined to get more of it.
I tried to let her sleep but unfortunately she awoke and was rearing to go.
When we arrived at Xplor we were told it was $150 dollars each for zip line, atv, swimming and food. It was only the zip line that were interested in. Alas it didn't make any difference to the price. The price was the price, which meant that I didn't have enough money and had left my credit cards at the hotel.
'Never mind Dad we don't have to do it'
Whilst that was music to my ears I couldn't let her down so we got in a taxi back to the hotel where the taxi driver waited and then drove back to Xplor. This was getting expensive.
What we hadn't realised was that the zip lines involved a lot of water too. We had our clothes and no swim wear. Oh well we have come this far.
There 14 zip lines in total ranging from 10m high to 40m high, that is 14 episodes of terror. Just to cap it all it so involved spiral staircases...oh joy.
The course was split into two parts the lower part and the really high part. Eva decided to do the high part first.
'You can get the hardest part out of the way first Dad'
The zip lines run from tower to tower and then one climbs up the tower that one has zipped to and repeat. 90kgs of flesh and bone hurtling down a 500m line from a height of 40m is quite some momentum. Meanwhile as the wind blows you around and from side to side it just adds to the exhilarating experience, as you can see by my face!
Eva thought is was incredibly funny and at times was doubled up with laughter as I climbed spiral staircases, went across suspended rope bridges and hurtled myself into oblivion.
'Well done Dad you did it! I am really proud of you'
It was worth it just to hear that.
The last two zips involved heading into water so when we left Xplor we were soaked in our clothes. A taxi driver deposited us at a The Hard Rock and I gave him a tip for the fact that his seats were soaked.
Time to relax and Eva to have her facial and me a salt scrub massage. The Mexican lady had incredibly powerful thumbs and I think she would have been great marinating the joint of pork for Sunday lunch. In fact I was almost ready to be put on 220 degrees Celsius with all the oil and salt rubbed into me.
I arranged to meet Eva at the bar in Heaven after our treatments. There we got talking to a recently married couple Lee and Chloe who had come here in there honeymoon. He was much older than her and not somebody you wish to get on the wrong side of. So we didn't and I bought a few drinks. Well I like to think I bought them but as it is all inclusive it doesn't really matter.
We arranged to hook up with them a couple of hours later and go to the night club at Heaven. Much to my amazement they turned up! So off we went to the over 18 night club complete with DJ, decks, swimming pool and all that jazz. Admittedly I was a bit hot but having only been to discos before in the 80's and perhaps a couple of more modern clubby things, I decided to go for a swim and in I went.
'Dad nooooo'
Too late. Eva's iPhone was in my pocket so it was 'hasta la vista iPhone' and a very annoyed Eva. Oh well that will cost me when we get to New York.
Eva decided if you can't beat 'em join 'em.
A thoroughly good but very late night, was had by all.En savoir plus

Cuba

It was late one last night so I ordered breakfast in our suite and started to pack. Eva was still asleep.
Our personal assistant Marios knocked on the door with a gift for us...a bottle of Tequila.
'Erm thanks but no thanks Marios you have it as a present'
We set off to the airport some 90 minutes away. You know when you get that feeling that you have left something behind or forgot to turn the water off? Nope, Eva was here. What can it be?
Then it dawned on me that I had left my trousers and shirts still in the wardrobe back at Hard Rock Hotel. I quickly called them to see if they could get another taxi with my clothes on board to follow. it would be too late so hopefully they are en route to meet me in New York. I shall have to use what I have.
The flight is a short hop to Cuba and we touched down around 16:00. They do not greet you with a smile. In fact they are down right miserable. After clearing immigration and customs which took ages we then queued outside in the humid heat for the currency exchange. This took about half an hour to eventually queue and change my peso's to whatever it is in Cuba.
We then grab a taxi into Havana. We are staying at the Hotel Saratoga. Not five star but sufficient for the next four days and with a roof top pool. We went up there for a cocktail and found on the map a small restaurant called Lamparilla Tapas & Cervezas. When I say on the map I mean google maps. The only thing is that for google maps to work out needs the internet...obviously really. But in Cuba there is no mobile network just hotspots. We would have to resort to old technology called paper to get around and a thing called a paper map.
So not in possession of either digital or analogue technology I memorised where it was located. After 10 minutes of walking we seemed to be in 'Dodgy Havana' rather than 'Old Havana'. Although they are fairly similar what gave it away was a man feeding his cockerel on the doorstep to the almost derelict town house, piles of rubbish everywhere and the strange looks that we got as we wandered along. There was nothing for it but to return to the hotel where we could get wifi. So we asked one of the Bike Taxi chaps with gold teeth to take us back. No sooner had he started to pedal he got pulled over by the very aggressive looking police and had his papers checked and was asked to get off the bike. We decided to walk.
When we got back to the hotel Eva asked, 'Dad are you sure you turned the right way when we set off before?'
I double checked. No I didn't, we ended up going completely the opposite way. So off we strode again with a not to give up attitude. After 15 minutes we arrived, located down the street Lamparilla, which indecently still looked a bit dodgy to me. However the food was very good and we sat there for a couple of hours before heading in the right direction back to the hotel.En savoir plus

