      Paris!

      We started at the airport in Costa Rica on May 2nd at 11:00am and touched down in Paris on May 3rd at 5:00pm. Taking out the 8 hr time change, we traveled 22 hrs to get here. It was definitely tiring, but also so exciting.

      We’re staying in our first official hostel - no private room this time. 8 bed dorm bunks with privacy screens - actually very nice set up. Some won’t allow me to stay, if it’s a “party hostel” — no one over 35 yrs old. But many do.

      So we arrived, took the metro to the hostel, dropped everything and headed to where else but the Eiffel Tower for the first night! So amazing! Can’t wait to see all the history and sites. It doesn’t get dark here until 9:00 so lots of time to explore every day.      Read more

      Freiheitsstatue

      Wir konnten heute auf dem Wasser gehen! - naja fast. In mitten der Seine ist ein künstlicher Damm. Am Ende dessen steht eine 11,50 Meter hohe Kopie der Freiheitsstatue, die der Stadt von in Paris lebenden amerikanischen Bürgern im Jahr 1889 geschenkt wurde.
      Sie ist so aufgebaut, dass sie in die Richtung sieht, in der ihre größere Schwester im New Yorker Hafen steht.      Read more

      Day 20

      Eiffel Tower

      It was an early start today. We headed to Kings Cross Station and caught the Eurostar to Paris in preparation for our trip to Disneyland.

      The first thing we decided to do was visit the Eiffel Tower. We wanted to go up the tower, but of course the tickets for the lift up the tower sold out months ago, so it looks like we have a few steps to climb instead. 674 of them to be exact.

      Dani is not a big fan of heights, so she stayed at ground level with plans to seek out a gluten free bakery she had spotted on Google (more on that later). The rest of us, including the Pearce's, headed for the stairs.

      Everyone did a great job on the climb up the stairs even the little ones. However the number of people at the top made things a little unpleasant, especially given that it was quite a warm and humid day. We spent a bit of time enjoying the view and then made our way back down to meet Dani.

      Verdict: it was a fun and worthwhile experience, but the views OF the Eiffel Tower from the ground are probably than the views FROM the Eiffel Tower.      Read more

      First day in Paris

      We didn’t get to do a whole lot today as it was over 100 degrees most of the day and Lexi and I were both exhausted from flying (I flew from Barcelona and she flew in from Chicago), but it still feels surreal to be in Paris. I did have a bit of a travel nightmare on the way to the hotel. I took a cab from the airport and when we arrived, it declined my card. I tried to pay through their app with dad’s card (he sent me the number after my wallet was stolen) but since the accounts are connected both were suspended for suspicious activity (I guess from being in a new country). The driver spoke 0 English so it was impossible to communicate. We ended up going into the hotel to ask the receptionist to help mediate and he ended up saving me by just covering the fare with his personal card and saying I could just pay him back later. I have no idea what I would have done without that! Very lucky. Capital one is the villain of the story, as they sent me an email saying my card would continue to be declined due to fraud until I called their 1-800 number, which was not possible to do from overseas - pretty ridiculous for a card purely based around having no international fees. This is now the 3rd or 4th time I’ve been caught in a bad situation thanks to them randomly flagging my card and not giving me any way to remedy it until dad is awake and able to call them for me. Will not be using their cards in the future!Read more

      Entspanntes Paris

      Heute nachmittag sitze ich wieder einmal ganz entspannt in einem Café und gehe das vergangene Jahr nochmal durch.

      2022 ist doch einiges passiert.
      Ich habe 2 Personen aus der Ukraine bei mir für 3 Monate aufgenommen und ihnen versucht, ihren Start in Deutschland 🇩🇪 so leicht wie möglich zu machen. Das beste daran ist, dass ich dadurch neue Freunde kennen gelernt habe. Danke Ludmila und Uwe für euren Zuspruch.

      Auch der Kontakt zu "den Müllers", wie ich sie liebevoll nenne, hat sich in diesem Jahr intensiviert. Wir haben oft lecker zusammen gegessen. Und die beiden haben mich gerade in Bezug auf die Ukraine sehr unterstützt.

