      First Fet

      There are lots of little towns near Luz and each has a town Fet each year , usually in summer where there is fireworks , a DJ and lots of people of all ages , many family’s and reminds me of the Christmas carols at home .
      My first Fet was in Esterre , the town next to Luz and the fireworks for this one were the best of all the Fets I went to this trip. The DJ played we are the champions during it so I found it pretty funny this happened in a small French town with only some English speakers haha.
      We went to Jaques papaus for lunch and he had the most amazing view over the valley.
      There are markets on Monday morning and so Lise and I went for a walk around and got some brekkie from the Boulangerie too.
      I’ve been trying to make a memory album on the go so I spent an afternoon sticking things I’ve collected in :)      Les mer

      Workin girl

      Peep the first pic is me with the mayor of Luz! There was a ceremony in the square ( which the kitchen window of their apparement overlooks) that the mayor had to do a speech at with lots of important army people dressed up. So when Laurent had put his fancy attire on he told me this doesn’t happen often so said this was my only chance to get a proper photo with the mayor. So as he is the mayor we got a quick photo outside the hotel. Haha.

      I worked my first day the day after I arrived and have been doing a big mixture of ironing, washing, cleaning rooms, making beds, vacuuming, helping at the bar, and a bunch of other stuff. We all just kind of do everything.

      There are some other girls my age who I work with and they are all very sweet and we have lots of fun. They all speak a bit of English so we communicate with a bit of words with a bit of exaggerated expressions and charades actions sometimes but they are so funny and some of the things they say in English are just hilarious. I’ve been learning my way around the laundry room as we have made a deal that I help them improve their English and they help me learn French so we have made a vocab list. They know more English than I know French so I try to practice more when I have free time. Gosh I wish I learnt a language in school 🙄🤓

      The hotel is has very pretty views from the windows and the apartment in Les Templiers (they have two hotels - Les Sims and Les Templiers, 2 doors down from each other) is so so nice. We saw some cute birds too. In the photo is Emma and Laurine at Les Sims <3      Les mer

      Medieval festival

      When in the south of France …
      There is a annual medieval festival held at the castle a 20 minute walk from where I’m staying. It used to be a proper castle and had heaps of market stalls and there were more people here on this day than usual. There were also spectacles of flame throwing and juggling, of horse riding where they then had to break each other’s sticks (we learnt about this in history but I forgot the name of this sport) and archery too. There was also a ‘royal family’ that was all dressed up and got front row seats.
      Lise and I walked under the stilt people and made a wish too :)      Les mer

      The Greatest Day of Alfred's Life

      We camped out on the mountain for about 7 hours or so and it was just one massive party really! The time went really quick and ngl I had way more fun sitting on the mountain than I thought I would! Alfred's hammock building skills have demonstrated why he needs to do 1 more subject before he's a real engineer 👀 I also GOT MY BUCKET HAT !! Pizza in town for dinner and preparing for our massive travel day tomorrow...Les mer

      Marktdag

      In Bagnères-de-Bigorre is het marktdag. Het volledige centrum is een grote markt. Fantastische rieten manden en tassen. Wollen vesten, fruit, groenten noem maar op. Jammer de we niets extra's mee kunnen. Even koffie doen, naast het terras wordt tafelwijn per anderhalve liter verkocht, voor € 2,20 (inclusief statiegeld!). Dat kúnnen we niet laten lopen.Les mer

      Weer op de pedalen

      Zes uur ging het wekkertje weer. Aan de slag om de fietsen weer op te tuigen. Het is nog vrij donker maar de top van de Pic du Midi de Bigorre ligt al in het zonnetje. Het is een aantal dagen geleden dat deze top zich heeft laten zien, ze was steeds gehuld in dikke wolken. Even over half acht vertrekken we.Les mer

      Stacaravan

      Op camping Monloo (met overdekt zwembad) worden we naar onze (houten) stawagen gebracht. Met een soort van inpandig terras waarvan we de zijkanten open en dicht kunnen doen. Dat is fijn wanneer het noodweer komt.