Gold Medal

So what should we do in Havana? A nice American girl we met last night gave us a few tips on places to go and see, so we thought the first thing to do was to get a hop on, hop off bus, around Havana. We decided to hop on and not hop off during the tour around the city. I suppose one can sum up the city in a few words...run down buildings, American classic cars, Salsa bands, cocktails and a a fair bit of poverty.
We were on the bus for a good 90 minutes then returned to where we had started. It looked like we might have to tick off some of the few words...so cocktails it was at the world famous Floridita. The establishment is famous for its daiquiris and for having been one of the favourite hangouts of Ernest Hemingway in Havana.
Some history...In 1914, the Catalan immigrant Constantino Ribalaigua Vert started working in the bar as cantinero (bartender). Constantino, nicknamed Constante, became the owner in 1918. Constante is credited for inventing the frozen daiquiri in the early 1930s, a drink that became linked to the fame of the place, whose motto is now "la cuna del daiquiri" (the cradle of the daiquiri). The bar became a school of highly skilled cantineros (bartenders) specialised in cocktails prepared with fresh fruit juices and rum, whose traditions are still preserved by the disciples of Constante.
It was packed but we found a seat and listened to the live music whilst sipping Daiquiri. The food looked a bit iffy so we left and went down Obispo Street which seemed fairly lively. Part of the way down was a kind of pop up restaurant in an old knocked down building enclave. I think it was called Ruin De Parques. Outside was a sign advertising lobster lunch for around £10 and a great band was playing. A few hours later after I dined on lobster and Eva on Chicken with quite a few Mohitos, we knew most of the people that were coming and going...the professional lady photographer from Argentina and her set of girl friends who asked if Eva was my girlfriend, the hippy American lady that had come to Havana for one week and hadn't left four weeks later and who now had a toy boy Cuban boyfriend who was the trombonist from the band, the German couple from Hamburg (he had proposed to her but she hadn't said yes), and of the course the band.
They were brilliant!
I got up and did my Gold medal Dad dance with Maracas or Maraques...not sure which...and they got a reluctant Eva up to join in with what looked like a stale baguette with ridges in the side that you slide a stick up and down. I even bought their CD...I hope it sounds as good as they did during that day.
The weather was very hot and we were perspiring a lot so ice cold Mohitos seemed just the job.
We arrived there at 14:00 and we left at around 22:00. It took us an hour to get back to the hotel and it should have taken 15 minutes! Goodness knows how we got lost.
We decided that a quick night cap was in order after such a long walk and went to the hotel bar. The only people in it were 3 Australian couples...the banter soon began to flow and the event moved into the next day. After Trevor the Australian decided it was a good idea to get his manhood out on the bar, with much encouragement from Eva but less so from his wife, we decided it was time to go to bed.En savoir plus

Eclipse

It was naturally a bit of a late start to the day today and we headed off to the museum of the revolution. It was quite interesting from a history lesson point of view, but quite one sided. It would interesting to learn a bit more about it.
We thought we would get some breakfast despite the fact that it was lunch time so we crossed the road to Sloppy Joe's for our customary Mohitos and a very tasty burger.
The eclipse was to be at 16:00 in Havana so we walked back to the hotel and went on to the roof top pool area and just chilled for a few hours. It was a lovely sunny day but just before 16:00 an almighty thunderstorm arrived complete with lightening and the sun and the eclipse were gone.
We rendezvoused again in the early evening and wandered back into old Havana for...yes you've guessed it...a Mohitos. The rain continued to pour and we had a booked a restaurant a few minutes walk away. So we hailed one of those bike taxis and he pedalled us direct to the door of the restaurant.
The door was locked but they let us in. We thought it was very strange that they would lock the door but perhaps that is for security. Anyway we ordered the food and it was excellent.En savoir plus

