      The Louvre … just wow

      Each day on this trip brings a new wonder to behold, it seems like. Today we saw SO much again … Paris has a remarkable affordable public transit system, and the city is surprisingly walkable - in sections.

      We started our morning at The Louvre. It is the largest museum in the world, and it was obvious. I found the building itself to be a work of art! We only scratched the surface there. Did see some amazing statues - Nike of Samothrace (winged) which Jordan sketched - 190 BC, and the Venice de Milo! 100 BC. Other noteworthy piece we saw was the Mona Lisa - the crowds were intense, but we managed to get to the front eventually to see her.

      The French have created magnificent gardens everywhere - reminds me of what I’ve seen in Canada. They are just gorgeous. There were also two arches - one smaller and one massive. Really massive. The biggest surprise was seeing the Place de La Concorde - this is a square (where kings/queens were beheaded during the revolution) with what looks like a small version of the Washington monument from far away, but as you get closer it is clear it’s different. It’s an Egyptian obelisk!! No kidding. It’s 3300 years old! The Egyptians gifted the 230 ton Luxor obelisk (it has a twin still in Egypt) to France in the mid 1800’s. It took SEVEN years to transport it across the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, up the Nile and finally up the Seine river. And then it took a feat of engineering to raise it.

      We took a metro ride out of the historical district to what looked to be the suburbs of Paris - Wandered the canal and then what else to do when in Paris with the biggest Marvel fan ever (Jordan), we went to opening night of the Dr. Strange movie.       Art Day

      We had early morning tickets to see some art so after a lovely breakfast and good strong coffee we hit the bikes again and risked our lives in the Paris streets. We were 30 minutes late for our time slot but Aiden said it was very Parisian of us to be late. It didn’t matter anyway because no one even checked our tickets! (Note to self, just walk in like you belong there and save the dough!) Here’s where Daniel shined. He has read every Rick Riorden book on the planet and really knows his Greek and Roman gods. The Mona Lisa was in the new room which is nice considering the last time we were there she was in a dark hallway. I prefer the big art anyway over her. The Wedding at Cana is more my style.

      Then Saint Chappelle- I heard Daniel walk in and say “whoa!” That says it all.      Read more

      Louvre

      Nach einen kurzen Stop am Moulin Rouge ging es weiter zum Louvre. Dort war viel los. Wir ließen es uns nicht nehmen ein kurzes Päuschen einzulegen und dem Treiben zuzuschauen. Nach ein paar Fotos zogen wir weiter. Langsam machte sich ein Hüngerchen breit. Auf der Suche nach einen passenden Restaurant sahen wir dann das erste Mal den Eiffelturm. Echt ein beeindruckendes Bauwerk. Wir fanden schließlich ein kleines Asiatisches Restaurant indem es echt lecker schmeckte. Auf dem weiteren Weg in Richtung Eiffelturm ging es vorbei an vielen Geschäften, wo wir uns eine Packung Erdbeeren kauften. Dann machten wir uns auf der großen Wiese vor dem Eiffelturm gemütlich, zogen unsere Schuhe aus und ließen uns die Erdbeeren schmecken.Read more

      Paris bei Nacht

      Nach einem kurzen Regenschauer ging es in eine nicht weit entfernte Pariser Bar. Das Nachtleben und die Kultur ist einfach unglaublich. Überall Straßencafes mit Menschen, welche entspannt an den kleinen Tischen sitzen. Paris, wie man es sich vorstellt.

      Nach dem Essen und ein paar Drinks 🍹 ließen wir es uns nicht nehmen noch einmal in die U-Bahn zu steigen und dem Louvre im Dunkeln ein Besuch abzustatten.      Read more

      Day 13

      Big pyramid and arch day!

      January 26 in France ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

      Pyramid timeeee! We started our day by catching a few trains to the Louvre where we stumbled across the BEST bakery in Paris I’m convinced. I would buy endless baguettes from this place. After eating way more than we should have, we went to the louvre museum and optimistically we thought we’d see most of the place, but oh boy we were so wrong. We were there for about 5 hours and covered 1 of the 5 floors oops. My two favourites were the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa. We figured out way too late that you need many many days to cover everything. Non stop art and sculptures everywhere = getting quite lost. Anyway after we somehow found our way out we went to the same bakery again before catching a train to the Arc de Triomphe. It was a super nice evening to go there and it felt the most like what I expected France to be in the first place. After walking around a bit we caught the train back to our air bnb and then walked to the Mexican restaurant where we had dinner a few nights before. Equally as good as the time before.       Unsere Tickets für den Louvre haben wir bereits im Voraus gekauft und 17 € bezahlt.
      Einlasszeit 10:30 Uhr. Wir fahren mit der selbstfahrenden U-Bahn Nummer 14 direkt zur Station Pyramide. Wir sind 30 Minuten zu früh dort und müssen daher noch warten dann geht es zügig voran und wir marschieren als erster zur Mona LisaRead more

      Paris Day Two

      Ridiculous sleep - woke up every 2 hours. I hope that’s the end of the jet lag for this trip.

      Started the day with a 4km jog through the Batignolles park to remind my legs how to run. Good to get a cold run in after the summer of training in Adelaide.

