      Heute ist der erste Urlaubstag 😎.
      Es war schon ein bisschen frisch beim Frühstück und in der Nacht haben wir durch geheizt.
      Der Platzwart hat uns seinen letzten Platz gegeben den er nur zur Not vermieten.
      Zu meiner Überraschung wollte er kein Geld von mir, das konnte ich gar nicht glauben, habe ihm 5€ Trinkgeld gegeben.
      Nach 165 Km Rue Nationale schleichen sind wir doch auf die Autobahn. Bin überrascht wie schön es in Frankreich ist.
      Auf einem Parkplatz haben wir ein Päuschen gemacht ,eine Currywurst gegrillt und dann gleich weiter. Unterwegs hat Dagi unseren Campingplatzführer und Landkarte studiert.
      In Royat haben wir einen netten Campingplatz gefunden, hier lassen wir den Abend ausklingen, glaube heute Nach müssen wir nicht heizen.
      Von hier sind es Morgen noch ca. 400 Km bis zum Atlantik. 🙂      Lue lisää

      Clermont-Ferrand Day 2

      I don't want to say Clermont-Ferrand is a bust, but the weather is really making it suck. Cindy got to feeling better, but still isn't back to normal. We searched for some cold weather gear, to no avail, as most stores are closed here on Mondays.
      We made it out to the Visitors Center and got some good information from a great English speaking worker. So, we bought a 48 hour visit card as well as a reduced price 3 day public transport ticket. The black stone cathedral was right across the Place, so we went inside. It was cold, but at least there was no wind. It was fairly ornate, but so dark inside, it was difficult to see anything. Stopped at a nearby bakery for a couple sandwiches and ate at the apartment.
      Later, we went out to visit the old town of Montferrand. Seems like this part of town, which is quite close to the modern Michelin Stadium, has seen better days. I wouldn't call it a dump, but it was dumpy. Just a couple of half timbered buildings and the big church was crumbling inside. There's not much left of the old city walls, but some of it is still visible. Our visit there was short, and we came back to the apartment for the rest of the day.      Lue lisää

      Clermont-Ferrand Day 1

      I don't have much to say yet. It looks like there are some interesting things here, but the weather and a cold that Cindy picked up is definitely discouraging for an adventurous visit. We found a pharmacy that was open on Sundays, and ventured over. The wind seemed to always be in our face. There was also a bit of rain, but nothing that made us wet. So, medicine in hand, we made our way back to the apartment. We found a new fast food option not available in the US, O'Tacos, or French Tacos. They have nothing to do with taco, really, and the name implies something Irish, however that is not the case. A meat and sauce filled waffle-ish bread is the idea, served with fries, of course. We got bowls, so we didn't experience the bread part. The bowl is a filling over, you guessed it, fries. Not rice. It was different, but amazingly tasty. I wouldn't not get it again.Lue lisää

      Clermont-Ferrand Day 3

      We tried again today for some winter gear, as the temperatures are not forecast to increase at all while we're here. We found an outdoor outfitters by the cathedral. Super nice folks that were very helpful. The girl helping us said two weeks ago the temps were in the 30s (80sF), and this morning the temp was 3 (37F). Unfortunately, it hasn't gotten much warmer than that since we e been here. But, we found some hats and gloves, so we're off to get to the top of the highest local volcano.
      After a bit of a misguided start because the bus lines weren't properly marked, we made our way up the mountain. It was definitely colder there, and while we were in the Visitors Center waiting for the cog train, it started snowing lightly.
      After a bit of a wait, we finally got on the train and made our ascent to the station on the volcano. Thankfully we had found a hat and gloves to buy, as well as hoodies in Bourges, because the winds were strong and the temperature low. We climbed up the trail with the hundreds of others, mainly school kids, who were on the train with us. First stop was the remains and partial reconstruction of the Temple to Mercury, a Roman temple built along the the road from Lyon to Saintes, which was apparently a major highway of the 2nd century.
      Then we started to walk around the radio/satellite tower, but the wind was howling and it felt like we were high in the Alps in the middle of winter. So we turned around. A quick visit to the museum finished our jaunt and we returned to the train to go back down.
      Unfortunately, once back down, we had to wait nearly 2 hours to catch the bad back to the city. We didn't realize that until we had been standing outside a long time. A few minutes of sun alternated with clouds, wind and snow. All in all, not the best of vacation outings.      Lue lisää

      Rejält blåsigt och regnskurar gjorde att vi helt enkelt flydde in i en restaurang som vi såg.
      Tyvärr fullbokat, men vi ska se. Jodå vi fick ett bord.
      Stället hade jätteskön bakgrundsmusik.
      Världens gulligaste servitris som hela tiden bad om ursäkt för att hon inte var bra på engelska.
      Hon lyckades ändå förklara vad som stod på griffeltavlan för oss som inte kan franska, så vi kunde beställa.
      Fantastiskt gott! Samma med det vita vinet. Bästa maten hittills.

