      Push to Roncessvalles

      April 30, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

      Arguably one of the hardest things I’ve done. We climbed 3 peaks today up to 4700 ft then traversed a decline of about 1600 ft, some parts rocky and slippery and very steep. Todays walk took 5 hours. So proud we made it over the Pyrenees with no injuries!Read more

      Now in Spain! First day completed

      April 12, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

      What a luxury! It is 2pm and we have finished our walk (only 12 kms) and are settled in our very charming accommodation in Valcarlos (Luzaide in Basque), had our lunch, and a coffee/hot chocolate (which is now my favourite ColaCao!) and we can relax for the afternoon writing the blog, sharing photos, reading till dinner…perfect, as it has now started to rain lightly and is rather miserable outside.

      But we had an absolutely beautiful walk. I hardly remember it from 10 years ago, but it was picture postcard countryside, some reasonably long ups and downs but just fine, and a perfect temperature for walking - I think it was about 10° when we left, and mostly cloudy even with small patches of blue…the rain didn’t start till after our arrival here in Valcarlos.

      We weren’t at all sure that we would be able to check in so early (about 12) but the friendly lady was happy, but we had terrible problems communicating as she had no English, and our Spanish was not up to understanding hers! Then we discovered we could all communicate in French and all was well (she speaks Spanish, French and Basque) . We have dinner at the one eatery of the village (adjoining the supermarket!) where they have a dinner, including wine and bread, for €17. It is obviously THE meeting place for the town, as when we had a coffee there, it was packed with people sitting down having lunch (on a Wednesday)…quite chaotic! And we have vouchers for breakfast there…so all sorted. At the moment we are sitting in a very comfy sitting room adjoining our room and another room. This is a separate annex to the main building and beautifully fitted out…so far no one else here. Our bags were waiting for us, so the system works.

      Tomorrow we have another 12 kms to Roncesvalles, but quite a long altitude gain, and it will be raining and could be a little snowy higher up, but not impossible, and from there is it downhill on the other side to Zubiri and Pamplona!

      Etappe 1 - Roncevaux, Teil 2

      September 14, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Suchen uns unterwegs etwas.

      Joyce Kilmer

      August 25, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

      I think that I shall never see
      A poem lovely as a tree.

      A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
      Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

      A tree that looks at God all day,
      And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

      A tree that may in Summer wear
      A nest of robins in her hair;

      Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
      Who intimately lives with rain.

      Poems are made by fools like me,
      But only God can make a tree.

      Despacio

      September 22, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

      Today we walked into Zubiri, a little Basque town on the Agra River. The walk was easy today compared to walking over the Pyrenees! Some gentle ups and downs but the big feature was the final 3 km into Zubiri. It was a steady downhill on a trail the was on some of the weirder rock formations I’ll ever walk on. You just have to see the pictures! The geology nerd in me was excited! But the hiker in me was less enthused. We walked through our first forest with pines today, too. Up until now all the forests have been some type of deciduous tree that is beautiful and leaves a thick Rudy brown colored blanket of fallen leaves all over the forest floor.

      We’re trying to figure out Spanish food. Our breakfasts have been hearty and tasty, and we kind of nibble on the trail and occasionally stop for coffee, a muffin, a piece of tortilla (like a potato fritata), or a soda. Basically not a lot of fuel on the walk. But then a night when we try o get some food it’s kind of hit or miss. They eat dinner late (like 9:00) here, and finding a somewhere that serves an actual dinner is not an easy feat. Here in Zubiri there’s a bar that closes early, a bakery that serves tortillas and beer, and one restaurant with a pilgrims menu. So we went there and the food was good, but eating at 9 is a little different. Anyway, I’ll keep you posted if we learn more about eating. It’s important to keep David fueled up since he burns trough a lot of calories a evidenced b his slender build.

      David is doing great now that he’s adjusted to our daily routine!

      Tomorrow we will walk to Pamplona. It’ll be chilly in the morning but will get up to the mid-70’s by midday.

      Borda til Roncesvalles

      April 13, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 2 °C

      Det var meldt dårlig vær over Pyreneene, snø, regn og sterk vind. På Borda fikk vi tilbud om taxi fra Borda tilbake til SJPP og til en alternativ rute (Valcarlos Route) som ikke er så værutsatt.
      De lette løsningene er jeg ganske flink til, så jeg nyttet høvet til å øve meg på den mer strevsomme løsningen, sammen med fire andre.

      Fra Borda til Roncesvalles er det ca. 17 km. - 13 km oppover, fra ca. 800 til 1400 meter og 4 km nedover - fra ca. 1400 meter til 900 meter. En strevsom tur med snø og kuling til liten storm i kastene. Spesielt turen nedover ble strevsomt for knærne. Stien var full av vått løv og snø, så stavene kom godt med for å unngå knall og fall samt avlasting knærne.
      Vi fem ble etter hvert til tre. De to andre hadde mer futt i bena og gikk fra oss. Jeg fikk hyggelig følge med den koreanske ektemannen (kona og datteren tok taxi) og den Canadiske journalisten. Veldig hyggelig og svært omsorgsfulle. Vi heiet på hverandre og de ventet når den gamle (meg) trengte en pause og det ble det en del av. Vi kom nå fram til Roncesvalles etter 5,5 timer. Der fikk jeg dusjet og vasket tøy - jeg var våt innenfra og ut og utenfra og inn. Nå venter jeg på middag, pilegrimsmesse og en tidlig kveld.
      Gode relasjoner og bånd til andre er en god ting, som jeg lærte en ting eller fler av i dag.

      החיוך לא מש משפתיי

      April 11, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

      במשך כמה שעות לא ירד החיוך מהפנים. כמו שאמר הצליין הניו-זילנדי, המקום הזה פשוט קסום. ואם הוא אומר, מהמקום ממנו בא, אז זו באמת מחמאה גדולה.
      ליום הזה יש שני מסלולים אפשריים, והדרך שבחרתי היא הדרך שבה הרוב הולכים. היא קשה יותר אך גם יפה יותר, והיא נקראת ״דרך נפוליאון״. ואכן הצדק עמו

      Off I go!

      April 23 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

      Travel day and hiking day
      Already change of plans. Due to pretty lousy weather tomorrow, rain and snow, I will walk half the distance already this afternoon instead, since the sun will appear this afternoon 🙏 But first, most important, I will pick up my Pilgrim passport in St-Jean-Pied-de-Port, which is my stating point for the pilgrimage. 🫠Read more

      Valcarlos -Roncesvalles

      August 24, 2019 in France ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

      Der Weg von Arnegui nach Valcarlos ist für meinen Geschmack schon steil, aber es wird auf jeden Fall noch viel mehr, schließlich muss ich noch von jetzt 500m auf 1100 Höhenmeter. Also Kaffeepause in Valcarlos. Meine vierbeinigen Freunde möchten meinen Rucksack auch nicht tragen. Es ginge ihnen gut, dort wo sie sind, auf ihrer furchtbar steilen Koppel am Hang.Read more

      Day 2 - Borda to Burguete

      August 22, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

      What a difference a day makes! We woke this morning to a spectacular sunrise! Yesterday’s fog had cleared and we were fortunate to enjoy amazing views the entire day. This was another tough day full of really strenuous climbs. Early on I was with my friends from last night, but soon met up with a group of Texans from Houston. Absolutely lovely people, and I really enjoyed walking with them. They made me feel at home amongst their group. All my friends stayed n Roncesvalles, but I trudged on to Burguete, to stay at the Hostel Burguete - Hemingways’s home in Basque Spain. It was nice to have a private room for the night, but I’ll be glad to be back with friends!Read more
