Fahrradtour nach Vannes am Golf von Séné

      September 11, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Read more

      Besuch in Vannes

      July 24, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Read more

      Vannes

      September 19, 2022 in France ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Had a couple of days resting. We have now come into Brittany for some warmer weather. Staying on the edge of the Gulf of Mobihan in Southern Brittany. Quiet sloping site. Easy cycle into Vannes through the pine forest and up the river on dedicated cycle paths. What a lovely place. The part wall old town has a lovely feel and was so easy to walk around. There are also lovely gardens near the ramparts.
We had a lovely 30th anniversary meal then a bit of shopping. Excellent day all round. So many photos taken today as around every corner was a beautiful view x

      Bretagne, Vannes
      Vannes ( bretonisch Gwened)

      Onto Vannes

      October 5, 2017 in France ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Yesterday we somewhat sadly packed our bags and bade farewell to St Malo. We had a fabulous time there and watching the tides became an hypnotic part of each day's schedule. Unfortunately we were leaving before the tides reached their spectacular monthly maximum, so maybe we will have to take that into account in planning our dates for our possible next visit in 2019.

Accompanied by the now familiar sound of rolling suitcase castors we walked the 1.4 km to the Gare St Malo and waited for our train to Rennes. Our tickets did not have allocated seats so we had a bit of a scramble to secure places for ourselves and our luggage. An hour later we had arrived at the impressive Rennes Station and looked for the next train that would take us the rest of the way to Vannes.

This time we did have allocated seats, although for some reason the air conditioning in the carriage did not seem to be working. This meant that we had a somewhat uncomfortable time, but the high speed (over 200 kph) of the train and the superb scenery meant that the time went quite quickly.

We arrived at Vannes at around 3.30 pm, the warmest time of the day. The sun had shone brightly all day and chose that moment to shine even more. Our hotel was situated about 1.5 km from the Vannes Station and we had a rather hot and bumpy walk to its front door. Fortunately we made it without losing a castor and the welcoming lady at the desk told us that our room was waiting for us. This is always a relief, especially when the booking had been made almost a year earlier.

We had last visited Vannes back in 2013 and at that time we had been travelling with Paul and Jan Coutts. The following day was spent renewing our knowledge of the historic city and exploring many kilometres of its tiny roads and alleys. In the evening we had a pizza dinner at the same restaurant we had visited 4 years earlier. It is situated right at the top of the ramparts and gives an amazing view down to the manicured gardens below. The evening was warm and perfectly still and we even had the same friendly waiter who had served us four years ago. It was another magic end to a perfect day (and the pizzas were excellent too).

It is also worth noting that I have noticed several Camino signs during our travels this year. These have special relevance to me now that I will be walking the Camino next year. I guess these signs have been here for a long time, but I have never looked out for them before.

      Vannes

      May 8, 2019 in France ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

I Like 👍🏼

      Vannes

      September 21, 2013 in France ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Although our cycling adventure had drawn to a close, Maggie and I still had lots of travel and exploring waiting for us. Today we caught the train to Vannes and went in search of the Europcar depot. We discovered that it was actually about 10 km from the centre of town - a bit far to walk as the helpful guy at the desk had suggested.

Another short train and we finally found ourselves at the correct location. The creative staff at Europcar had kindly "upgraded" us from the car we had booked to a totally unfamiliar hybrid Toyota. Not only would we have the fun of driving on the wrong side of the road, we would also have the challenge of learning a whole new set of controls. We were not reassured when even the guy at the Europcar depot did not know how to start it.

After a few false starts we were finally underway and trying to find our way back to Vannes. Somehow a wrong turn found me right in the centre square of a tiny medieval village. It was NOT where we were meant to be. With sweat pouring down my face, I slowly extricated the car, much to the amusement of the locals.

Sometime later we reached the relative safety of our hotel and I almost collapsed with exhaustion. Was this how the rest of the trip was going to go ? And whose idea was it to hire a car in the first place ?

We decided to explore the city on foot and leave the car alone. Paul and Jan were also staying in the same hotel and we learnt that they had experienced their own traumas when collecting their hire car. In fact, their situation was a little more serious as Paul had parked the car somewhere in Vannes and could not remember where he had left it. All he could remember was driving through a long tunnel at some time.

We set off in search of Paul's lost car and eventually found it in a carpark. It was relief all round. We ended the day with a pizza dinner at the lovely cafe on the ramparts, overlooking the gardens.

It had been a long and stressful day, but we knew that more challenges would lay ahead.

      Vannes

      April 7, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

      September 24, 2021 in France ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Read more
