    May 4, 2018 in France

Wake up late -> take a nap -> go out for a beer and walk around

Trying to get in the new mindset of having no schedule and no obligations, but it’s not that easy! We are formatted to be busy and productive. We’ll need a few more beers to get there :)

    Ruhetag 1 in Bordeaux

    October 6, 2018 in France

Read more

    Bordeaux: Cité du Vin

    June 12, 2018 in France

We had to visit the Cité du Vin (City of Wine), the International Wine Museum. We enjoyed tasting some wines from around the world. We were given a chip card, which we inserted into the slot, then we picked which wine we wanted to taste and it was dispensed automatically. At the end the chip card is totaled up. Each of our tastes was about 1€50 (about $1.75). There were more expensive ones, of course. So many choices, but Dean still had to drive, so we limited ourselves.Read more

    Le Cite de Vin

    February 16, 2017 in France

Cool this morning so I headed to the wine museum. It was huge and took me 4.5 hours to get through it. Lots of information and lots of hands on stuff. I finished off with my tasting on the 8th floor overlooking the city. They actually were actually pouring a 2014 Note Bene from Black hills winery and last week a 2013 Syrah from Painted Rock. I told the ladies I was from that region and they were full of questions and I was happy to talk about the okanagan wines. They even had a flyover of the okanagan featured in their film. It's a huge facility. They had absolutely no ice wines from Canada. Heading off to La Rochelle tomorrow. Booked myself into a hotel with my hotels bonus points and am using my one free night. After I check out tomorrow I will have another free night that u will use later. Yippee! Huge luxury bed!Read more

    June 12, 2018 in France

Our host's daughter could speak some English, and she helped us figure out the Park and Ride system for the Tram into Bordeaux. (It wasn't easy!) Bordeaux is an old French city on the Garrone river, with lots of 18th to 19th century mansions, a palace, a grand theater, and cathedrals of course. Renovations are ongoing, but they have a long way to go.

This is Place du la Bourse, the most famous picture-spot in the city with its Mirror d’Eau reflecting the grand palace, and the Three Graces Fountain in front. There are nice views of the river and its bridges too.

    Day 48

    July 17, 2017 in France

Bus day today, crossing the border from Spain into France again into Bordeaux

Only a short trip got in at 1 and we couldn't get in the hostel until 4 so we walked around and ticked off all the major sights in the afternoon

Then had a 3 course meal for dinner which was cheap only €17.60 Prawns, Steak and chips, then a delicious chocolate cake and custard and almonds and it was great!!

My feet are full of blisters and are absolutely killing me so tomorrow will be a day of rest. Supposed to get to 38 degrees and the hostel has no aircon but a day of chilling out is needed. The fatigue is definitely catching up now but these next couple of stops before Paris will be very chilled out😊

    Monuments in Bordeaux

    June 12, 2018 in France

This is a monument to the French Revolutionaries. It was good to see it has been cleaned and is nice and white again. The cathedral is also being cleaned up. The tower was built separately, to reduce the instability of the cathedral. And we saw a nice historic city gate with a grand facade.

    Bordeaux.. Road Trip!

    August 19, 2015 in France

Road Trip!! We meet Deb at Avis, pick up our Renault Cleo and off we go! We quickly discover that in France the roads are narrow and no one follows road rules.

First stop is a quick pitstop at Versailles to check out Europes biggest castle. We arrive at the castle and yes- it is huge. Not as huge though as the queue of people to get in! We decide to skip it and keep moving.

The 5 hour drive to Bordeaux is somewhat uneventful aside from the drama at the toll booths, not accepting our credit cards despite charging an exorburant 50euro plus over 2 tolls! We finally arrive in Bordeaux and its lovely- we can see how its earnt its UNESCO heritage listing. There are castles everywhere, complete with round turrets- just like in the fairytales!

Wine, dinner, check out town and its bed time after a long day travelling.. we are in wine country!

  • Day12

Following the decision to have a few days off the bike I thought I'd get south quick then spend a few days riding back up the coast before heading into the Pyrenees next week.

After leaving La Rochelle in perfect riding weather (gutting) I jumped on the train for a few hours in Bordeaux before heading to Biarritz.

Pleased I stopped in Bordeaux and may well come back to spend a vew days riding round the vineyards but didn't need much more than a couple of hours riding round the city. Nice place but would recommend only a day there.

Onto Biarritz and arrived late afternoon and first impressions are I'm going to like this place. Great coastal town with stunning beaches and rocky coastline. The town itself is a real mix French style (the money kind) and cool surfers so I'm fitting right in!

    Will explore more tomorrow.