Dodgy Havana

Yet another late start. We decided it would be a good plan to hire one of the American Classic Cars for an hour and take a whizz around Havana. We got Senor George and his 1952 automobile that was his grandfathers, then his fathers and now his. So we drove around for a while and stopped off to get a Pina Colada for breakfast from a hut near the old fort.
It was hot again and by the time we had finished my shirt was soaking wet thanks to the plastic seat covers. We were dropped off at the local market and we wandered around looking at the same old stuff that everybody seemed to be selling.
By now we were getting a bit peckish and Eva chose probably the worst restaurant possible. No air conditioning and the food was as if my good wife Fiona had cooked it. We left most of it and walked on to the Cafe de Orientale. Now this was a proper restaurant and up to the standard of some of the best restaurants in London. We bathed in the luxury of the cool air conditioning and had garlic prawns and some pasta. The thing with pasta is it does make you want to go to sleep, so we went back to the hotel and had a siesta.
Come the evening we decided that dinner back at the Cafe de Orintale would be an ideal end to our time in Havana. Well, that was the plan but how wrong we were.
We stopped en route at Floridida and listened to the band playing then headed off to the restaurant. On the way there we saw Hubert the trombonist from the band we saw on Sunday and said hello. We had named him Pineapple because his hair was in dreadlocks and tied up on top of his head. He was from Haiti so my French started too come in handy.
'Eva they must be playing again at the place we went to on a Sunday. Shall we call in there first?'
...and indeed we did.
When we arrived we were greeted with enthusiasm and lots of hands shaking from the waiters and the other members of the band. We must have made quite an impression on Sunday!
So we chilled out here listening to great music, drinking pints of cool Mohitos and when it came time to go to dinner, we didn't. We just ordered lobster and shrimps and continued to enjoy ourselves. The atmosphere was marvellous and when one of the locals left the place he took Eva's hand and kissed it.
When they finished their set for the evening Pineapple and Jacob (Eva's boyfriend) a superb guitar player, joined us along with one of the bands daughters who we named Londres, just because it was easier to remember as she wore a T shirt with London emblazoned across it.
We bought them all drinks and the conversation went across all subjects in various languages of English, Spanish and French. When we were talking about the revolution they were looking around to see if anybody was listening as I don't believe free speech is yet a part of their remit. When Eva was explaining something to Jacob he couldn't understand as his English was limited so she had me ask Hubert (who didn't speak English) in French, who then translated it in Spanish to Jacob, who then responded to Eva in English...but it worked and the conversation flowed.
'Eva stick close by to me as I think it is going start to go to another level and we are going to move on somewhere else'
We left the relatively safe confines of Old Havana and headed into 'Dodgy Havana' where we had been walking on our first night. They took us to a small jazz club in some run down building. We sat down and enjoyed more music and excellent company. The guys then just got their guitar and trombone out and joined the band playing with them for 15 minutes. It was a night not to be forgotten and and 03:00 we left and they walked us back to safer confines near our hotel.En savoir plus

Goodbye Havana

My 08:30 call to Eva was not appreciated.
Despite the fact that the flight was delayed because the airport had to close for a couple of hours...not sure why...I felt it best that we leave at 10:00 to get to the airport. If the reception was anything to go buy then the departure may be worse. However, that wasn't the case. We arrived in the departure lounge very quickly after our hour long taxi journey. It meant that we had 3 hours to wait for the plane to depart.
In Heathrow at the Virgin Upper Class lounge it would have been ideal, but this wasn't Heathrow by any stretch of your imagination. So we waited.
The flight to New York was just over three hours and when touching down there was a loud cheer. Not because we had arrived safely but because people could now receive WiFi internet!
The customary hour queue at immigration even using the new electronic system meant that we were now running low on reserves. Quite frankly Eva was getting very grumpy...no internet as no phone, five hours sleep, long queues and nothing to eat as she couldn't stomach breakfast. Sometimes you just can't win.
As soon as we arrived back at the Standard, High Line we dropped off our bags at reception and headed straight out for some food.
A steak was called for to try to get some conversation out of Eva. We dined at Old Homestead Steakhouse.
It says on their web site....'Combining tradition and elegance, The Old Homestead Steakhouse has been serving the finest cuts of beef in New York City for over a century.'....and it looks as if it is the original carpet.
http://www.theoldhomesteadsteakhouse.com
The steak was wonderful but the portions are so big that we went with sharing one.
So with a 9 ounce steak lying heavy in our stomachs we went off to bed after a very long day.
On arrival at my room I guessed that it had been raining in France.En savoir plus

Eva where are you?

