Spanish tapas - Can't help ourselves!

      8. april 2023, Frankrig ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

After our exertions trying to get through all the Saint-Emilion samples on offer this afternoon, we decided to venture back into Bordeaux for some food. We came across this Tapas bar (El Pata Negra), which was completely empty at the time. By the end of our meal, as you can see, the place was bouncing.
I know we are in France, but we just love our Spanish tapas.

Sikke en fest vi faldt ind i. 🥰

      Final night in Bordeaux

      10. oktober 2022, Frankrig ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Tonight we treated ourselves to a tasting menu at L’Observatoire Du Gabriel, a Michelin star restaurant about 10 minutes from our apartment. There was still a bit of drizzly rain about, so we took umbrellas and walked very carefully on the wet cobblestones.

The restaurant is situated in Place De La Bourse, a very grand square which faces the Garonne river. From the moment you enter the building the staff are there to greet and assist you as needed. We were escorted to an elevator and taken up to level 2 where we were again greeted by someone who relieved us of our umbrellas and jackets.

We were seated at our table, which was in the centre of the room. The sommelier then brought over the wine list (as big as large book) and our menu options. We could choose a 5 course or 9 course tasting menu, so elected to go for the 5 course option as we just didn’t think we could manage 9 courses. Just as well as, in addition to the 5 courses, you receive a savoury pastry, 4 appetisers, an amuse-bouche, and petite fours at the conclusion of the meal.

We started with a glass of Krug champagne to celebrate our last night in France in this wonderful restaurant. I had never had Krug before (it was very good), so another thing ticked off on the bucket list. Poor Ian was trying to navigate his way through the massive wine ‘list’; in the end, we asked the sommelier for some assistance. As the menu was predominantly seafood based we went with a white from Château Olivier in honour of Mimi’s family. It was a Gran Cru Classé from the Pessac-Léognan region we had visited on Saturday, and turned out to be an excellent choice.

All the decisions had now been made, so we could sit back and enjoy the wonderful ambiance, fabulous wine, delicious food, great service and, of course, the company! We started with a savoury pastry, followed by four fabulous appetisers. Next was an amuse bouche comprising grilled sardine with white beans in a vinaigrette in a crisp tart shell.

Then began the Saturn Menu in 5 Acts: OYSTER - from Matthieu Dumas slightly vinegar, beef tartar and iodised rice cream; MUSHROOMS FROM HERE - in 3 ways, barnacles and whelks candied in a juice; EEL- lightly smoked with onion in various expressions, the chef’s signature dish; COD - cooked as a croque monsieur in a basquaise way; and, finally for dessert HONEY - from our hives, meringue and citrus emulsion, roasted fig and sangria. We had an espresso to finish the meal and were offered petite fours, but were too full so they boxed them up and we had them for breakfast. We also received a small citrus cake each and a signed copy of the menu.

I have to applaud Ian for getting through the menu, especially the oyster course as he isn’t particularly fond of oysters or steak tartare, but he did enjoy the dish.

The experience was wonderful from the moment we arrived until when we rolled out the door about 3+ hours later.

      Bytur i Bordeaux

      25. april, Frankrig ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Bordeaux Wine Museum, Bordeaux, France

      1. december 2022, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Today we toured a wine museum in Bordeaux that taught us about the history of wine in Bordeaux. Unexpectedly, Bordeaux was initially just a trading port used for Italian wine with the British Isles more than 2000 years ago. The first to plant vines in Bordeaux were the Vivisques, a celtic tribe. Eventually Bordeaux wine would come to out number Italian wine in England.

Early wine trade consisted of a 4 party process. The wine estate, the broker (who was a middle man), the merchant (who bought barrels, and did aging and bottling), and lastly the consumer. Note that since the merchant did the bottling and eventually the branding the identity of wines was very different than it is today. Wines would have been more likely named JP Morgan Chase than Château Cheval. These merchants fitness a castle named the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce in 1705.

The first informal classification of Médoc wines was created by (get this) Thomas Jefferson. While serving as the ambassador to France he visited Bordeaux vineyardd in 1787. He gave a very precise description of the quality of the wines, which he classified into 3 categories. This became the standard used for the first classification of wines, requested by Napoleon for the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris. The 1855 Classification consists of 5 classes for 61 châteaux.

Beginning in the 17th century, Dutch migrants started settling in Bordeaux. They brought with them their knowledge of draining land and they did so in Bordeaux. This greatly increased the farmable land in the appellation allowing for larger yields. The Dutch also bright with them the process used to asepticize the barrels with sulfur. Previously, wine had to be drunk within one year of harvest or it would go bad.

In the 18th century, the English and Irish also had a migration to Bordeaux. The first bottling factory was created by an Irish man, Mr Mitchell, in Chartrons district. Never underestimate how serious the Irish are about drinking.

We also learned of a story where one enterprising merchant started trading Bordeaux wine with English soldiers stationed in India. On one less successful trip he brought some unsold barrels home. He realized the wine aged perfectly during the long trip. This eventually created a brand of wine "Retour des Indes" or "returned from India." He started sending them on cheaper trips to Portugal and back with the same label. 😂

Eventually, some Bordeaux wines started seeing counterfeit labels from other regions. To help combat this, bottling and labeling was moved from merchants, to the wine estates to ensure authenticity and quality at home in the region.

Edit: I'm adding this months after our visit. I found a good, quick video that shows cork production.

      Nur ne Zwischenstation

      17. oktober 2023, Frankrig ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Was die steigenden Temperaturen doch ausmachen.
