    • Day 4

      Tuesday evening

      May 7 in France ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Busy busy working day today. I slept in later than I planned, so had a super quick jump under the shower, and then nipped out to get coffee and a croissant, before the first meeting (which was actually pushed to tomorrow). Lots of stuff to get through, even though the meetings were reduced to two, so I ended up working about nine hours in total. So I was quite wiped. I did consider eating out for dinner, but I was pretty full from finishing off last night's dinner for a late lunch (during meeting number 2 where I was mostly just listening and watching and making a few notes). So I decided to just head out and see what I decides. I did a lot of wandering, ate an ice cream, went to the supermarket for a couple of bits and bobs and then explored some more and found myself walking along a wonderful wall, with crashing waves on one side and beautiful clusters of little old buildings, in a gorgeous colour palette (that I am going to have to steal for some art), on the other side and lots of beautiful plants all the way along. And then that brought me back to opposite my apartment. Where I am settling down to an evening (or possibly one episode, because it's already 10pm) of Artful Dodger o Disney and baguette and butter and cheese. And maybe a glass of something (currently that something is fizzy water, but there is a choice of beer and prosecco in the fridge).

I realised that walks like that are what I do this for and why it's not a waste to go travelling while I have work to do. Because even after a nine-hour working day, I can still go and find that hour or so beauty and wonder.

      Cannes

      July 3, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Read more

Read more

    • Day 33

      Cannes (from the Cheap Seats)

      August 12, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

After joining the nuns for their morning mass (entirely in Italian so I didn’t stand a chance), I hop on the train to leave Florence. The journey takes me via Pisa and then along the Riviera coast of both Italy and France. Much of the route seems to be through tunnels but the glimpses I get of the Mediterranean Sea are stunning! I have a change at Ventimiglia, my last point within Italy, and I have just enough time to grab a quick station Macdonald’s just before my next train. I discover that Italian Macdonald’s sell hunks of Parmesan cheese as a snack (upon googling I’m informed it falls under the concept of ‘Pocket Cheese’) and I quickly add Italy to the list of places to consider relocating to.😉

I reach my hostel a few hours later than planned thanks to some unattended luggage being left around Cannes station. As I’m hauling my luggage up to my €25 a night bed, people come down the stairs towards me dripping in designer gear. It’s an apt metaphor for Cannes itself as I quickly discover that it’s a town full of people with money and those pretending to have money. The front street is lined with top line designer stores and the other streets are full of upmarket brands that certainly aren’t cheap but wouldn’t require multiple lottery wins to shop in. Most tourists flock to the second, while the first is lined with new range Lamborghinis, Porches, and Rolls Royces with foreign license plates.

Obviously Cannes is known for its film festival held each year in May. In summer however it’s very much a beach resort. There is still however ‘the’ red carpet and a small walk of fame with handprints of people like Leonardo DiCaprio, Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman. It’s incredibly understated to say it’s probably what Cannes is best know for.

Although it’s a small town, Cannes is incredibly busy and you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in a suburb of Paris. The waterfront is pretty but there’s only a tiny bit of public beach, the rest all fenced off for private clubs and restaurants. While it’s in a beautiful setting, I haven’t quite found the magic of Cannes yet but I settle in, enjoy the sea and get lost in a few French bookshops.

      5. Station

      June 27, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      Villa Thuret

      September 18, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

This was our 1st object of the day: Jardin botanique de la Villa Thuret a.k.a. Thuret Botanical Gardens.
The Gardens were created by Gustave Thuret, a French botanist with a special interest in algae, and was the first privately funded research laboratory in France.
Scientists were not the only ones to visit Gustave Thuret’s garden - it was also popular with diplomats and artists. In 1868, in “Letters of a Traveller”, Georges Sand wrote that it was “...The loveliest garden I have ever seen...”

So, as " botanical," it's more focused on trees, shrubs, etc. There were some things in Bloom, but not much.
What we found out was the fact that there are many artwork sculptures there.
as you can see, I took my share of pics.

It was also while we were there that rain caught up with us for a spell. Thankfully, it was not heavy, and we were able to shelter in a gazebo for perhaps 20 minutes. After that, it was more of a slight nuisance, and finally the skies brightened up

      British/ French monument

      September 16, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

Intrigued by both British and French flags flying we made our way past the end of the parapet to that monument. Turned out this was to commemorate the act of HMS Unbroken (P42) - Royal Navy U-class submarine. Commissioned in January 1942, she spent most of her wartime career in the Mediterranean. She landed saboteurs under the command of Captain Peter Churchill at Antibes - hense the monument at the place if landing. She then proceeded to Malta to reform the 10th Flotilla in June 1942.
As Fate would have it, Unbroken was transferred on loan to the Soviet Union on 26 June 1944, where she was renamed V-2 (Cyrillic: В-2). Sailing under Soviet flag, she sank the German submarine chaser UJ-1220 on 12 October 1944. She spent four years in Soviet service before being returned to the Royal Navy in 1949. She was scrapped at Gateshead from 9 May 1950.
We spent some time watching the windsail surfers and checked out a square in the Modern section of Antibes, which was perhaps 3-4 blocks from "our neighborhood"

By the walls of Bastion Saint Andre

      September 16, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

We came out on the other side of the Bastion to see more Roman ruins, a small dog park, and a back terrace of The Golden Beef restaurant (we skipped that one). We then continued on the old ramparts to another small square with a monument to Albert 1st of Belgium wo popularly referred to as Knight King
Dutch: Koning-Ridder, French: Roi-Chevalier) or ( as the case here)
Soldier King (Dutch: Koning-Soldaat, French: Roi-Soldat) in reference to his role during World War I.
The weather remained overcast and the sea churning
