      Zwiebelsuppe in Chartres

      13. syyskuuta 2023, Ranska ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

      16. toukokuuta, Ranska ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Imposante Kirche in Chartres.

      Paris

      3. toukokuuta 2023, Ranska ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Well, my adventure has finally begun! After staying up all night to finish prepping my house for my Airbnb guests and catching a 5:50 am Santa Barbara Airbus, I arrived in France at Charles de Gaulle airport at around 10:30 am after a good flight. I breezed through customs, picked up my one checked suitcase and caught a train headed to Paris. I then transferred to the Metro to reach my hotel near the 14th adirrondissement.

I wanted a hotel close to the Gare Montparnasse train station for ease of heading out the next morning, so I booked the Arcadia Montparnasse Hotel via Booking.com and it was adequate. Typical Parisian tiny room in an old building, but it was clean with a comfortable bed.

After settling in, I ventured out to the Catacombs of Paris, which I had previously booked. Who would have thought that there could be so many human bones all in one place, and to have them all stacked so neatly on top of that…amazing! It only takes about an hour to walk through and I highly recommend a visit if you’re in Paris.

Next up, I had booked a ride in the elevator to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower. While the views were nice, I could have done without the crowds and touristy atmosphere. I attempted to take it all in, however, and enjoyed a chèvre sandwich and a glass of sparkling rose while enjoying the view. So, been there, done that and have checked it off my list.

After returning to my hotel room and taking a short nap, it was time for my boat ride on the Seine. It was tempting to skip it because I was so tired, but I rallied and headed out. The Metro is always my friend in large cities and I love the ease of getting around in Paris by way of their extensive Metro system.

The lines to board the boat felt like a cattle call unfortunately, and I was quickly questioning my choice to skip the boat ride and stay in for the night. I was at first disappointed that I couldn’t get a spot on the top level of the boat, but settled for a good second choice along the railing of the lower level. It turned out that a boat ride on the Seine at sunset is beautiful! The lights from the charming, French architecture buildings reflecting off the water is magical. And then there are the people who gather on the banks of the Seine to enjoy drinks, a picnic dinner or to enjoy conversation with friends. I’m happy that I dragged myself out of my hotel room for a boat ride on the Seine, and if you’re ever in Paris you should too.

It was after 10:00 pm by the time we disembarked and I headed in search of the closest Metro station to take me back to my hotel. The crowds were still out in full force and I reveled in the activity of tourists enjoying a city full of beauty, charm and fun!

After another Metro ride, I stumbled upon Amorino while walking back to my hotel. Call it luck, but this just happens to be my daughters and my favorite gelato chain. I, of course, had to have a rose shaped gelato consisting of three flavors on a sugar cone, topped with a macaron. Blood orange, pistachio, and white chocolate black pepper were my choices with a caramel macaron. It was the perfect end to a fun and exhausting day! 🥰

      Versaille

      9. kesäkuuta 2023, Ranska ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Today we went to the Palace of Versaille. It was a busy day. We left the hotel at 7:30am and returned at 6:30pm.

We had booked a guided tour and return train journey and it was definitely the right move. Versaille gets 39 million visitors each year and you can see why.

Our guide was brilliant and he guided us through the palace, where we saw the Hall of Mirrors and the royal apartments where the three kings, Louis XIV, Louis XV and the ill-fated Louis XVI and his queen Marie Antoinette lived, before they both lost their heads in the revolution.

We were also guided through the gardens and the Chateau Trianon where Marie Antoinette lived for a number of years, as well as Petite Trianon, the rural village built in the grounds of the palace purely for the amusement of Marie Antoinette.

It was a special day and everything there was amazing. Words and pictures do not do it justice in any way. This is just a small selection of the 100s of photos we took.

      Day trip

      18. syyskuuta 2023, Ranska ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

We took a day trip out to the Chateau de Versailles. It was about a 90 min train ride out to the country. The palaces may have been some of the largest I’ve ever seen, and so ornate.

What was even more exceptional were the gardens! Acres and acres of gardens, forests and fountains. Absolutely beautiful.

We rented a golf cart to take us to the furthest parts, which turned out to be really fun. Then we walked the garden sections. Beautiful crisp fall weather - couldn’t have asked for a nicer time out there.

We had a bit more time left so we headed to the Paris Aquarium. Somewhat small, but nicely done. Adam really likes Aquariums - the things you learn about your adult children when you travel together.

      Der König lebte nicht schlecht

      6. syyskuuta 2023, Ranska ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

      Versailles

      24. helmikuuta, Ranska ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Took the train to Versailles for the day. Hélène our host accompanied us to the gates. The palace was as grand and opulent as they said it would be. We learned about the many king Louis. It’s amazing how the nobility lived on a totally different planet than the rest of France. No wonder there was a revolution.
Afterwards we had a fantastic French meal with our hosts.

      Palace of Versailles

      21. kesäkuuta 2022, Ranska ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Versailles was definitely one of the most amazing places I’ve ever seen, and the most absolutely ludicrous display of wealth imaginable. I said the Louvre made the Spanish palacio real look like a dollhouse, but Versailles does the same thing to the Louvre. The palace is amazing in itself, and Lexi and I spent a good few hours exploring it. The highlight in there was the hall of mirrors, which was not only beautiful and ornate room but also one of incredible historical significance, as many important treaties were signed there: the treaty of Paris ending the American revolution, the 1871 treaty of Versailles ending the Franco-Prussian war (and marking the beginning of the German empire), and the 1919 treaty of Versailles ending WW1 were all signed in that room. The palace was the home of the Kings Louis 14-16 (and their families and servants with an estimated 10,000 living on the grounds at once) until the family was driven out by the French Revolution, and later was also used by Napoleon Bonaparte. The really incredible part, though, was the palacial gardens. They are just unimaginably expansive, yet covered with ornate statues, fountains, and hedges that are still perfectly - and I mean PERFECTLY - manicured. Seriously, I would estimate that several thousand gardeners must still work there today to keep the grounds looking the way they are. The grounds we also home to some additional homes that the royal family would spend time relaxing in, as well as a series of cottages that Marie Antoinette had built because she liked to pretend she was a peasant (and she clearly had no clue what that word meant). Lexi and I were literally at this palace for over 8 hours, and even taking a bike rental and using their shuttle, we only were able to see a fraction of the grounds of the palace. It is really unbelievable to think that a family used to actually live there.Lue lisää
