What a beautiful day to be in France. Light breakfast of bagels and lox, then off to our first excursion; Peggy did the hike through a vineyard, I did the walk through an underground wine cellar. Both of us ended up purchasing wines to drink on board and to bring home! Afternoon was sailing to Blaye so we enjoyed lunch on the sun deck, dip in the pool, and relaxing as we enjoyed a Rose and a Brut. Quick shower before the Ama family gathering for drinks and appetizers. . Dinner is always a spectacular experience. . Tonight we brought a Bordeaux style wine from NC to compare with France wine... both were very good!

Blaye, Gironde

We continued south today into the Gironde to Blaye which is located on the right bank of the Gironde estuary.
Blaye has a citadel built on a promontory beside the river which contains the ruins of a medieval castle and the ruins of a Basilica.
Our park up is a short walk to the citadel and the town so we've spent the day exploring. There's lots to see here and we particularly enjoy visiting historic sites.Read more

At noon we cast off from Bourg and headed to Blaye. Blaye is located on the east side of the Gironde Estuary and is known for its citadel complex high above the town. It was designed by Vauban, a military engineer during the reign of Louis XIV. Built between 1685 and 1689 its goal was to protect the town from invaders coming up the estuary. Along with forts on the other side of the estuary it was able to control river traffic. It is quite a complex with its own streets, barracks and even a prison. There are still ruins from a 12th century castle within the ramparts. Legend says the hero Count Roland of Blaye from the Chanson of Roland was buried here in the basilica on the site of the current citadel.Read more

Die Zitadelle bei Nacht

Nachdem wir unser WoMo abends abgestellt und etwas gegessen hatten, sind wir noch kurz in der Stadt spazieren gegangen. Auf dem Rückweg sind wir auch an der Zitadelle vorbeigekommen - und wer hätte das gedacht: sie war sogar nachts für Besucher geöffnet! Die Gelegenheit haben wir uns nicht entgehen lassen, denn so konnten wir die Zitadelle in aller Stille ohne Touristenströme erkundigen, und durch die Beleuchtung war es besonders schön. (LK)Read more

Entré en Gironde ce matin, je me suis hâté pour prendre le dernier bac traversant l'estuaire. Malheureusement, mes prévisions étaient en dessous de la distance réelle.

Depuis hier, je me demande : pourquoi le chemin balisé ne va-t-il pas tout droit, comme les infrastructures routières ?
Est-ce une métaphore de la vie avec ses sentiers sinueux ? Loin du confort de la voie bitumée, toute tracée et faisant fi des parcelles agricoles ?
Ceci étant, j'ai marché plus de 30km hier alors que j'étais censé en faire moins. Aujourd'hui, j'en ai fait presque 40 alors que j'étais censé en faire 30...

Ayant marché comme un dératé (moyenne de 7km/h) à travers les vallons du blayais pour attraper le bac, je me suis finalement résout à l'entrée de Blaye que j'allais le manquer à 20min pres. Ce fut un soulagement même si je ne savais pas vraiment où planter ma tente, dans une agglomération qui plus est.

L'office de tourisme étant fermé (comme hier), j'ai sollicité le curé de Blaye, au presbytère, afin de faire tamponner ma crédenciale. Il m'a alors ouvert sa porte et proposé le gîte.
Ayant posé mon sac dans la bâtisse, j'en ai profité pour visiter la citadelle de Blaye, le corps allégé.
