    Camino de Santiago

    June 8, 2019 in France ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

First day on the Camino - Saint Jean Pied a Port to Rocesvalles.
To be continued next month by bike.
So we had Declan drive us the first 8km up the hill to Orisson and headed from there into the hills, along with numerous other eager and new-to-the-trail pilgrims, on foot and bike.
A beautiful day in the Pyranees and pretty easy walking.

  • Day112

    June 21, 2018 in France ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We began our hike out of Saint Jean this morning and immediately began to climb steeply up a narrow road. It was very foggy as we climbed, AND SO MUGGY!! I probably could have filled my water bottle with how much sweat rolled off my face and body 😂.

Orisson is a lovely place with gracious hosts. Bonus for us when we were given a room with just two beds, so still haven’t had to experience the bunk beds with numerous people, yet. That will be tomorrow in Roncesvalles.

We walked a bit with some German women, and I was able to use a tiny bit of German that was somewhere tucked in the back of my brain. 😂 Then we caught up to Richard (who we met on our shuttle ride the other day). He is from California. In the common eating room there were so many people from different countries... German, Swiss, Dutch, Astonian, Italian, Russian, Brazilian, French, Canadian, and American...all with different and moving reasons for doing the Camino.

I will try and put a video on Facebook with some footage I took today.

    Valcarlos -Roncesvalles

    August 24, 2019 in France ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Also Kaffeepause in Valcarlos. Read more

    Hotel Clementenia, Arneguy

    August 23, 2019 in France ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

    August 23, 2019 in France ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Erstes Quellwasser gezapft. Herrlich!Read more

    And so it begins ...

    September 10, 2017 in France ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

... with a single step on a French cobblestone lane under a stone arch which has seen millions of pilgrims over many centuries. Coleen and I add our names to the traveling ledger of wayfarers who have preceded us. Today was a short day but a steep up thru the mists and rains of the Pyrenees. Tomorrow we will summit these mountains and nightfall will find us sleeping under Spanish skies.Read more

Long walk with lots of crazy wind!!

    July 5, 2017 in France ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Could barely sleep last night from the sound of a wind storm. The wind continued all day while we walked across the Pyrenees. Naturally, the wind was either blowing us back or sideways. So we had to walk uphill against the wind. 😣

Arrived at Roncesvalles around 2:30, had a brief rest, and continued on to Espinal. About 15 miles altogether.

    Orisson Wednesday September 27

    September 27, 2017 in France ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Foggy in St. Jean. Walked around a bit hoping the fog would lift. Left for Orisson around 0930 and enjoyed a steep climb with 19 pounds on my back. At top, had to make the bunk bed with very thin mattress covers and will put sleeping bag on top. Should be cold tonight as it is quite breezy now and we were provided thin blankets.

Several couples that stayed in St. Jean decided to stay as well as the climb to Roncesvalles is steep. I have 9 miles tomorrow and am not looking forward to it..

    June 22, 2015 in France ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Read more