      Mmmm, er is hier echt niets te merken van slecht weer. Voelt best een beetje bizar, alsof we hebben overdreven. Warm, droog en zonnig. Boven de Pyreneeën zien we wel dikke wolken en af en toe opeens een hele frisse bries, verder niet. De weersverwachting blijft rekening houden met 'spookweer', dus we zijn toch blij dat we hier heel luxe tot maandag zitten. Het volgende stuk is weer behoorlijk pittig en we zijn blij dat niet te moeten doen met de dreiging van onweer.

      Mijn mapje van mijn telefoon bleek bij de opladers te liggen en Mario heeft de tent uitgerold en daar bleek het routeboekje van de Katharenroute in de liggen. Mooi rond nu, maar goed bruikbaar. Heel prettig voor het bepalen van een dagelijkse route.      Les mer

      Luieren

      Geen wekker, vannacht heeft het wel behoorlijk geregend maar geen gekkigheid. Rustig opstaan, kopje thee. Was draaien, alle tassen leeggehaald, op z'n kop gezet en weer ingeruimd. Rustig naar de supermarkt. En dan zit er maar een ding op. Hapje, drankje en kaartje leggen.Les mer

      Nog éven rust

      5. juni 2022, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      Vier nachten in een stacaravan, voelt toch raar. Inmiddels wil het weer onbestendig blijven. Steeds einde dag / avond wordt er regen verwacht. We stappen daarom morgenochtend vroeg op de fiets. Alle kleding is gewassen, alle tassen opgeruimd en ingeruimd (voorzover ze niet in gebruik zijn). Met eten zijn we heel creatief bezig met maken van soepjes. Vandaag, eerste Pinksterdag, wilde er in de ochtend nog wel iets open zijn. Morgen, tweede Pinksterdag lijkt alles gesloten. Niet alleen winkels, maar ook horeca. Verder is het onze slubberwijn opmaken en een spelletje doen of een boekje lezen.

      Bestemming morgen is Saint Bertrand de Comminges. Voor we daar op een camping neerstrijken willen we naar de Grottes de Gargas. Grotten met rotstekeningen, dat hebben we allebei nog niet in het echt gezien, dus dat willen we graag bekijken. Op de site staat dat we moeten reserveren, morgenochtend maar een poging doen om dit telefonisch te doen.

      De Katharenroute is het aankomende stuk nogal grillig. Op het Office van Tourism de suggestie gekregen om de Véloroute 81 te nemen. Deze ligt is noordelijker en is minder grillig. We nemen dit ernstig in overweging. We zullen zien wat we morgen doen. Nu nog even niets-doen, en hopen dat onze spieren morgen weer in beweging willen komen.      Les mer

      Lourdes - Spiritual preparation

      After months of physical and mental preparation, today was a day of Spiritual Preparation while discovering Lourdes.
      At first, the scale of touristy memorabilia shops made me think it was going to be a tick box process.
      But once in the Sanctuary it was Peaceful, prayerful, incredibly welcoming and a Blessing to witness. The Lourdes sanctuary precinct exists because of the 18 Apparitions of our Lady to St Bernadette. The message of Lourdes is “through Mary to Jesus”.
      Our highlight was the water gesture ceremony, a private process led by a Sister determined to ensure our experience was beautiful, moving and meaningful. The water gesture is a spiritual cleansing / healing of water, from the same Spring St Bernadette was told to wash in. We attended a Gregorian Chant Mass, spent some time at the grotto, lit a candle for all those we are holding in our prayers, a wonderful walking tour, walking in the steps of St Bernadette, by one of the Sisters, who challenged us to question ourselves and reflect. We attended the Procession of the Holy Eucharist in the underground Basilica that can accommodate 20,000 people! We ended our day with the most beautiful candlelight procession, attended by 1000s, all reciting, in unity, the rosary in their own language. I had my Mum’s rosary with me and I held her in my prayers.      Les mer
