      Espelette

      September 19, 2022 in France ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

      July 1, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Was? Schon Halbzeit? Kann nich wahr sein...der ursprünglich geplante Ausflug ins Guggenheim Museum nach Bilboa wurde verschoben. Da startet heute die Tour de France da wollen wir nicht stören. Also Kultur. Ab ins Hinterland. Ascain, Sare, Ainhoa, Espelette und St Jean Pied de Port. Looks like Schweiz. Rains like Scotland. A bientôt..Read more

      Puttin’ on the Biarritz!

      October 5, 2022 in France ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We departed Espelette very satisfied and in good spirits (nothing to do with the 2 glasses of rosé consumed at lunch!). The drive to Biarritz took about 45 minutes; it is a city on the Bay of Biscay, on the Atlantic coast in the French Basque Country. It is about 35 kilometres from the Spanish border. Biarritz is a luxurious seaside tourist destination known for the Hôtel du Palais (originally built for the Empress Eugénie circa 1855), its casinos overlooking the sea and its surfing culture. I was amazed by all the Aussie surfing brands on display.

Unfortunately we arrived on a very cloudy day, which meant Biarritz and the Bay of Biscay were looking a bit drab. Apparently, for the two previous days, there was a big fog and so you could barely see the sea!

After checking into our hotel, the GeorgeVI we headed out for a bit of a walk, exploring the city. We stopped for an espresso on the esplanade and then we walked along the coast all the way back to our hotel.

There was plenty of action on the beach, heaps of surfers and life saver training underway, and there were plenty of people like us just out walking in the fresh sea air. I can imagine on a beautiful sunny day that Biarritz would sparkle, but like most seaside towns with big hotels, casinos etc it feels a bit touristy, not unlike the Gold Coast back home.

We returned to our hotel for a bit of downtime before drinks in the bar, followed by our farewell dinner. It was a bit sad that we were missing both Mary and Bronwyn, but this is the world we now live in.

      In Espelette

      May 18, 2017 in France ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Today started with a little drizzle as we walked over to the patisserie for coffee and a pastry. Kathy spied a big bag of day old pastries for 2 euros and bought them for the road. That was probably the best bargain of the whole Camino de Baztán. Even at one day old, French pastries are superb!

The walk out of Bayonne was along the river, many pleasant car-free kms on a path. But the rain was constant. Soaked, we walked into Ustaritz 14 km later. There was a bar where we took refuge and had a coffee. Still the rain came down. Then we decided to have a bowl of soup and still the rain came down. Another coffee or tea and we decided there was no point in waiting any longer. So the last 10 km were just like the first 14 --rain every step. It is beautiful countryside, with farmhouses, crops, and meadows with lots of goats and sheep grazing.

When we arrived in Espelette, the thought of an albergue was not too appealing. Nuala remembered the name of a hotel that has special pilgrim prices. When the owner told us she would dry our shoes in the boiler room, that sealed the deal. So here we are, showered and happy, having walked around this cutesy town and visited the church. Dinner in 20 minutes. Rain in the forecast again tomorrow.

      Fête du Piment

      October 29, 2017 in France ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Who would have thought that a small village in the foothills of the Pyrenees would be famous throughout France for its chilli pepper and hold a 2-day festival every year to celebrate the fact. The basque cuisine features chilli heavily in almost every dish from savoury to sweet and it is the chilli from Espelette which is the most famous. Luckily for us, this year's festival coincided with our time here and so we jumped on the bike and headed into the hills to find the village.

Thanks to Christopher Columbus, the chilli pepper arrived from Mexico and in 1650, after realising that the growing conditions around Espelette were ideal (how they realised, we don't know!), every local farm was producing it and it became an essential part of every basque kitchen in the area.

Today, this special chilli is the first and only spice in France accredited with an AOC-AOP (just like fine wines) acknowledging the strict controls governing its production. It is planted in the spring and then harvested between August and December, once it becomes bright red. It is then sold in different ways; as a string of 20 fresh chillies, as a puree in a jar to be used in the cooking process or dried traditionally on the front of buildings and then turned into a powder to sprinkle over a finished dish.

We were told that visitors from all over France come to the festival and from the long line of traffic backed up into the village, they were right. Travelling on the bike made getting in and parking a breeze.

Strolling around we realised that it wasn't only the chilli that was being celebrated, it seemed that every basque food speciality was too with stalls full of locally made basque cake, cured meats, cheeses, nougat, wine and the biggest barbecue we've ever seen! For lunch we tried a Taloak, which is similar to a Mexican tortilla, made by hand mixing corn and water before rolling out ( in our case the rolling pin used was an empty wine bottle) and then cooking on a flat, hot plate. Filled wine two types of sausages, onions and of course some chilli pepper, a simple hot-dog will never be the same!

There followed a procession of bands and dignitaries with the Mayor announcing that next July the Tour de France will stop at Espelette for the first time, to great rounds of applause. Looks like two-wheelers are being welcomed to Espelette. We definitely were.
