    Morgens ging’s los Richtung Cape Raoul. Endlich! Das stand so so lange auf meiner Liste was ich in Tassie sehen wollte. Die Wanderung war mit 5h angesetzt. Die haben wir auch gebraucht. Es hat sich wegtechnisch echt gezogen zwischendurch, aber es war wunderschön als wir endlich ankamen. Da dann gefühlt für ne Stunde gechillt und dann zum lime bay Campingplatz gefahren. Aufm weg noch beim bottleshop gehalten, weil wir auf den letzten Abend anstoßen wollten. Am Campingplatz angekommen traumhaft schönen Spot rausgesucht. Haben noch nen deutschen dort kennengelernt. Deutsche sind wirklich überall. Den Abend gemeinsam verbracht und geredet. Anschließend ging’s ins Bett. Czytaj więcej

    Tasman Halbinsel

    Es ist auf unserer Reise schon öfter vorgekommen, dass Pit und ich gesagt haben: Jetzt haben wir so viele tolle und aufregende Dinge gesehen, jetzt kann gar nichts neues mehr kommen! Und Zack - im nächsten Moment werden wir wieder überrascht von Gottes unendlicher Schöpfung! Und das ist heute genau so. Den letzten Tag in Tasmanien wollen wir nämlich auf der Tasman-Halbinsel verbringen. Als wir morgens in Dunnalley starten, liegt der erste Stopp nicht weit entfernt auf einer Brücke. Von dort sehen wir drei Seelöwen, die sich die Morgensonne auf den Bauch scheinen lassen. Selten habe ich Tiere gesehen, die beim Faulenzen so menschlich wirken. Vielleicht ist einer der Seelöwen sogar Instagram-Sternchen Neil the seal?

    Nächster Halt: Pirates Bay. Wenn ich Geologe wäre, würde ich ausrasten vor Glück über diese Felsformation an der Küste! Irgendein Phänomen (ich bin eben leider kein Geologe...) hat dafür gesorgt, dass die Felsen hier natürlicherweise wie riesige Pflastersteine auseinanderbrechen! Wir nehmen uns Zeit für einen Strandspaziergang, staunen über See-Anemonen und Muscheln und dann finden wir etwas, von dem ich nichtmal wusste, dass es existiert. Google Lens sei Dank ist dieses "Etwas" schnell identifiziert: es sind Käferschnecken, die nur an Australiens Küsten vorkommen und mit ca. 500 Millionen Jahren eine der ältesten Tierarten der Erde darstellen. Verrückt, was es alles so gibt. Weitere Punkte, die wir auf der Tasman-Halbinsel bestaunen, sind: Devils kitchen, Tasmans Arch, Waterfall Bay Lookout, Port Arthur Lavender.
    Unser letzter Sonnenuntergang in Tasmanien ist nochmal Wahnsinn und der krönende Abschluss: Cape Raoul. Eine schöne, nicht allzu anstrengende Wanderung durch australischen Wald und drei Stunden später kommen wir wieder in den Genuss einer uns bisher unbekannten Landschaft - schaut am besten auf die Fotos und ins Video... Steile, säulenartige Felsen fügen sich an der Küste aneinander, es ist einmal mehr unbeschreiblich. Oder doch, in einem Wort: Wow. Nochmal: das ist der Traum eines jeden Geologen und ich denke ganz fest an meinen Opa (Dr. der Geologie), den sicherlich mehrere Punkte unserer bisherigen Reise begeistert hätten. Tasmanien zeigt uns einen unvergesslichen Sonnenuntergang. Die eigentliche Herausforderung kommt aber, wie so oft, erst danach: wir müssen den Weg im Dunkeln wieder zurück. Der Wind hat zugenommen und die Bäume knacken und knirschen gefährlich. Als ein Baum auf dem Weg liegt, der auf dem Hinweg noch nicht da lag, verstehen wir die aufgestellten Warnschilder vor herunterfallenden Ästen. Außerdem werfen unsere Stirnlampen gruselige Schatten im Wald. Die vielen Geräusche kommen hoffentlich von nachtaktiven Wallabys und nicht von Schlangen. Dass ich auf dem Wanderweg außerdem einen kleinen Skorpion sehe (ja, auch die sind hier giftig... allerdings nur "unangenehm schmerzhaft" und nicht tödlich), ermutigt uns nicht gerade und wir laufen sicherheitshalber doppeltes Tempo. Natürlich kommen wir gesund und munter am Parkplatz an. Hier erwartet uns ein sagenhafter Nachthimmel. Der Kitsch ist komplett, als eine riesige Sternschnuppe auf uns zu gesegelt kommt.
    Danke Tasmanien für 10 unvergessliche Tage, wir kommen gewiss wieder!

    Last morning….

    The camp site at Port Arthur was lovely, we saw potoroos* at dusk, there were lovely colourful tweeties around, but with the packing malarkey we didn’t have time to fully enjoy it all.

