      Bordeaux

      9. mai, Frankrike ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

We had a relatively late and relatively leisurely breakfast at the Brit Hotel, and decided it was only the wifi that matched the grim exterior. Anne raced back to the church at 8:30 for a pilgrim passport stamp, but it was closed.

We walked to the station to catch the 930 train to Bordeaux and arrived to a throng of inaction. There is one every 60 minutes today, so unsurprising. The train arrived a few minutes early snd left Shinkansen-style on the dot. It only had 3 carriages, but very light and modern- reading lights and charging points on each seat, and it ripped along. 45 mins on the first train, a 20 min change, 48 mins on the second train (to Agen) and a 90 minute wait, then around 1.75 hours to Bordeaux. We walked around Agen and had lunch vack at the station, so at Bordeaux we walked to the hotel (15 mins) and had a cup of tea. Hilton Garden Inn, and we continued a tradition by arriving a little before 3pm.. Lovely room, very quiet, and okay position.

The guy who checked us in suggested a way to see most of Bordeaux in 6 hours. It was much the same as the Bordeaux World Heritage Circuit we found later in a guide, so he did well. The city heart is 1810 hectares- 18 sq kms, so 4km x 4.5km - and we saw a lot of it. We walked north and saw old city gates, cathedrals, the old town, the river and more. it was a glorious day and a holiday, so the streets and esplanandes were crowded, and the restaurants along the streets were all full to overflowing. Not just in the main squares or on the main tourist strip: Bordeaux was crowded mile after mile. It was very warm: in the sun it felt as if we were perhaps being burned, but we are the latitude of Dunedin in NZ, so it was more warmth than sting. Sunglasses on (a first) and a T-shirt all day (another first) and crowds of more than 20 or 30 (another first since leaving Le Puy)

Bordeaux is a mixture of the old, three or four storey pale-tan limestone buildings from (say) Figeac, laid out with wide, straight streets, and then infinitely bigger, with some glorious grand old buildings scattered amongst the 3 or 4 storey facades, along with theatres, statues and parks. We walked until 7:00pm, had dinner in a trattoria, walked a bit more and caught the tram back. We were in the hotel by 8:45, and the sun was still shining. it is 9pm now and it is starting to set.

Some huge cathedrals and lovely little streets, a grand old Stock Exchange by the river and not a high-rise to be seen. It is a very different and unspoilt metropolis.

21,389 steps, 16.8km and 3 flights... hardly worth mentioning, really.

      la deuxième semaine

      27. april, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

      South toward the trail

      17. juni 2022, Frankrike ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

It was a confusing and tense morning of ticket and train matching. What would have been a simple fix in the old days of lots of station masters who can answer questions is now just a guy you wait in line for an hour to talk to who has no power to touch a Eurrail pass. I think God solved the problem for us. I think. 🤔 I activated our passes but according to my app it called my activation date my first day of travel (we get four) That leaves us one day short. I had reservations to get on the train today and I had activated the passes yesterday but my misunderstanding of what “activation” meant has us messed up. They say on the trail “the Way” will provide. The ticket collector was satisfied with the reservation tickets and didn’t actually check my Eurrail pass. That gives us back a day. The Way did provide. (Before you think I’m getting too mystical, read John 14:6. That’s my understanding of The Way.)

So now we are getting out of the city on the TGV going 300 km/hr for a smaller, slower town. Jon and I have never been to Bordeaux and since the train from Paris to St Jean ran though here anyway we decided to get off and look around. Paris, a city known for style and fashion was hard for me with my three practical zero fashion hiking outfits and no makeup or styling products. I’m sure I looked like a homeless person to them but on the trail I think I’ll fit right in.

I think the whole world is in a heat wave right now. It’s 104 F in Bordeaux. Yuck. It will cool off before the hike but it will also be rainy. Hmmmmm. Which is better?!

On the upside, our two rooms in the Hilton are luxurious compared to that one room in the hostel in Paris. (These were way cheaper too!)

I also saw another couple that was dressed like us- probably other Camino hikers. Slobs unite!

We went to the old town of Bordeaux which turns out was settled by the Romans. I drank from an ancient Roman well (I’m sure the water was fine) and we stumbled on a cathedral that was built in 800’s. No… not 1800’s! My bucket list thing was to put my 104F feet into the Miroir d eau.

Considering Europe is known for their lack of ice and tepid beer I’m surviving considerably better than I’d have thought. I just really want an ice cold water though.

      Last day in Bordeaux

      10. mai 2022, Frankrike ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

Our last day in Bordeaux was unique - we went to La Cite du vin, which is a wine museum!! It was a really modern museum that took you thru everything to do with wine that you could think of, and ended with a tasting on the top of the building overlooking the city. Was a very cool experience.

Then we headed over to Bassin de Lumieres for a one hour show. This was absolutely incredible! This exhibit is very hard to describe. It was works of art, paintings, graphically set to music and somewhat animated - displayed over the water, and on all the walls and floor in an old MASSIVE submarine bay from WW2. The French have done a remarkable job of repurposing old buildings. This literally brought me to tears at one point, as it was almost overwhelming to all the senses. The videos and pictures won’t do it justice. It was absolutely mesmerizing.

We also walked by the most amazing wine store I’ve ever seen. Three stories, straight up, all displayed on a spiral staircase. It caught my attention.

Finished the evening hanging around a Starbucks (to use their wifi to plan our next city), and then had wine, bread, cheese and meats for dinner sitting outside at a cafe. Beautiful night.

Mad og vin tour i Bordeaux

      27. april, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Spanish tapas - Can't help ourselves!

      8. april 2023, Frankrike ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

After our exertions trying to get through all the Saint-Emilion samples on offer this afternoon, we decided to venture back into Bordeaux for some food. We came across this Tapas bar (El Pata Negra), which was completely empty at the time. By the end of our meal, as you can see, the place was bouncing.
I know we are in France, but we just love our Spanish tapas.

      Restaurant Ottoman

      27. april, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Dejlig oplevelse!Les mer