      Picked up 2 baguettes from a bakery on the way home from the Batignolles and I’m proud to say I managed to complete the entire transaction in French …….while holding up two fingers and pointing at the baguettes I wanted. But I’m sure it was my French that got the job done!

      Caught a bus to the Gallery Lafayette which was actually recommended by an old work contact on an Instagram post.

      The Gallery is a 6 story shopping centre with a rooftop view of Paris. There is one building for menswear and another entire building dedicated to women’s clothes, perfume, souvenirs etc. This was high end shopping at its best - thankfully we only window shopped and I spent just as much time keeping an eye on the score in the Showdown. Go Crows.

      Stopped for lunch in a food court next door which was really a collection of quality mini restaurants and bakeries. Like Singapore, food court food in Paris rivals restaurant food in Australia.

      Then made our way to a Westfield shopping centre - so Ben could play a Piano he found online. We got there and 3-4 other random teenage French boys also had the same idea and Ben immediately struck up a friendship as they each took it in turns playing. He was buzzed afterwards.

      Finished the afternoon wandering the streets along with thousands of other tourists. Paris on Saturday is busy. Damn busy.

      Stopped for some photos at the Pyramid on top of the Louvre. Tickets are sold out for the Louvre museum for weeks - so we’ve missed out on that unfortunately.

      Finished the day prepping for the marathon tomorrow and finally resting our legs. I’ve done nearly 18000 steps today which wasn’t the plan.

      But we are in Paris - can’t waste the limited time we are here.      Read more

      Day 4

      Second day in Paris.

      April 24 in France ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

      We are awake early this morning. Bloody jet lag makes it hard to sleep sometimes. We got a couple of bikes and rode along the river just as it was getting light. It so peaceful to be out and about before everybody is awake. The bridges, the gardens and the Louvre were virtually empty apart from a few groundsmen cleaning up. Gosh it is cold today though, the fickle sun has disappeared and the temperatures are dropping. We found a nice warm coffee shop to huddle in for a while with a cafe crème and a croissant.

      The mission this morning is to visit the Dorsay Museum. the Dorsay is renowned for its rich collection of Impressionism art as well as sculptures and the amazing architecture of the historic railway station it is housed in. The most famous being Monet and Van Gogh. So many people lined up to get in, luckily it’s a massive museum and they all disappeared very quickly once we got inside. We spent a lovely few hours in there looking at the different painting we’d only seen on tv.

      Just as we were about to leave we came across one of the restaurants, wow what a fabulous room, so of course we had to have lunch in there. Along with quite a few other fellow museum goers. It really was a lovely lunch though in a great atmosphere.

      On the bikes again this afternoon and up to visit Sacre Coeur. I’m glad we opted for the electric ones on this trip. It was all uphill and then really uphill at the end. Pretty sure we went through the ghetto of Paris to get there too. I wasn’t game to stop, despite the horrendous traffic and the evil kin-evil other bike riders.

      Holy it was packed up there, so many people about. Gorgeous view of the city from the steps of Sacre Coeur though and lots of fabulous artists in Montmartre painting portraits. Must be cool to be able to paint like that.

      Now the problem of course is the return trip down the hill and now it’s even busier with everyone on their way home. I think I deserved a medal for staying on two wheels, almost stacked it a few times when someone stepped out in front of me or took the red light going the other way. Finally we got back to civilisation and couldn’t find anywhere to leave the bikes. They have to go back in a rack and there needs to be a spare slot. I was ready to dump the bloody things but luckily we finally found an empty slot.

      Louvre Tour Over; Heading Back to Hotel

      We finished our guided tour of the Louvre Museum, and are planning to head back to the hotel for a bit.

      We saw MANY famous works of art, including, of course, the Mona Lisa. It had a queue set up for the immense amount of people, and you couldn’t even get very close to the glass case holding the painting. However, I got some very nice pictures.

      The tour was very chaotic because of the MAJOR crowdedness of the Louvre. Our tour guide also packed in a lot of stuff to see. It was awesome, but I was exhausted and my back hurt majorly by the end of it.      Read more

      Louvre

      April 27, 2023 in France

      Mit einem kurzen Stopp im Hotelzimmer sind wir Richtung Seine gelaufen. Das Hotel ist echt zentral, auch wenn in Paris vieles auseinander liegt konnten wir schon viel zu Fuß erreichen. Knapp 40 min später sind wir an der Seine und am Louvre angekommen.
      Auf dem Weg dorthin sind wir immer an schönen Gebäuden stehen geblieben aber wussten nicht ganz was es war 😂 #kulturbanausen
      Es fing leicht zu regnen an, aber immer noch ok draußen ohne Schirm zu laufen. Wir sind zur Louvre Pyramide gelaufen und haben uns dort hingesetzt und einfach Leute beobachten. Wir sind knapp 14km gelaufen unsere Beine und Füße waren total schwer 😅 als der Regen stärker wurde sind wir mit der Metro Richtung Hotel zurück gefahren.
      Mit einer kleinen Pause sind wir dann zum Abendessen gegangen, ein kleines französisches Restaurant um die Ecke von uns, wir hatten nicht allzu viel Hunger und haben uns eine gemischte Vorspeisenplatte geteilt.
      Um 21.30 Uhr sind wir tot müde ins Bett gefallen.      Read more