    Anyway, the packing battle (part 1) has sort of been won. Part 2 will commence tomorrow, as we have our flight to Auckland on Sunday, so all bits and bobs currently in extra bags have to be accommodated in proper luggage, somehow!

    Not sure how that’s going to go - I look forward to the challenge (not) 😳

    Edit: Saying ‘bye to Sheila was sad, she’s been a great, if not very rattly companion! We drove 2000.6km - the .6 was prob the trip to fill up the diesel before dropping her off!

    OTR: Hiking in Tasman NP

    After our delicious breakfast at Port Arthur Lavender, we hopped in the car to continue our drive north.

    But before we left the area permanently, we detoured to see a few sites in Eaglehawk Neck. More specifically, in Tasman National Park. And that led to an unplanned hike … a good idea considering the feast of a breakfast we had!

    Our first stop was the Blowhole. It was a bit of a bust today. You see, to get the full effect, the seas need to be “fierce.” Conditions were rather calm today. So, onward we continued.

    A short drive brought us to the very impressive Tasmans Arch, formed when the roof of a cave collapsed and created a bridged-chasm. Like Remarkable Cave, it was the erosive power of the ocean that formed the arch … with help from compressed air, sand, and stone … all of which acted on vertical cracks in the cliff, slowly dislodging bits and pieces to create what our eyes beheld today.

    It was here that we added a hike to our plans. We were going to do the Coastal Cliff Circuit anyway — a .4 mile easy trail to see Devil’s Kitchen (also a bust because of the calm sea state). We just decided to keep going to see Waterfall Bay … a moderate, 2.5-mile in-out trail … considered to be one of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks. Unfortunately, the waterfall is seasonal, so we didn’t get to see the water flowing.

    Remember how I mentioned that Tasmania is not unlike New Zealand’s South Island? Case in point. The cliff top trail went through coastal heathland and forests … with occasional glimpses of the coastal scenery from overlooks along the way. It was good exercise, though. And where we did see views, they were expansive and scenic. And let’s not forget the wallabies we encountered on the trail … a bit camera-shy, but it was nice to see them in the wild.

    All in all, no complaints about our afternoon in the National Park.     Czytaj więcej

    Port Arthur, TAS: Fox & Hounds

    We have a lovely view of Stingaree Bay from our room at the historic Fox & Hounds. We are enjoying sitting in front of the window and watching the peaceful scenery as we read (Mui) and write (me)

    Our room is clean … the bedding pristine … the bed comfortable. But The Tudor-style hotel needs a really good refresh. If what I read about the recent renovations is accurate, it either just applies to the bedding, or we didn’t get one of those rooms.

    Our accommodations will do for the two nights we’ll be here, but, I’d be hard pressed to recommend the place to others.

    The food at the onsite pub, however, is delicious … recommend the Guinness Pie.

    The full moon is bright, reflecting off the rippled surface of the bay. But it sounds like there’s a gale blowing outside. At least it’s not as bad as the cyclone that crossed onto the Queensland coast last night — the second one since we arrived in Australia mid-December … nowhere near as devastating this time thank goodness. Fingers crossed the winds die down or else part of our Port Arthur experience will be a no go tomorrow.     Czytaj więcej

    OTR: Taranna … Tas Devil Unzoo

    After a crispy fish & chips lunch, we programmed the GPS to take us to a zoo.

    Excuse me! Zoo is wrong. We went to an Unzoo … specifically the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo in Taranna.

    The concept of an Unzoo is simple. There are no fences or boundaries, so the animals get to come and go freely … except for the devils, of course. All of the other come-as-you-please residents know a good thing … freedom on the one hand … food at specific times of the day should they wish to partake. Most of them seem to do … though there were some no shows today.

    The Unzoo is basically an enclave of bushland. For the past 40 years, they have been involved in the conservation of the iconic Tasmanian devils. This has become all the more important because of a highly contagious form of cancer that has taken hold in devil populations in other parts of Tasmania. The population in this part of the island remains cancer-free. There are elaborate tracking methods established to catch any devils that might cross into the area to ensure they are healthy and not carriers of the disease, The hope is that should to worst happen and the cancer decimates the devil population, those at the Unzoo can be released into the wild to help repopulate the species.

    We arrived just in time to catch the second half of the Tasmanian Devil presentation … staying with the keeper afterwards to follow her around as she went to feed the eels (uncooperative until we turned to leave); the sea eagle pair that is nesting on the waterfront (also uncooperative, but they did put on a good aerial show); the kangaroos and the Cape Barren geese (cooperative and interactive). And more. At each stop she gave us extensive information about the species being fed, thus fulfilling the promise of educating visitors.

    We remained with the keeper to go to the 3:00p Tasmanian Devil feeding to catch the first part of her presentation. So many interesting details about these critters … not enough space or time to share it all. And then did a bit of a DIY wander to spend some quality time with the critters.

    We almost skipped the Unzoo … so glad we didn’t. Happy to know that our admission will go towards the conservation of the species.

