    Kingston day 2

    July 25, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Busy work day for me but Moki and I got a good walk this evening. Last night was swinging music in the market square and tonight is movie night… and there were lots of people set up to watch ‘The Italian Job’. Love that there so much outside activity. Gets dark too late for me to watch a movie though. Tomorrow we are headed towards the Trent.Read more

    Thousand Island

    July 25, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Read more

    Kingston

    July 24, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

We are in Kingston at the Confederation Basin Marina for a couple days. Today we resupplied and James defrosted the refrigerator. Domestic stuff!! This evening Moki and I went for our walk and stumbled upon Jazz music. 🎶 Turns out it was a mix of music with some high energy dancing. Lots of fun watching. James joined us and then we went for ice cream. It was windy today and will be tomorrow also. Our miles have really come down the last few weeks… 12 miles today. Including idle days our average is 25/day.Read more

  • Day 130

    Beau Rivage

    July 18, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Today we made a quick stop in Kingston and then set out to explore the Thousand Islands. The water here is amazingly clear. There are 18 park islands that allow docking or anchoring. We settled on Beau Rivage, one in a cluster of Park islands. This one allows generator use between 8am and 10pm which will be needed tomorrow to run the Starlink so I can work. There are several docks located around the island and a trail that runs thru and around the island. Moki, Luna and I kayaked around the island after work. Luna wanted to go but then didn’t and meowed most of the way. The water temp is 73 and the high air temp today was 74. A little chilly but I still jumped in. This evening we went on a family hike. Luna was so tired at the end she let James carry her a bit. She’s now on the Princess helm for the night. We plan to stay here two nights.Read more

  • Day 129

    Kingston Mills

    July 17, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

7 locks and we are sitting at the bottom of the last lock of the Rideau Canal. Kingston Mills was a flight of four locks 55’ total. We’re now in the valley and on the edge of Kingston proper. This dock does not have power but it’s going down to 58 tonight! There’s some beautiful rock ledges around us and outside of fishers (a lot) we are the only ones on the dock… in a boat anyways. Moki and I of course did some exploring around the grounds. We learned the name Kingston Mills refers to ‘The King’s Mills’ a saw mill and a grist mill built in 1784 to supply boards and flour for the loyalist settlers arriving the following year. At the time Kingston was called Cataraqui. Tomorrow we will pass thru Kingston on our way to the Thousand Islands. We are really enjoying our time in Canada. The Parks Canada Pass has more than paid for itself and I can’t say enough great things about the Parks Canada staff. They are all awesome!! Great experience !!Read more

  • Day 128

    Upper Brewers

    July 16, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

Today we went thru Davis lock (where we spent the night) and then the flight of four locks at Jones Falls. We reached the Summit of the Rideau yesterday so now we’re going down in all the locks. The four Jones locks have a total decent of 70 feet which is quite impressive. After passing thru we tied up long enough for Moki and I to walk up to the Stone Arch Dam. This Dam was constructed between 1831-32 during the Rideau Canal construction to flood a series of rapids and falls. It uses interlocking vertical stones that press against each other and the rock ledge to stay in place. Workers are said to have called it the “Seventh Wonder of the World”. Stone Arch Dam is also known as the Whispering Dam because the arch shape allows sound to travel along its face so that someone speaking at one end and be heard on the other side. We are now one lock south for the night and arrived just as it was getting ready to rain. There was a weather advisory that called for toonie sized hail but most of the heavy rain went to the south of us. This lock has power AND showers. Site is nice too. Lots of grass for Moki and paths for walking. Water very clear with Secchi on bottom in 2.3M.Read more

    Thousand Islands Bridge / Kingston

    October 18, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Auf halben Weg nach Toronto liegen die Tausend Inseln:
    Wikipedia:

  • Day 30

    Sydenham Mornings

    May 31, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Ontario .... 8 times larger than England, or larger than France and Spain combined if you prefer a European perspective...either way...pretty big. However big it was, today's destination - Sydenham - was lacking in campsites and WS hosts, and so another hobonight was on the cards.

It had been an easy 60mile ride from Marc's, although the trail was rather scraggy in places., and I got to the local "Foodland" to stock up. Made the mistake of quietly whispering to the checkout girl if she could direct me to the local fire station or park so that I could stealth camp, and she immediately shouted over to the other checkout peeps for their input...in front of the queues of people. I tried to look small, innocent and less trampy than normal as the directions came in and the Sydenhamites eyed me up and down suspiciously.

I had no need of the fire station in the end as I'd quickly found the perfect spot behind the library with relaxed outside chairs on a small patio to which the library's free WiFi even reached - bonus! All I had to do was wait till dusk, pitch and sleep. Well, that was the plan, until at the stroke of 8pm the library's automatic outdoor floodlights kicked in, making me instantly very visible to anyone driving by or taking an evening stroll. Bugger. I circled round the village, but it was now dark and difficult to find a good spot. By the time I found somewhere next to a running track it was pitch black. I couldn't tell which way up, or which way round, the fly sheet was. I discovered that the makeshift tent pole fix didn't live up to its name, meaning the tent looked drunk and slumped to one side. As my frustration and paranoia about being spotted grew I kept dodging behind the tent when a car passed and their lights swept over me. I tried a volley of exasperated expletives under my breath...but that didn't help.

    This.
    Wasn't.
    Fun.

    ...

I think I got about 4 hours sleep in the end... In my half asleep head I'd decided I was on a school running track and if anybody reported a grumpy tramp swearing to himself on school grounds, I was likely to be pitchforked by an angry PTA mob.
Que 5am wake up, quick decamp and morning bath in Sydenham lake.

The swim helped relieve my foul mood. I'd found a public toilet block nearby, annoyingly locked for another 2 hours, but amazingly with a live outdoor plug. Whilst kit was charging I set about repairing my tent pole for the second time, (this time using the correct parts I'd bought exiting Ottawa) and munched on two left over squashed blueberry muffins. Until I heard a large truck roaring towards me at speed..... What in hobohell now?

A young couple jumped out and headed rapidly for me....they didn't look the PTA type.

False alarm. They were just the toilet block unlockers and cleaners. Fhew. We said Good Mornings and they set about mopping inside while I finished repairs outside.

After a while the sound of rhythmic and accelerating creaking coming from the cleaning cupboard told me they'd found something more fun to occupy themselves and I took that as my que to leave.

Note to self: nobody rushes to clean toilets.

  • Day 18

    Brockville-Kingston

    May 20, 2023 in Canada ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

  • Day 5

    Dal Quebec a Kingston

    April 29 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

The Tragically Hip, you know?)...na ciofeca.