      Zu Ostern durfte ich in Aurich mit Freunden grillen und am lagerfeuer sitzen und im Sommer mit der Familie in Kiel verbringen.

      Und die zweite Jahreshälfte stand sehr im Zeichen des JRK. 2 Gruppenleiter Lehrgänge, das Cross Media Festival 🎶, der Bundeswettbewerb in Berlin, die Bundeskonferenz und die Landeskonferenz in Einbeck und überall waren tolle Menschen am Start ♥️

      Auch das podfest in berlin und das Podcast Treffen in Frankfurt waren Highlights in diesem Jahr. Sowieso der ganze Podcast mit tollen Persönlichkeiten die mit uns vors mikrofon gekommen sind war eine tolle Erfahrung.

      Ein großes Dankeschön geht raus an Flo. Du hast unseren Podcast auf ein neues Level gehoben. Dafür bin ich dir sehr dankbar und freue mich auf weitere Sessions mit dir im Tonstudio oder live 🎶

      Danke auch an meinen Kollegen und Kinogänger Sven, mit dem ich in diesem Jahr sooooo oft im Kino war, wie nie zuvor. Ich glaube 17 mal saßen wir in den Kinosesseln...

      Ich habe tolle Menschen kennengelernt, die meinem Leben einen Mehrwert geben. Was meine ich mit Mehrwert? Tolle Gespräche auf Augenhöhe, neue Denkanstöße und eine eigene Meinung. Also alles etwas, was einen weiter bringt. Das Leben ist zu kurz für smalltalk. Ich gehe dafür lieber in die Tiefe. Danke dafür stellvertretend an Sanni, Xenia, Vanessa und Viktoria.

      Und dann sind da die Freunde, die häufig zu kurz kommen, darüber aber nicht einmal meckern, sondern sich freuen, wenn man sich trifft und Zeit miteinander verbringen kann. Schön euch zu haben ❤️😚

      Was kann das Jahr 2023 jetzt noch mehr bringen? Braucht es mehr? Ist nicht das wichtig, was ich aufgeschrieben habe? Ändern kann ich es eh nicht, ich kann nur die Weichen stellen und schauen, wohin mich das neue Jahr führt und wen es in mein Leben wirft...

      The Eiffel tower at night

      In order to get our tickets for the Eiffel tower that let us use the elevator and would take us to the second floor and the summit, I had to book in February, and when I finally got through, there was only one time slot on April 15th left - at 10:30 pm. So we headed through security and entered the grounds where we found the lineup for the elevator easily. Thank goodness it's not the busy season yet because we would have been in a much longer line and would have waited much longer.
      The elevator to the second floor is a double decker model that can take about 50 people at a time up through the leg of the tower, past the first floor that bears the names of all the people who were part of creating the Eiffel tower except for the one woman mathematician who was not seen as important enough to include, to the second platform.
      We walked over to the elevator to the summit and spent about half an hour in the lineup for this lift. Night was settling in and the wind was increasing so we donned our touques, gloves and jackets in preparation for the weather at the top of Paris.
      The lights of the city spread out below us as we walked around the third level of the tower. We could see the Arc de Triumph, Les Invalides and even Sacre Coeur lit up below us. The Seine River glistened like a sinuous snake and we could just make out the lights of the boats traveling her length. Since there was WiFi on the tower, I WhatsApp called my Mom to share a bit of the view with her. But it was a short call because all too soon we had to return to our elevator and descend to the ground beneath the Eiffel tower's skirts again.
      What an experience! Who would have thought that the little farm girl from Manitoba would one day stand outside Gustave Eiffel's office on the third level of the tower?      Read more

      Aus Brüssel verabschieden wir uns mit vielen gestiegenen Treppen, denn auch der nächste Fahrstuhl ist out of service 😖
      Also schultern wir unsere Sachen und machen uns auf in die Stadt der Liebe ❤️
      Auch hier kommen wir relativ gut durch den Verkehr und finden gut das Parkhaus.
      Davor gönnen wir uns Baguette, Croissant, Eclaire und Cappuccino.
      Der Check in geht reibungslos und die Zimmer sind klein aber funktional und sauber 👌
      Einmal die Füße hochlegen und dann sagen wir dem Eiffelturm Salut, 🗼🤗
      Natürlich gibt es noch einen Crêpes und eine Orangina.
      Moritz checkt noch "to good to go" und holt mit Felix unsere Snacks für morgen.