    Leaving the Unzoo, we headed to our hotel in Port Arthur — the The Fox & Hounds. Along the way, we stopped at the Lavender Farm. They were about the close, so we didn’t get to wander around. But no worries. We plan to have breakfast there tomorrow or the next day.     Czytaj więcej

    Hobart und Port Arthur

    Samstag:
    Wir stehen früh auf, weil heute in Hobart der bekannte Salamanca Markt ist, der nur einmal in der Woche stattfindet. Der Name ist abgeleitet vom Salamanca Place, der so benannt ist, um an die Schlacht von Salamanca zu erinnern. Und erschließt sich nicht warum es in Tasmanien ein Andenken an diese Schlacht von 1822 gibt. Im Hafen liegt das Kreuzfahrtschiff Queen Elizabeth. Entsprechend gut besucht ist der Markt. Es ist ein Markt, auf dem hauptsächlich tasmanische Produkte aus Handwerk und Landwirtschaft angeboten werden. Wir nutzen die Gelegenheit, um einige Köstlichkeiten zu probieren (z. B. Jakobsmuscheln am Spieß). Wir genießen ein frühes Abendessen und fahren mit dem Bus zurück auf unseren Schotterplatz. Bei den Busfahrten sehen wir, wie Hobart weitläufig in die Berge gebaut ist, mit seinen ziemlich steilen Straßen links und rechts erinnert es uns ein wenig an San Francisco.

    Sonntag:
    Den ursprünglich geplanten zweiten Tag für Hobart lassen wir sausen. Zum einen gäbe es für uns nur noch Museen anzuschauen, was uns weniger interessiert, zum anderen fällt es uns nicht schwer den hässlichen Campingplatz zu verlassen. So brechen wir zu unserer Tasmanien Rundreise auf und fahren als erstes auf die, im Süd-Osten gelegene, Halbinsel, nach Port Arthur.
    Wir durchqueren wunderschöne Landschaften, kommen an einmaligen Look-outs vorbei, einzig die Sonne und der blaue Himmel, lassen uns im Stich. In Port Arthur machen wir eine Bootsrundfahrt durch den offenen Naturhafen und besichtigen anschließend die Gefängnisanlage aus dem vorletzten Jahrhundert, in die die wirklich schweren Jungs deportiert wurden.
    Da wir nicht mehr weit fahren wollen, nehmen wir den nächsten Busch Campingplatz für sage und schreibe 40 Dollar mit einer urigen Zelt-Campkitchen und Busch Toilette.     Czytaj więcej

    Port Arthur

    Ein weiterer traumhafter Tag nahe Port Arthur. Zwei Stunden entspannt entlang der Küste spaziert und die letzte Halbe nochmal Vollgas Richtung Gipfel ⛰️
    Auf dem Heimweg sind wir wieder spontan an jedem Strand angehalten, der uns in die Quere kam.
    Im Hostel hieß es dann packen denn es geht für Weihnachten ins Airbnb😊
    Wir freuen uns schon auf selbst gemachten Glühwein und Vanillekipferl…. und die Ruhe natürlich 😌     Czytaj więcej

    Ship Stern Bluff

    Got up outside Auntie Jan's house about 8.45. I was still feeling a bit ill and Hannah was starting to come down with it. We had a chilled morning planning our 2 week Tassie trip. Caught sight of a pod of dolphins making their way up to Hobart for the morning commute.
    Had a chat with cousin Lara whilst Jan was out. Then had a lovely group lunch before setting off towards Port Arthur area.
    I checked the swell and it was looking around 16ft with light winds, so decided to take a detour to Ship Stern Bluff. One of the worlds most wild waves. After an hour and a half walk we found it.
    Massive powerful wave. We just missed a group of surfers who were just leaving on a jet ski.
    Amazing coastline with no one else around.
    With dusk approaching we walked back through the trees to our van.
    Moved it into the close by camping spot for 20 dollars for 2 of us. The owner came out and shined a bright light in our faces when we got in, complaining that we did not dip our lights when entering his field 🙄. Very friendly.     Czytaj więcej

    Hobart to Port Arthur

    We walked a couple of blocks from our hotel to take in the Saturday morning market. There were plenty of food trucks, local liquor stalls, wooden & glass handicrafts, & clothing stalls, lined up. It was very busy with cruise ship passengers. We rented a car to drive to Port Arthur on the Tasmanian Peninsula. We’re in an AirBnB for a couple of nights to explore this area. Our Toyota Camry hybrid is a little annoying, because not only is the steering wheel on the wrong side, but the wiper blade controls & signals are reversed. Switching lanes & turning were met with a few honking horns & stares! We arrived at our place without incident, where we were greeted by our friendly host Cathy, looking forward to cooking our dinner on the barby! Before dinner we drove 4 minutes to one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve seen on our trip, so far, & walked it from one end to the other. Even on a Saturday, the beach was nearly deserted.