      Vom Weingut ab auf die Piste 🚐

      Wir sind frühs gestartet von dem Weingut und Überland ging es weiter Richtung Clermont- Ferrand. Unsere Nacht war dort so ruhig, dass es fast schon unheimlich war😁 Wir hatten extra geschaut, dass wir mautfrei fahren, doch leider war eine Brücke dabei, die uns gleich mal 15€ gekostet hat. Man konnte aber gar nicht vorher abfahren. Naja..Da haben wir bisher schon so viel Geld für Maut bezahlt, da machen es die paar Kröten auch nicht mehr.😁 ansonsten war der Tag eher unspektakulär. Mathilda macht jetzt übrigens immer großen Quatsch mit uns und schaut einen von unten nach oben an 😁Lue lisää

      Despite suffering from heat exhaustion 🥵, today didn't turn out badly after all!

      I met a lovely French lady, and thanks to Google Translate, we managed to arrange an evening walk to the city park. A colonial garden with 2 sequoia trees in which had recently been struck by lightning 🌩

      I felt it was a lovely reminder that beauty is retained despite what life throws at you 💚

      And, I still managed 13,463 steps!      Lue lisää

      I Bretagne og Normandiet har orkanen Ciaran hærget i nat, og ved Pointe du Raz, hvor vi holdt for tre år siden, har de slået rekorden med vindstød på 57,5 m/sek (207 km/t). Så vi er glade for, at vi ikke var der, men selv i vores lille landsby i Auvergne stormede og regnede det godt i nat, og vi vågnede en del gange. Så vi havde ikke de største forventninger til i dag, men kørte langsomt afsted mod nord, fandt et sted og handle lidt, og pludselig klarede det op og der kom blå himmel.

      Vi lagde så kursen mod vulkanen Puy de Dôme, som ligger lige vest for Clermont-Ferrand, og på vej derop kørte vi nærmest i “læ”, og dermed klart vejr, af rækken af gamle vulkaner der ligger på en nord-syd gående linje. Vi kunne dog godt se, at toppene blev ved med at ligge i skyer, og da alt vores tøj og sko lige var blevet tørt efter vandreturen i går, havde vi ikke så meget lyst til at skulle ud og gå i silende regn eller slud igen.

      Men vulkanen Puy de Dôme kan man jo køre til toppen af med et lille tog! Og det blev dagens tur. Faktisk er det en tandhjulsbane. Turen er på 5,1 km og stiger 350 højdemeter, så et tandhjul under toget griber fast i en række tænder (tandstænger) mellem skinnerne, for at toget kan køre så stejlt både op og ned. Det er ikke så tit vi kommer op på en top på den måde! Men sjovt nok at prøve lidt andet en gang i mellem, og som forventet var der absolut ingen udsigt fra toppen i dag!

      Nede igen var det dog nogenlunde klart, og vi kørte videre ind til Clermont-Ferrand, hvor vi holder for natten.      Lue lisää

      Clermont-Ferrand was the closest major city to Buron. Only about a 30 minute drive. It was our stop for dinner, but we ended up doing a lot of evening sightseeing in this city.

      Clermont-Ferrand boasts a 13th century Cathedral and a 6th Century Basilica. The Cathedral was Gothic in style and beautiful inside and out. The Basilica was imposing on the outside, but plain on the inside. However the Basement featured a beautiful shrine. Dave did some romanticing that his ancestors may have come to this very spot for worship on special occasions.

      Other than that, Clermont-Ferrand featured many fountains and statues. It is also often sighted to be one of Frances cuter major cities. It had a decent sized mall complete with the obligatory H&M (we've seen them everywhere throughout Europe, even in Serbia and Romania). We also stumbled across a Christmas market. In Romania, we raved about Vin Fiert (mulled wine), but here we got to try the French version, "Vin Chaud". Vin Fiert was sweeter and more heavily spiced. Vin Chaud was a better wine and less sweet but also less spiced (at least the versions we tried). We agreed we'd have preferred the French wine and sweetness (we're not all that into sweet things), but with the Romanian spices. They also had Vin Chaud Blanc (Mulled White Wine), which, surprisingly, might have been the best of them all. It was hard to tell if the spices were the same or not.

      In the center of the Market there was a statue of Pope Urban II (pictured). Google maps told us the statue commemorates this spot as where Pope Urban began the First Crusadesin 1095.      Lue lisää

      Clermont - Ferrand 🇫🇷

      Nachdem wir eine ziemlich laute und stürmische Nacht hinter uns hatten, sind wir gleich frühs auf einen anderen Parkplatz gefahren, um von dort aus in die Stadt zu laufen. Ein niedliches kleines Örtchen, mit einer wahnsinnig schönen Kathedrale. Und da wir nichts so richtig zum Mittagessen gefunden haben (wo auch Lotti mit rein durfte) haben wir uns bei Subway etwas geholt und kurzerhand eine windstille Ecke draussen umgebaut (haben wir übrigens so stehen lassen, da die Subway Mitarbeiterin sehr unhöflich war aber psssssstttttt....). Anschließend sind wir dann weitergefahren und sind jetzt in La Semnadise...ein Ort mit 50 Einwohnern und einem Naturcampingplatz. Hier ist absolut nichts, ausser ein paar Tiere und unheimlich viel Ruhe - hier bleiben wir bis Freitag 😊Lue lisää