      Noch mal Füße hochlegen und dann suchen wir uns ein Restaurant zum dinneren.
      Wir haben ein tolles authentisches kleines Restaurant gefunden. Nett und sehr lecker!
      Nach einem Panna cotta und Espresso geht es wieder nach Hause und verfolgen Fußi.... Gerade zum 1:0 für Deutschland und auch rechtzeitig zum 1:1 Ausgleich 😏
      Mal schauen was die zweite Halbzeit bringt.

      Paris

      Ich gehe zeitig zum Frühstück und bin sehr angetan und freue mich auf Kaffee ☕
      Gestern hatten wir noch mit den deutschen Frauen mitgefiebert...... und wir können bei den Franzosen das Finale gegen England schauen ⚽💪🏻
      Die Kinder trudeln so nach und nach zum Frühstück ein.
      Danach haben wir noch genug Zeit uns fertig zu machen, denn unsere Tickets sind ab 12 Uhr reserviert.
      Gehen werden wir heute ja noch genug.... Lotta hat für uns eine Sightseeing - Tour gemacht 😘
      Wir gehen rechtzeitig los, den Weg zum Eiffelturm kennen wir ja nun schon.
      Beim Eiffelturm geht alles recht zügig und wir können nun unsere Waden trainieren und hoch marschieren.
      (ca. 704 Stufen)
      Die Anstrengung lohnt sich.... die Sicht ist gut und so können wir uns Paris von oben anschauen.
      Ein kleines Souvenir müssen wir natürlich mitnehmen 🗼😘
      Nach dem Eiffelturm geht es zum "Arc de Triomphe" .... viel Verkehr..... wie immer 😂
      Die Pyramide vom Lovre schauen wir uns nur kurz von Außen an. Es ist ganz schön warm und das Wasser knapp.
      Beim Louvre können wir die Wasserflaschen wieder auffüllen.
      Auf der "ile de la cite" wollten wir eigentlich ein Eis essen..... Lotta findet den tollen Eisladen, nur als wir sehen wie viel eine Kugel kostet..... schlucken wir erstmal..... 5€ und dazu noch ein sehr unfreundlicher Verkäufer. 😖
      Der bekommt von mir kein Geld!!!
      Die Jungs sind geschafft und machen sich auf zum Hotel.
      Lotta und ich genießen noch ein Eis im "Jardin de Luxemburg."
      Auf dem Rückweg kaufen wir noch ein paar Sachen für unser Abendessen an der Seine ein. Moritz organisiert noch was von "to good to go"
      Zu erwähnen wäre noch, daß Felix zur Fahrt zum Triumphbogen alleine in der Metrostation war, denn er ist nicht mehr mit reingekommen.
      Bei der nächsten Station waren wir alle wieder beisammen. Kleine Schreck - Sekunde🙃
      Wir verweilen so lange an der Seine, bis der Eiffelturm blinkt.
      Dach fallen alle erschöpft ins Bett.
      Laut Lotta's Tracker sind wir heute 23000 Schritte gegangen.

      Je suis assis au café

      Bei 14°Grad kann man abends auch noch mal draußen sitzen und einen Mexican Mule trinken 😊

      Vorher waren wir zusammen essen und es gab sehr lecker zubereitete Fleisch 🥩 und ein genial angemachter Rosenkohl. Der war tatsächlich sehr lecker, denn eigentlich mag ich Rosenkohl nicht 😜