Last night the last thing Eva said to me was not to wake her up early.
So I didn't. I had woken up at 03:00 and did a few phone calls to the UK and of course the usual emails. So I was kicking my heels early on after dozing off again and went for breakfast early. A few more calls over breakfast and the Apple Store was open two blocks away.
As fate would have it we had been to the Apple Store on our earlier arrival to change the iPad. When I was there I looked at the new iPhone 7 plus as I just simply need a bigger screen the way my eyesight is heading. So I needed to buy Eva an iPhone following my swim in Heaven night club so she may as well have my 4 week old iPhone 6 and I get the bigger one. That is two iPhones now that I have fallen in water with during the past 6 months. I wish they would make a waterproof one.
It took a while to sort it out but as usual the service at Apple was top notch.
Oh well I may as well walk another block to Soho House and collect my new membership card that had arrived. The waiter had given my card to somebody else our last gist over two weeks ago. so I sat on the roof terrace by the pool with all the lovelies doing some work. Still no news from Eva, no texts or messenger messages....perhaps there was something wrong. So I sent a few messages to her over the next hour. Still no response. Perhaps there was something wrong? She was grumpy and tired last night I hope she is ok?
I returned the hotel and range her room.
'Dad where the f&?@ have you been?'
'I have been messengering (if that is a word) you for ages?'
'Dad you idiot I don't have a phone...remember.'
'Ah yes...that is why I went to Apple to get you one'
I laughed, she didn't. She had been up since 09:30 and knocked on my door three times getting rather concerned that I might have croaked it during the night. So she had been hanging around for 5 hours.
Oh well at least she now had a new iPhone which I promptly set up and she was back in the civilised world.
I rang the helicopter tour company and we could get on the next flight which was in 30 minutes time from near the Statten Island ferry terminal. We made it just in time and did the 15 minute flight to the Statue of Liberty, up the Hudson and back again to the heliport for the bargain basement price of $450...blimey! Still, it was worth doing it for Eva's New York visit.
Unfortunately on the way to the 9/11 memorial pools we walked past a a few shops that just had to go in. Do these clothes shops put something in the ac units to make men go to sleep and loose the will to live? So that cost me too and of course her sister just had to have something even though she wasn't on the holiday.
As Eva hadn't eaten all day we headed back to the hotel to get refreshed for going out.
My clothes had arrived from Mexico so I now had my long trousers my T-shirts and a small plastic bag containing some women's knickers. All I can say is that I have no idea where they came from. That is my story and I am sticking to it.
We left the hotel to the beer Keller next door for Eva to have a glass of water and then it was off to Fat Chick a couple of blocks away for Southern Fried Chicken.
I said goodbye to Eva in the hotel elevator. She was in the 8th and I was on the 12th. I was a bit waylaid and went to check out the 18th floor where the club was located with views over to New Jersey and Manhattan. It was very nice but I decided to as always act my age and retired to bed.En savoir plus

Another afternoon shopping

Just when I thought it was safe I got dragged shopping again.
We bought the last few things that Eva simply had to have. A couple of pairs of shoes, some jeans and a couple of other must have items.
We then went back to The Standard Hotel and Eva went for a bit of a lay down after such a hectic expedition. I went and packed hoping that all of Fiona's clothes that she had bought and sent to the hotel would fit in my suitcase.
Eva was still resting so I popped down the German Keller and cashed in my last free beer tokens on a couple of beers whilst talking to a guy called Tommy from Brooklyn about the area and how it had changed from being fairly run down to what is now one the trendiest parts of Manhattan, especially with google opening up their office there a couple of blocks away.
When Eva surfaced we went for something to eat at Omai which is an excellent, small Vietnamese restaurant a couple of blocks away...and very reasonable at $50 for the two of us.
Bedtime was relatively early on our last night before our Virgin Atlantic flights back to good old Blighty...I think we were partied out!En savoir plus
